Effect Of Land Cover On Biodiversity And Composition Of A Soil Macrofauna Community In A Reclaimed Coastal Area At Yancheng, China, Baoming Ge, Daizhen Zhang, Boping Tang, Chunlin Zhou
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Reclamation was considered the primary factor that caused coastal wetland loss in China. Along with land conversion, there were different types of land cover on the reclaimed coast. In early March 2012, we selected 5 habitats with different land cover from a reclaimed coastal area at Yancheng City that was diked about 30 years before, and the biodiversity and composition variations in soil macrofauna communities were studied. We found that higher biodiversity values appeared in the uncultivated land, the poplar forest, and the metasequoia forest, while lower values occurred in the wheat farm and bulrush land. By multivariate statistical analysis, …

Competition For Food Between The Markhor And Domestic Goat In Chitral, Pakistan, Nasra Ashraf, Maqsood Anwar, Iftikhar Hussain, Muhammad Ali Nawaz
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The markhor (Capra falconeri) is endangered globally as well as in Pakistan. The Chitral district in Pakistan supports one of the largest populations of this species. The rural communities of the district have large holdings of livestock, which make up a significant part of their livelihood system. The domestic goat is the dominant livestock species, and a potential competitor with the markhor due to habitat overlap. The present study was conducted to examine the extent of food competition between the markhor and domestic goat in Chitral. A total of 120 pellets of the 2 species were collected during the spring …

Is The Subfamily Eriosomatinae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Monophyletic?, Xingyi Li, Liyun Jiang, Gexia Qiao
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Eriosomatinae, the gall-forming aphid subfamily, traditionally consists of 3 tribes, Eriosomatini, Pemphigini, and Fordini. However, the phylogenetic relationships among these tribes remain controversial, which has made it difficult to conduct further investigation regarding the evolution of galls and host alternations in this group. We analyzed the molecular phylogeny of the subfamily Eriosomatinae, combining sequences from 2 mitochondrial genes (COI and COII) and 2 nuclear genes (EF-1\alpha and LWO). The reconstructions were implemented based on single-gene and multigene datasets through 3 different reconstructing algorithms, respectively; analyses with 5 different out-groups were also conducted. Results revealed a large paraphyletic clade, in which …

Birds And Small Urban Parks: A Study In A High Plateau City, Salvador Peris, Tinguaro Montelongo
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The goal of the present study was to assess which variables influence the distribution of birds in urban parks. Twenty parks were studied in a city on the Spanish high plateau during the breeding season, and relationships among park characteristics, bird richness, and individual bird presences were established. The park area and tree cover accounted for 73.1% of the variation in bird richness. Although area size was the best predictor of species richness (65% of the variation), some species did not seem to be related to this variable but rather to others, such as vegetation and the degree of park …

Morphological Differentiation Among Species Of The Genus Mugil Linnaeus, 1758 (Mugilidae) From Côte D'Ivoire, Kouakou Theodore Konan, Abouo Beatrice Adepo-Gourene, Koffi Mexmin Konan, Germain Gourene
Turkish Journal of Zoology
A study on the morphological diversity of the genus Mugil of the lagoons Ebrié and Grand-Lahou was carried out in order to differentiate species of Mugilidae in Côte d'Ivoire. Univariate and multivariate analyses of 40 metric and 11 meristic characters identified 3 homogeneous groups. This phenotypic plasticity within the genus Mugil allowed differentiating the species Mugil curema, M. bananensis, and M. cephalus. Contrary to the overlap presented by the metric parameters, meristic characters, in this case the number of branchiospines on the superior and inferior parts and the number of microbranchiospines on the first branchial arch, were very clearly discriminating …

The Response Of Eurasian Kestrel Falco Tinnunculus To Falconry At Deblin Military Airfield, East Poland, Ignacy Kitowski
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Birds, including kestrels, constitute a serious impediment to air traffic and are considered pests when they disrupt aviation operations. This study investigated the behaviour of kestrels at Deblin Military Airfield (eastern Poland) in response to bird strike risk management by means of falconry. Trained raptors changed the behaviour of kestrels. During the period when trained raptors worked at the airfield, kestrels were less often found there compared to the control period. During falconry sessions, kestrels perched less often compared to the control period. Kestrels also hovered less during falconry sessions compared to the control period. Falconry reduced the risk of …

Effects Of Salinity Tolerances On Survival And Life History Of 2 Cladocerans, Di̇dem Gökçe, Duygu Özhan Turhan
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Salinity alterations in freshwater ecosystems greatly affect the survival and life history of zooplankton and, therefore, have an effect on higher trophic levels. Salinity is an essential and critical factor in determining the presence, dominance, and succession of organisms. After being collected in the field, Scapholeberis mucronata and Simocephalus vetulus were brought to the laboratory in water. Under laboratory conditions (24 ± 1 °C; 16:8 h photoperiod), we evaluated the effect of different salt concentrations on the neonates. The LC_{50} values were determined at different halotolerance levels for S. mucronata (0.375 g L^{-1}) and S. vetulus (0.250 g L^{-1}). Results …

The Tubificids (Annelida, Oligochaeta) Of Lake Trasimeno And Lake Piediluco In Central Italy, With A Study Of Sem Morphology Of Some Species, Enzo Goretti, Caterina Marcucci, Alessandra Di Veroli, Angelisa Fabrizi, Elda Gaino
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Freshwater oligochaetes are studied worldwide because of their relevance as bioindicators in aquatic ecosystems. Nevertheless, species identification is still difficult because it is mainly based on the male reproductive system. The morphology of the chaetae offers an additional set of characters and the fine organization of these elements can help in solving crucial aspects allowing specific attribution. In spite of this, somatic chaetae are poorly investigated under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A SEM analysis of the chaetae has been carried out on the tubificids Branchiura sowerbyi, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, Tubifex tubifex, and Psammoryctides barbatus from Trasimeno and Piediluco lakes (Central Italy). …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
Although there have been several studies based on the molecular data of green toads, some ambiguities related to the systematics of these toads in Turkey still remain. Thus, we used combined mitochondrial genes (D-loop and 12S ribosomal RNA) to resolve these taxonomic problems. We also applied demographic analysis to elucidate the evolutionary history using these genes. We found 3 haplotype groups: 1 for Bufo viridis and 2 lineages for Bufotes variabilis, with only the latter represented in Turkey. This study showed a genetic diversity within Anatolian B. variabilis. Population genetic analysis of mismatch distributions, Tajima's D-statistic, and Fu's Fs test …
