Apropos, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2014-2015 Discover the Heartbeat of Creative Life

With trademark playfulness and wit, The Symptoms, Hungary’s premiere contemporary dance/theater company, ponders the critical questions of aging. When will I lose my virginity? Will I find work I love? How do I balance work with parenthood? Do I have enough money to retire? How long will I keep my looks? Will I ever have sex again? The Symptoms’ clear-eyed, kind-hearted response to our human vulnerabilities is poignant, funny, and brave. Don’t miss the American debut of this highly original troupe.

Should Inherent Human Dignity Be Considered Intrinsically Heuristic?, Bharat Ranganathan

Religion Faculty Publications

What are “human rights” supposed to protect? According to most human rights doctrines, including most notably the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), human rights aim to protect “human dignity.” But what this concept amounts to and what its source is remain unclear. According to Glenn Hughes (2011), human rights theorists ought to consider human dignity as an “intrinsically heuristic concept,” whose content is partially understood but is not fully determined. In this comment, I criticize Hughes's account. On my view, understanding inherent human dignity as an intrinsically heuristic concept tethers it to an “indeterminateness of sense,” which leaves it …

Explosive Dome Eruptions Modulated By Periodic Gas-Driven Inflation, Jeffrey B. Johnson, J. J. Lyons, B. J. Andrews, J. M. Lees Oct 2014

Explosive Dome Eruptions Modulated By Periodic Gas-Driven Inflation, Jeffrey B. Johnson, J. J. Lyons, B. J. Andrews, J. M. Lees

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Volcan Santiaguito (Guatemala) “breathes” with extraordinary regularity as the edifice's conduit system accumulates free gas, which periodically vents to the atmosphere. Periodic pressurization controls explosion timing, which nearly always occurs at peak inflation, as detected with tiltmeters. Tilt cycles in January 2012 reveal regular 26 ± 6 min inflation/deflation cycles corresponding to at least ~101 kg/s of gas fluxing the system. Very long period (VLP) earthquakes presage explosions and occur during cycles when inflation rates are most rapid. VLPs locate ~300 m below the vent and indicate mobilization of volatiles, which ascend at ~50 m/s. Rapid gas ascent feeds …

"Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum": Reproduction And Resistance In Octavia Butler, Margaret Atwood, And The Alien Series, Amandine Faucheux Oct 2014

"Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum": Reproduction And Resistance In Octavia Butler, Margaret Atwood, And The Alien Series, Amandine Faucheux

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This thesis proposes a comparative study of Octavia E. Butlers Xenogenesis trilogy (1987-89), Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale (1985), and the Alien series (1979-97). I argue that these three texts resist patriarchal oppression upon the female fertile body. I examine how they rewrite and subvert such institutions as motherhood, the family, and the heterosexual couple, in order to redefine and empower woman. In the first chapter, I argue that Octavia Butler rewrites Western origin stories in order to put woman and people of color at its center, which provokes a redefinition of the essential woman. In chapter two, I examine …

Detroit Works Long-Term Planning Project: Engagement Strategies For Blending Community And Technical Expertise, Toni L. Griffin, Dan Cramer, Megan Powers

Publications and Research

In January 2013, civic leaders, community stakeholders, and residents came together to release Detroit Future City: 2012 Detroit Strategic Framework Plan, a guiding blueprint for transforming Detroit from its current state of population loss and excessive vacancy into a model for the reinvention of post-industrial American cities. Three years prior, the U.S. Census had reported that the city had lost 24% of its population over the last decade and had experienced a 20% increase in vacant and abandoned property, bringing total vacancy to roughly the size of Manhattan. In addition to physical and economic challenges, Detroiters had also acknowledged significant …

Women And Gender: Useful Categories Of Analysis In Environmental History, Nancy Unger Oct 2014

Women And Gender: Useful Categories Of Analysis In Environmental History, Nancy Unger

History

In 1990, Carolyn Merchant proposed, in a roundtable discussion published in The Journal of American History, that gender perspective be added to the conceptual frameworks in environmental history. 1 Her proposal was expanded by Melissa Leach and Cathy Green in the British journal Environment and History in 1997. 2 The ongoing need for broader and more thoughtful and analytic investigations into the powerful relationship between gender and the environment throughout history was confirmed in 2001 by Richard White and Vera Norwood in "Environmental History, Retrospect and Prospect," a forum in the Pacific Historical Review. Both Norwood, in her provocative contribution …

The Influence Of Religion On Socially Responsible Investing, Monika Czerwonka Oct 2014

The Influence Of Religion On Socially Responsible Investing, Monika Czerwonka

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) is an alternative way to invest one’s assets. SRI, apart from financial returns, also considers the environmental, social or ethical aspects of an investment decision. Socially responsible investors are interested not only in maximizing their financial return in the long run, but also in taking into consideration other non-financial issues, that is, so-called ESG factors (Environment, Social and Governance).

Most of the existing papers on SRI focus on financial performance. There is a need for more research on the conceptual and theoretical bases of such investing; in particular, the aspirations of SRI investors or motives that …

Co-Opted Oxysterol-Binding Orp And Vap Proteins Channel Sterols To Rna Virus Replication Sites Via Membrane Contact Sites, Daniel Barajas, Kai Xu, Isabel Fernández De Castro Martín, Zsuzsanna Sasvari, Federica Brandizzi, Cristina Risco, Peter D. Nagy Oct 2014

Co-Opted Oxysterol-Binding Orp And Vap Proteins Channel Sterols To Rna Virus Replication Sites Via Membrane Contact Sites, Daniel Barajas, Kai Xu, Isabel Fernández De Castro Martín, Zsuzsanna Sasvari, Federica Brandizzi, Cristina Risco, Peter D. Nagy

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Viruses recruit cellular membranes and subvert cellular proteins involved in lipid biosynthesis to build viral replicase complexes and replication organelles. Among the lipids, sterols are important components of membranes, affecting the shape and curvature of membranes. In this paper, the tombusvirus replication protein is shown to co-opt cellular Oxysterol-binding protein related proteins (ORPs), whose deletion in yeast model host leads to decreased tombusvirus replication. In addition, tombusviruses also subvert Scs2p VAP protein to facilitate the formation of membrane contact sites (MCSs), where membranes are juxtaposed, likely channeling lipids to the replication sites. In all, these events result in redistribution and …

Sculpting The Umls Refined Semantic Network, Zhe He, C. Paul Morrey, Yehoshua Perl, Gai Elhanan, Ling Chen, Yan Chen, James Geller Oct 2014

Sculpting The Umls Refined Semantic Network, Zhe He, C. Paul Morrey, Yehoshua Perl, Gai Elhanan, Ling Chen, Yan Chen, James Geller

Publications and Research

Background The Refined Semantic Network (RSN) for the UMLS was previously introduced to complement the UMLS Semantic Network (SN). The RSN partitions the UMLS Metathesaurus (META) into disjoint groups of concepts. Each such group is semantically uniform. However, the RSN was initially an order of magnitude larger than the SN, which is undesirable since to be useful, a semantic network should be compact. Most semantic types in the RSN represent combinations of semantic types in the UMLS SN. Such a “combination semantic type” is called Intersection Semantic Type (IST). Many ISTs are assigned to very few concepts. Moreover, when reviewing …

Knowledge, Attitude, Belief And Behavior Of The Bagmati River Users In Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, Soumi Roy Chowdhury, Alok K. Bohara, Hari Katuwal, Jose Pagan, Jennifer Thatcher

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

To add to the existing state of knowledge, the present paper will list out the existence of other unidentified factors that may have a bearing on health outcomes. The relatively new branch of KABB (knowledge, attitude, belief and behavioral) studies tries to locate any differences, if they exist, in the awareness of the population about better health and behavioral practices. This paper seeks to understand the potential role being played by cultural and religious practices in explaining the inconsistency in individual’s knowledge and behavior.

Longitudinal Trajectories Of Cholesterol From Midlife Through Late Life According To Apolipoprotein E Allele Status, Brian Downer, Steven Estus, Yuriko Katsumata, David W. Fardo Oct 2014

Longitudinal Trajectories Of Cholesterol From Midlife Through Late Life According To Apolipoprotein E Allele Status, Brian Downer, Steven Estus, Yuriko Katsumata, David W. Fardo

Physiology Faculty Publications

Background: Previous research indicates that total cholesterol levels increase with age during young adulthood and middle age and decline with age later in life. This is attributed to changes in diet, body composition, medication use, physical activity, and hormone levels. In the current study we utilized data from the Framingham Heart Study Original Cohort to determine if variations in apolipoprotein E (APOE), a gene involved in regulating cholesterol homeostasis, influence trajectories of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and total: HDL cholesterol ratio from midlife through late life.

Methods: Cholesterol trajectories from midlife through late life were modeled using generalized …
