Look at Me: Japanese Women Writers at the Millennial Turn

This dissertation explores body aesthetics and anxieties through analyses of contemporary fiction by women. Framed in terms of "the male gaze," it analyzes the ways in which women writing today negotiate and reappropriate the subject/object binary upon which the gaze itself rests. The four authors on whom I focus-- Hasegawa Junko, Kanehara Hitomi, Matsumoto Yûko, and Sakurai Ami--deliberately disturb readers with stories of incest, sadomasochism, and eating disorders. Representative texts from their respective oeuvres are categorized and analyzed in terms of the "obscene," the "abject," and the "traumatic" in order …

Cultures Of Exile: Conversations On Language And The Arts, Eleni Bastéa, Walter Putnam, Mark Forte Apr 2014

Cultures Of Exile: Conversations On Language And The Arts, Eleni Bastéa, Walter Putnam, Mark Forte

Faculty Publications

The conference “Cultures of Exile: Conversations on Language and the Arts,” co-organized by Professors Eleni Bastea and Walter Putnam, was inspired by the music of Georges Moustaki (1934--2013), especially his song “Le Métèque” (1969). In “Le Métèque” Moustaki dealt with outsiders, strangers, and all those who do not share one homogeneous place of origin. What does it mean to be a “métèque,” an exile, an outsider today? Although often associated with loss and victimhood, exile can also foster artistic freedom, creativity, renewal, and empowerment. What is the role of the new place in the development of one’s artistic oeuvre? How …

Making Healthy Minds And Bodies In Syria And Lebanon, 1899 - 1961, Beverly A. Tsacoyianis Apr 2014

Making Healthy Minds And Bodies In Syria And Lebanon, 1899 - 1961, Beverly A. Tsacoyianis

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Psychiatrists in Syria presented mental health treatment to Syrians as more than just a way to control or cure mental illness, but as a modernizing worldview to combat popular ideas about the origins of mental illness. When the Ibn Sina Mental Hospital was founded near Damascus in 1922, staff were careful to strip treatment of religious meaning. While the physicians were trained in French psychiatric methods, they neither attempted "moral healing" nor imposed religious instruction, as at other hospitals in the region such as the Protestant medical missionary-run Asfuriyeh near Beirut. Ibn Sina hospital staff were so careful to present …

Terrestrial Paradises: Imagery From The Voyages Of Captain Cook, Kara Schneiderman Apr 2014

Terrestrial Paradises: Imagery From The Voyages Of Captain Cook, Kara Schneiderman

Open Access Theses

A series of engravings from George William Anderson’s A New, Authentic, and Complete Collection of Voyages Round the World, Undertaken and Performed by Royal Authority Containing an Authentic, Entertaining, Full, and Complete History of Captain Cook’s First, Second, Third and Last Voyages (London: Alexander Hogg, 1784-1786) and a French panoramic wallpaper, Les Sauvages de la Mer Pacifique (Savages of the Pacific Sea), designed and manufactured by Joseph Dufour in 1806, are examined within the context of eighteenth-century European travel imagery documenting encounters with non-Western peoples in the Pacific Islands and the Americas. The impact of Neoclassicism as an artistic movement, …

Time Distribution Of Faculty Workload At Boise State University, John P. Ziker, Allyanna Wintermote, David Nolin, Kathryn Demps, Matthew Genuchi, Katie Meinhardt

College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs Presentations

This project’s first phase was to get a general idea of what the average work day looks like for a Boise State University faculty member; from this stage we developed activity definitions to use for the next phase. Thirty faculty members were interviewed by fourteen trained undergraduate research assistants over the course of two weeks on alternating days, April 9-21, 2013. These thirty faculty members represented all colleges of the Boise State University campus, including the Library, providing a total of 166 faculty days’ worth of data. The positions held by each participant ranged between an Assistant Professor and a …

On The Development Of Spinoza’S Account Of Human Religion, James Simkins Apr 2014

On The Development Of Spinoza’S Account Of Human Religion, James Simkins

Intermountain West Journal of Religious Studies

This paper provides a narrative account of the development of Spinoza's view of human religion in terms of historical influences in Spinoza's life. Spinoza embraced a position in which the majority of religious beliefs are reduced to anthropological phenomena on naturalistic grounds. However, certain rationally grounded religious beliefs are defended as objectively valid. This paper seeks to demonstrate that the philosophical substance of Spinoza's position was derived from the philosophical work of Maimonides and Hobbes. However, the impetus behind the radical conclusions which Spinoza drew came from the atmosphere of early modern Amsterdam. It is through a novel synthesis of …

Revisiting Joseph Campbell’S The Power Of Myth, Daniel Gorman Jr. Apr 2014

Revisiting Joseph Campbell’S The Power Of Myth, Daniel Gorman Jr.

Intermountain West Journal of Religious Studies

This paper considers the relevance of The Power of Myth to the secular study of religion. First, I identify the scholars from whom Campbell borrows concepts. I organize these scholars into three groups – the qualitative religious scholars, the quantitative religious scholars, and those who draw from both approaches. Next, I identify Joseph Campbell’s key ideas (the monomyth, the hero’s journey, the existence of a higher power or energy, the lack of myth in the modern world, and the notion that religion possesses given qualities). I then analyze the contradictions inherent within Campbell’s argument, for Campbell fails to synthesize three …

Out Cold: A Case Study Of Human Skeletal Remains Demonstrating The Importance Of Site Context, Melissa Kidd, Audrey Rogers, Nicole Inghilterra, Beki Jumonville, Samantha H. Blatt Apr 2014

Out Cold: A Case Study Of Human Skeletal Remains Demonstrating The Importance Of Site Context, Melissa Kidd, Audrey Rogers, Nicole Inghilterra, Beki Jumonville, Samantha H. Blatt

College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs Presentations

When excavating human remains, the context of the site can be just as important in understanding the cause of death as the skeletal materials themselves. This research examines the implications of bioarchaeology and forensic contexts in the following case study. A site excavated in the 1980s presented a skeletonized individual with a rifle leaning against a tree. Later identified, this individual was a missing person who disappeared in the winter in the 1920’s. Due to the presence of the rifle, the location of the individual under the tree, and the missing cranium, the manner of death was initially assumed a …

Agentive Hmong Memory Making: “We Stood Up To Them”, April Reber Apr 2014

Agentive Hmong Memory Making: “We Stood Up To Them”, April Reber

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Racialized environmentalism and politicized economics converged in July and August, 2000, when a coalition of Thai farmers, Royal Forestry Department (RFD) and other government officials blocked off roads leading to Hmong farms in the mountains in Thailand. This coalition collaboratively targeted Hmong lychee orchards that had almost reached maturation (it takes lychee trees 10 years to fully mature). According to my respondents, the Thais who cut down the trees came from three mountain villages that overlook the mountain valley where the fields are. Similarly, the RFD office is in the mountains near one village and overlooking the fields. According to …
