You Are What You (M)Eat: Explorations Of Meat-Eating, Masculinity And Masquerade, Amy Calvert Oct 2014

You Are What You (M)Eat: Explorations Of Meat-Eating, Masculinity And Masquerade, Amy Calvert

Journal of International Women's Studies

Food consumption is frequently linked to identity and to who we are as individuals, which I explore through the analysis of the US reality television series Man V. Food. Through close readings of various scenes, I look at representations of hegemonic masculine performance, and the sexualisation of women and meat. In light of my analysis, I argue that the show is both post-feminist and part of a wider backlash against feminist action. Man V. Food is analysed in consideration of the wider phenomena of masculine crisis and backlash against various social movements, specifically recent feminist and vegetarian/vegan movements. This …

The Promise Of The Digital Humanities And The Contested Nature Of Digital Scholarship, William G. Thomas Iii Oct 2014

The Promise Of The Digital Humanities And The Contested Nature Of Digital Scholarship, William G. Thomas Iii

Department of History: Faculty Publications

This essay examines the contested qualities of digital scholarship and why, paradoxically, the twenty-year surge in the digital humanities--from 1993 to 2013--has produced relatively little interpretive or argumentative scholarship. In this first phase of the digital humanities, scholars produced innovative and sophisticated hybrid works of scholarship, blending archives, tools, commentaries, data collections, and visualizations. For the most part in the disciplines, however, few of these works have been reviewed or critiqued. Because the disciplines expect interpretation, argument, and criticism, it could be argued that digital humanists have not produced enough digital interpretive scholarship and what we have produced has not …

Using Multi-Compartment Ensemble Modeling As An Investigative Tool Of Spatially Distributed Biophysical Balances: Application To Hippocampal Oriens-Lacunosum/Moleculare (O-Lm) Cellns, Vladislav Sekulic, J. Josh Lawrence, Frances K. Skinner Oct 2014

Using Multi-Compartment Ensemble Modeling As An Investigative Tool Of Spatially Distributed Biophysical Balances: Application To Hippocampal Oriens-Lacunosum/Moleculare (O-Lm) Cellns, Vladislav Sekulic, J. Josh Lawrence, Frances K. Skinner

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Multi-compartmental models of neurons provide insight into the complex, integrative properties of dendrites. Because it is not feasible to experimentally determine the exact density and kinetics of each channel type in every neuronal compartment, an essential goal in developing models is to help characterize these properties. To address biological variability inherent in a given neuronal type, there has been a shift away from using hand-tuned models towards using ensembles or populations of models. In collectively capturing a neuron’s output, ensemble modeling approaches uncover important conductance balances that control neuronal dynamics. However, conductances are never entirely known for a given neuron …

The Health Advantage Of A Vegan Diet: Exploring The Gut Microbiota Connection, Marian Glick-Bauer, Ming-Chin Yeh Oct 2014

The Health Advantage Of A Vegan Diet: Exploring The Gut Microbiota Connection, Marian Glick-Bauer, Ming-Chin Yeh

Publications and Research

This review examines whether there is evidence that a strict vegan diet confers health advantages beyond that of a vegetarian diet or overall healthy eating. Few studies include vegan subjects as a distinct experimental group, yet when vegan diets are directly compared to vegetarian and omnivorous diets, a pattern of protective health benefits emerges. The relatively recent inclusion of vegan diets in studies of gut microbiota and health allows us the opportunity to assess whether the vegan gut microbiota is distinct, and whether the health advantages characteristic of a vegan diet may be partially explained by the associated microbiota profile. …

Nurturing Salafi Manhaj; A Study Of Salafi Pesantrens In Contemporary Indonesia, Din Wahid

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This study is about the role of Salafi pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools) in Salafi da'wa (conveying or inviting to the way of Islam) in Indonesia. A Salafi pesantren is a pesantren that teaches Salafism which mostly derives from the works of Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab, the founder of Wahhabism in Saudi Arabia. Salafi pesantrens started to emerge in the late 1980s and were established by graduates from Saudi Arabia and Yemen universities, and supported by alumni of the Institute for the Study of Islam and Arabic (LIPIA) in Jakarta. While the precise number of Salafi pesantrens is unavailable, it is …

Mouse Hepatitis Virus Infection Upregulates Genes Involved In Innate Immune Responses., Dhriti Chatterjee, Sankar Addya, Reas S Khan, Lawrence C. Kenyon, Alexander Choe, Randall J Cohrs, Kenneth S Shindler, Jayasri Das Sarma

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Neurotropic recombinant strain of Mouse Hepatitis Virus, RSA59, induces meningo-encephalitis, myelitis and demyelination following intracranial inoculation. RSA59 induced neuropathology is partially caused by activation of CNS resident microglia, as demonstrated by changes in cellular morphology and increased expression of a microglia/macrophage specific calcium ion binding factor, Iba1. Affymetrix Microarray analysis for mRNA expression data reveals expression of inflammatory mediators that are known to be released by activated microglia. Microglia-specific cell surface molecules, including CD11b, CD74, CD52 and CD68, are significantly upregulated in contrast to CD4, CD8 and CD19. Protein analysis of spinal cord extracts taken from mice 6 days post-inoculation, …

The purpose of this program evaluation was to utilize short- and long-term surveys to measure the impact of a multi-state Range Beef Cow Symposium on knowledge change and changes in beef cattle production practices. Symposium participants completed end-of-session surveys and ranked their degree of knowledge change, with a 36% return rate. Follow-up surveys were mailed to past symposium participants who noted changes made to their production practices, with a 23% return rate. For symposium survey respondents, 70% were male, a majority were white, over 60% were under 50 years, and they represented 16 states. The estimated annual increase in profitability …

Deconstructing The Rhetoric Of Fear In Post 9/11 Young Adult Literature, Ronald Dean Straight Oct 2014

Deconstructing The Rhetoric Of Fear In Post 9/11 Young Adult Literature, Ronald Dean Straight

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study demonstrates how M.T. Anderson's "Feed" (2002), Scott Westerfeld's "Uglies" (2006), and Veronica Roth's "Divergent" (2011) offer young adult readers alternative messages through tropes and rhetorical devices within a mediated reality. The outcome of these messages offers mixed messages about rebellion and conformity to young adults living in a post 9/11 global community. The development of this message begins with teens in "Feed" exploring a dystopian future where society is tied together through technology that eliminates boundaries. The teens within the story explore a world, for a week, where those boundaries are reestablished due to an act of terror, …

Research Papers

The NCAA Division I Manual is a very black-and-white ruling system that can easily be misunderstood or misinterpreted. To help increase understanding and illustrate some of the rules, this video project was created to cover four of the topics within the manual. The goal of the project was to present to administrators, coaches, and student-athletes at Division I institutions, some of the NCAA rules in a new, creative manner that helps understanding and retention of some of the current NCAA policies. The videos cover four topics: the safety exception, prospect visits, sports wagering, and social media. Each video covers some …

Is Ancestor Veneration The Most Universal Of All World Religions? A Critique Of Modernist Cosmological Bias, Thomas Reuter Oct 2014

Is Ancestor Veneration The Most Universal Of All World Religions? A Critique Of Modernist Cosmological Bias, Thomas Reuter

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Research by anthropologists engaged with the Comparative Austronesia Project (Australian National University) has amassed an enormous data set for ethnological comparison between the religions of Austronesian-speaking societies, a language group to which nearly all Indonesian societies also belong. Comparative analysis reveals that ancestor veneration is a key-shared feature among "Austronesian" religious cosmologies; a feature that also resonates strongly with the ancestor-focused religions characteristic of East Asia. Characteristically, the religions of Austronesian-speaking societies focus on the core idea of a sacred time and place of ancestral origin and the continuous flow of life that is issuing forth from this source. Present-day …

Pragmatism, Identity, And The State; How The Nuaulu Of Seram Have Reinvented Their Beliefs And Practices As "Religion", Roy Ellen

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Dutch colonial state categorized animists and ancestor-worshippers and inscribed them into written records in ways that have had long-term effects. The immediate post-independence period in Maluku, despite early political turmoil, settled down to a kind of stability under the New Order, the paradoxical outcome of which was both gradual integration of Nuaulu into a wider political and cultural consensus and conditions favouring economic change that undermined that consensus. The new policies of reformasi after 1998 presented further opportunities for Nuaulu to engage with the state in ways that promoted their interests. The opportunities were short-lived, however, given the implosive …

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Dal 'il al-n shid 'an a k m al-wal 'im f -l-mas jid (Arguments of the Seeker for Legal Judgements concerning Festive Meals in Mosques) is a short tract, written in 1938 in Malay in Arabic script by Ya y b. 'Uthm n b. 'AbdAll h, none other than a son of the renowned Batavian muft Sayyid 'Uthm n (1822-1914). Protesting against the (in his view) bid'a (unauthorized religious innovation) () of organizing festive meals in mosques, he felt it his duty to try to stop his co-religionists from doing wrong. Not being a theologian himself, his pamphlet is …

Applicator Exposure To Glycol Derivatives And Total Volatile Organic Compounds During The Application Of Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation, Michael Brian Kaniuga Oct 2014

Applicator Exposure To Glycol Derivatives And Total Volatile Organic Compounds During The Application Of Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation, Michael Brian Kaniuga

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is currently high demand for new building materials which are considered "environmentally friendly" or "green" for both new construction and renovations. Spray polyurethane foam (SPUF) insulation has gained significant acceptance by both consumers and the construction industry due to its high R-value, which results into significant energy savings among other things. Despite its acceptance by consumers and the construction industry, consideration must be given to potential chemical exposures to applicators installing these products.

This study sought to determine, through quantitative experimentation, if there was a release of glycol derivatives including, diethylene glycol (DEG), ethylene glycol (EG), and propylene glycol …

Building Sustainable Leadership In Multicultural South African Catholic Schools, Mark Potterton, Cullen Mackenzie Oct 2014

Building Sustainable Leadership In Multicultural South African Catholic Schools, Mark Potterton, Cullen Mackenzie

eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia

The article summarises an innovative approach taken to develop school leaders in multicultural South African Catholic schools by the Catholic Institute of Education. The reported program is built on the idea that leadership and administration are essentially moral activities and that teaching and educational leadership must have a moral purpose. The article recognises that with the current malaise in schooling in South Africa, there is a need for strong, inspiring leadership that is able to bring about systemic change by talking to the ‘minds and hearts’ of people. One of the most notable results of the program has been that …

Reading A Quaker's Book: Elizabeth Ashbridge's Testimony Of Quaker Literary Theory, Michele L. Tarter Oct 2014

Reading A Quaker's Book: Elizabeth Ashbridge's Testimony Of Quaker Literary Theory, Michele L. Tarter

Quaker Studies

Elizabeth Ash bridge offers one of the most striking transatlantic spiritual autobiographies of the eighteenth century. While historians and scholars alike have given careful attention to this now-canonical text, no one to date has yet positioned this narrative in the context of the transatlantic Friends' unique literary traditions. Turning to the first generation of Friends, who also cal led themselves 'The Publishers of Truth' , this essay explores the Quakers' mystical relationship to language, prophecy and writing, and their subsequent creation of a New Word. I trace how the Friends created their own literary theory, locating the written word as …

Family Memory, Religion And Radicalism: The Priestman, Bright And Clark Kinship Circle Of Women Friends And Quaker History, Sandra Stanley Holton Oct 2014

Family Memory, Religion And Radicalism: The Priestman, Bright And Clark Kinship Circle Of Women Friends And Quaker History, Sandra Stanley Holton

Quaker Studies

In the nineteenth century, women Friends frequently preserved private family papers - spiritual memoranda, letters, diaries, photograph albums, household accounts, visitors books and so on. One such collection holds the personal papers of women in, among others, the Bragg, Priestman, Bright, and Clark families, who lived during this period mainly in the regions of Newcastle, Manchester and Bristol. Such material allows an exploration of the domestic culture shared among these families and, in particul ar, the legacy of family memory preser ved among this collection. A significant part of that legacy, it is argued, was the various representations of womanliness …

Choose Life! Early Quaker Women And Violence In Modernity, Grace M. Jantzen Oct 2014

Choose Life! Early Quaker Women And Violence In Modernity, Grace M. Jantzen

Quaker Studies

The peace testimony of the early Quakers was developed in a context where war, killing and death were a major preoccupation. In this article I show how Margaret Fell and other early Quaker women encouraged a choice of life rather than a preoccupation with death. While both women and men Friends developed the peace testimony, in the case of the men, the language of war (albeit the 'Lamb's War') was retained, while many women (though not all) looked for language that was more nurturing and less violent. I suggest that it is the radical choice of life, not just the …
