Induction Of Acute Lung Inflammation In Mice With Hemorrhagic Shock And Resuscitation: Role Of Hmgb1, Raymond L. C. Kao, Xuemei Xu, Anargyros Xenocostas, Neil Parry, Tina Mele, Claudio M. Martin, Tao Rui Oct 2014

Induction Of Acute Lung Inflammation In Mice With Hemorrhagic Shock And Resuscitation: Role Of Hmgb1, Raymond L. C. Kao, Xuemei Xu, Anargyros Xenocostas, Neil Parry, Tina Mele, Claudio M. Martin, Tao Rui

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Background: Hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation (HS/R) can induce multiple organ failure which is associated with high mortality. The lung is an organ commonly affected by the HS/R. Acute lung injury is a major cause of dysfunction in other organ systems. The objective of this study is to test the hypothesis that HS/R causes increased gut permeability which results in induction of high mobility group box1 protein (HMGB1) and further leads to the development of acute lung inflammation. Materials and methods: A mouse model of HS/R was employed in this study. Gut permeability and bacterial translocation were assessed with circulating FD4 …

Targeting The Small- And Intermediate Conductance Ca2+- Activated Potassium Channels: The Drug Binding Pocket At The Channel/Calmodulin Interface, Meng Cui, Guangrong Qin, Kunqian Yu, M. Scott Bowers, Miao Zhang

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The small- and intermediate-conductance Ca 2+ -activated potassium (SK/IK) channels play important roles in the regulation of excitable cells in both the central nervous and cardiovascular systems. Evidence from animal models has implicated SK/IK channels in neurological conditions such as ataxia and alcohol use disorders. Further, genome-wide association studies have suggested that cardiovascular abnormalities such as arrhythmias and hypertension are associated with single nucleotide polymorphisms that occur within the genes encoding the SK/IK channels. The Ca 2+ sensitivity of the SK/IK channels stems from a constitutively bound Ca 2+ -binding protein: calmodulin. Small-molecule positive modulators of SK/IK channels have been …

Effects Of Genetic Modification Of Phosphoinositol Pathway On Light Signaling And Secondary Metabolism In Tomato Plants, Mohammad Alimohammadi Oct 2014

Effects Of Genetic Modification Of Phosphoinositol Pathway On Light Signaling And Secondary Metabolism In Tomato Plants, Mohammad Alimohammadi

Theses and Dissertations

Inositol- (1,4,5) triphosphate (InsP3) is known as an important signaling factor and a regulator of plant responses to environmental and stress conditions. Overexpression of the InsP 5-ptase gene is found to enhance tolerance of transgenic tomato plants to abiotic stress and the induction of lycopene synthesis in InsP 5-ptase transgenic plants. Here, we demonstrated that the genetic reduction of InsP3 affected the overall phosphoinositol pathway, flavonoid metabolism, and light signaling in InsP 5-ptase transgenic plants. Transgenic plants that overexpress the InsP 5-ptase gene demonstrate an increase in the expression of major light signaling transcription factors (LeHY5, SIMYB12, LeELIP). We found …

Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute) Ecological Knowledge Of Piñon-Juniper Woodlands: Implications For Conservation And Sustainable Resource Use In Two Southern Nevada Protected Areas, Brian John Lefler Oct 2014

Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute) Ecological Knowledge Of Piñon-Juniper Woodlands: Implications For Conservation And Sustainable Resource Use In Two Southern Nevada Protected Areas, Brian John Lefler

Dissertations and Theses

Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute) have inhabited the southern Great Basin for thousands of years, and consider Nuvagantu (where snow sits) in the Spring Mountains landscape to be the locus of their creation as a people. Their ancestral territory spans parts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and California. My research identifies and describes the heterogeneous character of Nuwuvi ecological knowledge (NEK) of piñon-juniper woodland ecosystems within two federal protected areas (PAs) in southeastern Nevada, the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNRA) and the Desert National Wildlife Refuge (DNWR), as remembered and practiced to varying degrees by 22 select Nuwuvi knowledge holders. I focus …

Putting Reins On The Brain. How The Body And Environment Use It, Dobromir Dotov Oct 2014

Putting Reins On The Brain. How The Body And Environment Use It, Dobromir Dotov

Journal Articles

Radical embodied cognitive neuroscience (RECN) will probably rely on dynamical systems theory (DST) and complex systems theory for methods and formalism. Yet, there have been plenty of non-radical neurodynamicists out there for quite some time. How much of their work fits with radical embodied cognitive science, what do they need RECN for, and what are the inconsistencies between RECN and established neurodynamics that would have to be resolved? This paper is both theoretical hypothesis and review. First, it provides a brief overview of the typical, purely structural considerations why the central nervous systems (CNS) should be treated as a nonlinear …

Regan, Carine E Carels, Frank A D T G Wagener

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) administration is a promising adjuvant therapy to treat tissue injury. However, MSC survival after administration is often hampered by oxidative stress at the site of injury. Heme oxygenase (HO) generates the cytoprotective effector molecules biliverdin/bilirubin, carbon monoxide (CO) and iron/ferritin by breaking down heme. Since HO-activity mediates anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidative effects, we hypothesized that modulation of the HO-system affects MSC survival. Adipose-derived MSCs (ASCs) from wild type (WT) and HO-2 knockout (KO) mice were isolated and characterized with respect to ASC marker expression. In order to analyze potential modulatory effects of the HO-system on ASC …

Residency Time As An Indicator Of Reproductive Restraint In Male Burying Beetles, Ashlee N. Smith, Mark C. Belk, J. Curtis Creighton Oct 2014

Residency Time As An Indicator Of Reproductive Restraint In Male Burying Beetles, Ashlee N. Smith, Mark C. Belk, J. Curtis Creighton

Faculty Publications

The cost of reproduction theory posits that there are trade-offs between current and future reproduction because resources that are allocated to current offspring cannot be used for future reproductive opportunities. Two adaptive reproductive strategies have been hypothesized to offset the costs of reproduction and maximize lifetime fitness. The terminal investment hypothesis predicts that as individuals age they will allocate more resources to current reproduction as a response to decreasing residual reproductive value. The reproductive restraint hypotheses predicts that as individuals age they will allocate fewer resources to current reproduction to increase the chance of surviving for an additional reproductive opportunity. …

Toward A Federal Constitutional Right To Employment, R. George Wright Oct 2014

Toward A Federal Constitutional Right To Employment, R. George Wright

Seattle University Law Review

This Article outlines an argument for a federal constitutional right to employment. The Article begins by examining the harms and costs of involuntary long-term unemployment. It then discusses the historical contributions to our understanding of the value of work, before drawing on several well-established jurisprudential distinctions to explain why, and to justify initial optimism regarding a constitutional employment right.

Methods To Impair Hematologic Cancer Progenitor Cells And Compounds Related Thereto, Craig T. Jordan Oct 2014

Methods To Impair Hematologic Cancer Progenitor Cells And Compounds Related Thereto, Craig T. Jordan

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

Primitive or progenitor hematologic cancer cells have been implicated in the early stages and development of leukemia and malignant lymphoproliferative disorders, including acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), chronic myelogenous leuke mia (CML) and chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL). Interleu kin-3 receptor alpha chain (IL-3Ra or CD123) is strongly expressed on progenitor hematologic cancer cells, but is vir tually undetectable on normal bone marrow cells. The present invention provides methods of impairing progenitor hemato logic cancer (e.g., leukemia and lymphomic) cells by selec tively targeting cells expressing CD123. These methods are useful in the detection and treatment of leukemias and malig nant lymphoproliferative …

Using Class Interfaces And Mock Objects To Unit Test Aspects, Michael Bryan Snider Oct 2014

Using Class Interfaces And Mock Objects To Unit Test Aspects, Michael Bryan Snider

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

In object oriented programming (OOP) class objects are individual units of code that encapsulate the desired functionality of each object. AOP is an attempt to handle the cross-cutting concerns that represent functionality needed by a class, but is not specific to that class. The cross-cutting functionality is implemented in AOP by using a class-like structure, the aspect. Aspects do not have their own context and as such are dependent upon other objects for their context. By not having their own context it is difficult to test the functionality of aspects. This study investigated the effectiveness of using class interfaces and …
