Integrin Interaction Inhibitors For The Treatment Of Cancer, Lori Hazlehurst, Mark Mclaughlin, Priyesh Jain, William S. Dalton

USF Patents

Integrin interaction inhibitors using a beta-turn promoter are described herein. These peptides are useful in treating cancer, such as multiple myeloma, by administering a therapeutically effective amount of the integrin interaction inhibitor. Data show that integrin interaction inhibitors act synergistically or additively interact with anti-proliferative agents such as doxorubicin, SAHA, arsenic trioxide, and etoposide.

Collapse Of An Ecological Network In Ancient Egypt, Justin Yeakel, Mathias Pires, Lars Rudolf, Nathaniel Dominy Oct 2014

Collapse Of An Ecological Network In Ancient Egypt, Justin Yeakel, Mathias Pires, Lars Rudolf, Nathaniel Dominy

Dartmouth Scholarship

The dynamics of ecosystem collapse are fundamental to determining how and why biological communities change through time, as well as the potential effects of extinctions on ecosystems. Here, we integrate depictions of mammals from Egyptian antiquity with direct lines of paleontological and archeological evidence to infer local extinctions and community dynamics over a 6,000-y span. The unprecedented temporal resolution of this dataset enables examination of how the tandem effects of human population growth and climate change can disrupt mammalian communities. We show that the extinctions of mammals in Egypt were nonrandom and that destabilizing changes in community composition coincided with …

Reduction Vs. Expansion: The Conflicting Projects Of Kenneth Burke And Michel Foucault, Michael David Measel Oct 2014

Reduction Vs. Expansion: The Conflicting Projects Of Kenneth Burke And Michel Foucault, Michael David Measel

Theses and Dissertations

This project is an intertextual study of the theoretical projects of Kenneth Burke and Michel Foucault. It outlines their relationship in terms of points of cohesion and points of departure in their works. The similarities and differences between the projects of Burke and Foucault is described in terms of the relationship between language, knowledge, power, and society, then described in terms of the dichotomy of Reduction and Expansion. This dichotomy gives us a starting point from which to outline the commonalities and differences between these authors' projects. It also gives us a tool for other types of investigations concerning language …

Zoie Coleman And Annette Overstreet, Wilmer Amina Carter Foundation

Bridges Digital Archive: Audio and Video Recordings

Hania Mubashir interviews Zoie Coleman and Annette Overstreet, women with a deep history in San Bernardino. The audio recording starts with an explanation of the women moving from Pasadena to San Bernardino in 1949. When moving, they noticed the major difference between both cities is that San Bernardino had no sidewalks, electricity, or inside toilets. The women also mentioned that they grew up in the Valley Truck Farm area, where their father grew crops such as black-eyed peas, corn, boysenberries, tomatoes, okra, greens, and turnips. Mubashir then asked about expectations that the women had from their family, which came back …

Causes And Consequences Of Chinese Privet (Ligustrum Sinense Lour.) Invasion In Hydrologically Altered Forested Wetlands, Meghan Beth Foard Oct 2014

Causes And Consequences Of Chinese Privet (Ligustrum Sinense Lour.) Invasion In Hydrologically Altered Forested Wetlands, Meghan Beth Foard

Student Theses and Dissertations

What drives invasive species success? My research consists of four studies aiming to answer this question for Ligustrum sinense. The four projects are: (1) Synthesis of invasion literature within passenger-driver-backseat driver frameworks; (2) hydrochory investigation of water as a dispersal mechanism for invasion; (3) ecohydrology investigation of inundation effects on seed viability of L. sinense; (4) dendrochronology study of the effects of stream channelization and L. sinense invasion on bottomland oak tree growth. Results suggest that L. sinense initially invaded habitats that were hydrologically altered, resulting in drier conditions and a "novel niche." Dispersal via hydrochory allowed L. sinense to …

The Legacy Of Alexander Bain, Stephen Lindsay Satterfield Oct 2014

The Legacy Of Alexander Bain, Stephen Lindsay Satterfield

Theses and Dissertations

Alexander Bain's key works are reviewed once again from a rhetorical and historical perspective. Bain was a Scottish empiricist who lived during the Industrial Revolution and contributed to rhetoric, psychology, education, and logic. Bain's emphasis on contiguity, modes of discourse, and grammar are explained. A brief Bain biography is provided along with Bain's interactions with notable friends. Researching Bain again from an interdisciplinary perspective is undertaken to avoid the usual problems with simply repeating prior academic findings and set opinions. However, the way in which Bain was accepted and then discredited is also discussed.

Fluid circulation in the Earth's crust plays an essential role in surface, near surface, and deep crustal processes. Flow pathways are driven by hydraulic gradients but controlled by material permeability, which varies over many orders of magnitude and changes over time. Although millions of measurements of crustal properties have been made, including geophysical imaging and borehole tests, this vast amount of data and information has not been integrated into a comprehensive knowledge system. A community data infrastructure is needed to improve data access, enable large‐scale synthetic analyses, and support representations of the subsurface in Earth system models. Here, we describe …

Institute for Immunology and Informatics Faculty Publications

Despite years of research, vaccines against HIV and HCV are not yet available, due largely to effective viral immunoevasive mechanisms. A novel escape mechanism observed in viruses that cause chronic infection is suppression of viral-specific effector CD4+ and CD8+ T cells by stimulating regulatory T cells (Tregs) educated on host sequences during tolerance induction. Viral class II MHC epitopes that share a T cell receptor (TCR)-face with host epitopes may activate Tregs capable of suppressing protective responses. We designed an immunoinformatic algorithm, JanusMatrix, to identify such epitopes and discovered that among human-host viruses, chronic viruses appear more human-like than viruses …

Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine Faculty Publications

Introduction: Patients with distributive shock who require high dose vasopressors have a high mortality. Angiotensin II (ATII) may prove useful in patients who remain hypotensive despite catecholamine and vasopressin therapy. The appropriate dose of parenteral angiotensin II for shock is unknown.

Methods: In total, 20 patients with distributive shock and a cardiovascular Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score of 4 were randomized to either ATII infusion (N?=?10) or placebo (N?=?10) plus standard of care. ATII was started at a dose of 20?ng/kg/min, and titrated for a goal of maintaining a mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 65?mmHg. The infusion (either ATII or …

Quantifying Economic Benefits For Rail Infrastructure Projects, Suzanna Long, Ruwen Qin, John Betak, Akhilesh Ojha, John J. Myers

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This project identifies metrics for measuring the benefit of rail infrastructure projects for key stakeholders. It is important that stakeholders with an interest in community economic development play an active role in the development of the rail network. Economic development activities in both rural and urban settings are essential if a nation is to realize growth and prosperity. Many communities have developed goals and visions to establish an economic development program, but they often fail to achieve their goals due to uncertainties during the project selection and planning process. Communities often select a project from a vast pool of ideas …

Mind Out Of Matter By Scott Johnson, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2014-2015 Discover the Heartbeat of Creative Life

What are the origins of religion and supernatural ideas in human consciousness and culture, and how do they evolve into our religious traditions? Groundbreaking composer Scott Johnson’s newest work, Mind Out of Matter, approaches this and other perennial questions of human existence with a lively, rock-infused musical sensibility. Inspired by the ideas of renowned philosopher Daniel C. Dennett, Johnson weaves Dennett’s recorded voice into a rich instrumental score performed by Alarm Will Sound, an adventurous 20-member band acclaimed by The New York Times as “one of the most vital and original ensembles on the American music scene.”

Learning Through Collaboration And Competition: Incorporating Problem-Based Learning And Competition-Based Learning In A Capstone Course, Ashay Desei, Michael Tippins, J. B. Arbaugh

Organization Management Journal

This article discusses an innovative capstone course to prepare students to be more business-ready upon graduation. By combining aspects of problem-based learning (PBL) and competition-based learning (CBL), a new undergraduate course allows students to gain practical experience while applying classroom knowledge to real business problems. Students are organized into teams of three to five and act as “consultants” to local businesses. Student consultants then develop and present competing recommendations (similar to the television show The Apprentice) to high-level managers within the organizations. Benefits from this course accrue not only to students, but also to faculty members, area businesses, and the …
