Ventral Tegmental Area Regulation Of Stress-Induced Reinstatement Of Cocaine-Seeking Behavior, Jordan Michael Blacktop
Ventral Tegmental Area Regulation Of Stress-Induced Reinstatement Of Cocaine-Seeking Behavior, Jordan Michael Blacktop
Dissertations (1934 -)
No FDA approved medications currently exist for the prevention of drug craving, drug seeking, and relapse to cocaine use. Stress is a major factor in causing relapse in cocaine dependent individuals. Cocaine use is positively correlated with stress-induced craving and relapse outcomes. Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) is a 41-amino acid neuropeptide that plays an important role in the stress response and in the reinstatement rodent model of stress-induced relapse. CRF is released during stress in brain regions associated with the effects of drugs of abuse, notably the ventral tegmental area (VTA). This dissertation addresses key unknown mechanisms behind drug-induced neuroplasticity and …
Dangerous Knowledge? Morality And Moral Progress After Naturalism, Daniel Diederich Farmer
Dangerous Knowledge? Morality And Moral Progress After Naturalism, Daniel Diederich Farmer
Dissertations (1934 -)
From the perspective of at least some of our valuing practices, the advance of the sciences can seem to constitute a threat. The question I take up in this dissertation is whether or not naturalism--understood as the picture of the world and of ourselves bequeathed to us by the sciences--should be understood as a threat to our moral practices, to moral living. On the account I defend, the knowledge we gain from empirical inquiry need not undermine moral living in toto, although a naturalistic mindset does raise some possibly dangerous questions for particular inherited moral norms and ideals.
In defense …
Bioinformatics Systems And Mathematical Models For Improved Understanding Of Malaria Transmission, Control, And Elimination, Samson Sifael Kiware
Bioinformatics Systems And Mathematical Models For Improved Understanding Of Malaria Transmission, Control, And Elimination, Samson Sifael Kiware
Dissertations (1934 -)
The leading malaria vector control strategies (i.e., long-lasting insecticidal nets and indoor residual spraying) can reduce indoor transmission, but these tools alone are insufficient to eliminate it. Strategies that target adult mosquitoes when they feed on humans or animals outdoors or target mosquito immature stages are also needed to achieve malaria elimination. Improved data systems for integrating
diverse experimental observations and research groups, as well as process-explicit mathematical models for evaluating them are both essential to achieving these goals.
We have developed a generic schema and data repositories for the studies of malaria vectors that encompass a wide variety of …
Love For God And Earth: Ecospirituality In The Theologies Of Sallie Mcfague And Leonardo Boff, Rebecca A. Meier-Rao
Love For God And Earth: Ecospirituality In The Theologies Of Sallie Mcfague And Leonardo Boff, Rebecca A. Meier-Rao
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation examines the theologies of North American Ecofeminist Sallie McFague and Latin American liberation theologian Leonardo Boff in order to answer the question - What are the features of a Christian spirituality capable of helping people to clear vision, transformation and hope in this time of socio-ecological crisis? In the sixth chapter I also briefly engage the work of Carmelite contemplative Constance FitzGerald, as she both reinforces and deepens the theologians' answer to the above question.
The dissertation begins with a short explanation of the interlocking ecological and social crises, and offers a basic understanding of Christian spirituality as …
Hypothalamic Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase-Activating Polypeptide: Impact On Energy Homeostasis And Glutamate Signaling, Jon Resch
Dissertations (1934 -)
Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) is a member of the secretin-glucagon superfamily of peptide hormones, with homology to vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and activity at both the VIP receptors and the PACAP specific PAC1 receptor (PAC1R). Abundantly expressed in the hypothalamus, PACAP was recently discovered to regulate energy balance when central injections produced hypophagia and increased metabolic rate. However, the neurocircuitry mediating these effects in the hypothalamus are poorly understood.
To characterize how hypothalamic PACAP signaling affects energy homeostasis we microinjected PACAP site-specifically into the hypothalamic paraventricular (PVN) and ventromedial nuclei (VMN) and examined feeding behavior and metabolism. PACAP injected …
Reframing The Civil Rights Narrative: From Compliance To Collective Impact, Susan P. Sturm
Reframing The Civil Rights Narrative: From Compliance To Collective Impact, Susan P. Sturm
Faculty Scholarship
This chapter first analyzes the limits of the civil rights/compliance framework as an overarching change theory for transforming institutions and systems, and then sketches out the features of a full participation framework grounded in a collective-impact approach to reducing structural inequality. Full participation is a framework that nests antidiscrimination within an affirmative vision connected to a theory of action, and a methodology aimed at systems change. It resonates with a wide range of emerging scholarship and activism aimed at advancing equality under conditions of complexity, changing demographics, decentered governance, privatization, and technological change. The framework draws on insights from extensive …

Gis Modeling Of Elk Habitat Suitability In The North Cascades Of Washington State, Anna Yost
All Master's Theses
The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) elk management goals are to adjust the distribution of elk on the landscape in the North Cascades to reduce negative impacts to private property while maintaining a healthy population of elk in the area. The goal of this study was to use custom Geographic Information System (GIS) elk habitat suitability models to model baseline elk habitat suitability in the 8,600 km2 North Cascades elk management area, and then evaluate how theoretical forage enhancement sites would affect habitat suitability. Prior to creating the baseline and proposed habitat suitability maps for the …
Sustainability Policy’S Inherent Dilemmas – Exemplified Via Critical Examination Of The Las Vegas Metropolitan Sustainability Campaign, Kathryn A. Zimmerman
Sustainability Policy’S Inherent Dilemmas – Exemplified Via Critical Examination Of The Las Vegas Metropolitan Sustainability Campaign, Kathryn A. Zimmerman
All Master's Theses
In response to a dual problem of critical water scarcity and rapid population growth, leaders of metropolitan Las Vegas implemented a region-wide, internationally marketed sustainability campaign. Preliminary studies found that, while sustainability policy attains its rhetorical goals, solutions initiated not only perpetuate but also purposefully expand the original dual problem to justify continuous water resource acquisitions. To examine this sustainability conundrum constructed by leadership—problem-perpetuation rather than problem-resolution—a critical examination in resource management asked two basic questions: what is being sustained and by what means? Via this inquiry, specific processes by which leaders perpetuate problems can be identified; and, so-informed, new …
Inactivation By Uv-Radiation And Internalization Of Coliforms And Escherichia Coli In Aquaponically And Hydroponically Grown Lettuce, Matthew J. Moriarty
Inactivation By Uv-Radiation And Internalization Of Coliforms And Escherichia Coli In Aquaponically And Hydroponically Grown Lettuce, Matthew J. Moriarty
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent studies have shown that coliform bacteria, specifically Escherichia coli O157:H7, can internalize in leafy green produce. Therefore, a risk exists for lettuce being grown in systems using mixed water sources. Additionally, Ultra Violet light radiation has been shown to inactivate coliforms in water. For this reason, an experiment was conducted at West Virginia University's aquaculture facility to determine the effect of UV-radiation in water supplying an aquaponic channel with nutrients, and to assess the risk of coliform and E. coli internalization. In this experiment, the spring fed, flow-through aquaponic system was receiving runoff from cattle pastures as a source …

This work introduces the implementation of particle system to be simulated to work as a group of unmanned mobile robots (swarm robots). These robots are able to locate a specified target in the predefined environment with high efficiency when driven by an optimized Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The application of the particle system to the mobile robots to search for a target in the environment is called Collective Robotics Search (CRS) problem. The main benefit of this application is to eVolve better solutions than using single robot through the collective interaction of all robots between them to achieve the …
A Visit To The Kilns: A Formative Experience For Two Christian Teacher Educators, Karen S. Buchanan, Thomas D. Buchanan
A Visit To The Kilns: A Formative Experience For Two Christian Teacher Educators, Karen S. Buchanan, Thomas D. Buchanan
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
The C.S. Lewis Study Centre at the Kilns is located near Oxford, England in the previous home of C.S. Lewis, the highly influential 20th century Christian intellectual and apologist. Two professors, who coupled a brief stay at the Kilns with an inquiry into the life of Lewis and his writings, present insights into their work as teacher educators. Three main areas are explored. The first area is the nature of our work, including a discussion of the distinct roles associated with Christian teacher educators and the importance of professional community. Next is a discussion on the quality of our work, …
Pick Up Sticks Art Teacher - Interconnectedness And Fragility: Pedagogy As An Artistic Encounter, Mark Graham
Pick Up Sticks Art Teacher - Interconnectedness And Fragility: Pedagogy As An Artistic Encounter, Mark Graham
Faculty Publications
I am interested in the dilemma thatK–12 art teachers often bring up when we talk about art and teaching; the struggle to maintain their artistic identity. School is seen as a sometimes rewarding but generally time-consuming detour from the art studio. They try to keep the artist alive by making art “on the side” or in the margins of their teaching responsibilities. The conflict between teacher and artist is also apparent in the education of college art students, where the ultimate “prize” is to get the MFA and then eventually to be anointed a college teacher. The aspiration to become a …
The Meditation Collection Space, Mark Graham
The Meditation Collection Space, Mark Graham
Faculty Publications
At the edge of nothingness and invisibility is the materiality of collecting. These reminders of what cannot be seen include reliquaries containing the bones of saints, Buddhist shrines, and boxes designed to capture the fleeting experience of a day together. On a mountain in Nepal, I gathered green granite crystals, along with scraps of prayer flags, rusted pitons, and old coins. Later, these become a shrine to an ineffable experience of living in the clouds, which I named the Meditation Space. The Meditation Space includes natural objects, religious icons, bones, rocks and toy animals. It brings up many questions. What …

Aligning Policy With Perception: Management Of Whitewater Recreationists In The Tieton River Corridor, Kathryn Buchholz
Aligning Policy With Perception: Management Of Whitewater Recreationists In The Tieton River Corridor, Kathryn Buchholz
All Master's Theses
Best management practices for whitewater recreationists visiting the Tieton River Corridor were identified by integrating carrying capacity, visitor perceptions of their experience and land managers' regulations. Indicators of bare soil measurements, vehicle parking capacity and crowding were utilized to formulate ecological, physical and social carrying capacities of the study area in relation to whitewater recreationists. One hundred forty-eight participants responded to onsite questionnaires regarding perceptions on crowding, the study area, and their experience of visiting the Tieton River Corridor. Forest Service policy was examined and applied to the study area to identify areas exceeding standards. An intervention tool incorporating persuasive …
Empathy: A Possible Link Between Charismatic Megafauna And Environmental Concern, Anthony Joseph Carr
Empathy: A Possible Link Between Charismatic Megafauna And Environmental Concern, Anthony Joseph Carr
All Master's Theses
Environmental organizations have long used charismatic megafauna - popular large animals - as strategic figureheads to summon support for conservation actions. While the animals chosen as flagship species usually have anthropomorphic features, such as large body size and forward-facing eyes, there is no commonly accepted explanation for why these similarities influence people's willingness to help these species. In this study, empathy was found to be predictive of perceived need and willingness to help in a conservation scenario. While framing a threatened ecosystem as the habitat of an unspecified animal species with cultural characteristics increased reports of situational empathy, perceived need …

Gesture Sequence In Captive Orangutans (Pongo Pygmaeus), Amanda Leone Carner
All Master's Theses
The most flexible form of communication may be gestures used by large body apes. The current study focused on gesture sequence in five captive orangutans at Woodland Park Zoo. We observed 305 gestures with 185 gestures (60.65%) occurring in 61 sequences in 2,482 minutes of data. Overall, orangutans used 272 tactile gestures (89 .18% ), 29 visual gestures (9 .50%) and 4 facial expressions ( 1.31 % ). In sequence, orangutans used 176 tactile gestures (95.14%), 7 visual gestures (3.78%), and 2 facial expressions (1.08%). Overall, a two-way repeated measure ANOV A showed significantly more tactile (x=26.9) than visual (x=2.9) …
The Making And Unmaking Of An Autocrat: Edwin Eells And The Skokomish Reservation, 1871-1885, Adam Bradford Griffith
The Making And Unmaking Of An Autocrat: Edwin Eells And The Skokomish Reservation, 1871-1885, Adam Bradford Griffith
All Master's Theses
Much has been written about Ulysses S. Grant's Indian Peace Policy. This paper will examine the progress of its implementation on the Skokomish Reservation in Washington Territory through the work of Indian Agent Edwin Eells and analyze the likely causes of his autocratic style of management. The paper will show that Eells' professional mindset was modeled by missionary parents with a tradition of intense, narrowly focused religious commitment and influenced general white racism towards Indians. However, while the peace policy was based on an earlier European colonial model, the paper will also show that while Eells attempted to exert his …
Population Structure And Growth Rates Of Northern Pacific Rattlesnakes In The Methow Valley, Washington, Raymund Joseph Geroso
Population Structure And Growth Rates Of Northern Pacific Rattlesnakes In The Methow Valley, Washington, Raymund Joseph Geroso
All Master's Theses
Population structure among a wide-ranging ectothermic species is a fundamental aspect of ecology. I assessed the size structure and growth rate of two different populations of Northern Pacific rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus) in the Methow Valley, Washington during the summer of 2009 to determine the vigor of populations exposed to extreme winter conditions. Populations in the Methow Valley were comparable to other populations exposed to shorter active seasons. One population was in stable condition, and the other may have the potential to grow. Though the number of rattlesnakes was much smaller in the WC den compared to the GR …

Morphological Analysis And Soil Characterization Of Balsamroot (Balsamorhiza) Natural Hybrid Zones In Central Washington, Mariah H. Helvy
All Master's Theses
It has been hypothesized that species of Balsamroot, genus Balsamorhiza, hybridize readily in nature, but no study has quantitatively described the morphological types found in or the environmental characteristics of hybrid zones in this genus. Here, we investigate the relationship between morphological types and soil characteristics in four Balsamorhiza sagittata-hookeri putative hybrid zones in Grant County, Washington State, USA. Clustering analysis of morphological traits suggested that plants could be classified into two groups, a B. sagittata-like group and a B. hookeri-like group, although there was variation within each group. Over all sites, B. sagittata-like plants were …

Dna From Chewed Vegetation: A Noninvasive Collection Strategy For Golden-Handed Tamarins (Saguinus Midas), Jennifer E. Humphreys
All Master's Theses
Noninvasive genetic sampling was first used in wild animals more than two decades ago, although since that time there have been advancements in both sampling strategies and amplification technology [Hoss et al., 1992; Taberlet and Bouvet, 1992]. Feces, hair, and urine are examples of biomaterials that are collected noninvasively [Beja-Pereira et al., 2009]. These materials provide clear advantages over the more invasive DNA sampling techniques such as blood collection; researchers can study nonhuman subjects without contacting, disturbing, or even seeing them. This advantage becomes greater in habitats disturbed by human activities such as agriculture or mining. The Republic of Suriname, …

The Effects Of Sugar Substitutes On The Gut Microbiota Of Mice, Katie A. Lantau
The Effects Of Sugar Substitutes On The Gut Microbiota Of Mice, Katie A. Lantau
All Master's Theses
Obesity has become an ever increasing global problem. This has caused people to turn to sugar substitutes, no calorie sweeteners, to reduce their caloric intake. However, recent studies have shown that it is not just caloric intake that can affect weight, but also the diversity of the bacteria in the gut (Turnbaugh et al., 2009). It has been shown that an increased Firmicutes:Bacteroidetes ratio and an overall decrease in microbial diversity leads to an obesity associated gut microbiome (Turnbaugh et al., 2009; Ley et al., 2005). The purpose of this study was to determine if two of the most popular …

Blood As A Binding Agent In Cormac Mccarthy's _The Crossing_, Erin M. Martin
Blood As A Binding Agent In Cormac Mccarthy's _The Crossing_, Erin M. Martin
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In Cormac McCarthy's The Crossing, one of the most important aspects of blood is the way it connects Billy Parham to his family and the world around him. Billy's actions are driven largely by his desire to maintain his moral code and his connections to nature and his maternal grandmother. His link to nature begins with an encounter with a wolf pack and continues with an attempt to return a she-wolf to her homeland. The connection to his grandmother provides him with the means to do so when he crosses the border from New Mexico into Mexico. Billy's ability …
The Effects Of Beaver Dams On The Structure And Function Of Invertebrate Communities In A Southeastern Coastal Plain Stream, Damon L. Mullis
The Effects Of Beaver Dams On The Structure And Function Of Invertebrate Communities In A Southeastern Coastal Plain Stream, Damon L. Mullis
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Beaver were at the brink of extinction in the early 20th century, but over the past century populations have been rebounding. This increase in range and population size has raised new concerns over possible impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Beaver are considered ecosystem engineers because they change the physical structure of aquatic systems through the construction of dams, which turn naturally flowing sections of rivers and streams into standing water. Such changes are known to influence habitat heterogeneity, influence organic matter transport and storage, and consequentially influence biological diversity. To my knowledge, no studies of the effects of beaver impoundments …

Neuromodulation Based Control Of Autonomous Robots On A Cloud Computing Platform, Cameron Muhammad
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In recent years, the advancement of neurobiologically plausible models and computer networking has resulted in new ways of implementing control systems on robotic platforms. The work presents a control approach based on vertebrate neuromodulation and its implementation on autonomous robots in the open-source, open-access environment of robot operating system (ROS). A spiking neural network (SNN) is used to model the neuromodulatory function for generating context based behavioral responses of the robots to sensory input signals. The neural network incorporates three types of neurons- cholinergic and noradrenergic (ACh/NE) neurons for attention focusing and action selection, dopaminergic (DA) neurons for rewards- and …
