Hot Culture, Cold Halls: Narrating History And Healing At Sites Of Trauma, Emily L. Burde
Hot Culture, Cold Halls: Narrating History And Healing At Sites Of Trauma, Emily L. Burde
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
With the increased threat of geopolitical violence in the 21st century (bioterrorism, nuclear war, government upheaval, and the like), and at a time when most of the world’s citizens are desensitized to extreme forms of violence, it is necessary for museum professionals to undertake the mission of bringing order out of such chaos to educate the public by creating a tangible truth. By “cooling off” the material remains of a mass trauma through processing, registrars begin a chain of events that ultimately allows curators to establish effective visual narratives of the build-up of tensions, the culmination of the events, …
Development Of A New Mindset For Elearning Pedagogy: For The Teacher And The Learner, Tara Devi S. Ashok
Development Of A New Mindset For Elearning Pedagogy: For The Teacher And The Learner, Tara Devi S. Ashok
Current Issues in Emerging eLearning
Teaching, like learning, involves a personal journey. This researched narrative records the role of technology integration in one instructor’s teaching practice, and examines how literature in the field accounts for ways eLearning technologies have kept the author and her students engaged in the process of learning. Dr. Tara Ashok of the University of Massachusetts Boston chronicles the personal eLearning tool kit she has selected for effective delivery of contents in different teaching formats. She posits the importance of developing a new mindset to adapt to emerging technologies and examines the literature and her own experiences suggesting how and why, eLearning …

Too Far From Mecca, Too Close To Peking: The Ethnic Violence And The Making Of Chinese Muslim Identity, 1821-1871, Jingyuan Qian
History Honors Projects
This article examines the ethnic conflicts during the 19th century in Yunnan, China. Between 1821 and 1871 a series of ethnic riots took place between the dominant Han Chinese and the Hui, a Muslim ethnic group in Yunnan. This article attempts to explain how the Hui’s blended identity as both Chinese and Mulims caused the two ethnic group’s misconceptions of each other, and how these misconceptions were reinforced by the nation-building efforts of Imperial China. This project also sheds lights on the contemporary ethnic relationship on China’s western frontier.
Development From Abroad? Transnational Remittance And The Institutionalization Of Diaspora Engagement In Africa., Todd Bryan Combs
Development From Abroad? Transnational Remittance And The Institutionalization Of Diaspora Engagement In Africa., Todd Bryan Combs
Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the impacts of transnational remittances and the institutionalization of diaspora engagement on development in Africa. Remittances to Africa are now around $50 billion annually and larger than inflows of foreign aid and investment. African governments continue to realize the potential contributions of their diasporas to development through not only remittances but through skills, expertise-sharing, and coordination of efforts. In 2000, four African countries had national-level institutions nominally dedicated to the diaspora and its potential to effect development: now 36 of the 54 governments have such an institution. An assessment of the political economy of remittances and governmental …

Homo sapiens sapiens is arguably one of the most fascinating and complex species that has ever existed on Earth. On the surface, we appear to be highly diversified, and we interpret the world around us in a variety of ways. These interpretations shape the way that we live our lives on this planet, and inform our wide array of kinship patterns, marriage ceremonies, languages, religious beliefs, and more. However, for all of these differences, we are the same at our core: we contain relatively the same DNA, and might generally share similar goals and aspirations for ourselves and those we …

How Professors Infuse Critical Thinking Into College Courses, Nancy K. Lennon
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Abstract
The purpose of this case study was to explore professors’ understandings about how they infuse critical thinking within Signature courses in one private Catholic university, where a strong commitment exists to develop students’ critical thinking skills through the Core Curriculum. This qualitative study investigated the views of 12 professors in 6 disciplines as to how they approach the teaching and assessment of critical thinking skills within three Signature courses of the Core Curriculum.
Data collection included documentation and one-on-one interviews with the professors, who taught Signature courses during the Spring 2011 semester. Through a cross analysis of the data, the …
Party Animals Or Responsible Men: Social Class, Race, And Masculinity On Campus, Brian N. Sweeney
Party Animals Or Responsible Men: Social Class, Race, And Masculinity On Campus, Brian N. Sweeney
Faculty of Sociology/Anthropology Publications
Studies of collegiate party and hookup culture tend to overlook variation along social class and racial/ethnic lines. Drawing on interview data at a “party school” in the Midwest, I examine the meanings and practices of drinking and casual sex for a group of class and race-diverse fraternity men. While more privileged men draw on ideas of age and gender to construct college as a time to let loose, indulge, and explore, men from disadvantaged backgrounds express greater ambivalence toward partying. For these men, partying presents both opportunities and dilemmas and taps into tensions inherent in being upwardly mobile college men. …

Generation Peace: Peace Education To Unify A Globalized Society, Jocelyn Coombs
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The purpose of this study is to discuss how Peace Education may build on the objectives of Global and Diversity Education, and how it may enhance these objectives in higher education. Through a qualitative study of survey data and analysis of curriculum and diversity programs at Bridgewater State University, I examine connections between the diversity-oriented campus environment and student attitudes towards diversity. I use responses from a fifty-question survey distributed to over 300 students at BSU to analyze student attitudes towards diversity, individualism, and political engagement. While students enjoy meeting people from diverse backgrounds, a significant percent of respondents do …
The Construction Of Ethnoreligious Identity Groups In Syria: Loyalties And Tensions In The Syrian Civil War, Eliott Rousseau
The Construction Of Ethnoreligious Identity Groups In Syria: Loyalties And Tensions In The Syrian Civil War, Eliott Rousseau
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The ongoing civil war in Syria is characterized by its inherent complexity, often leaving non-Syrian onlookers and geopolitical stakeholders confused and fatigued. In a war with such a high human toll—refugees hemorrhaging from Syria’s borders, the death toll ever-climbing, and a generation of children growing up with the fighting—there is no room for mystification. This research project contextualizes the Syrian Civil War using anthropological concepts of religion and ethnicity. The ways in which religion and ethnicity help construct identity and group loyalty among Syria’s diverse population are examined. In particular, the role of membership in specific identity groups in creating …
Exploring Nurse Educators' Perceptions Of The Subcultures Within Nursing As A Means To Bridge The Practice-Education Gap: Findings From An Ethnographic Study, Susan M. Strouse
Exploring Nurse Educators' Perceptions Of The Subcultures Within Nursing As A Means To Bridge The Practice-Education Gap: Findings From An Ethnographic Study, Susan M. Strouse
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on: Friday, April 4, 2014:
Nurse Educators function at the intersection of three subcultures within nursing: academia, service (practice) and organizational cultures. Each of these subcultures has unique characteristics that at times lead to conflict. Nursing education is known for passing on the ideal or desirable culture to their students. However, the manifest, or 'real world' culture can be in sharp contrast to what the students learn. As part of a focused ethnography on the overall culture of nursing, nurse educator participants described these subcultures and their difficulties in navigating their different values, beliefs and practices. Nurse educators …

College Students’ Attitudes Towards Adults With Developmental Disabilities: Does Direct Contact Make A Difference?, Caroline E. Greene
Honors College Theses
Data were collected from thirty college students who participated in an alternative break trip and approximately seventy college students who did not attend the trip. Study subjects served as counselors at a camp for adults with developmental disabilities. Data were collected using five measures: a) before the week started, students filled out a survey which questioned their comfort level and attitude when interacting with this population; b) this same survey was administered to a random sample of college students who did not attend the break trip c) at camp, students kept a journal throughout the week documenting their experiences; d) …

School Climate And Building Highly Effective Schools: How Student Perception Of School Structure And Supportive Learning Environments Affect Their Enjoyment Of School, Amber D'Nay Simpson
Dissertations
Education reformers have long sought to apply scientific framework analysis to engineer the ideal system in which both students and teachers are highly successful. Grounded in the evidence based theoretical framework of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), many academicians and practitioners are now focusing on determinants of school structure and supportive learning environments to bolster students’ enjoyment of school, which supports increased positive outcomes. The Abbreviated School Climate Survey (Student Version) (Ding, Liu and Berkowitz, 2011) instrument was designed to explore student perspective of school climate as an indicator of student outcomes based on seven variables. The purpose of this …

A Conversation Between Kip Jones And Patricia Leavy: Arts-Based Research, Performative Social Science And Working On The Margins, Kip Jones, Patricia Leavy
The Qualitative Report
This paper reports a conversation between international pioneers in ArtsBased Research and Performative Social Science, Patricia Leavy and Kip Jones. They begin by delineating the differences between research and/or dissemination that use tools from the Arts in their production. Leavy turns to her fiction writing as an example, while Jones discusses the making of his research-based short film, Rufus Stone. The conversation then turns to how these novel approaches have changed the way in which they work and these efforts in relation to the academy. The concept of “audience” is raised. Both then give examples of taking alternative routes in …

I'M Not Just A Statistic: A Qualitative Analysis Of Sexual Assault Survivors, Kelsey Lynn Ruane
I'M Not Just A Statistic: A Qualitative Analysis Of Sexual Assault Survivors, Kelsey Lynn Ruane
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Empirical research shows that as many as 1 in 4 women in college will be raped or sexually assaulted. Despite the overwhelming prevalence of these crimes, survivors of sexual violence often feel uncertain, isolated, and fearful of judgment when coming forward to authorities. Even amidst improvements in sexual violence education and response, it appears there is still something missing in the way that sexual crimes are handled. This research, based on in-depth interviews with women who have been assaulted or raped, addresses the processes of meaning-making women use following an experience of sexual violence. Common themes include victim blaming, emotion …
