Implications For The Mille Lacs Lake Fishery With Continued Enforcement Of The 1837 Treaty Of St. Peters, Matthew Steffes Aug 2014

Implications For The Mille Lacs Lake Fishery With Continued Enforcement Of The 1837 Treaty Of St. Peters, Matthew Steffes

Journal of Public Law and Policy

Mille Lacs Lake, one of Minnesota’s over 13,000 lakes, holds a reputation for being one of the best walleye fisheries in Minnesota, as well as being a fishing destination for anglers across the nation. In 1999 the Supreme Court held that the Mille Lacs Band of Chippewa Indians retained hunting and fishing rights on ceded land that were granted to them in the 1837 Treaty of St. Peters. Part of this ruling allowed the Mille Lacs tribe to continue their commercial walleye fishing operation on Mille Lacs Lake. Since the Supreme Court’s ruling, the walleye population on Mille Lacs Lake …

Of Reptiles And Velcro: The Brain's Negativity Bias And Persuasion, Kenneth D. Chestek Aug 2014

Of Reptiles And Velcro: The Brain's Negativity Bias And Persuasion, Kenneth D. Chestek

Faculty Articles

Negative political advertising has become commonplace for one simple reason it works Cognitive pyschologists attribute this to a phenomenon they call the brain's ÔÇ£negativity biasÔÇØ That is our brains are more apt to process and retain negative information as opposed to positive information As one neuropsychologist has put it ÔÇ£your brain is like Velcro for negative experiences and Teflon for positive onesÔÇØCognitive psychologists have concluded that bad stimuli have significantly more power across a broad range of psychological phenomena What are the implications of this finding for legal writing For example how do judges respond to negative themes in briefs …

A Transdiagnostic Social Skills Intervention: Using A Structured Story To Teach Children How To Ask A Friend To Play, Elizabeth Santy Aug 2014

A Transdiagnostic Social Skills Intervention: Using A Structured Story To Teach Children How To Ask A Friend To Play, Elizabeth Santy

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

An (independent samples comparison) controlled study was conducted to assess the efficacy of a novel approach to social skills training for children in a local socialization group at Knippenberg, Patterson & Associates (KPA). The treatment condition involved the combination of a Structured Story (i.e., novel bibliotherapy technique for children with social skills deficits), and a behavioral rehearsal (or role-play) segment, where the children practiced the target social skill featured in the Structure Story. The control group did not receive the Structured Story nor the behavioral rehearsal. Children in both groups engaged in ten-minutes of free play that was videorecorded for …

Using The R-Pas' Aggressive Content Score For The Evaluation Of Aggressive Behaviors In Children, Rebecca Dehass Aug 2014

Using The R-Pas' Aggressive Content Score For The Evaluation Of Aggressive Behaviors In Children, Rebecca Dehass

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

The Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS) was developed in 2011 as an alternative to the previous Comprehensive System. The goal was to improve the psychometrics, and particularly the validity, of this assessment method. The norms for children were questionable in the Comprehensive system (e.g., outdated, low numbers of subjects) and validity studies for children were sparse. One of the indicators included in the R-PAS system, the aggressive content indicator (AgC), is intended to reflect aggressive behavior, but few studies have examined the validity of this indicator. This study examined the validity of AgC in a sample of 32 children and …

Post-Transplant High-Dose Cyclophosphamide For The Prevention Of Graft-Versus-Host Disease, Ahmad Samer Al-Homsi, Tara S. Roy, Kelli Cole, Benjamin Feng, Ulrich Duffner Aug 2014

Post-Transplant High-Dose Cyclophosphamide For The Prevention Of Graft-Versus-Host Disease, Ahmad Samer Al-Homsi, Tara S. Roy, Kelli Cole, Benjamin Feng, Ulrich Duffner

Peer Reviewed Articles

Cyclophosphamide's lack of hematopoietic stem cell toxicity and its unique effects on the immune system have prompted several investigators to explore its potential for the prevention of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). In haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplants, post-transplant cyclophosphamide together with standard prophylaxis reduces the incidence of GVHD to acceptable rates without the need for T cell depletion. In matched related and unrelated donor settings, cyclophosphamide alone has produced encouraging results. In particular, the low incidence of chronic GVHD is noteworthy. Here, we present a review of the current understanding of the mechanism of action of post-transplant cyclophosphamide and summarize the …

Neuroinflammation And Neurologic Deficits In Diabetes Linked To Brain Accumulation Of Amylin, Sarah Srodulski, Savita Sharma, Adam B. Bachstetter, Jennifer M. Brelsfoard, Conrado Pascual, Xinmin Simon Xie, Kathryn E. Saatman, Linda J. Van Eldik, Florin Despa Aug 2014

Neuroinflammation And Neurologic Deficits In Diabetes Linked To Brain Accumulation Of Amylin, Sarah Srodulski, Savita Sharma, Adam B. Bachstetter, Jennifer M. Brelsfoard, Conrado Pascual, Xinmin Simon Xie, Kathryn E. Saatman, Linda J. Van Eldik, Florin Despa

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: We recently found that brain tissue from patients with type-2 diabetes (T2D) and cognitive impairment contains deposits of amylin, an amyloidogenic hormone synthesized and co-secreted with insulin by pancreatic β-cells. Amylin deposition is promoted by chronic hypersecretion of amylin (hyperamylinemia), which is common in humans with obesity or pre-diabetic insulin resistance. Human amylin oligomerizes quickly when oversecreted, which is toxic, induces inflammation in pancreatic islets and contributes to the development of T2D. Here, we tested the hypothesis that accumulation of oligomerized amylin affects brain function.

METHODS: In contrast to amylin from humans, rodent amylin is neither amyloidogenic nor cytotoxic. …

Transplantation Of Neurospheres Derived From Genetically Modified Adult Bone Marrow Stromal Cells Following A Controlled Cortical Impact (Cci): Effects On Transplant Survival And Behavioral Recovery, Austin M. Favory Aug 2014

Transplantation Of Neurospheres Derived From Genetically Modified Adult Bone Marrow Stromal Cells Following A Controlled Cortical Impact (Cci): Effects On Transplant Survival And Behavioral Recovery, Austin M. Favory

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects thousands of individuals annually who have limited options for treatment. The use of mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow (BMSC) has therapeutic potential, free from ethical ramifications. Previous transplant studies have grafted naive BMSCs into injured brain tissue or infused them intraventricularly (i.v.) with varying results (Bonilla 2012, Osani 2012, Bakhitany 2010, Li 2009).. In this study, we transplanted Notch-induced rat BMSCs (BMSC-NICD) with properties of neuroprogenitor-like cells, into the rat controlled cortical impact (CCI) model of TBI. Adult rat BMSC were harvested from femur and tibia of adult Fischer 344 rats. These cells …

Sexy But Not Sexual: An Examination Of The Sexual Narratives Of African American Adolescent Females, April Timmons Aug 2014

Sexy But Not Sexual: An Examination Of The Sexual Narratives Of African American Adolescent Females, April Timmons

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Much of the research on sexuality during adolescence has focused on the potential negative sequelae of adolescent sexual behavior such as STI acquisition or teenage pregnancy. Researchers have begun to advocate for examining adolescent sexuality as a normative aspect of adolescent development. One aspect of this examination would be to form a more complete understanding of how adolescents develop their sexual identity – their conceptualization of themselves as a sexual being. Erickson’s (1968) identity development theory asserts that identity is developed internally and shaped by the social environment.

Development of a healthy sexual identity may be particularly difficult for African …

Examination Of Herpesvirus Entry Glycoprotein Interactions Using Proximity Biotinylation, Michelle Lajko Aug 2014

Examination Of Herpesvirus Entry Glycoprotein Interactions Using Proximity Biotinylation, Michelle Lajko

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Herpesvirus entry into cells begins when viral membrane glycoproteins bind to cellular receptors. This receptor binding elicits a cascade of interactions among conserved viral membrane glycoproteins that triggers virus-cell membrane fusion. Details of the viral protein interactions are not well understood because they are likely transient and/or low affinity. Proximity biotinylation (ProB) is a promising technique for dissecting the glycoprotein interactions required for entry. In ProB, one protein is linked to a bacterial biotin ligase and a second protein is linked to a target 15 amino acid acceptor peptide (AP). If the proteins interact, the ligase on the first protein …

The Effect Of Cyclophilin A On Vaccinia Virus Replication In Vitro, Kathryn Korhonen Aug 2014

The Effect Of Cyclophilin A On Vaccinia Virus Replication In Vitro, Kathryn Korhonen

Master's Theses

The host protein cyclophilin A (CypA) has been shown to be necessary for viral replication of several viruses, including human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus. Previous research done in the Geary laboratory, in collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, reported that cyclophilin A remains highly associated with vaccinia virus virions even after successive rounds of purification. The goal of this research is to further investigate how cyclophilin A affects vaccinia virus replication in vitro using primary tissues harvested from CypA (-/-) knockout mice to determine the difference in viral growth kinetics. Results showed different viral growth kinetics in …

Mother-Child Interactions And Emotion Regulation In Preschool Children, Courtney R. Lincoln Aug 2014

Mother-Child Interactions And Emotion Regulation In Preschool Children, Courtney R. Lincoln

Master's Theses

Emotion regulation is a complex and dynamic process that begins in infancy and continues through toddlerhood and childhood with the support of parents, teachers, and other caregivers. Early caregiver-child interactions shape the way children learn to manage their emotions and the range of emotions that they express. The current study seeks to examine how maternal perceptions of preschool children’s emotion regulation and emotion lability are associated with mother-child interactions during free play. 30 mother-child dyads were recruited from two New England urban areas: one community sample and one sample recruited from Head Start locations. Dyads engaged in a free play …

Reduction Of Obesity-Associated Oxidative Stress By Low-Fat Yogurt Consumption, Diana M. Dimarco Aug 2014

Reduction Of Obesity-Associated Oxidative Stress By Low-Fat Yogurt Consumption, Diana M. Dimarco

Master's Theses

Excess macronutrient intake leads to an increase in formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This causes an imbalance between ROS generation and the ability of the body to neutralize these radicals, a state known as oxidative stress. Previous research suggests the ability of dairy products to attenuate the postprandial response, which may reduce ROS formation. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the impact of low-fat yogurt consumption on fasting and postprandial oxidative stress in obese women.

We hypothesized that co-consumption of low-fat yogurt and a high-calorie, high-fat meal would reduce postprandial elevations in oxidative stress in obese women. To test …

Sensitivity Of Mri-Guided Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Clinical Breast Exam Data And Its Impact On Diagnostic Performance, Michael A. Mastanduno, Junqing Xu, Fadi El-Ghussein, Shudong Jiang, Hong Yin, Yan Zhao, Kelly E. Michaelson, Ke Wang, Fang Ren, Brian W. Pogue, Keith D. Paulsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

In this study, data from breast MRI-guided near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) exams delivered to 44 patients scheduled for surgical resection (ending in 16 benign and 28 malignant diagnoses) were analyzed using a spatial sensitivity metric to quantify the adequacy of the optical measurements for interrogating the tumor region of interest, as derived from the concurrent MRI scan. Along with positional sensitivity, the incorporation of spectral priors and the selection of an appropriate regularization parameter in the image reconstruction were considered, and found to influence the diagnostic accuracy of the recovered images. Once optimized, the MRI/NIRS data was able to differentiate …

Roles Of Retinoic Acid And Cyp26 Inhibitors In Ovarian Follicle Development, Shruti M. Kamath Aug 2014

Roles Of Retinoic Acid And Cyp26 Inhibitors In Ovarian Follicle Development, Shruti M. Kamath

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

The ovaries are the female reproductive organs that are located on either side of the uterus. They contain eggs and secrete hormones that are critical for female reproduction. Each follicle consists of an egg at the center, surrounded by multiple layers of somatic cells. These eggs undergo various stages of development wherein the follicular structure matures as a whole; the hormones and growth factors secreted by the somatic cells are essential for the maturation of the egg while the signaling molecules produced by the egg are crucial for somatic cell proliferation and follicle maturation and development.

Thus, mammalian ovarian follicle …

Tnf-Α And Mechanical Stretch: Synergistic Damage To Alveolar Epithelial Cells, Corey Garrett Holt Aug 2014

Tnf-Α And Mechanical Stretch: Synergistic Damage To Alveolar Epithelial Cells, Corey Garrett Holt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is difficult to treat and has a mortalitly rate of 40-60%. During ARDS, cytokine levels in the lungs are elevated and patients are treated with hyperoxia and mechanical ventilaion. Alone, these three factors can cause lung injury but the combination is thought to worsen lung damage. Using an over-distension model of lung injury, I investigated the effect of excessive mechanical stretch on a monolayer of murine alveolar epithelial cells (MLE-12) treated with the pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Results show that monolayer damage, i.e., formation of cell-free areas, may begin as early as 30 …

Neuroprotective Effect Of Heme Oxygenase-2 Knockout In The Blood Injection Model Of Intracerebral Hemorrhage., Jing Chen-Roetling, Ying Cai, Raymond F Regan

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The toxicity of heme breakdown products may contribute to the pathogenesis of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Heme catabolism is catalyzed by the heme oxygenase enzymes. We have previously reported that heme oxygenase-2 (HO-2), the constitutive isoform, protects neurons from hemin in vitro and reduces oxidative stress after striatal blood injection. In order to further evaluate HO-2 as a therapeutic target, we tested the hypothesis that HO-2 gene deletion protects neurons and attenuates behavioral deficits after ICH.

FINDINGS: Injection of 20 μl blood into the right striatum of HO-2 wild-type mice resulted in loss of approximately one third of striatal neurons …
