Contribution Of Hyaluronan Degradation On The Structure Of Lungs: Development Of Experimental Techniques, Adetoun Opetola Komolafe
Contribution Of Hyaluronan Degradation On The Structure Of Lungs: Development Of Experimental Techniques, Adetoun Opetola Komolafe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Acute respiratory distress syndrome patients are usually administered high levels of oxygen and then mechanical ventilation. The combination of these is thought to cause worse lung injury than either alone through biophysical mechanisms partly involving overdistension. The basis of this thesis is that injury may be associated with degradation of hyaluronan, a key component of the exracellular matrix having compressive resistance. Although hyaluronan is known to degrade directly by reactive oxygen species or by hyaluronidase, it is possible to measure the contribution of hyaluronan degradation in lung structure. Molecular weight measurements were used to confirm hyaluronan degradation, while nano indentation …

Marian Piety And Modernity: The Perpetual Help Devotion As Popular Religion In The Philippines, Manuel Victor Sapitula
Marian Piety And Modernity: The Perpetual Help Devotion As Popular Religion In The Philippines, Manuel Victor Sapitula
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle argues that Marian piety in the form of the Perpetual Help Devotion exemplifies “modern popular religion,” which has grown through mechanisms of strategic accommodation and creative refashioning in response to urban transitions in Metropolitan Manila and the ecclesiastical elites’ regulation of piety. Differences between religious authorities and devotees have produced diversified devotional practices, which retain their relevance due to an ethic of self-care that enables devotees to craft identities and self-understandings in the modern context. Rather than a threat, modernity provides opportunity structures and resources that enable religious beliefs and practices to respond to the exigencies of modernity.KEYWORDS: Popular …

Urban Religious Change At The Neoliberal Frontier: Notes Toward A Spatial Analysis Of A Contemporary Filipino Vernacular Catholicism, Paul-François Tremlett
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle sketches a theoretical point of departure for a spatial analysisof a contemporary Filipino vernacular Catholicism. Based on materialsfrom religious studies, the sociology of religion, and ethnographic andhistorical materials, it focuses on the new neoliberal spatial dynamicsof Manila and the extent to which recent shifts in its spatial constitutionmight be correlated with shifts in the sites and occasions of contemporaryCatholicism, and in particular with the emergence of El Shaddai. It asks: Ifincreasingly the neoliberal city is eviscerated of public and civic spaces, canEl Shaddai serve to revitalize and reenchant the city?KEYWORDS: Filipino Catholicism • Religious Change • Neoliberalism • Spatial …

Suppression Of Osteoarthritis Via Molecular Engineering Of An Aggrecan Mimetic, Alyssa Panitch, Craig Goergen, Nelad Vazquez-Portalatin, Corey Neu, Paul Snyder, Shaili Sharma, Gert Breur
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
Osteoarthritis (OA) progresses via a feed-forward cycle in which inflammation leads to the up-regulation of catabolic enzymes that cleave the extracellular matrix (ECM) components. Fragments of ECM molecules hyaluronic acid and collagen type II further stimulate inflammation. The degradation of aggrecan is a critical early event in OA due to aggrecan’s ability to protect other ECM components from degradation and support the compressive strength of cartilage. Characterized herein is an aggrecan mimic’s (mAGC) ability to replace the functions of native aggrecan and halt the progression of OA. We examine mAGC in both ex vivo cartilage tissue models and in vivo …

Mechanics Of Bioinspired Flexible Composites: Experiments, -Simulations, And Analytical Solutions, Stephan Rudykh, Mary Boyce
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
Motivated by designing bioinspired flexible armor, we study deformable layered materials reminiscent of the structures present on teleost fish species (e.g., zebrafish Danio rerio and Arapaima gigas) [1]. These materials comprise soft matrix and stiff layers. The overlapping stiff scales are embedded in a soft tissue such that the composite material can provide protection while also undergoing large deformations when subjected to a penetrating loading (such as a bullet, knife, or a powerful animal bite). Moreover, the layered materials hold a great potential for a large variety of applications including noise reduction [2] and actuation [3]. Here, we analyze the …
Cells As Strain-Cued Automata, Brian Cox
Cells As Strain-Cued Automata, Brian Cox
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
We argue in favor of representing living cells as automata and demonstrate that cells behaving as automata can form patterns by responding to local variations in the strain fields that arise due to their individual or collective motions. A cell’s response to strain stimuli is assumed to be effected by internally generated, internally powered forces. The forces are a response to the stimulus of external strain conditions, but generally move the cell in directions other than those implied by external energy gradients, including any stresses associated with the stimulating strain fields. Estimates of the time rates of change of elastic …
Historical Vegetation Of Three Salmon-Bearing Watersheds In The Interior Columbia River Basin, Tyanna Smith
Historical Vegetation Of Three Salmon-Bearing Watersheds In The Interior Columbia River Basin, Tyanna Smith
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
Land use practices can be a contributing factor to environmental degradation and have been the focus of many ecological studies. One aspect that is less addressed is land use history and the effects that past practices, such as logging and grazing, can have on the current landscape. This paper describes research and the synthesis of material on the environmental history and watershed characteristics for three watersheds located within spawning and rearing areas for Chinook salmon in the Grande Ronde River Basin in Northeast Oregon: upper Grande Ronde River, Catherine Creek, and Minam River. The Grande Ronde Basin is critical spawning …

Blood-Suckers! The Concepts Revisionist And Anti-Revisionist Mythology Introduced By The Vampire- And Werewolf-Tetralogy Underworld (2003-2012), Stefan L. Arvidsson
Journal of Religion & Film
By undertaking a structuralist influenced analysis of the vampire- and werewolf-tetralogy Underworld the author argues for the usefulness of the concept “revisionist mythology” and “anti-revisionist mythology” in the study of the history of religion in general and in the study of popular mythology in specific. These concepts point to dramaturgical, but also ethical and ideological, changes within the world of commercial pop-mythological artefacts. The article focuses on certain aesthetic aspects of the tetralogy that unveil counter-cultural traits that might be labelled socialist. The article ends with speculations about the causes for the strong revisionistic and anti-revisionistic trends that are taking …
Islam In Turkish Cinema, Bilal Yorulmaz, William L. Blizek
Islam In Turkish Cinema, Bilal Yorulmaz, William L. Blizek
Journal of Religion & Film
This essay describes the history of Turkish cinema from its origins in 1896 until the present, focusing upon how Islam and religious Muslims are portrayed in the movies. For historical, political, and cultural reasons, Islam and religious Muslims have often been portrayed in a negative light, even though Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country. Present day Turkish cinema offers a more eclectic array of movies, including movies that show Islamic practices in daily life and movies that portray Islam in a favorable light.
The Failure Of A Pseudo-Christian Community In A Nation-State In Crisis: 28 Days Later, Karl E. Martin
The Failure Of A Pseudo-Christian Community In A Nation-State In Crisis: 28 Days Later, Karl E. Martin
Journal of Religion & Film
This essay argues that the central group of survivors of the Rage plague in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later (2002) constitutes a nascent Christian community. This community is formed when the four survivors band together around a common commitment to protect the most vulnerable among them. However, this community fails to provide an alternative to the nation-state because, in its search for protection, it flees into the arms of the nation-state and chooses to answer the violence of the nation-state with violence of its own in order to survive. Christian faith and practice exist in the film only under the …

The Role Of Reusable Learning Objects In Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Education, Bryan M. Gee, Jane Strickland, Lisa Salazar
The Role Of Reusable Learning Objects In Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Education, Bryan M. Gee, Jane Strickland, Lisa Salazar
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Out of early research, Cisco Systems (1999) have built an impressive foundation that advocates for reusable learning objects (RLOs). As the need for online methods for delivering both formal and informal educational content has increased, the prospect of greater influence through carefully constructed RLOs has grown. RLOs are any digital resource that can be used and reused to enhance online learning. RLOs typically are small, discrete, self-contained digital objects that may be sequenced, combined, and used within a variety of instructional activities. RLOs have been implemented in nursing, pharmacy, and physician assistant programs. However, there is a lack of literature …

“Putting The Occupation Back In Occupational Therapy:” A Survey Of Occupational Therapy Practitioners’ Use Of Gardening As An Intervention, Amy Wagenfeld, Ben Atchison
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background. This study examines how and why occupational therapy practitioners across practice areas use gardening as an intervention. Respondents’ interpretation of the best and least desirable aspects of their facility’s garden and whether they contributed to its design was also examined.
Method. A description and link to a 15-question online survey about gardening as an occupational therapy intervention was emailed to Western Michigan University Occupational Therapy alumni and posted on four OT Connections groups and the AOTA LinkedIn site.
Results. Gardening as an occupational therapy intervention is meaningful and purposeful (93.66%, n = 56), motivating (80%, n = 48), fun …

Climate change has become an important yet politically divisive topic in recent years. Further complicating the issue are assertions that climate change– related public opinion surveys used by social scientists are biased or otherwise problematic. We conducted a pilot study to explore questions concerning bias and interpretation of climate change surveys. Our study sample was composed of adult residents of Nebraska (n = 115). We augmented our survey findings with cognitive interviews of a subsample of respondents (n = 20). We assessed study participants’ attitudes about climate change, and perceptions of bias and interpretation of survey questions drawn from previously …
