Perilous Wanderings Through The Enchanted Forest: The Influence Of The Fairy-Tale Tradition On Mirkwood In Tolkien's The Hobbit, Marco R.S. Post
Perilous Wanderings Through The Enchanted Forest: The Influence Of The Fairy-Tale Tradition On Mirkwood In Tolkien's The Hobbit, Marco R.S. Post
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Considers the roots of Mirkwood in European fairy tale traditions, using Basile’s Pentamerone as a typical example, and how Tolkien adapted and rejected traditional features of the perilous wood to suit his thematic and stylistic needs as a story-teller.

Cults Of Lovecraft: The Impact Of H.P. Lovecraft's Fiction On Contemporary Occult Practices, John Engle
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Examines a particularly troubling use of fiction: the adoption of an author’s work, against his own intentions, as a quasi-religious text for cultic practices. Lovecraft’s mythos is thus observed in the process of deliberately being made into a worship tradition by occult and Satanic practitioners, in spite of the author’s personal scientific rationalism.

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Alexei Kondratiev Student Paper Award, Mythcon 45. Examines traditional political structures, theories of how they work, and how they play out in Tolkien’s Middle-earth among fantastic races and landscapes. Especially intriguing is the way in which the immortality of some races and individuals affects the power balance.
Toying With Fantasy: The Postmodern Playground Of Terry Pratchett's Discworld Novels, Daniel Luthi
Toying With Fantasy: The Postmodern Playground Of Terry Pratchett's Discworld Novels, Daniel Luthi
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Attempts to discover exactly how Terry Pratchett manages to get away with violating the rules of the fantasy tradition laid out in Tolkien’s “On Fairy-stories.” Pratchett consistently revels in the absurdity of Discworld as a concept, breaks the fourth wall, and disrupts Tolkien’s proviso against satirizing magic itself; and yet the Discworld sails on, imperturbable. Pratchett’s concept of narrative imperative is discussed as one of the keys to the success of his invented world.

Gucy2c Lysosomotropic Endocytosis Delivers Immunotoxin Therapy To Metastatic Colorectal Cancer., Glen P Marszalowicz, Adam E. Snook, Michael Sullivan Magee, Dante Merlino, Lisa D Berman-Booty, Scott A Waldman
Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers
The emergence of targeted cancer therapy has been limited by the paucity of determinants which are tumor-specific and generally associated with disease, and have cell dynamics which effectively deploy cytotoxic payloads. Guanylyl cyclase C (GUCY2C) may be ideal for targeting because it is normally expressed only in insulated barrier compartments, including intestine and brain, but over-expressed by systemic metastatic colorectal tumors. Here, we reveal that GUCY2C rapidly internalizes from the cell surface to lysosomes in intestinal and colorectal cancer cells. Endocytosis is independent of ligand binding and receptor activation, and is mediated by clathrin. This mechanism suggests a design for …

Response Surface Optimization Of Microwave-Assisted Sulfated Polysaccharide Extraction From Porphyra Dentate, Yeu-Pyng Lin, Shao-Chi Wu, Jean-Yu Hwang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
An experiment was performed by adjusting the pH value (4-10) of a 10%-to-90% ethanol solution (v/v) and using it as an extraction solvent and, subsequently, using microwaveassisted extraction (MAE) to extract Porphyra denate solutions. The sulfated polysaccharides (µg/mL) of these extraction solutions were evaluated. The optimal treatments of P. denate extracts obtained using MAE were studied using response surface methodology. The study was performed using a three-level, four-factor design and aimed to determine the optimal combinations of the ethanol concentration (10%-90%, v/v, X1), pH value of an ethanol solution (4-10, X2), microwave power level (200-400 W, X3), and heating time …
Assessing Differences In Species Susceptibility To Phocine Distemper Virus (Pdv) In Harp (Phoca Groenlandica), Harbor (Phoca Vitulina Concolor) And Gray Seals (Halichoerus Grypus) Of The Northwest Atlantic, Andrea Bogomolni
Doctoral Dissertations
The recent emergence of morbillivirus in marine mammals as the etiology of several large scale mortality events raised questions about the role of immunosuppressive persistent organic pollutants and natural toxins in the severity, extent and duration of events. A morbillivirus of marine mammals, Phocine distemper virus (PDV), had devastating population level effects in Europe in 1988 and 2002. In 2006, a new isolate of PDV was determined to be responsible for mortality during the 2006 Northeast US Pinniped Unusually Mortality Event. The recent North American PDV mortality event provided a means to test several hypotheses designed to increase our overall …

Octopus Tetricus (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) As An Ecosystem Engineer, David Scheel, Peter Godfrey-Smith, Matthew Lawrence
Publications and Research
The Sydney octopus (Octopus tetricus) occurs in unusual numbers on a shell bed of its prey remains that have accumulated as an extended midden where additional octopuses excavate dens. Here, O tetricus are ecosystem engineers, organisms that modulate availability of resources to other species and to their own species by causing physical state changes in materials. A community of invertebrate grazers and scavengers has developed on the shell bed. Fishes are attracted to the shell bed in numbers significantly greater than in nearby habitats. Large predators, including wobbegong sharks, were attracted to and fed on concentrations of fish, inhibiting the …

A Case Of Cutaneous Larva Migrans Presenting In A Pregnant Patient., Kasie Kudrewicz, Kylee N Crittenden, Alison Himes
Women’s Health Articles
Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a pruritic dermatitis caused by migration of the animal hookworm larvae into the epidermis. We present a case of CLM in a 31-year-old pregnant woman. The treatment of CLM relies on antihelminthic agents, such as thiabendazole, albendazole, and ivermectin. This case was interesting in that the standard treatment options previously mentioned were contraindicated owing to the patient's pregnancy. Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen resulted in complete resolution of her lesion and symptoms.

The Anniston Community Health Survey was a community-based cross-sectional study of Anniston, Alabama, residents who live in close proximity to a former PCB production facility to identify factors associated with serum PCB levels. The survey comprises 765 Anniston residents who completed a questionnaire interview and provided a blood sample for analysis in 2005–2007. Several reports based on data from the Anniston survey have been previously published, including associations between PCB exposure and diabetes and blood pressure. In this study we examine demographic, behavioral, dietary, and occupational characteristics of Anniston survey participants as predictors of serum PCB concentrations. Of the 765 …

When Electronic Arts Inc. (Electronic Arts) launched its video game series NCAA Football in June 1993, the available technology limited developers to crafting avatars that looked like faceless figurines. Today, however, advancements in digital technology have enabled developers to create “virtual players” that strongly resemble their real-life counterparts. For example, in NCAA Football 12, the avatar that represents University of Florida running back Chris Rainey possesses Chris Rainey’s actual height, weight, skin complexion, and hair style. In addition, both Chris Rainey and his virtual counterpart wear the same jersey number, visor, gloves, and sweatbands.
Recently, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Taylor …
A Dangerous Servant And A Fearful Master: Why Florida’S Prescribed Fire Statute Should Be Amended, Stephen Mccullers
A Dangerous Servant And A Fearful Master: Why Florida’S Prescribed Fire Statute Should Be Amended, Stephen Mccullers
Florida Law Review
Fire will not be denied its opportunity to burn through Florida’s forests. The citizens of Florida, however, can accept the responsibility of deciding how the forest will burn. Fire can be purposefully ignited under exact weather conditions, acting as a controlled but dangerous servant with a slim chance of escape or harm. Or, if Floridians refuse to accept any responsibility in proactively managing forest fire, nature will determine when the forest will burn. The fire will be a fearful master, raging through the forest with the potential to cause great harm to people, property, and the environment.

Bone fragility is a concern for aged and diseased bone. Measuring bone toughness and understanding fracture properties of the bone are critical for predicting fracture risk associated with age and disease and for preclinical testing of therapies. A reference point indentation technique (BioDent) has recently been developed to determine bone's resistance to fracture in a minimally invasive way by measuring the indentation distance increase (IDI) between the first and last indentations over cyclic indentations in the same position. In this study, we investigate the relationship between fracture toughness KC and reference point indentation parameters (i.e. IDI, total indentation distance (TID) …

United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications
The lower Platte River, Nebraska, provides drinking water, irrigation water, and in-stream flows for recreation, wildlife habitat, and vital habitats for several threatened and endangered species. The United States Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Lower Platte River Corridor Alliance (LPRCA) developed site-specific regression models for water-quality constituents at four sites (Shell Creek near Columbus, Nebraska [USGS site 06795500]; Elkhorn River at Waterloo, Nebraska [USGS site 06800500]; Salt Creek near Ashland, Nebraska [USGS site 06805000]; and Platte River at Louisville, Nebraska [USGS site 06805500]) in the lower Platte River corridor. The models were developed by relating continuously monitored water-quality …

We suggest a novel PCR-free assay that allows fluorescent detection of specific nucleic acid sequences with high selectivity and sensitivity. The assay can discriminate signal nucleotide substitution in an analyzed nucleic acid with high accuracy even at ambient temperatures. The high sensitivity of the assay is predetermined by the possibility of fluorescent signal amplification due to the catalytic action of an enzyme, which recognizes only the complex of the probe with the analyte and not the probe itself. The assay is cost-efficient, which is especially beneficial for the analysis of multiple nucleic acid analytes: two short unmodified oligonucleotides need to …
