Regular Dipyridamole Therapy Produces Sustained Protection Against Cardiac Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury: Is It Time To Revisit Paris?, Vincent M. Figueredo, M.D., Chika Okusa, Kazuhiro Kaneda, Yoshitaka Inamura, Masami Miyamae
Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Increased activated Akt and eNOS expression coincide with this persistent cardioprotection. Emergent coronary reperfusion therapies are rarely carried out before considerable myocardial injury has occurred. Moreover, reperfusion after prolonged ischemia produces paradoxical ischemia-reperfusion injury, attenuating the efficacy of reperfusion therapies. This has provided impetus for identifying chronic therapies to protect against ischemia-reperfusion injury in those at risk. We previously found that regular dipyridamole therapy produces a chronic preconditioning-like effect mediated through adenosine A1 receptors.
METHODS: To determine how long this chronic preconditioning effect of dipyridamole remains present after discontinuing therapy, guinea pigs received 4 mg/kg/day in their water for …

Why do we care about morphological complexity?
-
Typologically languages vary in how many morphosyntactic properties they express; morphological systems can have a large number of inflection classes, morphological distinguishers (e.g. exponents) to express these properties

White Paper: Electronic Cigarettes In The Indoor Environment, Cheryl L. Marcham, Et Al.
Publications
Dr. Marcham was the team leader of this project and was one of 14 members who created this white paper. Electronic-cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are battery-powered devices of many different configurations that deliver vaporized nicotine and other chemicals or flavorings to users, but that do not contain tobacco or require combustion. E-cigarettes have an internal, rechargeable, battery-operated heat source that converts liquid nicotine and/or flavorings into a mist or vapor that the user inhales. These devices are frequently promoted as a healthier or safer alternative to traditional cigarettes for users and bystanders. Consequently, there has been growing interest among manufacturers and others …

Pharmaceutical Sciences
Background: Cyclooxygenase (COX)-derived prostanoids (PGE2, PGI2) are important contributors to the process of decidualization. Previous studies showed the presence of Ang-(1-7) in the primary and secondary decidualized zones of the implantation site at early pregnancy. Decreased concentrations of Ang-(1-7) were found in the decidualized uterus compared to the non-decidualized uterus of pseudopregnant rats, suggesting that low levels of Ang-(1-7) are required for successful decidualization at early pregnancy.
Methods: To understand the role of Ang-(1-7) in prostaglandin production in a decidualized uterus, induced by a bolus injection of sesame oil, Ang-(1-7) (24 μg/kg/h) or vehicle was then infused directly into the …

Background: Male and female vertebrates typically differ in a range of characteristics, from morphology to physiology to behavior, which are influenced by factors such as the social environment and the internal hormonal and genetic milieu. However, sex differences in gene expression profiles in the brains of vertebrates are only beginning to be understood. Fishes provide a unique complement to studies of sex differences in mammals and birds given that fish show extreme plasticity and lability of sexually dimorphic characters and behaviors during development and even adulthood. Hence, teleost models can give additional insight into sexual differentiation. The goal of …
The Jurisprudence Of Nature: The Importance Of Defining What Is "Natural", Jill M. Fraley
The Jurisprudence Of Nature: The Importance Of Defining What Is "Natural", Jill M. Fraley
Catholic University Law Review
Informal regulations defining nature, natural, and organic have proliferated across diverse fields of law from patents to agriculture, from taxation to gemstones. The unwritten jurisprudence of defining nature is primarily a story of the struggle to isolate mankind’s manipulations and interventions, creating a man-nature dichotomy that frustrates more than it explicates. This failure to define nature continues with the Supreme Court’s recent Myriad decision, which struggles to define the law of nature exception to patentability, highlighting the challenge of measuring levels of human intervention and manipulation. Our dichotomous definitions do not generate neat, binary answers, but rather complicated scales of …

Experimental Study Of Needle-Tissue Interaction Forces: Effect Of Needle Geometries, Insertion Methods And Tissue Characteristics., Shan Jiang, Pan Li, Yan Yu, Jun Liu, Zhiyong Yang
Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers
A thorough understanding of needle-tissue interaction mechanics is necessary to optimize needle design, achieve robotically needle steering, and establish surgical simulation system. It is obvious that the interaction is influenced by numerous variable parameters, which are divided into three categories: needle geometries, insertion methods, and tissue characteristics. A series of experiments are performed to explore the effect of influence factors (material samples n=5 for each factor) on the insertion force. Data were collected from different biological tissues and a special tissue-equivalent phantom with similar mechanical properties, using a 1-DOF mechanical testing system instrumented with a 6-DOF force/torque (F/T) sensor. The …

U.S. And Spanish Newspapers And The Coverage Of The Land Campaign Of Cube In The Spanish-American War: June 7 - July 16, 1898, Tyler Wilson
Honors Theses
The Spanish-American War was a significant event in the history of the United States that initiated America’s imperialistic goals by spreading its economic and political influence in the Caribbean, the Pacific, and other overseas markets. In 1898, the U.S. saw its foreign and economic interests collide with Spain and its foreign policy in Cuba. This was an opportunity for the United States to expand and colonize areas of the world by challenging Spain and declaring itself as an emerging super power at the time.
The growth of journalism in the 1890s developed alongside America’s outward expansion by being the primary …

Background: Heart failure (HF) is associated with cachexia and consequent exercise intolerance. Given the beneficial effects of aerobic exercise training (ET) in HF, the aim of this study was to determine if the ET performed during the transition from cardiac dysfunction to HF would alter the expression of anabolic and catabolic factors, thus preventing skeletal muscle wasting. Methods and Results: We employed ascending aortic stenosis (AS) inducing HF in Wistar male rats. Controls were sham operated animals. At 18 weeks after surgery, rats with cardiac dysfunction were randomized to 10 weeks of aerobic ET (AS-ET) or to an untrained group …

Novel Therapeutic Strategies In Lung Cancer, Courtney A. Kurtyka
Novel Therapeutic Strategies In Lung Cancer, Courtney A. Kurtyka
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death and the second most diagnosed cancer in the United States. Unfortunately, many patients either do not have any common mutations for which there are already targetable agents, or they eventually become resistant to these compounds. As such, there is a high demand for new, effective methods of treating this disease as well as predicting patient prognosis and potential benefit from chemotherapy. In this work, numerous strategies for treating lung cancer are explored.
The first method described here is through the use of a pan-early 2 factor (E2F) inhibitor, HLM006474, which is …
Differentiating Geo-Spatiotemporal Aquatic Larval Habitats Of Anopheles Gambiae Complex In Urban Agriculture And Urban Non-Agriculture Environments In Accra, Ghana, Samia Mckeever
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
To meet the rising food demands of communities in Accra,Ghana, urban agriculture has been popularized as a way to increase food security and improve nutrition (Donovan et al., 2012). Urban agriculture is defined as "the cultivation of crops at both the subsistence and commercial levels including the keeping of livestock in open spaces in urban areas (Adjaye, n.d.). In Accra, urban agriculture covers 1,091 hectares, employs over one thousand people, and supplies residents with 90% of its vegetables ("Accra Metropolitan", n.d.). Further, 60% of households in Accra participate in backyard farming ("Accra Metropolitan", n.d.). Although urban agriculture provides many benefits …
