Civilization And Self-Determination: Interpreting R.G. Collingwood For The Twenty-First Century - Part I, Gautam Ghosh Oct 2014

Civilization And Self-Determination: Interpreting R.G. Collingwood For The Twenty-First Century - Part I, Gautam Ghosh

Comparative Civilizations Review

This article – the first of two – elaborates and endorses the understanding of civilization as advanced by R. G. Collingwood. Particular attention is given to two of his most neglected works, The New Leviathan and "What 'Civilization' Means." The New Leviathan in particular was written in the context of the rise of fascism and the prosecution of World War II. To support the war effort, Collingwood reconceptualized notions of civilization and linked it to a rationality of self-determination. Central to his argument are the distinctions he draws between civilization and barbarism, on the one hand, and between social, economic …

Mmu-Mir-615-3p Regulates Lipoapoptosis By Inhibiting C/Ebp Homologous Protein., Yasuhiro Miyamoto, Amy S Mauer, Swarup Kumar, Justin L. Mott, Harmeet Malhi

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Lipoapoptosis occurring due to an excess of saturated free fatty acids such as palmitate is a key pathogenic event in the initiation of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Palmitate loading of cells activates the endoplasmic reticulum stress response, including induction of the proapoptotic transcription factor C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP). Furthermore, the loss of microRNAs is implicated in regulating apoptosis under conditions of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. The aim of this study was to identify specific microRNAs regulating CHOP expression during palmitate-induced ER stress. Five microRNAs were repressed under palmitate-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress conditions in hepatocyte cell lines (miR-92b-3p, miR-328-3p, miR-484, miR-574-5p, …

Heroes: Promoting And Branding An Original Designer Toys Using Motion Graphics, Yang-Hsin Chen

Theses

"Heroes" is a series of designer toys that were designed for my future business called "T-Model." This project aims to create new types of designer toys to see how effective they can be in promoting an original business and how powerful they can be in presenting with current digital media. The "Heroes" series is inspired by simple human-like characters such as "Lego," "Mr. Potato Head," and "Kidrobot." This toy series consists of three different kinds of models representing different time periods, countries, and historical figures.

This project is divided into three major steps: 3D character design, three motion graphic pieces, …

Ultrasound Guided Robot For Human Liver Biopsy Using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound For Hemostasis, Viraj Reddy Adduru Oct 2014

Ultrasound Guided Robot For Human Liver Biopsy Using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound For Hemostasis, Viraj Reddy Adduru

Theses

Percutaneous liver biopsy is the gold standard among clinician's tool to diagnose and guide subsequent therapy for liver disease. Ultrasound image guidance is being increasingly used to reduce associated procedural risks but post–biopsy complications still persist. The major and most common complication is hemorrhage, which is highly unpredictable and may sometimes lead to death. Though the risk of mortality is low, it is too high for a diagnostic procedure. Post-biopsy care and additional surgical intervention to arrest hemorrhage make liver biopsy a costly procedure for health care delivery systems. Non-invasive methods to stop bleeding exist like electro–cautery, microwave, lasers, radio …

Family Of Flp Peptides In Caenorhabditis Elegans And Related Nematodes, Chris Li, Kyuhyung Kim

Publications and Research

Neuropeptides regulate all aspects of behavior in multicellular organisms. Because of their ability to act at long distances, neuropeptides can exert their effects beyond the conventional synaptic connections, thereby adding an intricate layer of complexity to the activity of neural networks. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a large number of neuropeptide genes that are expressed throughout the nervous system have been identified. The actions of these peptides supplement the synaptic connections of the 302 neurons, allowing for fine tuning of neural networks and increasing the ways in which behaviors can be regulated. In this review, we focus on a large …

Combining crop plants with other plant species in agro-ecosystems is one way to enhance ecological pest and disease regulation mechanisms. Resource availability and microclimatic variation mechanisms affect processes related to pest and pathogen life cycles. These mechanisms are supported both by empirical research and by epidemiological models, yet their relative importance in a real complex agro-ecosystem is still not known. Our aim was thus to assess the independent effects and the relative importance of different variables related to resource availability and microclimatic variation that explain pest and disease occurrence at the plot scale in real complex agro-ecosystems. The study was …

Sanctuary In The Richmond City Jail, S. Croft Oct 2014

Sanctuary In The Richmond City Jail, S. Croft

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

The following article is a collaboration among four individuals about unique programs run through “The Sanctuary” at the Richmond City Jail in Virginia, US. The Richmond City Jail is one of few jails in the US to offer programs to inmates who serve only short sentences as compared to prisons where the incarcerated serve much longer. In addition to this anomaly, students from outside of the jail come inside to take college classes with the inmates. Programs include literature classes, yoga, religious studies, creative writing, and more. The article explores the impact of The Sanctuary on the spirit, confidence, and …

Waking Up In Prison: Critical Discussions Between Typical College Students And Their Incarcerated Peers, Tabitha Dell'angelo

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

This article describes a typical college course that was taught in a youth correctional facility. The course combined traditional college students and inmates from the prison. Over the course of 15 weeks both groups grew to understand one another and themselves. The article seeks to illustrate the realities related both to fear and success in such an undertaking. This collaborative model between colleges and correctional facilities has promise as a model for prison education.

Identities, Education And Reentry: Performative Spaces And Enclosures, Randall Wright Oct 2014

Identities, Education And Reentry: Performative Spaces And Enclosures, Randall Wright

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

This is part one of a two-part interdisciplinary paper that examines the various forces (discourses and institutional processes) that shape prisoner-student identities. Discourses of officers from a correctional website serve as a limited, single case study of discourses that ascribe dehumanized, stigmatized identities to "the prisoner." Two critical concepts, performative spaces and identity enclosures, are purposed as potential critical, emancipatory terms to explore the prisoner-student identity work that occurs in schools and elsewhere in prison. This paper is guided by the effort to assist teachers to act as transformative intellectuals in prisons and closed-custody settings by becoming more aware of …

The objectives of these experiments were to characterize rumen motility patterns of cattle fed once daily using a real-time wireless telemetry system, determine when to measure rumen motility with this system, and determine the effect of ruminal dosing of ergot alkaloids on rumen motility. Ruminally cannulated Holstein steers (n = 8) were fed a basal diet of alfalfa cubes once daily. Rumen motility was measured by monitoring real-time pressure changes within the rumen using wireless telemetry and pressure transducers. Experiment 1 consisted of three 24-h rumen pressure collections beginning immediately after feeding. Data were recorded, stored, and analyzed using …

Mercury And Selenium In Stranded Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins And Implications For Their Trophic, Duan Gui, Ri-Qing Yu, Laiguo Chen, Laiguo Chen, Qin Tu, Hui Mo, Yuping Wu

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

As top predators in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) of China, Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) are bioindicators for examining regional trends of environmental contaminants in the PRE. We examined samples from stranded S. chinensis in the PRE, collected since 2004, to study the distribution and fate of total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and selenium (Se) in the major tissues, in individuals at different ages and their prey fishes from the PRE. This study also investigated the potential protective effects of Se against the toxicities of accumulated THg. Dolphin livers contained the highest concentrations of THg (32.34658.98 mg g21 dw) …
