Christian Realism And The Sins Of Mass Incarceration, Jeffrey R. Baker
Christian Realism And The Sins Of Mass Incarceration, Jeffrey R. Baker
Georgia Criminal Law Review
This article is a study of Reinhold Niebuhr’s Christian Realism, a progressive school of social ethics rooted in Christian theology, and its critical evaluation of American mass incarceration. Christian Realism seeks justice in society under law, formed by love as its fundamental organizing principle. It acknowledges a world with endemic structural injustices and social immorality, but it finds temperate hope in the human potential for love, redemption, and generosity. Christian Realism reckons that any institution committed to justice must inevitably compromise to achieve incremental progress toward good. But it projects steady, hopeful progress toward justice, even as systems calibrate …

Dungeon Escape, Andrew Begemann
Dungeon Escape, Andrew Begemann
Game Design
This game was developed during a GAM 56800 course taken in the first half of the 2025 school year. The game prototype features a player that moves though a procedurally generating dungeon collecting potions and fending off enemies until finding the key to the portal that lets them leave the dungeon. The whole game development process was followed, from game design document creation to compiling an installer/uploading to itch.io, as an in-depth study. Free assets were used from the unity assets store and chatGPT was used occasionally to supplement coding/scripting needs. The player character was modeled specifically for unity animation …

The Fast And The Very Fast: High-Frequency Oscillations In Alzheimer's Disease, Manuel Silva-Pérez, Jeannie Chin
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Alzheimer's disease increases the risk of developing epilepsy together with cognitive decline. Early diagnosis or prediction of parameters associated with epileptic activity can greatly help in managing disease outcomes. Network hyperexcitability is a candidate of interest as a neurophysiological biomarker of Alzheimer's disease. High-frequency oscillations are increasingly recognized as potential biomarkers of hyperexcitability and epileptic activity. However, they have not yet been identified in Alzheimer's disease. In this study, we measured high-frequency oscillations via magnetoencephalography recordings in Alzheimer's disease patients with and without epileptic activity, as part of a Phase 2a randomized, double blind clinical trial of the efficacy of …

Dysfunction at the centrosome-cilium interface underlies a broad range of ciliopathies. Here, we identify biallelic variants in CEP76, encoding a centrosomal protein, in eight unrelated individuals presenting with neurodevelopmental, ocular, and variable additional multisystem features. Proband-derived fibroblasts and CEP76-depleted RPE1 cells display ciliary deficits, including impaired cilium formation and length, disrupted transition zone architecture, and impaired IFT88-mediated anterograde intraflagellar transport. Zebrafish cep76 mutants recapitulate key clinical phenotypes, and in vitro complementation assays confirm pathogenicity for all tested human disease-associated variants. Proteomics analysis identifies CEP76 interactors, including known partners CCP110 and CEP97, and highlights clinically and functionally relevant candidates, including …

Animal Behavior Observation As A Gateway To Scientific Inquiry For Non-Majors, April A. Watson
Animal Behavior Observation As A Gateway To Scientific Inquiry For Non-Majors, April A. Watson
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Undergraduate science educators often face challenges when designing hands-on assignments that are both engaging and accessible for non-science majors. These challenges are heightened in today’s varied course structures, which may be in person, online, or hybrid, and in formats ranging from four to sixteen weeks. In compressed courses, the need for meaningful yet straightforward research experiences are especially pressing. At Lynn University, the Scientific Literacy course meets daily for two and a half hours over four weeks. To provide authentic research within this time frame, I implemented animal behavior observation projects. Students are introduced to ad libitum and focal animal …

Lysosomes are essential organelles for cellular homeostasis and signaling, with dysfunction linked to neurological disorders, lysosomal storage diseases, and cancer. While proteomics has advanced our understanding of lysosomal composition, the structural characterization of lysosomal membrane proteins in their native environment remains a significant challenge. Here, we developed a cryo electron tomography workflow to visualize lysosomal membrane proteins within intact, native lysosomal membranes. We isolated endolysosomes by independently targeting two lysosomal membrane proteins, transient receptor potential mucolipin 1 and transmembrane protein 192, enriching organelles that exhibited the expected morphology and proteomic composition of the endolysosomal system. Sub-tomogram averaging enabled the structural …

Viral Oncogenes Drive Biphenotypic Lymphoproliferative Malignancy In Transgenic Mice, Daniel A Rauch, John Harding, Ancy Joseph, Lee Ratner
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is the cause of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and viral oncogenic proteins, Tax and Hbz, are critical drivers of malignancy. Expression of both CD2 and CD20 has been described in a subset of ATLL cases. Transgenic mice were engineered to monitor lymphoma and leukemia after expression of Hbz and doxycycline-inducible Tax in activated T cells under the regulation of the human granzyme B (GZMB) promoter. These mice spontaneously developed lymphoproliferative disease characterized by the expansion and transformation of Cd2 + Cd20 + cells resulting in lymphoma and / or leukemia with involvement of …

Introduction: Topical or cutaneous methods of temporary deafferentation (TD) have shown potential as a tool to augment the effects of rehabilitative approaches for neurological conditions. TD has been suggested to achieve such effects due to its ability to suppress activity from afferent input that may be inhibitory to rehabilitative processes. However, most approaches to date have utilized prescription-grade anesthetic agents, which may be difficult to translate to routine outpatient rehabilitation or in remote settings. Here, we sought to evaluate whether TD could be achieved with readily available over-the-counter (OTC) 5% lidocaine topical anesthetic. We targeted the biceps brachii for TD, …
Quantitative Trait Loci (Qtl) Mapping For Protein Content, And Amino Acids In A Cowpea Magic Population, Jean Paul Iyakaremye, Jeneen Fields
Quantitative Trait Loci (Qtl) Mapping For Protein Content, And Amino Acids In A Cowpea Magic Population, Jean Paul Iyakaremye, Jeneen Fields
Symposium of Digital Agriculture
Cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) are an important food crop and an essential part of traditional cropping systems in tropical and subtropical regions. In addition to their resistance to harsh environmental conditions, cowpeas serve as a significant source of protein for both human and animal consumption. They are also increasingly targeted as a crop due to their potential to contribute to the growing global demand for plant-based protein. Seed protein content ranges from 23% to 32% of seed weight in breeding lines from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) collection. Most breeding programs have focused on drought tolerance, as …
High Throughput Phenotyping For Improved Sorghum Protein Digestibility, Erin C. Widener, Mitchell R. Tuinstra
High Throughput Phenotyping For Improved Sorghum Protein Digestibility, Erin C. Widener, Mitchell R. Tuinstra
Symposium of Digital Agriculture
Protein digestibility (PD) is a quantitative trait that is generally lower in sorghum than other cereals such as corn & rice. This affects the ability for humans and animals to obtain vital nutrients from sorghum food products and feedstuffs. Previous efforts helped create and identify sorghum lines with highly digestible protein (HDP) phenotypes using mutagenesis. This creates variation for the trait that can be exploited by breeding programs. However, phenotyping large populations is highly time consuming using wet-chemistry techniques and can exhaust resources quickly, leading to bottlenecks in development of breeding objectives. Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) offers a fast, non-destructive alternative …

Geospatial Modeling Of Spatiotemporal Variability In Farm-Scale Soil Organic Matter Dynamics, Amiya Kalra, Rachel Stevens, Shams R Rahmani, Daniel J. Quinn, Shaun Casteel, Siddhartho S. Paul
Symposium of Digital Agriculture
Soil organic matter (SOM) is a key indicator of soil health, which is vital for maintaining future crops and income. Furthering our understanding of long-term variability in SOM and digital soil mapping methods of SOM will help farmers make management decisions supporting stable yields. While SOM dynamics have been studied in some regional-scale and plot-level studies, their spatiotemporal variability at farm scale is largely unstudied. In this research, we used geospatial models to identify and interpret long-term trends (2015-2024) in SOM at farm scale using the Purdue University research farm in West Lafayette, Indiana as a case study. Our SOM …
Wayward Joy In Queer Femme-Inist Educational Research, Sarah Stapleton, Lindsay Cavanaugh, Jade Crimson Rose Da Costa
Wayward Joy In Queer Femme-Inist Educational Research, Sarah Stapleton, Lindsay Cavanaugh, Jade Crimson Rose Da Costa
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This article draws on our experiences with “Femme Educational Futurities,” a dream-mapping (Author 2, 2023), critical arts-based, participatory-informed project about softness in K–12 schools, to explore the boundaries of queer, femme-inist research. We trace how our attempts to enact research softly (Schwartz, 2020) led us towards wayward joy (Hartman, 2019): a messy affective terrain marked by connection, vulnerability, shame, and hope. For each author, we identify what Applebaum (1995) calls a “stop” moment and explore within each instance the convergence of softness, radical love (hooks, 2000) and tender failure (Halberstam, 2011), and discuss what joy means to us as a …

Myths And Magical Thinking: American Civil Religion, The Establishment Clause, And “Codified Irrationality” In Anti-Crt Measures, Kyle Reinhard
Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development
(Excerpt)
In Part I, I preview some of the overlapping tensions in U.S. public schooling created by the occasionally competing mandates of education federalism and democratic theory; describe the current state of the law with respect to the constitutionality of state and local governments seeking to inculcate (allegedly) prosocial community values in curriculum; and consider how battles over the meaning of “patriotism” through the decades show that ideology and religion often blend—and still, inevitably, make it—into the public square broadly nonetheless.
In Part II, I describe how religion is a useful tool, both descriptively and as a constitutional jurisprudential framework, …
Polysaccharide From Schisandra Chinensis Alleviates Ulcerative Colitis By Improving Intestinal Microbiota Abundance And Inhibiting The Tlr4/P65/Iκbα Pathway In Dextran Sodium Sulfate-Induced Mice, Caihong Wu, Yang Yang, Peng Liu, Bin Zhang, Hui Lu

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Schisandra chinensis polysaccharides (SCP) are isolated from Schisandra chinensis with a mean molecular weight of 32.401 kDa. Previous studies have demonstrated that Schisandra chinensis extract effectively prevented colitis and modulated gut microbiota in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mice. In this study, 3% DSS was used to induce acute ulcerative colitis in mice, and then the SCP with different doses (50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg) and 5- aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) were used to treat mice by oral gavage for one week. Here, we report for the first time that SCP presents outstanding protective effects on colon damage induced by DSS …

Investigation Of Different Pretreatment Methods On Macroalgal Biomass For Efficient Biohydrogen Production Via Dark Fermentation, Abeer Dhafer S. Alqahtani, Bassam O. Aljohny, Arulazhagan Pugazhendi
Investigation Of Different Pretreatment Methods On Macroalgal Biomass For Efficient Biohydrogen Production Via Dark Fermentation, Abeer Dhafer S. Alqahtani, Bassam O. Aljohny, Arulazhagan Pugazhendi
The Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Science
Traditional fossil fuel sources cannot meet increasing energy demand and lead to rising health and global warming concerns. Biohydrogen is a promising alternative to fossil fuels in the zero-carbon economy of the future. The third generation of biofuel that microorganisms produce is biohydrogen. Dark fermentation is gaining attention, which needs little energy and has a higher production rate than other techniques. The biomass of macroalgae has excellent potential as a substrate through dark fermentation. Macroalgae, also known as seaweed, is a highly abundant, fast-growing, and renewable resource that can be sustainably harvested. Macroalgae with significant carbohydrate and no lignin content …

The Dinosaur Trials, Ashley Brooke Allen
The Dinosaur Trials, Ashley Brooke Allen
Masters Theses
This thesis presents dinosaurs as a thematic craft element in fiction. The research portion of the thesis project describes dinosaur fiction as a genre and surveys key works of dinosaur fiction. It focuses on how the genre’s literary tradition established thematic precedent for fictional dinosaurs. The thesis highlights dinosaurs as characters and symbols while tracing the development of tropes and expectations within dinosaur fiction. It also acknowledges a potential limitation in the genre where science fiction elements constrain the creative and thematic potential of fictional dinosaurs. In response to this limitation, the thesis argues for new fantasy genre installments of …

Introduction: Neuropsychological assessment of bilingual (English/Spanish) individuals presents challenges that can impact test validity. Language proficiency influences cognitive performance, yet clear guidelines for determining the appropriate test language are lacking. We describe our experiences at the South Texas Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (STAC) in addressing these challenges within the context of National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) Uniform Data Set (UDS) assessments and broader Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) protocols. We outline steps toward a structured language assessment approach.
Methods: We implemented a process to assess language proficiency, integrating self-reported and objective measures, including the language dominance index (LDI). Case examples …
