Staphylococcus Aureus Growth And Enterotoxin Production In Italian Caciotta Cheese, Francesca Pedonese, Carlo D'Ascenzi, Beatrice Torracca, Clizia Zingoni, Barbara Turchi, Filippo Fratini, Roberta Nuvoloni
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
To evaluate growth and enterotoxin production of Staphylococcus aureus in raw milk caciotta, an Italian soft cheese, experimental cheesemaking trials were carried out with and without a commercial starter. Two different inocula of selected enterotoxin-producing S. aureus strains were tested: high (mean value 5.03 log CFU/mL of milk) and low (mean value 3.22 log CFU/mL of milk). Uninoculated cheeses with milk containing 2.15 log CFU/mL mean value of coagulase-positive staphylococci were also examined. With higher inocul a coagulase-positive staphylococci counts reached 7.57 log CFU/g without starter and had significantly higher values after the acidification phase than those with starter (below …

Folate And Homocysteine Metabolisms And Their Roles In The Biochemical Basis Of Neuropsychiatry, Alpaslan Coşar, Osman Meti̇n İpci̇oğlu, Ömer Özcan, Mustafa Gültepe
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The term 'one-carbon metabolism' is commonly used to describe 3 separate metabolic processes: folate metabolism, the homocysteine remethylation cycle, and the transsulfuration pathway. Folate metabolism concerns the biochemical reactions in which endogenous and exogenous one-carbon units are transferred to tetrahydrofolates. The remethylation cycle is used for the synthesis of methionine from homocysteine with one-carbon units that come from folate. This methionine is then used for the synthesis of S-adenosyl methionine, which is a general donor of methyl groups for many biochemical reactions in the human body. In the transsulfuration pathway, some amino acids and polypeptides, such as cystathionine, cysteine, and …

The Effect Of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid In A Mouse Model Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Rosalind Chaffee
The Effect Of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid In A Mouse Model Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Rosalind Chaffee
All Master's Theses
The goals of the experiment presented in this thesis were threefold. The primary goal was to construct a mouse model of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from an existing rat model that utilizes predator scent exposure as a traumatic event that then triggers changes in anxiety-like behavior. The second goal of the experiment was to study the rate of occurrence of PTSD in female and male mice to determine whether the model would mirror the higher rate of PTSD observed in women. Finally, the role of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) as a protective element in biological susceptibility to PTSD was assessed via …

The Use Of Dna Sequencing To Discover Novel Pathogens Of Aquatic Invertebrates With Focus On Mosquitoes (Culicidae), Dale Robert Jansons
All Master's Theses
The use of DNA sequencing to discover fungal pathogens of aquatic invertebrates, including mosquito larvae, was explored. Mosquito-borne diseases kill millions of people every year, mostly children. One method used to control the spread of mosquito-borne diseases has been to use mosquito-killing fungi to reduce mosquito populations. Locating and identifying pathogens of mosquitoes can be difficult, but with phylum specific primers, novel pathogens can be found, identified, and compared to known isolates without rearing mosquitoes, setting baited traps for pathogens, or culturing microbes associated with mosquito larvae. Mosquito larvae and other aquatic invertebrates were subjected to PCR and DNA sequencing …

Punishment-Free Toilet Training For Children With Autism: Silent Urine Alarms, Joy Mayer Gulseth
All Master's Theses
The current study aimed to examine the effects of punishment-free toilet training procedures on successful toilet training in two children with autism. The participants had no previous experience with any toilet-training procedures. This study employed the use of scheduled sits, positive reinforcement for sitting and for successful in-toilet urinations, and use of silent urine alarms that signal accidents to parents or caregivers, but not to the child. Toilet-training procedures were conducted across the participant's home and school settings by the principal investigator, research associates, parents, and teachers. One participant made significant progress toward becoming toilet-trained. The other failed to show …

Creating New Fairytales: Statoil, Snøhvit, And Petroleum Exploration In The Arctic, Melissa Gjellstad
Languages & Global Studies Faculty Publications
This paper investigates the valorization of the process of oil extraction in the High North as exemplified in corporate films and marketing materials produced by Statoil, a global energy company based in Norway. In focus is the subsea instillation of Snøhvit [Snow White] in the Barents Sea, an innovation on the frontier of the energy industry in the Arctic. In dialogue with Stephanie Le Menager’s “feeling ecological” theory and work with petromodernity, this article analyzes Statoil’s discourse in landscape, oil capitalism, and ecology to offer an interpretation of the evolution of the subsea extraction narratives in the Arctic waters as …
Latin@S, Disrupting Racial Normativity In Derrick Bell's The Space Traders, Geiza Vargas-Vargas
Latin@S, Disrupting Racial Normativity In Derrick Bell's The Space Traders, Geiza Vargas-Vargas
Western New England Law Review
In this Essay tribute to Professor Bell, the Author chooses to examine the ever-controversial science fiction narrative, The Space Traders, for its paradox. In one instance, The Space Traders is arguably a myopic representation of race insofar as it operates within a very specific theoretical race construct, the Black/White binary. But almost at once, in another instance, the paradox seems to precisely capture the truth of racial experience: we all are reduced to and defined by the Black/White binary.
For Professor Bell, as a critical race theorist, race is located strictly within the binary. But experience, for those that …

Cellular Processes Regulating Cytoskeletal Signaling, Insulin Resistance And Calcium Signaling Are Commonly Misregulated In Type 1 And Type 2 Myotonic Dystrophy Patients, Nripesh Prasad
Dissertations
Myotonic dystrophy (DM) is a mutisystemic neurological disorder with an autosomal dominant inheritance involving skeletal and cardiac muscles. There are two different types of DM identified; type1 myotonic dystrophy (DM1) and type2 myotonic dystrophy (DM2). In this study I undertook an intense unbiased investigative approach by profiling the global mRNA, miRNA and protein expression landscape in skeletal muscle biopsies from DM1 and DM2 patients. I also compared the mRNA expression of three transgenic mouse models (DM2-KI, HSA-CTG and HSA-CCTG) with human DM patient muscle biopsy samples. My novel integrated comparative analysis strategy revealed widespread mRNA and miRNA misregulation in DM …

(2014) Dialogic Schooling, David K. Kennedy
Collected Papers of David Kennedy
This paper offers a genealogy of dialogic education, tracing its origins in Romantic epistemology and corresponding philosophy of childhood, and identifying it as a counterpoint to the purposes and assumptions of universal, compulsory, state-imposed and regulated schooling. Dialogic education has historically worked against the grain of standardized mass education, not only in its view of the nature, capacities and potentialities of children (and therefore of adults as well), but in its economic, political and social views, for which childhood is understood as a promissory condition. Dialogic education is oriented to what Dewey called “a future new society of changed purposes …

Winner And Loser Effects In Major League Baseball Double Headers, Andrew C. Gallup, Omar T. Eldakar
Winner And Loser Effects In Major League Baseball Double Headers, Andrew C. Gallup, Omar T. Eldakar
Biology Faculty Articles
Across the animal kingdom it has been observed that outcomes of conflicts are influenced by past experiences, whereby previous winners are likely to keep winning and losers are likely to lose again. These so-called “winner and loser effects” are hypothesized to result from factors such as information acquisition and endocrine responses following the initial bouts. This paper applies the understanding of this phenomenon to a novel domain: patterns of winning and losing in Major League Baseball (MLB) double headers. By accessing archival data available from www.espn.com, we report on the incidence of a single team winning both games (sweeps) versus …
