Tracing Human-Ai Relations: A Participatory Approach To Genai Integration In Creative Public Service Work, Sanna Marttila, Louise Harder Fischer, Sunniva Sandbukt

ServDes Conference Series

This paper examines a participatory process for integrating Generative AI (GenAI) into the creative work of a public service organization. Through this process, we gain insights into the complexities of human-AI relations, the evolving nature of creative work, and the conditions necessary for meaningful AI integration in service organizations. The paper makes two key contributions: it documents a case of participatory GenAI integration in a public service setting, and it explores implications for creative practice and the evolving role of human-AI collaboration. Findings highlight the importance of reflection, value-driven AI integration, and the need for facilitated spaces for critical reflection. …

Bat Observation During A Solar Eclipse In Georgia, Dalton C. Brantley, Graham B. Moore, Catherine H. Borer

Georgia Journal of Science

Eclipses are astronomical phenomena that occur infrequently enough, either spatially or temporally, that for most animals, experiencing an eclipse may only happen once in a lifetime. Thus, an eclipse can provide a unique combination of meteorological and environmental conditions, through which animal behavior can be evaluated. In this study we observed and documented bat behavior (order Chiroptera) in northwest Georgia during a partial solar eclipse in 2024. Using passive acoustic monitors at locations recognized as high quality bat habitat, we detected a single hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus) 5 minutes before the solar eclipse peak. The bat was first …

Food and Animal Sciences Faculty Research

This study evaluated the antibacterial efficacy and growth-promoting potential of Moringa oleifera and Thymus vulgaris methanolic extracts in broiler chickens challenged with Escherichia coli O78. In vitro antibacterial screening using agar well diffusion and disc diffusion assays revealed that ciprofloxacin exhibited the strongest inhibitory effect, followed by tetracycline and enrofloxacin, whereas among plant extracts, T. vulgaris was more effective than M. oleifera. The optimal combination (M100T150; 100 mg M. oleifera + 150 mg T. vulgaris) produced the largest inhibition zones against E. coli strains. For the in vivo trial, 540 Ross-308 broiler chicks were distributed into six treatment groups in …

Climate Change: The World In Uncharted Waters – Exploring The Nexus Of Human-Rights Based Legal Instruments And Climate Change, Emma V. Wilson Oct 2025

Climate Change: The World In Uncharted Waters – Exploring The Nexus Of Human-Rights Based Legal Instruments And Climate Change, Emma V. Wilson

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The framework of human rights is based on a “fundamental and irrevoca- ble belief in the dignity and worth of every individual.”! While many differ- ent channels have emerged for protecting human rights in the face of global climate change, there is still significant room for improvement. For decades, there was no formal recognition of human-centered environmental rights.? The recent United Nations General Assembly (“UNGA”) acknowledgement of a right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment is a tool that can “facilitate the reconceptualization of human rights law to better adapt to the negative impacts of climate change.” It represents …

Apoe-Calypse Tau: Apoe-Tau Synergy In Alzheimer's Disease, Matthew Paul Lennol, Chiara Bordier, Léana Kamelher, Jason D Ulrich, David M Holtzman, Maud Gratuze

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) in senile plaques and abnormally hyperphosphorylated tau proteins in neurofibrillary tangles. While much of the research has focused on Aβ, tau-mediated neurodegeneration is more closely associated with synaptic loss and cognitive decline in AD, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of tau pathology. In this context, the interaction between tau and APOE, particularly the main genetic risk factor for AD APOE ε4, remains underexplored. APOE encodes apolipoprotein E (apoE), a protein important in lipid metabolism. In addition to promoting Aβ deposition, emerging …

Consciousness Below Scuba Depths, Michael Vecchione

Animal Sentience

Abstract: Jennifer Mather has nicely summarized what is known about consciousness in shallow water octopods as well as what is known about shallow water squids and cuttlefish. However, once she gets below SCUBA depths, she misses out on most of cephalopod diversity. I have attempted to add this aspect and perhaps some evolutionary biology to this target article.

Perceptions Of Whole Plant-Based Diets And Weight Among Hispanics In Miami, Florida, Zoraida Powell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Being overweight or obese poses major public health concerns and contributes to the development of chronic illnesses. While researchers have explored how a total plant-based diet impacts excess body weight or obesity, there is still a lack of clarity about how Hispanics living in Miami, FL, perceive or understand this diet concerning overweight and obesity. Using a generic qualitative approach, this study was conducted on how Hispanics in Miami, FL, understand and view a whole plant-based diet (WPBD) for preventing and reducing overweight and obesity. Through interviews with 14 diverse Hispanic participants, the study revealed that they see WPBD as …

The mechanisms governing mammalian proton pump V-ATPase function are of fundamental and medical interest. The assembly and disassembly of cytoplasmic V1 domain with the membrane-embedded V0 domain of V-ATPase is a key aspect of V-ATPase localization and function. Here, we show that the mammalian protein ATG16L1, primarily appreciated for its role in canonical autophagy and in noncanonical membrane atg8ylation processes, controls V-ATPase. ATG16L1 knockout elevated V-ATPase activity, increased V1 presence on endomembranes, and increased the number of acidified intracellular compartments. ATG16L1's ability to efficiently bind V-ATPase was required for its inhibitory role in endolysosomal acidification and for control of Mycobacterium …

TFEB, a master regulator of autophagy and lysosomal biogenesis, is activated by several cellular stresses including lysosomal damage, but its underlying mechanism is unclear. TFEB activation during lysosomal damage depends on the ATG conjugation system, which mediates lipidation of ATG8 proteins. Here, we newly identify ATG conjugation-independent TFEB regulation that precedes ATG conjugation-dependent regulation, designated Modes I and II, respectively. We reveal unique regulators of TFEB in each mode: APEX1 in Mode I and CCT7 and/or TRIP6 in Mode II. APEX1 interacts with TFEB independently of the ATG conjugation system, and is required for TFEB stability, while both CCT7 and …

Engagement By Design: Belongingness, Cultural Value Orientations, And Pathways Into Emerging Technologies, Daisuke Akiba, Michael Perrone, Caterina Almendral, Rebecca Garte

Publications and Research

This theoretical article examines how belongingness, defined as the sense that one’s participation is legitimate and valued, interacts with cultural value orientations to help explain persistent disparities in U.S. technology engagement, including emerging technologies, across racial and ethnic groups. While structural barriers (e.g., racism, poverty, linguistic bias, etc.) remain essential to understanding such inequity, we argue that engagement patterns in technology also reflect how different cultural communities may define and experience belongingness in relation to digital domains. Drawing on Triandis and Gelfand’s framework, and focusing specifically on educational contexts, we propose the Belongingness through Cultural Value Alignment (BCVA) model, whereby …

What On Earth Is A Burden On Interstate Commerce?, Andrew Jordan Oct 2025

What On Earth Is A Burden On Interstate Commerce?, Andrew Jordan

Northwestern University Law Review

What is a burden on interstate commerce? That’s an important question under the Dormant Commerce Clause’s Pike balancing test. But it’s a question whose answer has proven elusive. This shouldn’t be a surprise. After all, states disagree about what counts as a burden or a benefit, and how much weight each has. And there aren’t any obvious constitutional principles we can point to for resolving those disagreements. Recently, some scholars have tried to ground dormant commerce doctrine in economic cost–benefit analysis. The supposed virtue of that approach is that it is neutral as to competing preferences. Thus, for the Court …

Therapeutic Potential Of Sh-Hp (His-D-Trp-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys) In Helicobacter Pylori Infection And Acute Gastric Intoxication, Mohammed Mahdi Salman Ghadban Oct 2025

Therapeutic Potential Of Sh-Hp (His-D-Trp-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys) In Helicobacter Pylori Infection And Acute Gastric Intoxication, Mohammed Mahdi Salman Ghadban

Al-Nisour Journal for Medical Sciences

Helicobacter pylori is a highly prevalent gastric pathogen (colonizing ∼50% of people worldwide) that causes chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, MALT lymphoma, and gastric cancer. Rising antibiotic resistance (e.g. >15% clarithromycin resistance) has compromised standard eradication regimens, necessitating novel therapies. SH-HP (His-D-Trp-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys) is a synthetic hexapeptide analogue of the endogenous hormone ghrelin/GHRP-6, originally developed as a growth hormone secretagogue. Preclinical studies reveal that SH-HP/GHRP-6 has potent gastroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects: it prevents stress-induced gastric mucosal lesions and mitigates multiorgan damage in ischemia/reperfusion models. Given that ghrelin receptor signaling plays a key role in gut mucosal defense (via nitric oxide and …

Remedies For Unreasonable Administrative Action After Vavilov, Kate Glover Berger Oct 2025

Remedies For Unreasonable Administrative Action After Vavilov, Kate Glover Berger

Articles & Book Chapters

This article comments on Pepa v. Canada (Citizenship and Immigration), arguing that it departs from the Supreme Court's previous guidance on remedies in an unprincipled manner. The article outlines the remedial framework established in Canada (Minister of Citizenship and Immigration) v. Vavilov, traces its development over the past five years, discusses key departures from the general rule of remittal, and highlights the principles these departures reflect. It then examines the approach to remedies adopted in Pepa. This assessment shows that the Pepa majority's invocation of the "single reasonable interpretation" exception to the general rule of remittal departs from the core …

Groundwater Quality Analyses For Irrigation Purposes In Salah Al-Din, Iraq: A Review, Noor A. Radhi, Dawood E. Sachit, Abdul-Sahib T. Al-Madhhachi

Al-Esraa University College Journal for Engineering Sciences

The focus of this study is the effect of the physical and chemical characteristics of groundwaters on plants and agricultural crops, following the last studies on this matter. The results underscore the necessity for groundwater treatment before its utilization in irrigation for sustainable agricultural farming. It is also possible to identify which crop type can be grown in well-watered land, according to the characteristics of irrigation water and the yield of each crop. The study also introduces some ideas about irrigation water quality parameters such as Electrical conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, Chloride (Cl–), Sodium (Na …

Perioperative Repercussions Of Cannabis Use-Implications For Gi Endoscopy Sedation, Basavana Goudra, Michael Green Oct 2025

Perioperative Repercussions Of Cannabis Use-Implications For Gi Endoscopy Sedation, Basavana Goudra, Michael Green

Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers

The legalization of cannabis in multiple U.S. states and several other countries, along with its increasing social acceptance across diverse demographic and socioeconomic groups, has led to a growing number of patients presenting for interventional procedures with a history of cannabis use. Although anesthetic and sedation-related implications may be less pronounced than in major surgery, they remain clinically relevant and warrant careful consideration. Key factors include acute intoxication, chronic use, and cannabis use disorder. Cannabis users often require higher-and sometimes unpredictable-doses of propofol and other sedatives. Inhalational use is associated with airway hyperreactivity, increasing the risk of bronchospasm and, in …

Neuronal Mct2 Promotes Angiogenesis Via Lactate In The Developing Mouse Neocortex, Daehoon Lee, Anika Wu, Lingling Yao, Shreya Satish, Lin Mei, Wen Cheng Xiong

Faculty Scholarship

Neural activity drives blood vessel (BV) formation and energy substrate delivery in the developing brain to meet rising metabolic demands; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we exposed neonatal mice to chronic whisker stimulation (WS), a paradigm known to enhance BV formation in the somatosensory (S1) cortex. Transcriptomic (RNA-seq) and spatial (RNA-scope) analyses revealed that WS upregulated monocarboxylate transporter 2 (MCT2) in cortical neurons and MCT1 in endothelial cells (ECs). These changes coincided with increased cortical lactate levels, elevated astrocytic vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFa), and enhanced angiogenesis. Functional experiments demonstrated that neuronal MCT2 is …

The Effects Of Plastic Mulch And Irrigation On Hemp Chemistry And Leaf Endophytes, Allison Rietman, Connor Morozumi, Robert C. Pearce, Natalie Christian Oct 2025

The Effects Of Plastic Mulch And Irrigation On Hemp Chemistry And Leaf Endophytes, Allison Rietman, Connor Morozumi, Robert C. Pearce, Natalie Christian

Journal of Agricultural Hemp Research

As an emerging crop, cultivation techniques for industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) are still being developed and optimized. For example, irrigation and plastic mulching are some management practices that have been touted for their benefits in improving crop quality. Both techniques ensure ample water availability, which has often been attributed to improving hemp cannabinoid and terpene composition. In this study, we examined how supplemental irrigation implemented in a plastic mulch system influenced the cannabinoid and terpene profiles of one cultivar of CBD hemp, Lifter. We grew industrial hemp in field with plastic mulch and applied regular irrigation to one group …

Livingness As A Liberatory Framework For Decolonizing Lis Praxis, Sarah Appedu Oct 2025

Livingness As A Liberatory Framework For Decolonizing Lis Praxis, Sarah Appedu

School of Information Studies - Post-doc and Student Scholarship

The fields of library and information science (LIS) are in a pivotal moment. While the stakes may seem higher than ever, Indigenous, Black, and queer communities have long anticipated this moment, demonstrating how libraries and archives are not yet equipped to meaningfully participate in the project of decolonization. I build on existing calls for decolonization in our discourse and practices by drawing attention to the living/non-living dualism in our ontologies and the ways it constrains our ability to reconcile with our fields’ colonizing origins. I contemplate what it would mean to treat all information as endowed with a sense of …
