Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

Cotton stalk bark fibers (CSBF) were extracted by steam flash explosion, completed within 0.09 s, and the extracted fibers were compared with those obtained by conventional alkaline treatment. Results indicate that the optimum steam pressure was 2.5 MP a when steaming time was set to 2 min for extracting CSBF. Under the optimized conditions, the obtained CBSF had a cellulose content of 72%, length of 48 mm, fineness of 45 dtex, crystallinity index of 68, moisture regain of 8%, water rention of 98%, and tensile strength of 2.4 cN/dtex, which were similar to results obtained by conventional alkaline treatment. Compared …

Stable Isotopes In Fish Eye Lenses As Potential Recorders Of Trophic And Geographic History, Amy A. Wallace, David J. Hollander, Ernst B. Peebles Oct 2014

Stable Isotopes In Fish Eye Lenses As Potential Recorders Of Trophic And Geographic History, Amy A. Wallace, David J. Hollander, Ernst B. Peebles

Marine Science Faculty Publications

We evaluated eye lenses as potential recorders of stable isotope histories in fish because they consist of metabolically inert optical proteins that are deposited in successive, concentric circles (laminae) much like otolith circuli and tree rings. We conducted four different tests on lenses from red snapper, red grouper, gag, and white grunt. The first test was a low-resolution screening of multiple individuals (4–5 radial groups of laminae per lens, all species except white grunt). Along the radial axis, all individuals exhibited substantial isotopic variability. Red snapper individuals separated into two groups based on δ15N and gag separated into …

Diversity In Human Behavioral Ecology, Raymond B. Hames Oct 2014

Diversity In Human Behavioral Ecology, Raymond B. Hames

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

As befitting an evolutionary approach to the study of human behavior, the papers in this special issue of Human Nature cover a diversity of topics in modern and traditional societies. They include the goals of hunting in foraging societies, social bias, cooperative breeding, the impact of war on women, leadership, and social mobility. In combination these contributions demonstrate the utility of selectionist’s thinking on a wide variety of topics. While many of the contributions employ standard evolutionary biological approaches such as kin selection, cooperative breeding and the Trivers- Willard model, others examine important human issues such as the problems of …

“Much Dispute And Wonderful Contentions”: Modern First Amendment Values In The Book Of Mormon, Edward L. Carter

Faculty Publications

The First Amendment’s free speech clause, like the religious exercise clause, is profoundly counter-majoritarian. So the fact that a religious point of view is unpopular or out of step with a majority of society is not justification to suppress its expression. Rather, the unpopularity of religious views is the very reason why religious expression should be protected from government or private censorship. Free speech, including religious expression, strengthens and stabilizes society, enables the search for truth, provides a check on government power, facilitates self-governance and fosters autonomy. The Book of Mormon teaches Mormons to respect the contributions of free expression …

Harry Theobald, formerly called Ulderico Theobaldi, entered the kingdom of God today at 11:02 a.m. having lived his life with all the vigor he possessed. At age 76, he died of leukemia at the Golden Hills Nursing Home, leaving three children and three granddaughters the deed to his warm spirit. Included in his will was a document citing three basic inheritances--faith, hope, and love--to be practiced with positive consideration and serious contemplation in his remembrance.

"Come on son, today's the day we find the perfect piece of wood, strong, yet easy to carve--come on."

Scott refocused his eyes on his father who stood over his bed.

"Come on son, let's go."

The brown haired blur moved again, and Scott, full of expectation, dressed quickly and hurried to the door.

Design Tough And Resilient Hydrogels For Artificial Cartilage And Heart Valve, Xuanhe Zhao Oct 2014

Design Tough And Resilient Hydrogels For Artificial Cartilage And Heart Valve, Xuanhe Zhao

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

As swollen polymer networks in water, hydrogels are usually brittle. However, hydrogels with high toughness play critical roles in many plant and animal tissues as well as in diverse applications such as tissue regeneration. Here, we demonstrate that the general principle for the design of tough hydrogels is to implement mechanisms to dissipate substantial mechanical energy but still maintain high elasticity of hydrogels. A matrix that combines various mechanisms is constructed for the first time to guide the design of next-generation tough hydrogels. We highlight that a particularly promising strategy for the design is to implement multiple mechanisms across multiple …

High Hops On Sand Influenced By Added Mass Effects, Jeffrey Aguilar, Daniel I Goldman Oct 2014

High Hops On Sand Influenced By Added Mass Effects, Jeffrey Aguilar, Daniel I Goldman

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

Various animals exhibit locomotive behaviors (like sprinting and hopping) involving transient bursts of actuation coupled to the ground through internal elastic elements. The performance of such maneuvers is subject to reaction forces on the feet from the environment. On substrates like dry granular media, the laws that govern these forces are not fully understood and can vary with foot size and shape, material compaction (measured by the volume fraction, f ) and kinematics of intrusion. To gain insight into how such interactions affect jumping on granular media, we study the performance of a self-actuated spring mass robot with a 7.62-cm …

Multiscale Molecular Simulation Of Membranes, Amin Aghaei, Kaushik Dayal Oct 2014

Multiscale Molecular Simulation Of Membranes, Amin Aghaei, Kaushik Dayal

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

Fundamental advances in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms enable a guided strategy towards analysis, modeling, and design of nanoscale structures. An essential difficulty in molecular modeling is that relevant system sizes of interest are very large. Although molecular mechanics has developed accurate models of interactions between individual molecules, the difficulty is that it is simply infeasible to solve these models on existing – or even conceived – computers. Although accurate models of the individual interactions between the molecules are available, the engineered materials typically consist of well over a billion such molecules. However, multiscale methods are well-suited to such …

Stiffness Response Of Bone To Elevated Frequency Loading, Rebecca Chung, Arthur Ritter, Antonio Valdevit Oct 2014

Stiffness Response Of Bone To Elevated Frequency Loading, Rebecca Chung, Arthur Ritter, Antonio Valdevit

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

Introduction: Wolff’s Law qualitatively describes the response of bone to loading conditions. This study examines the interaction and dependence of loading frequency on the fatigue response of bone under axial load. It has been surmised that exposure to elevated frequencies may increase bone stiffness. The resulting stiffness response of bone based on work generated under sinusoidal loading over a range of frequencies was investigated. -Elucidating the response characteristics of bone will help to determine the optimal loading conditions which stimulate bone growth and may be applicable to the improvement of bone fusion regimens as well as design of bioreactor systems. …

Crack Propagation In Bone On The Scale Of Mineralized Collagen Fibrils: Role Of Polymers With Sacrificial Bonds And Hidden Length, Ahmed Elbanna, Wenyi Wang Oct 2014

Crack Propagation In Bone On The Scale Of Mineralized Collagen Fibrils: Role Of Polymers With Sacrificial Bonds And Hidden Length, Ahmed Elbanna, Wenyi Wang

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

Jang and Kim [1] and Boyle and Kim [2] have already shown that the trabecular structure of human proximal femur can be closely approximated through topology optimization. In similar fashion, we employed a topology optimization scheme to create the trabecular structure in human vertebrae. We also expanded the scope to include animals in which the normal posture places the spine in the horizontal position, dramatically altering the load pattern. Thus, we were able to examine the effects of differing load conditions on the trabecular structure.

Potential Within: Topology Optimization Of The Spine, Ahmed Elbanna, Darin Peetz Oct 2014

Potential Within: Topology Optimization Of The Spine, Ahmed Elbanna, Darin Peetz

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

As scientists and engineers continually seek to optimize systems and structures, biology has become an increasingly popular source of inspiration. Many common algorithms for optimization are based on natural phenomenon; therefore, it is only logical to assume that many natural structures are already optimally designed. In fact, Wolff’s law states that the trabecular structure of our own bones is a self-optimizing structure. This presentation explores that theory in relation to the vertebrae found in humans and animals alike.

Angiotensin II (Ang II) stimulates water and saline intakes when injected into the brain of rats. This arises from activation of the AT1 Ang II receptor subtype. Acute repeated injections, however, decrease the water intake response to Ang II without affecting saline intake. Previous studies provide evidence that Ang II-induced water intake is mediated via the classical G protein coupling pathway, whereas the saline intake caused by Ang II is mediated by an ERK 1/2 MAP kinase signaling pathway. Accordingly, the different behavioral response to repeated injections of Ang II may reflect a selective effect on G protein coupling. To …
