Influence Of Dietary Modification With And Without Exercise On Physical Performance In Male Rats, Johnhenry Michael Schriefer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study examined if specific dietary plan, with and without exercise, can positively impact physical performance in male rats. The present research examined three aspects of physical performance in relation to the Daniel Fast diet (DF) compared to a Western diet (WD). Long-Evans rats (n=56, aged 3-4 weeks) were on a 12 week diet and exercise intervention. Results demonstrated that treadmill run time to exhaustion increased in both exercise groups, with a greater increase in the DF+E group. Wire hang and slant board performance decreased from pre to post in all groups at a similar rate. Body weight gain was …

Japanese American Internment: A Tragedy Of War, Amber Martinez
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
Japanese American internment in the United States during World War II affected thousands of lives for generations yet it remains hidden in historical memory. The study of Japanese American internment provides a historical catalyst for research and introspection about democracy, citizenship, and constitutional rights in the hope that by understanding the past a dialogue can be established to prevent a recurrence.

Senses In Synthesis: Imaginative Sensing In The 19th Century, Jesse Hernandez
Senses In Synthesis: Imaginative Sensing In The 19th Century, Jesse Hernandez
Theses and Dissertations
During the late 19th century, arts and literature had a surge of sensory awareness, made manifest through sensory analogy, intersensory metaphor, and synaesthesia. This dissertation explores this phenomenon through a study of five poets and artists: Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Barlas, and Julia Margaret Cameron. Using imaginative sensing, these artists transformed the relationship between artist and observer, assigning greater responsibility to their audience while simultaneously asserting artistic control of their work. Their fascination with sensory mixing and multisensory awareness demonstrates unique ideas about perception and embodiment, ideas that have sparked both controversy and imitation. I begin …

The Ojibwe Living Culture The Importance Of Traditional Culture On The White Earth Reservation, Minnesota, Keara Moyle, Dr. John Hawkins
The Ojibwe Living Culture The Importance Of Traditional Culture On The White Earth Reservation, Minnesota, Keara Moyle, Dr. John Hawkins
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Within the last two decades, the White Earth reservation of Ojibwe has seen a dramatic resurgence of interest in and performance of what they would call traditional culture. This traditional culture has played a critical role in tribal membership and concepts of identity. The White Earth reservation underwent constitutional reform from 2007 to November 2013, which included new legislation determining membership. After years of an imposed policy of blood quantum, White Earth residents are basing their membership on a system, considered by some, to closely follow the traditional ways of determining tribal membership.

Difficult Spaces: The Gothic-Blues Voice In Comparative African American Literary Movements, Cheng-Hsuan Wu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In the African American literary heritage, a counter-discourse as opposed to the dominant culture's racial ideology is often needed to not only adopt the "master's text" but also redress it to accommodate the black American's experience and expression. The intention of this dissertation is to theorize the expressive modes of the gothic and the blues as one potent counter-discourse informing the voice of black resistance in African American literature against the exploitation of the master narrative from the mainstream. My project focuses on the potential inter-textuality of the blues/gothic voice in the literary conventions of the migration narrative, black drama, …

Understanding The Conversion To Christianity And Messianism In A Hmong Community In Nan, Thailand, Lindsey Fields, Dr. Jacob Hickman
Understanding The Conversion To Christianity And Messianism In A Hmong Community In Nan, Thailand, Lindsey Fields, Dr. Jacob Hickman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Hmong of Thailand find themselves at the beginning of the 21st century embedded in a unique religious context. Though traditionally, Hmong people have practiced a mixture of spirit rituals and ancestral worship known as Dab Qhuas shamanism, in an increasingly globalized world these traditional practices have in some cases given way as Hmong in some locales are beginning to convert to other religions. Although Thailand does not have a significant Christian population, Western Christianity has begun to take seed among this people. Additionally, a surge of home-grown religious revitalization movements is emerging. Messianic groups professing a more correct set of …

Lead Seals From Colonial Fort St. Joseph (20be23), Cathrine Davis
Honors Theses
The mainstay of the North American fur trade was cloth, which composed at one time over half of the goods shipped out of Montreal for trade with Native Americans. However, this cloth rarely survives in archaeological context, leaving only other artifacts that yield limited information on the textiles that once existed at a site. Among these artifacts are lead seals, which functioned much in the same way as modern day clothing tags, with lettering and symbols that reveal information such as the origin, quality, and quantity of the cloth to which they were once attached.
This study examined seals from …

Public involvement and engagement is a key aspect of George Washington’s Boyhood Home at Ferry Farm near Fredericksburg, Virginia. Ferry Farm is a public archaeology site that allows volunteers and the public to participate in the actual field research. Three dimensional printed artifacts provided through a partnership with the Virtual Curation Lab at VCU help non-archaeologists understand the kind of artifacts found previously at the site. The ability for physical models to be used in the field allows the public to connect with the past inhabitants of the landscape. Creating this connection and involving the public in the history of …

Chemical And Mineralogical Analysis Of Varney Red-Filmed Ceramics From The Lower Mississippi River Valley, Lindsay Plunk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this research is to examine Early Mississippian Red-Filmed ceramics from three sites in the Lower Mississippi River Valley (Chickasawba Mound, Shelby Forest, and Walnut Mound) using techniques of archaeometry, namely x-ray diffraction (XRD) and thin-section petrography. The XRD technique revealed the percent mineral composition of the sherds in bulk analysis and presence or absence of minerals in the slip analysis. Petrographic results include the types of inclusions in each sample, as well as mineral shape and size, and temper sorting and abundance. The red nature of the slip appears to be due to very rounded iron-oxide nodules …

Inheritance Of Social Dominance In Rhesus Macaques, Mason Bennett, Dr. James Dee Higley
Inheritance Of Social Dominance In Rhesus Macaques, Mason Bennett, Dr. James Dee Higley
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Many species of primates have complex social systems and hierarchies. These social structures help in forming an identity and establishing a place in the world. Depending on one’s ranking in the social hierarchy there may be physiological, psychological, and emotional consequences. A primate with low rank may suffer greater stress, have less access to resources or social support, and have a higher chance of mortality (Sapolsky, 2004).
