Sedimentology Of Marine Vertebrate Burial In The Miocene Pisco Fm., Peru, Monte A. Fleming Sep 2014

Sedimentology Of Marine Vertebrate Burial In The Miocene Pisco Fm., Peru, Monte A. Fleming

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Miocene Pisco Basin of Peru is known for abundant, well-preserved marine vertebrate fossils (Esperante et al. 2000). Cetacean fossils are particularly abundant—so much so that we were able to locate 10 outcrops containing specimens in cross section, which allowed us to do detailed sedimentological studies of the beds surrounding the whales. We discovered that six of the 10 specimens were buried in channels; the details of the other four burials are too disparate to meaningfully group together in categories. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 describe and discuss the six specimens found in channels, while Appendix A contains descriptions and …

Cortical Mechanisms Of Human Pelvic Floor Muscle Synergies, Skulpan Asavasopon Sep 2014

Cortical Mechanisms Of Human Pelvic Floor Muscle Synergies, Skulpan Asavasopon

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The human pelvic floor is an anatomically, functionally, and morphologically complex region that is associated with many disorders such as chronic prostatitis/pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS), chronic low back pain, and urinary incontinence. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the cortical mechanisms that underlie human pelvic floor muscle synergies. Our first original experiment involved the study of 20 healthy male controls who were instructed to perform a variety of muscle tasks presumed to be associated with pelvic floor muscle synergies. Surface electromyography (EMG) method was used to detect timing onsets, as well as activation patterns of the pelvic floor, …

Examination Of Psychopathic Traits And Attention Using The Image Based Parity Task, Veronica Claudia Llamas Sep 2014

Examination Of Psychopathic Traits And Attention Using The Image Based Parity Task, Veronica Claudia Llamas

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Psychopathy has been defined as including deficits in affective, cognitive, and behavioral functioning. Due to the severity of these deficits, several etiological theories have emerged in an attempt to better understand the personality construct. The response modulation hypothesis (RMH; Patterson & Newman, 1993) is a theory growing in popularity among researchers and posits that an inability to reallocate attentional resources to peripheral information moderates the affective and behavioral deficits commonly documented within individuals with psychopathy. Thus, the present study attempted to examine to test the validity of the RMH in a non-incarcerated population. The results somewhat support the theory that …

Predicting Cognitive Decline In Older Adults, Kimberly M. Baerresen Sep 2014

Predicting Cognitive Decline In Older Adults, Kimberly M. Baerresen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The investigator sought to determine which neuropsychological tests are more likely to predict an individual’s cognitive decline (i.e., normal to mild cognitive impairment, mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s disease) two years prior to conversion. A sample of non-decliners (N=109) compared to those who declined (N=24) in cognitive status (i.e., mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease) with a mean age of 61.44 (SD=11.29) was examined. Results indicate the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test, Retention Trial (RCFT Retention; OR=0.93, p=0.005) is a significant predictor of conversion to MCI and the Buschke Delay (OR=0.54, p=0.017) is a significant predictor of conversion to AD. Due …

Nesting Ecology Of Hawksbill Sea Turtles (Eretmochelys Imbricata) On Utila, Honduras, Lindsey Renee Eggers Damazo Sep 2014

Nesting Ecology Of Hawksbill Sea Turtles (Eretmochelys Imbricata) On Utila, Honduras, Lindsey Renee Eggers Damazo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) has a circumtropical distribution and plays an important role in maintaining the health of coral reefs. Unfortunately, hawksbill populations have been decimated, and estimated numbers in the Caribbean are less than 10% of populations a century ago. The hawksbill is considered Critically Endangered, and researchers are coordinating worldwide efforts to protect this species. One country where we lack knowledge regarding hawksbills is Honduras. This study aimed to increase our understanding of hawksbill nesting ecology in Caribbean Honduras. Characteristics of hawksbill nesting activity and a nesting beach on the island of Utila were …

Baylisascaris Procyonis Prevalence And Impact In Raccoon (Procyon Lotor) Populations, Matthew Ingle Sep 2014

Baylisascaris Procyonis Prevalence And Impact In Raccoon (Procyon Lotor) Populations, Matthew Ingle

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Baylisascaris procyonis is a nematode parasite that infects the small intestines of raccoons (Procyon lotor). Raccoons are the definitive host for this parasite, which can have both an indirect and direct life cycle. In intermediate hosts, the parasite causes serious pathology resulting from larvae migrating through host tissue to the brain. Infection via exposure to B. procyonis eggs is fatal in over 90 vertebrate species that serve as intermediate hosts, including humans. The zoonotic potential of B. procyonis makes understanding factors that impact prevalence and pathology in raccoons important for management strategies. Alimentary canals from 226 raccoons trapped in nine …

Effects Of Cigarette Smoking On Neurocognitive Performance In Dementia Patients, Christina Mannino Sep 2014

Effects Of Cigarette Smoking On Neurocognitive Performance In Dementia Patients, Christina Mannino

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Dementia has become a serious problem worldwide due to the rapidly increasing incidence rate and the lack of effective treatments that cure or slow disease progression, and thus. prevention is crucial. Some studies suggests that cigarette smoking may increase the risk of developing dementia, but others suggest that smoking may have a neuroprotective effect. To clarify our understanding of the relationship between cigarette smoking and dementia, this study examined the effects of smoking on multiple cognitive domains via secondary data analysis of a sample consisting of 54% female subjects with an average age of 58±13 years. Measures of executive function, …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the presence of tooth structure on the accuracy in identifying the lamina dura surface, facial bone surface, facial and lingual bone margins, socket apex, as well as in facial bone thickness measurement. Materials & Methods: Three fresh cadaver heads were scanned using a NewTom 5G CBCT at 0.100 mm voxel size at three time-points: before extraction (T1), after extraction and reinsertion (T2), and after tooth removal …

Role Of Astrocyte Network In Edema After Juvenile Traumatic Brain Injury, Andrew Minoru Fukuda Sep 2014

Role Of Astrocyte Network In Edema After Juvenile Traumatic Brain Injury, Andrew Minoru Fukuda

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Juvenile traumatic brain injury (jTBI) is the leading cause of death and disability in young children and adolescents. Despite its lasting detrimental effects on the developing brain, no pharmacological treatment exists. One of the pathological hallmarks of jTBI is edema. Astrocytes play a key role in the edema process, and have been hypothesized that numerous astrocyte networks allow communication and propagation of edema and secondary injury spread. Two key astrocyte proteins are hypothesized to have a central role in the edema process: Aquaporin 4 (AQP4) and Connexin 43 (Cx43). AQP4 is expressed extensively in astrocyte endfeet, which surrounds the blood …

Changes In Emotion Drive Perceptual Level Shifts: Global Vs. Local Processing, Seda Terzyan Sep 2014

Changes In Emotion Drive Perceptual Level Shifts: Global Vs. Local Processing, Seda Terzyan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Different emotional states have been implicated in bringing about specific changes in attention, with positive emotions globalizing attention and negative emotions localizing attention (Fredrickson, 2004). Biases in attentional processes have been associated with the development and maintenance of emotional disorders, anxiety being the most common. Previous studies have shown that anxious individuals present with a bias toward negative information and more readily employ localized attentional processes (Macleod, 2002). This finding demonstrated a link between perceptual levels of attention with higher order conceptual attention, which in turn influences emotional states. Many researchers have explored this relationship, including Fredrickson (2004), who developed …

Effects Of Proton Radiation On Behavior In A Mouse Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, John A. Bellone Sep 2014

Effects Of Proton Radiation On Behavior In A Mouse Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, John A. Bellone

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Astronauts venturing outside Earth’s magnetosphere risk exposure to charged particle radiation that has been shown to cause neurological deficits in rodents via oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, altered neurogenesis, and synaptic changes. Since these responses are similar to those observed in age-related neurodegenerative diseases, we hypothesized that individuals with a propensity toward developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) would be more adversely affected by such exposure. To test this hypothesis, we exposed young double transgenic APP/PSEN1 mice (a commercially available strain engineered to develop AD-like neuropathology) and their wild-type (non-transgenic) counterparts to low doses of 150 MeV proton particle radiation and assessed the effects …

The Humanitarian And Developmental Impact Of Anti-Vehicle Mines, Gichd Sep 2014

The Humanitarian And Developmental Impact Of Anti-Vehicle Mines, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

Anti-vehicle mines (AVMs) have always had a humanitarian impact, but their significance has often been overshadowed by the higher-profile topic of anti-personnel mines (APMs), and thus the need to address AVMs has been neglected. In some countries, AVMs now present a greater threat to civilian populations than APMs, yet they are often viewed as a marginal issue in international fora. This publication seeks to depict the physical, social, economic and developmental impact of AVMs. AVMs are landmines designed to be triggered by vehicles rather than individual people. They can remain active for decades, and a number of them are difficult …

Música De Las Grullas: Una Historia Natural De Las Grullas De América, Paul A, Johnsgard, Enrique H. Weir, Karine Gil-Weir

Zea E-Books Collection

The Rising Terrorist Threat In Tanzania: Domestic Islamist Militancy And Regional Threats, Andre Lesage Sep 2014

The Rising Terrorist Threat In Tanzania: Domestic Islamist Militancy And Regional Threats, Andre Lesage

Strategic Forums

Despite its reputation for peace and stability in a troubled region, the East African country of Tanzania is experiencing a rising number of militant Islamist attacks that have targeted local Christian leaders and foreign tourists, as well as popular bars and restaurants. These attacks, which began in 2012, rarely make the headlines of international media. However, they should serve as a wake-up call for U.S. policymakers to increase short-term engagement with Tanzanian officials and support for Tanzanian security agencies to preempt the emergence of a more significant threat to U.S. and international interests in East Africa.
