The Separation Of Humans And Nature As It Relates To Environmental Degradation, Vinay Srinivasan
The Separation Of Humans And Nature As It Relates To Environmental Degradation, Vinay Srinivasan
2014 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award
In his Reflective Essay the author described being surprised by the direction his research took and recognized that his holistic approach in this research project made it an enjoyable experience. He concludes, “This is how passions are sparked, questions start flowing, and perhaps the next revelation is reached.” The author’s research focused on the Western view of the divide between people and the environment and the human attitude of domination over nature “from the perspective of three integrated but distinct lenses—the religious, the economic, and the civilizational.”
An Evaluation Of The Use Of Composting Latrines And The Perceptions Of Excrement In Ngäbe Communities In Panama, Patricia Anna Marie Wilbur
An Evaluation Of The Use Of Composting Latrines And The Perceptions Of Excrement In Ngäbe Communities In Panama, Patricia Anna Marie Wilbur
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Engineers are exploring a new paradigm in wastewater treatment; focus is shifting to the recovery and reuse of energy, water, and nutrients. Ecological sanitation (EcoSan) technologies, which allow for this recovery and reuse, are an environmentally sound option for the future of sanitation. While the technology to achieve this goal of recovery and reuse exists, a limiting factor is user attitudes and perceptions. Social sciences, especially anthropology, can and should inform engineering projects to ensure socio-cultural sustainability.
Since 2003, rural indigenous Ngäbe communities in Panama have been implementing ecological sanitation projects, mainly double vault urine diverting (DVUD) latrines known as …
National Identity At The Margins Of Europe: History, Affect And Museums In Slovenia, Robert Booth
National Identity At The Margins Of Europe: History, Affect And Museums In Slovenia, Robert Booth
Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the historical and idiographic aspects of national identity in Slovenia and brings empirical data to bear on the question of the effect of museums and their identity narratives on citizen museum attendees. Museums have often been portrayed as such sites of identity construction and as important state-making and state-maintaining institutions that educate citizens on the history and heritage of nationhood and nationality. This empirical data is coupled with ethnographic and discourse analytic approaches to demonstrate that the apprehension of identity is predicated on broader historical, socio-political, emotional, moral and economic aspects of society. This dissertation specifically engages …

Phytoliths, Starch Grains, And Emerging Social Complexity At Tell Zeidan, Syria, Thomas C. Hart
Phytoliths, Starch Grains, And Emerging Social Complexity At Tell Zeidan, Syria, Thomas C. Hart
Doctoral Dissertations
Agriculture and subsistence practices are believed to play an important role in the development of social complexity in Mesopotamia. However, very little palaeoethnobotanical research has been conducted to test this assumption. This dissertation examines comparative plant materials from Southwest Asia and archaeological materials from the 2008–2010 excavations of the Ubaid period regional center of Tell Zeidan, Syria to provide the first microbotanical insights into subsistence practices during the formative stages of social complexity in northern Mesopotamia.
This dissertation is composed of four separate, but related, research projects. The first two examine phytolith and starch grain production patterns in taxa common …
Mortality Risk And Survival In The Aftermath Of The Medieval Black Death, Sharon Dewitte
Mortality Risk And Survival In The Aftermath Of The Medieval Black Death, Sharon Dewitte
Faculty Publications
The medieval Black Death (c. 1347-1351) was one of the most devastating epidemics in human history. It killed tens of millions of Europeans, and recent analyses have shown that the disease targeted elderly adults and individuals who had been previously exposed to physiological stressors. Following the epidemic, there were improvements in standards of living, particularly in dietary quality for all socioeconomic strata. This study investigates whether the combination of the selective mortality of the Black Death and post-epidemic improvements in standards of living had detectable effects on survival and mortality in London. Samples are drawn from several pre- and post-Black …
Truth And Conflict In The Catholic Church: Catholic Jewish Dialogue, Nadia Pandolfo
Truth And Conflict In The Catholic Church: Catholic Jewish Dialogue, Nadia Pandolfo
LMU Theses and Dissertations
A dispute between Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Walter Kasper beginning in the 1960s reveals two competing worldviews within the contemporary Roman Catholic Church with regard to Catholic-Jewish relations: An ontological approach, represented by Ratzinger, which understands the truth to be eternal, unchanging and handed down from above, and a historicalphenomenological approach, represented by Kasper, which understands human experience as dynamically shaping conceptions of the truth. These competing worldviews hold further theological implications (anthropological, Christological, soteriological, ecclesiological, and missiological) in terms of how Catholics approach and understand their relationship with Judaism. This thesis will argue that because Kasper’s worldview is more …

Envisioning Queer Culture: Toward A Theological Framework For Reimagining Sexuality And Sexual Orientation, Danielle Dempsey
Envisioning Queer Culture: Toward A Theological Framework For Reimagining Sexuality And Sexual Orientation, Danielle Dempsey
LMU Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I argue that the both the Church and the Queer Community will benefit from a reexamination of Church teachings on sexuality. I argue that Church’s current position on sexuality does not uphold its own teaching on the importance human dignity, because a sexual ethic that opposes homosexuality contributes to the marginalization of members of the Queer Community. I then argue that Michael Lawler’s and Todd Salzman’s The Sexual Person: Toward a Renewed Catholic Anthropology provides a revisionist theory on sexual ethics that is inclusive of same-sex couples while also paying deference to the fundamental elements of the …
Potential Energy And The Three Odalisques, Yamins Roxanne
Potential Energy And The Three Odalisques, Yamins Roxanne
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this paper is to examine some ways in which BEHAVIOR, POTENTIAL ENERGY, and EMPATHY are critical components in my thinking and work. The impetus for my work is an investigation of how these three components can be manifested in visually expressive and powerful states. My masters thesis, The Three Odalisques, is an attempt at making a space and world which privileges these components and the potential for art to express these ideas. This paper is divided into two parts. The first section is a formal analysis of the pieces in my work from my MFA thesis show. …

From Arrows To Bullets: Sustainable Hunting, Fishing, And Trapping, George S. Apostolopoulos
From Arrows To Bullets: Sustainable Hunting, Fishing, And Trapping, George S. Apostolopoulos
2014 Student Theses
My thesis paper is on hunting, fishing, and trapping in the state of New York. In this thesis I will go over months of my own personal research and experience on the topic. I will provide information on wildlife populations and biodiversity, as I have recorded it over the last two years.
When discussing the topics of hunting, fishing, and trapping in New York State the focus of conversation is often on the moral wrongness and negative impacts on wildlife that these disciplines have. However, those who oppose hunting, fishing, and trapping not only overlook their environmental educational value, environmental …
Middle Palaeolithic Regional Land-Use & Behavior In Dutch And Belgian Limburg: Integrating Data From Upland Open-Air Sites, Philip Glauberman
Middle Palaeolithic Regional Land-Use & Behavior In Dutch And Belgian Limburg: Integrating Data From Upland Open-Air Sites, Philip Glauberman
Doctoral Dissertations
The Palaeolithic archaeological database of northwest Europe is biased towards evidence originating in caves, rockshelters, fluvial, and littoral settings. Theories of regional land use patterns are therefore based on samples of behavioral residues from only certain parts of the environment. In addition, abundant and often ignored evidence for Palaeolithic land use is found in surface lithic assemblages occurring on elevated terraces and plateaus in river catchments. Integrating technological data from these landforms is necessary to complement this unbalanced picture of land use.
This dissertation presents the results of analysis of lithic assemblages from elevated surfaces in the region of Dutch …

Immigration To Manchester, New Hampshire, Sally Ward, Justin R. Young, Curt D. Grimm
Carsey Publications
This brief analyzes immigration and refugee resettlement in Manchester and the effects on the city’s demographic composition, as well as the implications for its future. Authors Sally Ward, Justin Young, and Curt Grimm report that Manchester, New Hampshire, like the nation, is experiencing a new wave of immigration. In the past, most of the city’s immigrants tended to come from Canada and Europe. Today, they are most likely from Latin America, followed by Asia and, to a lesser extent, Africa. The rate of refugee placement in Manchester has remained relatively steady since the 1990s. Of all refugees who arrived in …

Communicating Shakespeare: How High School Educators Should Approach The Great Playwright, Samantha Defilippe
Communicating Shakespeare: How High School Educators Should Approach The Great Playwright, Samantha Defilippe
Honors Program Theses and Projects
This study is being done to show how relating Shakespeare’s plays, specifically the characters, themes, and events in his plays, to high school students can increase their appreciation and understanding of the famous writer. It discusses better methods for teaching Shakespeare than line-by-line interpretation so that students may see the valuable insight his works have to offer, rather than skimming the readings and using unreliable online resources, such as Sparknotes, because they are uninterested. Previous research has shown the importance of trying to relate readings to students so they are able to form a connection with the characters and main …

The Lifepump: A Strategy For Introducing Affordable Clean Water To The Developing World, Kristin Mcgeorge
The Lifepump: A Strategy For Introducing Affordable Clean Water To The Developing World, Kristin Mcgeorge
Theses
The intent of introducing a new technique for purifying water in the developing world is to make a healthier and easier method of collecting and cleaning water for human consumption when there is a chance of causing disease from the pathogens in the water source.
However, the currently implemented systems and products used for water filtration and purification in developing countries go unused or are abandoned once they break down; the local people go back to filtering water in less effective ways.
The reason for the lack of use of these "foreign" designed tools is because they are not accepted …

Parallel Sessions (Marketing Paradigm): A Social Marketing Framework For The Development Of Public Awareness Programs - Pakistan’S Perspective, Sarfraz Ali Kiyani
International Conference on Marketing
Marketing has become the key factor in deciding the success and failure of not only the enterprises but also social causes. The impact of such marketing tactic is eventually determined in the behavior of the target group. This paper is designed to discuss the development of public awareness programs to mitigate risks regarding floods and other natural hazards. Such mitigation can be done by two ways i.e. Structural and Non-structural. Undertaking a good plan covers the steps one should take before, during or after a hazard that will not only minimize risks but also lessen the injuries and Protect people‟s …
