Being, Narrative, And Ethics: A Hermeneutical-Phenomenological Inquiry Into The Ontology Of Ethics, Paul Lucas Goldberg May 2014

Being, Narrative, And Ethics: A Hermeneutical-Phenomenological Inquiry Into The Ontology Of Ethics, Paul Lucas Goldberg

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

In Being and Time, Heidegger articulates his understanding of the ontological difference and the Being of the human-like entity, or Dasein. Dasein’s Being, as existential, consists in the care structures of projection, thrownness, and fallenness, the unitary meaning of which is grounded in the ecstatical temporalizing modes of future, Present, and having-been. However, despite his deeply insightful ontological analysis of human Being, Heidegger rejects ontical ethical manifestations of the human as constitutive of Dasein. We claim that this neglect is the result of his initial focus on fallenness as one of Dasein’s constitutive ontological structures. Thus, we seek to re-Interpret …

Social And Cultural Capitol In Formal One-On-One Mentoring Relationships, Madeleine Emily Hines May 2014

Social And Cultural Capitol In Formal One-On-One Mentoring Relationships, Madeleine Emily Hines

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

In recent years, formal mentorship programs for at-risk youth have grown increasingly in the United States. I investigate the ways in which mentoring models in these programs do or do not address the need to transmit social capital and cultural capital to the youth that they serve. Through observations of mentor- mentee matches, semistructured interviews of mentors and organizational staff, and data collection at two nonprofit organizations with formal mentoring components, this paper explores the ways in which these programs unknowingly set goals to transfer social and cultural capital to their mentees, and how mentors attain these goals.

The Haitian Immigrant Experience In The Shenandoah Valley, Kelli Renee Williams May 2014

The Haitian Immigrant Experience In The Shenandoah Valley, Kelli Renee Williams

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The following study provides a presentation on how immigrants of the Haitian Diaspora construct their social selves and what they believe constitutes a positive social self within the context of the American South. In asking how these immigrants present themselves and their connection to their country of origin, this study contributes to existing literature on the presentation of self, transnationalism, minority relations, and immigration in the American South. Their identities are also constructed in association with socio-historic-race relations and prejudices long established in the Southern United States. This prompts these individuals to produce accounts that are designed to confront these …

"Transforming Care Through Disruptive Design": Incorporating A Midwifery Model Of Care Into Obstetric Practices, Lauren Marsh May 2014

"Transforming Care Through Disruptive Design": Incorporating A Midwifery Model Of Care Into Obstetric Practices, Lauren Marsh

Senior Theses

Maternal and child health outcomes in the United States are far poorer than in other industrialized nations. To improve women’s experiences with the maternity care system, nurse-midwife Sharon Schindler-Rising developed the CenteringPregnancy (CP) group model of prenatal care (PNC). Research comparing CP with ‘traditional’ one-on-one PNC has found that implementing CP results in decreased rates of preterm birth and low birth weight, increased rates of breastfeeding, and improved outcomes for women who typically experience health disparities, including African Americans. Documented success of the model in the Greenville Health System convinced the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services of …

What's Wrong With The Christian West, Joseph Studemeyer May 2014

What's Wrong With The Christian West, Joseph Studemeyer

Senior Theses

Western Christian groups are losing significant numbers of adherents in the area formerly known as Christendom (Western Europe and European-dominated former colonies), a trend which seems to be quickening with time. In addition, the same Western Christian denominations are in the midst of an unprecedented period of fragmentation, with many splitting over questions of doctrine and practice. More controversially, traditionalists both within the Western churches and outside of them have claimed that the Western denominations are also experiencing a qualitative decline, asserting that the Christianity of the West has been doctrinally compromised. This thesis posits an underlying philosophical reason for …

Exploring Obstacles To Perinatal Care-Seeking Behavior In Women Of Rural Odisha, India Using A Community Based Participatory Research Approach, Sarah Law, Runjhun Bhatia

Senior Theses

This project resulted from collaboration between USC student organization GlobeMed and the Alternative for Rural Movement (ARM), a non-governmental organization in Odisha, India. Rajendra Rana, the head of ARM, expressed the need to delineate the factors underlying the tendency of rural Odishan women to deliver with unskilled birth attendants as opposed to institutionally. A literature review was conducted to explore possible economic, cultural, and social factors. During five weeks in Odisha, discussions with women's groups, community health workers, and ARM staff members built on the literature review. A preliminary survey and plan for its dissemination were developed. The community based …

Latinos In America: A Consideration Of Food Accessibility Factors With Implications For The Indianapolis Community, Abigail C. Robison

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Studies discuss personal choices or cultural influences of food consumption, but they may not integrate these findings with the accessibility of food. These factors cannot be ignored when considering the health of populations. Understanding the intricate relationship between food choices and food accessibility is vital to the realm of urban public health. This paper attempts to investigate these relationships and relate the findings to the local sphere, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Take It But Don't Fake It: Using Self-Awareness To Reduce Fabrications On Personality Tests, Rebekah Lynn Hale May 2014

Take It But Don't Fake It: Using Self-Awareness To Reduce Fabrications On Personality Tests, Rebekah Lynn Hale

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Applicants have been shown to fake responses on personality tests when applying for a job to appear as if they have characteristics most similar to ones that management defines as ideal for the given position. The purpose of this study was to propose and test a method to decrease faking on personality tests. Participants took a cognitive ability test, an emotional intelligence measure, and personality scales online. In the second part of the study, participants read an accountant job description and then either played a hand-held game (control condition) or filled out a biographical questionnaire (treatment condition) designed to increase …

Eritrean Resettlement In Indianapolis, John Andrew Traylor May 2014

Eritrean Resettlement In Indianapolis, John Andrew Traylor

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This project has been designed to look into the challenges of resettlement for Eritreans moving to live in Indianapolis. The discussion of this work follows the footsteps of research on refugee resettlement by asking and responding to some of the common questions surrounding resettlement: why choose to resettle; what is a refugee'S initial response to entry into a host country; what is the resettlement process like; how does a refugee cope with their resettlement difficulties; and what are the prospects for future generations? This work will provide answers to these questions by analyzing the case of three resettled immigrants living …

Role Model Fathers Or Deadbeat Dads? A Study Of Peromyscus Paternal Behavior, Taylor Wapshott May 2014

Role Model Fathers Or Deadbeat Dads? A Study Of Peromyscus Paternal Behavior, Taylor Wapshott

Senior Theses

Paternal behavior is a largely understudied and poorly understood topic, especially in mammalian species. Many current mammalian models for paternal behavior use a comparative approach, taking advantage of natural differences in behavior between closely related species. This study compared paternal behavior in two rodent species, namely Peromyscus maniculatus (BW) and Peromyscus polionotus (PO). PO rodents have been shown to be monogamous, but there have been no studies of their paternal behavior at this time. 10 PO males and 12 BW males were filmed in their home cage for a 10 minute period following initial disturbance of their nest and removal …

Love And Marriage: Domestic Relations And Matrimonial Strategies Among The Enslaved In The Atlantic World, Tyler Dunsdon Parry May 2014

Love And Marriage: Domestic Relations And Matrimonial Strategies Among The Enslaved In The Atlantic World, Tyler Dunsdon Parry

Theses and Dissertations

"Love and Marriage: Domestic Relations and Matrimonial Strategies Among the Enslaved in the Atlantic World" argues that the cultural and sociopolitical dimensions of slave marriage were primary issues for diasporic Africans, abolitionists, and proslavery apologists whose lives were intertwined by the cultural and economic connections that framed the Atlantic World throughout the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. Through analyzing the interplay between legislation, cultural practice, and political discourse in the early periods of colonial slavery, I first show how matrimonial patterns from Atlantic Africa and Britain were re-imagined by diasporic Africans enslaved in Bermuda, the British West Indies, and colonial …

Labeling And Framing Of Human Trafficking Victimhood, Elizabeth Regina Ramirez Kemp May 2014

Labeling And Framing Of Human Trafficking Victimhood, Elizabeth Regina Ramirez Kemp

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Victims and victimhood are socially constructed concepts that are given meaning through interaction. Human trafficking victims face labels that are interpreted through a variety of frames due to the complex nature of discourses surrounding human trafficking. Based on 304 hours of participant observation and 10 semi-structured interviews with service providers, law enforcement, and survivors of human trafficking I first seek to identify the ways service providers and law enforcement officials use labels and neutralization techniques to support an overall frame of human trafficking as an issue of human rights. Second, I analyze how their efforts to neutralize the label of …

Conflict On The Mesa: Assessing Defensibility Of Plaza-Oriented Villages In The Salinas Pueblo Province, New Mexico, Daniel Mark Sumner May 2014

Conflict On The Mesa: Assessing Defensibility Of Plaza-Oriented Villages In The Salinas Pueblo Province, New Mexico, Daniel Mark Sumner

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Previous archaeological investigations of plaza-oriented villages in the Salinas Pueblo Province investigated the reasons people may have aggregated in these larger towns. The threat of warfare and the need for defense is one possible explanation for the construction of plaza-oriented villages, whose layout is seemingly intended to limit access. This thesis further assesses the defensibility of these sites using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The use of a GIS approach offers an opportunity to evaluate the potential for line-of-sight communications and inter-visibility between the plaza pueblo villages on Chupadera Mesa, factors which influenced their ability to signal allies and anticipate attack. …

Squeaky Gears: Bicycling, Dissent, And Political Innovations, Braden Bernards May 2014

Squeaky Gears: Bicycling, Dissent, And Political Innovations, Braden Bernards

2014 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award

The Reflective Essay describes a research journey that started from an idea that was significantly revised during the course of his deep and thoughtful engagement with sources and with people. The ascent of bicycling in the past decades has been the concerted result of political innovations. Cities across America have begun repurposing space to accommodate the bicycle. In examining this social trend and its impetus, this paper locates dissent as the primary vehicle of transit change in favor of bicycling. Contextualizing the bicycle in urban theory, critical spatial analysis, and its own history of being a radical technology, the paper …

The Unknown Puppet Masters Of The Modern Day American Diet And How To Cut To The Strings: A Look Into Parasites And Applied Kinesiology, Kirstie E. Carrizales

2014 Student Theses

Many Americans suffer recurring health problems that are accepted as "normal" in American society. From panic attacks to digestive problems, Americans have been getting sicker and sicker. At the same time, we find ourselves craving more processed foods and sweets. And how could we not, it's very hard to find food that has not been contaminated with processed parts. Western medicine provides multiple pills both prescription and non-prescription to "ease" our pains. But what is the underlying cause? And what is a real cure? To understand what is really going on with our bodies, we must scale ourselves down and …

Academic Service-Learning’S Impact On Students’ Social Capital, Megan Jean Anderson May 2014

Academic Service-Learning’S Impact On Students’ Social Capital, Megan Jean Anderson

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines whether there is a relationship between social capital and participation in academic service-learning courses within higher education. Through designing, implementing, and analyzing a survey which was given to students enrolled in courses with an academic service-learning component at Eastern Michigan University (n=127), the role between these two variables was tested. Social capital was measured through the total number of relationships formed at participants’ academic service learning site, whether these relationships were strong or weak ties; the frequency of interaction with said ties; and individuals who could be used as a reference. Results suggest the number of individuals …
