Ph-Sensitive Mucoadhesive Film-Forming Gels And Wax-Film Composites Suitable For Topical And Mucosal Delivery Of Molecules, Russell J. Mumper, Michael Jay
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents
The present invention relates to pH-sensitive mucoadhesive film-forming gels and wax-film composites suitable for topical and mucosal delivery of molecules of interest, namely active pharmaceuticals. The gels comprise a pharmaceutically acceptable pH-sensitive polymer that responds to a lowering of pH by precipitating into films when in contact with the skin or mucosal surface. The films also comprise an adhesive polymer that allows the film to remain in contact with the tissue for an extended period of time. The wax-film composites comprise a bi-layer film having both the said pH-sensitive mucoadhesive layer to promote strong adherence to the skin and mucosal …

Digital Media Use In Art Therapy, Natalie Rae Carlton
Digital Media Use In Art Therapy, Natalie Rae Carlton
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
This art-based, phenomenological inquiry investigated how four art therapists and five art therapy clients have used digital media. Polarities in how computer-mediated materials are experienced and the larger impacts of technology on clients, therapists, and the therapeutic encounter were exposed. New media have brought constant contradiction in characterization just as all previous technologies have reflected responses from unease to adaptation. Some key questions in the research are how digitized materials are being used in art therapy and by whom and when? Related questions are what effects can these materials have for clients and what learning, interests, and media adaptations have …

Background: While next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies are rapidly advancing, an area that lags behind is the development of efficient and user-friendly tools for preliminary analysis of massive NGS data. As an effort to fill this gap to keep up with the fast pace of technological advancement and to accelerate data-to-results turnaround, we developed a novel software package named SeqAssist ("Sequencing Assistant" or SA).
Results: SeqAssist takes NGS-generated FASTQ files as the input, employs the BWA-MEM aligner for sequence alignment, and aims to provide a quick overview and basic statistics of NGS data. It consists of three separate workflows: …

Tall fescue pastures cover extensive acreage in the eastern half of the United States and contribute to important ecosystem services, including the provisioning of forage for grazing livestock. Yet little is known concerning how these pastures will respond to climate change. Tall fescue's ability to persist and provide forage under a warmer and wetter environment, as is predicted for much of this region as a result of climate change, will likely depend on a symbiotic relationship the plant can form with the fungal endophyte, Epichloë coenophiala. While this symbiosis can confer environmental stress tolerance to the plant, the endophyte …

(En)Gendering Basque Culture: Musical Notes From The Archives, Begoña Echeverria
(En)Gendering Basque Culture: Musical Notes From The Archives, Begoña Echeverria
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
Drawing on folksongs written since the 16th century, I show women and girls in Basque song exhibit more agency and a wider variety of emotional stances than the secondary, “traditional” roles usually ascribed them. They negotiate potential mates; drink instead of work; and seek the pleasure of men other than their husbands. While the meanings of these songs are multi-vocal and sometimes difficult to discern, I argue that deliberation over these songs’ meanings enriches our understanding of Basque culture and the role of song in producing and contesting it.

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) affects more than 2% of the population in the United States, and is the most common cause of chronic mitral valve regurgitation (MVR) in developed countries. It is estimated that MVP affects more than 150 million people worldwide. When left untreated, MVP can lead to severe MVR resulting in a myriad of cardiac complications. The mortality rate of MVP patients with severe MVR is over 6% per year. Despite clinical significance, there remains a lack of medical therapies for MVP, with surgical intervention being the most effective treatment to date. Therefore, understanding normal heart valve development, …

Joseph Carroll: “The Truth About Fiction: Biological Reality And Imaginary Lives” And "“The Historical Position Of Literary Darwinism", Joseph Carroll
Authenticity 2014-2015
Joseph Carroll is a founding figure in evolutionary literary study. His book Evolution and Literary Theory, published in 1995, was the first book-length work in the field. His 2004 collection of essays, Literary Darwinism, gave the field the name by which it is most commonly known. Literary Darwinists are animated by a conviction that the human species has evolved in adaptive relation to a physical world, that human bodies and brains contain complex adaptive structures, and that the products of the literary imagination are shaped by biologically grounded motives, passions, and forms of cognition. Carroll’s more recent publications include a …

Focal Cortical Thickness Correlates Of Exceptional Memory Training In Vedic Priests, Giridhar P. Kalamangalam, Timothy M. Ellmore
Publications and Research
The capacity for semantic memory—the ability to acquire and store knowledge of the world—is highly developed in the human brain. In particular, semantic memory assimilated through an auditory route may be a uniquely human capacity. One method of obtaining neurobiological insight into memory mechanisms is through the study of experts. In this work, we study a group of Hindu Vedic priests, whose religious training requires the memorization of vast tracts of scriptural texts through an oral tradition, recalled spontaneously during a lifetime of subsequent spiritual practice. We demonstrate focal increases of cortical thickness in regions of the left prefrontal lobe …

Factors Influencing Reproductive Success Of Ferruginous Hawks In The Uintah Basin, Utah, Heather L. Keough, Michael R. Conover, Anthony J. Roberts
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
We examined factors that potentially influenced reproductive success in Ferruginous Hawks (Buteo regalis) in the Uintah Basin, Utah, and determined whether oil and gas well development was one of those factors. For three breeding seasons (2002–2004), we measured the number of nestlings, fledglings, and dispersed young that were produced by pairs of Ferruginous Hawks nesting within 2365 km2 managed by the Bureau of Land Management. We hypothesized that reproductive success would be influenced by nesting substrate, abundance of prey, distance to the closest occupied raptor nest, and distance to the closest active well. Although the Uintah Basin experienced a drought …

Nutrition And Prevention Of Alzheimer's Dementia, Arun Swaminathan, Gregory A. Jicha
Neurology Faculty Publications
A nutritional approach to prevent, slow, or halt the progression of disease is a promising strategy that has been widely investigated. Much epidemiologic data suggests that nutritional intake may influence the development and progression of Alzheimer’s dementia (AD). Modifiable, environmental causes of AD include potential metabolic derangements caused by dietary insufficiency and or excess that may be corrected by nutritional supplementation and or dietary modification. Many nutritional supplements contain a myriad of health promoting constituents (anti-oxidants, vitamins, trace minerals, flavonoids, lipids, …etc.) that may have novel mechanisms of action affecting cellular health and regeneration, the aging process itself, or may …

The Cavefish Genome Reveals Candidate Genes For Eye Loss, Suzanne E. Mcgaugh, Joshua B. Gross, Bronwen Aken
KIP Articles
Natural populations subjected to strong environmental selection pressures offer a window into the genetic underpinnings of evolutionary change. Cavefish populations, Astyanax mexicanus (Teleostei: Characiphysi), exhibit repeated, independent evolution for a variety of traits including eye degeneration, pigment loss, increased size and number of taste buds and mechanosensory organs, and shifts in many behavioural traits. Surface and cave forms are interfertile making this system amenable to genetic interrogation; however, lack of a reference genome has hampered efforts to identify genes responsible for changes in cave forms of A. mexicanus. Here we present the first de novo genome assembly for Astyanax mexicanus …
Mood Watcher: Interactive Visual Guide To Increasing Awareness Of Mood Disorders, Ziyan Han
Mood Watcher: Interactive Visual Guide To Increasing Awareness Of Mood Disorders, Ziyan Han
Theses
Mood disorders are the extremely negative situations of mood that cause dysfunction in people's lives. There are a number of guides currently on the market (E.g., mood disorder self-help books, websites...) to help people with this problem, but their content is usually not customized enough to deal with each user's particular situation. In addition, the formats include content that is often text-dense and overwhelming. While there are great resources of personal mood disorder tests, suggested actions, and information about professional help, there is an opportunity to create a guide that connects these resources with a better designed format so that …
