Doing Theology Through Discernment: An Analysis Of Teresa Of Avila’S Interior Castle, Lydia Hawkins May 2014

Doing Theology Through Discernment: An Analysis Of Teresa Of Avila’S Interior Castle, Lydia Hawkins

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Modernism's notion of reason-based knowledge as the most valid has greatly impacted the practice of theology. As theology moved into the academic world, experiential modes of gaining knowledge of God began to be viewed with skepticism and were divorced from intellectual modes of gaining knowledge of God. "Doing theology," as pre-modern Christians understood it, is no longer widely practiced in the field of theology. While modernism narrowed what is considered valid knowledge to reason-based inquiry, post-modernism has found modernism's conclusion not entirely adequate and is broadening the scope for gaining modes of valid knowledge. Applying the post-modernist approach to Teresa …

Mode, Method, And Medium: The Affordance Of Online Tutorials In The Writing Center, Erik V. Holtz May 2014

Mode, Method, And Medium: The Affordance Of Online Tutorials In The Writing Center, Erik V. Holtz

Honors Scholar Theses

While the body of literature regarding online tutorials in the writing center is growing, researchers seem hesitant to fully endorse, or even commend, online writing tutorials. This seems appropriate for work in communication theory and human-computer interaction; working across a medium may be different, but this could create new and interesting ways of tutoring. This research reports on a comparative analysis of online and in-person tutoring at three different universities, focusing on tutor self-perceptions and on affordances, a concept drawn from systems engineering, human-computer interaction and ecological psychology. Unstructured interviewing is used to create a set of preliminary affordances of …

HIV Infection: Solitary Work, Silent Suffering

Beliefs about Responsibility for Health

and the Ability to Impact Disease Progression

Cynthia Frank, PhD

University of Connecticut 2014

In contemporary Western society, health has become a personal and moral responsibility. People are blamed for their unhealthy or risky behavior and for acquiring certain diseases according to socially and culturally constructed norms. HIV is an infectious disease that is imbued with moral overtones and stigma, often multidimensional, creating an illness in which responsibility (for acquisition, transmission, and viral suppression) is an overarching theme. Thus, it represents a unique vehicle for exploring belief systems related …

Watch What 'Whe-Eat' - A Cultural Analysis Of The Gluten-Free Diet, Monique Kelly May 2014

Watch What 'Whe-Eat' - A Cultural Analysis Of The Gluten-Free Diet, Monique Kelly

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

Ten years ago, most people had never heard of celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, but awareness of these conditions have recently exploded, resulting in a craze to purchase gluten-free food items. Walk down the isles of Whole Foods or any other grocery store today and you will see labels for gluten free everywhere. These products were originally designed for people who have been diagnosed with a gluten digestive disorder. However, the gluten-free diet has expanded beyond those diagnosed with gluten sensitivity because millions of people are claiming it makes them feel better or helps them lose weight. In this paper, …

It's Just A Number: Influences Of Body Image Pressures On Diii Female Athletes, Christina Mccourt May 2014

It's Just A Number: Influences Of Body Image Pressures On Diii Female Athletes, Christina Mccourt

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

There are strong societal norms around what it means to be a woman and be an athlete. These norms get reinforced so much that female athletes internalize these ideas to the point that they begin to change their habits to better fit the demands of society. Being an athlete at a high level creates physical pressures for young women, but the extra mental pressures forced upon them can be detrimental both mentally and physically. The months I spent researching female athletes at Colby were intended to help answer several questions. The first was what pressures female athletes felt that they …

Leader-Follower Unity: A Grounded Theory Based On Perceptions Of Leadership And Followership Experts In The United States, Evgenia Prilipko

Theses & Dissertations

Leaders and followers are equally important for organizational success and development. While leadership training is widely available, very few training sessions and courses are offered on cultivating follower skills. It is essential to educate and transform individuals to become effective followers. This study identifies the most important characteristics to be exhibited by individuals in the follower role as perceived by followership and leadership experts in the United States. The theoretical framework used for this study is 12 follower attributes proposed by Antelo, Henderson, and St. Clair (2010). Seven scholars were interviewed: Ira Chaleff, Dr. Joanne Ciulla, Dr. Gene Dixon, Dr. …

Measuring "Problems Of Human Behavior": The Eugenic Origins Of Yale's Institute Of Psychology, 1921-1929, John Doyle

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

The Institute of Psychology at Yale was established in 1924 to study what its founders perceived as “problems of human behavior.” The Institute was Yale President James Angell’s first major step towards making the University a pre-eminent center for psychological research in the 1920s and 1930s. Endowed for a five-year term by the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Fund, the Institute brought three distinguished faculty to Yale: comparative psychologist Robert M. Yerkes, anthropologist Clark D. Wissler, and psychologist Raymond Dodge. While the Institute has been briefly cited in the historical literature as a precursor to the larger Institute of Human Relations …

Religion: Good Or Bad?, Emalie Ratt May 2014

Religion: Good Or Bad?, Emalie Ratt

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Religion is a very complicated concept for many people, but religion can be seen in every corner of the world and its effects come in many different shapes and sizes. One word that can be seen as an effect or that is simply associated often with religion is violence. Violence like religion comes in many different forms and can be seen very easily in the world around us. Many people have written on the concepts of religion and violence and how they are connected with each other. But it …

Statistical Power Of Alternative Structural Models For Comparative Effectiveness Research: Advantages Of Modeling Unreliability, Emil N. Coman, Eugen Iordache, Lisa Dierker, Judith Fifield, Jean J. Schensul, Suzanne Suggs, Russell Barbour May 2014

Statistical Power Of Alternative Structural Models For Comparative Effectiveness Research: Advantages Of Modeling Unreliability, Emil N. Coman, Eugen Iordache, Lisa Dierker, Judith Fifield, Jean J. Schensul, Suzanne Suggs, Russell Barbour

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The advantages of modeling the unreliability of outcomes when evaluating the comparative effectiveness of health interventions is illustrated. Adding an action-research intervention component to a regular summer job program for youth was expected to help in preventing risk behaviors. A series of simple two-group alternative structural equation models are compared to test the effect of the intervention on one key attitudinal outcome in terms of model fit and statistical power with Monte Carlo simulations. Some models presuming parameters equal across the intervention and comparison groups were under- powered to detect the intervention effect, yet modeling the unreliability of the outcome …

Toward An Ecotheological Anthropology, Peter Garcia May 2014

Toward An Ecotheological Anthropology, Peter Garcia

Seminary Masters Theses

The image of God has carried with it a special designation for humanity within the panoply of life on earth. This project attempts to reorient and expand theological anthropology to include the ecological dimension in Christian perspective to cultivate an understanding of the ecological self. This project will place traditional interpretations of what it means to be human into conversation with twentieth-century ecological philosophies and Native American spirituality in order to broaden the Christian imagination for understanding ourselves within creation. Vine Deloria’s analyses of Western temporal thinking and spatial thinking demonstrated by Native worldviews provides perspective for necessary theological shifts …

Neither (Fully) Here Nor There: Negotiation Narratives Of Nashville's Kurdish Youth, Stephen Ross Goddard May 2014

Neither (Fully) Here Nor There: Negotiation Narratives Of Nashville's Kurdish Youth, Stephen Ross Goddard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Nashville, Tennessee, is home to nearly fifteen thousand ethnic Kurds. They have come in four distinct groups over the course of two decades to escape the hardship and horror of brutal central government policies, some directed toward their extinction. Many of that number are young people who were infants or toddlers when they were whisked away to the safety of temporary way stations prior to their arrival in the United States. What that means is that these youth have spent the majority of their formative years within the context of the American culture. This thesis is a study of how …

Brain-Based Worship: Re-Membering The Mind-Body Connection, Paula Champion-Jones May 2014

Brain-Based Worship: Re-Membering The Mind-Body Connection, Paula Champion-Jones

Doctor of Ministry

Historically, it has been believed that Christian formation occurs primarily in the context of worship. Because both traditional and contemporary worship services are routinely structured around the skills of persuasive rhetoric and logic, most worship services effectively ignore the impact of experiential, embodied knowledge. Recent research in neuroscience has proven that humans are sensory-motor-emotional-thinking beings who learn best when body, brain, and emotions are simultaneously engaged. A fresh paradigm for teaching, brain-based leaning, is proving to result in learning that is more memorable, more likely to result in long-term change in the behavior of the learner, and more likely to …
