Remediation Of Feedlot Nutrients Runoff By Hydroponic Treatment And Electrolysis Process, Arjun Thapa Jan 2014

Remediation Of Feedlot Nutrients Runoff By Hydroponic Treatment And Electrolysis Process, Arjun Thapa

Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering

Intensive livestock farming in feedlot producing large amounts of manure and wastewater. Hydroponic and electrolysis treatments were studied for the remediation of nutrients from feedlot runoff. Water hyacinth, water lettuce, and sorghum were hydroponically grown in 10 L of feedlot runoff and Hoagland solution individually in plastic bucket in batches in a greenhouse. All three plants performed well in uptaking NH3-N (more than 90%) in feedlot runoff. From the feedlot runoff, TP reduction by sorghum, water hyacinth, and water lettuce ranged from 70% to 100% , 61% to 74%, and 49% to 93%, respectively. With electrolysis process, 500 mL of …

Identification Of The Root Causes Of Construction Accidents: Method-Related Causes, Venkata Siva Ganesh Chintalapudi Jan 2014

Identification Of The Root Causes Of Construction Accidents: Method-Related Causes, Venkata Siva Ganesh Chintalapudi

Construction Management and Engineering

Safety in construction is a problem that has been gaining increased attention in recent years. Although lots of research is being done to address different aspects of improving safety, the challenge remains in narrowing the focus by identifying specific problems. This study attempts to find problems in safety by collecting data from construction sites and performing an analysis. The data collection involved obtaining 205 incident investigation reports from a number of refinery and thermal power plant sites that belonged to the same contracting firm. Out of the 205 incidents, 120 were attributed to root causes that were method related. A …

Retail Change: A Look At The Past, Present, And Future, Laura Mckee Jan 2014

Retail Change: A Look At The Past, Present, And Future, Laura Mckee

Apparel Design and Hospitality Management

The retail industry has evolved over time and has had constant change. Retailers adjust to accommodate with the changes, and those that are able to change with the times are more likely to be successful. The history of retail has adjusted with each major development of technology, from trains, cars, internet, to tablet computers today. Consumer behavior has also adjusted to the changes in retail and technology. This paper looks at the early history of retail to where we are today. Retailers that want to remain relevant in the future must adapt with the changes in technology and consumer behavior. …

Baptizing Nazism: An Analysis Of The Religious Roots Of American Neo-Nazism, Alon Milwicki Jan 2014

Baptizing Nazism: An Analysis Of The Religious Roots Of American Neo-Nazism, Alon Milwicki

Journal of Hate Studies

The years following the Second World War saw American religious leaders making fervent attempts to bridge the denominational gap and encourage peaceful cooperation among America’s three leading faiths: Protestantism, Catholicism, and Judaism. While the religious revival movement was largely successful, it was not as complete as historians have previously suggested. Scholars of the postwar religious awakening have neglected the darker, conflictual, and even violent strains of religious revival which developed alongside the optimistic, cooperative, and harmonious efforts that have taken center stage. Simply put, the development and propagation of Christian Identity, as propelled by Dr. Wesley Albert Swift, provided a …

The patent regime is a quintessential notice system. Implicit in its design is the concept that one attempting to license a patent can identify those who hold the requisite rights and the territory that the patent holders claim. The modern system, however, bears little resemblance to the idealized form. In the last decade, an entire Hobbit’s world has been created under the foliage with little information available to inform the market. To address the problem, this Article suggests borrowing from doctrines related to disclosure in the realm of corporate securities, molding those doctrines to particular patent concerns. As a government …

Mainstreaming Critical Disability Studies Towards Undoing The Last Prejudice, Colleen Ann Mcdonald-Morken Jan 2014

Mainstreaming Critical Disability Studies Towards Undoing The Last Prejudice, Colleen Ann Mcdonald-Morken

Education

According to critical disability studies scholars, disablism may be the fundamental system of unearned advantaging and disadvantaging upon which all other notions of difference-as-deviance are constructed. If so, a deeply critical and intersectional investigation of enabled privilege/disablism prepares a grounding from which seeds of novel and effective approaches to social and educational justice may be cultivated. Whether or not disablism holds this pivotal position, the costs to us all in terms of personal, ethical, professional, and financial losses are too steep, have always been too steep. In this disquisition I begin by arguing for the prioritizing and centering of a …

Beautiful Boy Soldiers: Kaoru Shintani’S Area 88 And The Negotiation Of Japanese Postwar Masculinity, Luc Chinwongs Jan 2014

Beautiful Boy Soldiers: Kaoru Shintani’S Area 88 And The Negotiation Of Japanese Postwar Masculinity, Luc Chinwongs

English

This paper will examine the war manga Area 88 and its recent anime adaption. Area 88 depicts a fictional middle-eastern civil war in which a Japanese protagonist finds himself fighting as an unwilling mercenary. Area 88 is set in the cold war era, which, by necessity, must grapple with Japan’s political reality. As history professor Hiromi Mizuno explains, “…considering the strong connection that scholars and activists have found between masculinity and war, on the one hand, and femininity and peace, on the other, how postwar Japan’s masculinity has been negotiated with constitutional pacifism is an interesting and under-examined question” (105). …

A Faunal Survey Of Coleoptera, Hemiptera (Heteroptera), And Lepidoptera Associated With Fraxinus Pennsylvanica Marshall (Oleaceae) In The Red River Valley Of Eastern North Dakota, James Samuel Walker Jan 2014

A Faunal Survey Of Coleoptera, Hemiptera (Heteroptera), And Lepidoptera Associated With Fraxinus Pennsylvanica Marshall (Oleaceae) In The Red River Valley Of Eastern North Dakota, James Samuel Walker

Entomology

The emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis; EAB) is an invasive wood-boring beetle causing mortality of ash trees in North America. This project was initiated because of the threat of EAB moving into North Dakota. The main objective was to establish a baseline of insects associated with ash (Fraxinus) in the Red River Valley of North Dakota before EAB arrives. Taxonomic groups focused on include: Coleoptera, Hemiptera (Heteroptera), and Lepidoptera. Ten sites were surveyed regularly. Sites were chosen due to their ash content: nine sites contained green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica), and one site contained black ash (F. nigra). Surveying was performed …

Exploring Effects Of Weed Management In Agroecosystems: Arthropods, Soil Properties And Soybean Production, Ashton Anne Hansen Jan 2014

Exploring Effects Of Weed Management In Agroecosystems: Arthropods, Soil Properties And Soybean Production, Ashton Anne Hansen

Entomology

Soil-dwelling arthropods contribute to agroecosystems, but it’s unclear how specific taxa respond to weed management practices. Objectives were to explore 1) response of Collembola to weed management in a glyphosate-tolerant soybean system and 2) impacts of weed management and soil arthropod reduction (via insecticide) on soil and plant parameters. Weed management had variable effects on Collembola, whereas location had a consistent effect on diversity and density. Increased weed pressure decreased soil nitrate and reduced soybean yield. Reduction of soil arthropods didn’t impact soil nitrate or yield, but increased the number of soybean root nodules. This could be due to decreased …

The Girl, The Film, And The Wardrobe: A Study Of Texts, Tension, And Approachability In Punk Clothing And The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo, Gina Kruschek Jan 2014

The Girl, The Film, And The Wardrobe: A Study Of Texts, Tension, And Approachability In Punk Clothing And The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo, Gina Kruschek

English

The present study investigates how the modern re-authoring of Punk clothing styles through the character of Lisbeth Salander in Steig Larsson’s novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, its American film adaptation, and the subsequent H&M Dragon Tattoo collection works rhetorically within fiction and reality. A close reading of the novel and hybrid semiotic analysis of the film reveal a problematic characterization of Salander that overshadows the overwhelmingly positive response to her character from readers and viewers of the film. Conclusions from a rhetorical analysis of the original H&M press release and five articles that reported on the announcement, and …

Female Heroism And Leadership In The Anglo-Saxon Judith, Emily Bartz Jan 2014

Female Heroism And Leadership In The Anglo-Saxon Judith, Emily Bartz

English

In this paper, I argue that the Anglo-Saxon Judith frames its titular character’s simultaneous adoption of sacred femininity and masculine heroic violence as the acceptable and necessary response to despair in the face of invasion. Judith undergoes a radical gender transformation from a hyper-feminine saint to something altogether androgynous yet celebrated and thus embodies a complex form of female heroism and leadership. Furthermore, the poem reinforces Judith’s righteousness by contrasting her with King Holofernes, whose removal from power becomes an inevitable consequence of poor leadership and character. Finally, to justify Judith’s unusual status as a heroic warrior woman, the poet …

Writing (Dirty) New Media: Technorhetorical Opacity, Chimeras, And Dirty Ontology, Steven Reginald Hammer Jan 2014

Writing (Dirty) New Media: Technorhetorical Opacity, Chimeras, And Dirty Ontology, Steven Reginald Hammer

English

There is little doubt that emerging technologies are changing the way we act, interact, create, and consume. Yet despite increased access to these technologies, consumers of technology too seldom interrogate the politics, subjectivities, and limitations of these technologies and their interfaces. Instead, many consumers approach emerging technologies as objective tools to be consumed, and engage in creative processes uncritically. This disquisition, following the work of Hawisher, Selfe, and Selfe, seeks ways to approach the problem of a “rhetoric of technology” that uncritically praises new technologies by drawing on avant-garde art traditions and object-oriented ontology. I argue that, by following the …

Design And Analysis Of New Printed Wideband Antennas For Wireless Applications, Koby Asirvatham Jan 2014

Design And Analysis Of New Printed Wideband Antennas For Wireless Applications, Koby Asirvatham

Electrical and Computer Engineering

In this study a simple method to develop a wideband antenna is proposed. With this new technique a dipole antenna with a 48% frequency bandwidth is transformed to achieve a 120% frequency bandwidth for a voltage standing-wave ratio ≤ 2. Two different designs are tested and their performance is compared: the segmented-ring antenna and the split-ring antenna. Both antennas achieved a stable radiation pattern and a moderate gain. Nearly omnidirectional radiation patterns have been observed in both the XZ and YZ-planes. Finally, simple passive arrays are presented, demonstrating the usefulness of the split-ring antenna as an array element. Beam steering …

Two Models Of Unpatentable Subject Matter, Alan L. Durham Jan 2014

Two Models Of Unpatentable Subject Matter, Alan L. Durham

Articles

Patentable subject matter has become one of the most controversial areas of patent law Efforts to articulate a lucid and productive theory of patentable subject matter must acknowledge that there are two competing models of unpatentable subject matter One posits that natural laws natural phenomena and abstract ideas are themselves ineligible for patenting and that each example of a natural law natural phenomenon or abstract idea further defines a class of inventions that cannot be patented because they lack an additional element of ingenuity "” or "inventive concept" "” that sufficiently distinguishes those inventions from their natural counterparts This "penumbral" …

Untangling The Mystery Of Teaching Business Organizations, Susan Pace Hamill

Articles

Drawing on over 20 years of experience this article outlines my pedagogy for teaching Business Organizations To help students make sense out of what initially appears to be a disorganized mess I organize the course to loosely follow the historical evolution of business organizations I start with the general partnership the oldest form After explaining how and why corporate general laws evolved in the late 19th and early 20th centuries I transition to corporate law as it applies to big business I start with shareholders rights and then move to the fiduciary duties owed by the board of directors In …

The Religious Geography Of Town Of Greece V. Galloway, Paul Horwitz Jan 2014

The Religious Geography Of Town Of Greece V. Galloway, Paul Horwitz

Articles

Law and religion scholarship generally focuses on the temporal aspects of American religion and the law of the Religion Clauses not their spatial aspects This article argues that churchstate legal scholarship ought to take a spatial turn A substantial body of nonlegal scholarship has emphasized the influence of space and place on American religion and religious history The lens of geography observes a leading text provides an effective framework for analyzing the connection of religious belief to other spheres of thought and action at diverse scales Geography thus offers the potential for a richer understanding of American religious pluralism and …

The Federal Arbitration Act As Procedural Reform, Hiro Aragaki Jan 2014

The Federal Arbitration Act As Procedural Reform, Hiro Aragaki

Recent Supreme Court decisions such as American Express v. Italian Colors Restaurant, 133 S. Ct. 2304 (2013), and AT&T Mobility v. Concepcion, 131 S. Ct. 1740 (2011), represent dramatic developments with implications that extend far beyond the arbitration context. These decisions are a product of what the author refers to as the “contract model” of the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA). Heretofore largely unquestioned, the contract model posits the FAA’s original and dominant purpose as the promotion of private ordering in dispute resolution, as free as pos- sible from state regulation. The model has, in turn, helped courts and commenta- tors …

Mad Money: Rethinking Private Placements, Abraham Cable Jan 2014

Mad Money: Rethinking Private Placements, Abraham Cable

Faculty Scholarship

Currently, regulations try to limit unregistered sales of stock (private placements) to the “smart money,” either by informing investors through disclosure or excluding unsophisticated investors from the market. In theory, these smart-money approaches promote the dual goals of capital formation and investor protection. But in practice, regulators have struggled to craft effective disclosure or screening mechanisms. In light of these failures, this Article advocates for a new approach—investment caps that allow every investor a limited amount of “mad money” to invest in risky private placements. This mad-money approach can protect investors by encouraging basic diversification and liquidity, while advancing capital …
