Queering Masturbation In Lorde's Life And Writing, Eric Sipyinyu Njeng Sep 2014

Queering Masturbation In Lorde's Life And Writing, Eric Sipyinyu Njeng

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Queering Masturbation in Lorde's Life and Writing" Eric Sipyinyu Njeng discusses masturbation in Audre Lorde's life and works to signal an important aspect of her oeuvre often neglected in scholarship. Lorde stands out among prominent queer queens by demonstrating theory corporeally thereby going beyond mere theory and positing her body as a space of complex sexual passions. When Judith Butler speaks of gender as performative rather than embodied, Lorde theorizes and foregrounds this in her works and self and celebrates a sexual matrix that ranges from heterosexuality to homosexuality to auto-sexuality. Lorde places masturbation between the binary …

Greenberg's Prose And Poetry About World War I, Chanita Goodblatt Sep 2014

Greenberg's Prose And Poetry About World War I, Chanita Goodblatt

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Greenberg's Prose and Poetry about World War I" Chanita Goodblatt analyzes the literary response of Uri Zvi Greenberg to the war. His volume of poetry Krieg oyf der Erd— largely untranslated to English — can be read as part of a multicultural literary response to World War I, particularly in juxtaposition with the poems of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. Goodblatt posits that a study of shared esthetic strategies and literary traditions underlines the way in which Greenberg created an "alienated wanderer" who witnesses and stands helpless in the face of the violence and destruction of …

Biophysical Mechanisms Of Early Heart Morphogenesis, Yunfei Shi Sep 2014

Biophysical Mechanisms Of Early Heart Morphogenesis, Yunfei Shi

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The heart is the first functioning organ in the developing embryo. Initially, the heart is a relatively straight tube created by folding and fusion of the cardiogenic fields, which lie bilaterally within the blastoderm. Shortly after formation, the primitive heart tube (HT) undergoes the morphogenetic process of c-looping as it bends and twists into a c-shaped tube. All these transformations require physical forces, which remain poorly understood.

The aim of this dissertation is to elucidate some of the biophysical mechanisms that create and shape the early HT. Our work involves a combination of ex ovo experiments and computational modeling. Experiments …

Downhill Treadmill Running Does Not Induce Muscle Damage In Fvb Mice, Brenda Benson Sep 2014

Downhill Treadmill Running Does Not Induce Muscle Damage In Fvb Mice, Brenda Benson

Theses and Dissertations

Downhill treadmill running is a commonly used method to cause exercise-induced muscle damage, especially in rodents. Previous studies have evaluated which muscles in rats are more prone to damage. However research using downhill run mice (DHR) has shown some inconsistencies in which muscle is best analyzed for damage. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to quantify the damage in various muscles in a mouse after a single bout of DHR. Methods: Male FVB mice (5 months) were injected with Evans Blue dye (EBD) and then either used as control (CON) or run downhill (-16°) at 20 meters per minute …

Vaccination With A Genetically Modified Brugia Malayi Cysteine Protease Inhibitor-2 Reduces Adult Parasite Numbers And Affects The Fertility Of Female Worms Following A Subcutaneous Challenge Of Mongolian Gerbils (Meriones Unguiculatus) With B. Malayi Infective Larvae., Sridhar Arumugam, Junfei Wei, Danielle Ward, David Abraham, Sara Lustigman, Bin Zhan, Thomas R. Klei

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Vaccination of Mongolian gerbils with Brugia malayi cysteine protease inhibitor-2 in which the amino acid Asn66 was mutated to Lys66 (Bm-CPI-2M) resulted in reduced parasite numbers of 48.6% and 48.0% at 42 and 90 days p.i. with B. malayi L3s. Fertility of female worms was also affected at 90 days p.i. In vitro killing of L3s observed in the presence of gerbil peritoneal exudate cells and anti-Bm-CPI-2M sera suggests antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity as a putative protective mechanism. These observations suggest that Bm-CPI-2M is a promising prophylactic and anti-fecundity vaccine candidate.

Mir-103a-3p Targets The 5' Utr Of Gprc5a In Pancreatic Cells., Honglei Zhou, Isidore Rigoutsos

Computational Medicine Center Faculty Papers

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short noncoding RNAs that regulate the expression of their targets in a sequence-dependent manner. For protein-coding transcripts, miRNAs regulate expression levels through binding sites in either the 3' untranslated region (3' UTR) or the amino acid coding sequence (CDS) of the targeted messenger RNA (mRNA). Currently, for the 5' untranslated region (5' UTR) of mRNAs, very few naturally occurring examples exist whereby the targeting miRNA down-regulates the expression of the corresponding mRNA in a seed-dependent manner. Here we describe and characterize two miR-103a-3p target sites in the 5' UTR of GPRC5A, a gene that acts as a …

Snf1 Mediated Phosphorylation And Activation Of Pas Kinase, Bryan D. Badal Sep 2014

Snf1 Mediated Phosphorylation And Activation Of Pas Kinase, Bryan D. Badal

Theses and Dissertations

Nutrient sensing kinases sense available nutrients and regulate cell activity accordingly. Three of these enzymes are AMP regulated kinase (AMPK, or Snf1 in yeast), PAS kinase, and target of rapamycin (TOR), are conserved from yeast to man and have overlapping function. AMPK and Snf1 are important in sensing when nutrient status in the cell is low and down regulating energy consuming pathways. PAS kinase is required for glucose homeostasis in the cell, and responds to glucose levels. TOR senses nutrients such as amino acids and upregulates cell growth pathways primarily through protein synthesis. Due to the varying nature of these …

“We Are Not Free”: The Meaning Of (Freedom) In American Indian Resistance To President Johnson’S War On Poverty, Casey Ryan Kelly Sep 2014

“We Are Not Free”: The Meaning Of (Freedom) In American Indian Resistance To President Johnson’S War On Poverty, Casey Ryan Kelly

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This essay examines how the ideograph was crafted through dialectical struggles between Euro-Americans and American Indians over federal Indian policy between 1964 and 1968. For policymakers, was historically sutured to the belief that assimilation was the only pathway to American Indian liberation. I explore the American Indian youth movement’s response to President Johnson’s War on Poverty to demonstrate how activists rhetorically realigned in Indian policy with the Great Society’s rhetoric of “community empowerment.” I illustrate how American Indians orchestrated counterhegemonic resistance by reframing the “Great Society” as an argument for a “Greater Indian American.” This analysis evinces the rhetorical significance …

Implementation And Validation Of Aortic Remodeling In Hypertensive Rats, Shijia Zhao, Linxia Gu Sep 2014

Implementation And Validation Of Aortic Remodeling In Hypertensive Rats, Shijia Zhao, Linxia Gu

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

A computational framework was implemented and validated to better understand the hypertensive artery remodeling in both geometric dimensions and material properties. Integrating the stress-modulated remodeling equations into commercial finite element codes allows a better control and visualization of local mechanical parameters. Both arterial thickening and stiffening effects were captured and visualized. An adaptive material remodeling strategy combined with the element birth and death techniques for the geometrical growth were implemented. The numerically predicted remodeling results in terms of the wall thickness, inner diameter, and the ratio of elastin to collagen content of the artery were compared with and fine-tuned by …

The Trehalose Pathway In Maize: Conservation And Gene Regulation In Response To The Diurnal Cycle And Extended Darkness, Clémence Henry, Samuel W. Bledsoe, Allison Siekman, Alec Kollman, Brian M. Waters, Regina Feil, Mark Stitt, L. Mark Lagrimini Sep 2014

The Trehalose Pathway In Maize: Conservation And Gene Regulation In Response To The Diurnal Cycle And Extended Darkness, Clémence Henry, Samuel W. Bledsoe, Allison Siekman, Alec Kollman, Brian M. Waters, Regina Feil, Mark Stitt, L. Mark Lagrimini

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Energy resources in plants are managed in continuously changing environments, such as changes occurring during the day/night cycle. Shading is an environmental disruption that decreases photosynthesis, compromises energy status, and impacts on crop productivity. The trehalose pathway plays a central but not well-defined role in maintaining energy balance. Here, we characterized the maize trehalose pathway genes and deciphered the impacts of the diurnal cycle and disruption of the day/night cycle on trehalose pathway gene expression and sugar metabolism. The maize genome encodes 14 trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (TPS) genes, 11 trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP) genes, and one trehalase gene. Transcript abundance of most …

Use Of Cysteine-Reactive Crosslinkers To Probe Conformational Flexibility Of Human Dj-1 Demonstrates That Glu18 Mutations Are Dimers, Janani Prahlad, David N. Hauser, Nicole M. Milkovic, Mark R. Cookson, Mark A. Wilson Sep 2014

Use Of Cysteine-Reactive Crosslinkers To Probe Conformational Flexibility Of Human Dj-1 Demonstrates That Glu18 Mutations Are Dimers, Janani Prahlad, David N. Hauser, Nicole M. Milkovic, Mark R. Cookson, Mark A. Wilson

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The oxidation of a key cysteine residue (Cys106) in the parkinsonism-associated protein DJ-1 regulates its ability to protect against oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage. Cys106 interacts with a neighboring protonated Glu18 residue, stabilizing the Cys106-SO2 − (sulfinic acid) form of DJ-1. To study this important post-translational modification, we previously designed several Glu18 mutations (E18N, E18D, E18Q) that alter the oxidative propensity of Cys106. However, recent results suggest these Glu18 mutations cause loss of DJ-1 dimerization, which would severely compromise the protein’s function. The purpose of this study was to conclusively determine the oligomerization state of these mutants using X-ray …

Virus-Host Mucosal Interactions During Early Siv Rectal Transmission, Wuxun Lu, Fangrui Ma, Alexander Churbanov, Yanmin Wan, Yue Li, Guobin Kang, Zhe Yuan, Dong Wang, Chi Zhang, Jianqing Xu, Mark Lewis, Qingsheng Li

Nebraska Center for Biotechnology: Faculty and Staff Publications

To deepen our understanding of early rectal transmission of HIV-1, we studied virus-host interactions in the rectal mucosa using simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-Indian rhesus macaque model and mRNA deep sequencing. We found that rectal mucosa actively responded to SIV as early as 3 days post-rectal inoculation (dpi) and mobilized more robust responses at 6 and 10 dpi. Our results suggests that the failure of the host to contain virus replication at the portal of entry is attributable to both a high-level expression of lymphocyte chemoattractant, proinflammatory and immune activation genes, which can recruit and activate viral susceptible target cells into …
