There Oughta Be A Law—A Model Law, Mary Whisner Jan 2014

There Oughta Be A Law—A Model Law, Mary Whisner

Librarians' Articles

Uniform and model laws are frequently proposed to standardize “what the law is or should be” for specific jurisdictions. These model acts can come from national or international drafting organizations, such as the Uniform Law Commission, or from interest groups or associations that want to promote specific policies. Ms. Whisner provides an overview of the various types of model laws that researchers should know about.

The Use Of Human And Conspecific Gestures By Capuchin Monkeys To Solve An Object-Choice Task, Lindsay Paige Schwartz Jan 2014

The Use Of Human And Conspecific Gestures By Capuchin Monkeys To Solve An Object-Choice Task, Lindsay Paige Schwartz

Honors Theses

Most primates live in highly complex social systems, and therefore have evolved similarly complex methods of communicating with each other. One type of communication is the use of manual gestures, which are only found in primates. No substantial evidence exists indicating that monkeys use communicative gestures in the wild. However, monkeys may demonstrate the ability to learn and/or use gestures in certain experimental paradigms since they¿ve been shown to use other visual cues such as gaze. The purpose of this study was to investigate if ten brown capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) were able to use gestural cues from monkeys and …

Diel Vertical Migration Strategies Of Zooplankton In Oligotrophic Russell Pond, New Hampshire, Kelsey Ann Dobe

Honors Theses and Capstones

Russell Pond is an ultra-oligotrophic lake with low chlorophyll a (1.9 mg L-1), total phosphorus (3.4 mg L-1), high Secchi Disk (10.4 m) and high light transmission (water coefficient of water, kw=0.33). Vertical migration of Chaoborus, Bosmina, Daphnia, and copepods were examined using net collections of zooplankton discrete depth counts and sonar. Three contrasting patterns of vertical migration were observed in Russell Pond. Chaoborus punctipennis larvae vertical migration began at 7 pm and migrated through the entire lake water column, a total of 23 m from the sediments to the surface water in …

Sex Trafficking Laws In East Tennessee, Cheryl Page Jan 2014

Sex Trafficking Laws In East Tennessee, Cheryl Page

Journal Publications

There was a time in U.S. history when opponents of the trans-Atlantic slave trade had to convince the watching world that slavery was horrid and against the laws of humanity. Today, modern-day abolitionists are attempting to make a sleeping world aware that slavery still exists. There are approximately 27 million people currently enslaved in the world today. It is a problem that our own community cannot ignore, because slavery exists in East Tennessee and is thriving. Slavery in East Tennessee takes the form of sex trafficking, in which women and children are bought and sold as property for the sexual …

Gestational And Pregestational Diabetes In The Eastern Mediterranean Region: A Meta-Analysis Of Maternal And Fetal Outcomes, Saulat Jahan Jan 2014

Gestational And Pregestational Diabetes In The Eastern Mediterranean Region: A Meta-Analysis Of Maternal And Fetal Outcomes, Saulat Jahan

Harold L. Hodgkinson Award for Outstanding Dissertation

Pregestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes including increased caesarean section rates, macrosomia, and perinatal mortality. Despite the high prevalence of GDM and PGDM in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), most of the published studies examining the association between GDM/PGDM and adverse pregnancy outcomes have small sample sizes, low statistical power, and few adverse outcomes with conflicting results. The purpose of this study was to determine the association of GDM/PGDM with adverse pregnancy outcomes among women in the EMR, by using a meta-analysis research design. Following the conceptual model of the epidemiologic …

Molecular Phylogeny Of Chlorella-Related Chlorophytes (Chlorophyta) From Anatolian Freshwaters Of Turkey, Özgür Baytut, Cem Tolga Gürkanli, Ari̇f Gönülol, İbrahi̇m Özkoç

Turkish Journal of Botany

This study aimed to investigate molecular taxonomic diversity of unicellular chlorophyte strains in the northern Anatolian freshwater habitats of Turkey. Five strains were isolated from various habitats i.e. salty lagoons, shallow lakes, or slow-flowing creeks. The habitats chosen were Cernek lagoon (Kızılırmak Delta, Samsun), Kara lake (Çubuk, Ankara), Sarıkum lagoon (Sinop), and Sırakaraağaçlar creek (Sinop). Although the observations based on light microscopy showed no significant differences in cell morphologies, phylogenetic analysis based on nucleotide sequences of nuclear 18S rDNA and chloroplast 16S rDNA regions suggested that our isolates are related to 3 chlorophyte species: Chlorella vulgaris Beijerinck (S705, S706, and …

Field Implementation Of Phanerochaete Chrysosporium Biomass Pretreatment: Fungal Identification And Inoculation Techniques, Bobby D. Carey Jr Jan 2014

Field Implementation Of Phanerochaete Chrysosporium Biomass Pretreatment: Fungal Identification And Inoculation Techniques, Bobby D. Carey Jr

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

Scaling biological pretreatment from the bench scale to the production scale may be more economical if unsterilized feedstock are used, however these allow for microbial competition from contaminates. An accurate and rapid method for identifying the desired biological pretreatment organism is necessary to confirm the presence of the desired organism when contaminates are morphologically similar to the target organism. Traditional methods, such as visual identification, sequencing, and selective plating can be time consuming and are sometimes still inconclusive. Based on methods described in the literature, plasmid DNA containing the marker genes gus (-glucuronidase), LacZ, and gfp (green fluorescence protein) …

The Barricade, Rue De La Mortellerie, June 1848: A Reflection Of Class Tension In Nineteenth-Century Paris, Chelsea Werner Jan 2014

The Barricade, Rue De La Mortellerie, June 1848: A Reflection Of Class Tension In Nineteenth-Century Paris, Chelsea Werner

The Corinthian

Scholars have previously maintained that Meissonier’s painting pays homage to the many working-class Parisians that died during the uprising. For example, Constance Cain Hungerford contends, “Meissonier thus dignifies the rebels with devotion to a nation ideal that he shared, even if he defied republican values less radically and disapproved of violence as a means to pursue them.”3 Hungerford and other scholars have explored the possibility that The Barricade represents a dedication to those who died during the rebellion, but few have explored the contention that this painting is not only a warning to future rebels, but also a manifestation of …

Illustrated Tales Of Little Sister Fox: Stories About A Clever Fox From Russian Fairytales, Rachel W. Smoot Jan 2014

Illustrated Tales Of Little Sister Fox: Stories About A Clever Fox From Russian Fairytales, Rachel W. Smoot

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis examines the interaction of pictures and words in children’s storybooks. The illustrations placed alongside the text of the book are just as important to understanding the story as are the words. “Illustrated Tales of Little Sister Fox” combines elements of several traditional Russian folktales into a single story. Illustrations are hand sketched and digitally painted.

Autopsy Reports And The Confrontation Clause: A Presumption Of Admissibility, Daniel J. Capra, Joseph Tartakovsky Jan 2014

Autopsy Reports And The Confrontation Clause: A Presumption Of Admissibility, Daniel J. Capra, Joseph Tartakovsky

Faculty Scholarship

Courts nationwide are divided over whether autopsy reports are “testimonial” under the Sixth Amendment’s Confrontation Clause. Resolving that split will affect medical examiners as dramatically as Miranda did police. This article applies the latest Supreme Court jurisprudence to the work of modern medical examiners in a comprehensive inquiry. It argues that autopsy reports should be presumed non-testimonial—a presumption overcome only by a showing that law enforcement involvement materially influenced the examiner’s autopsy report.

Bramatherium (Artiodactyla, Ruminantia, Giraffidae) From The Middle Siwaliks Of Hasnot, Pakistan: Biostratigraphy And Palaeoecology, Muhammad Akbar Khan, Muhammad Akhtar, Ammara Irum Jan 2014

Bramatherium (Artiodactyla, Ruminantia, Giraffidae) From The Middle Siwaliks Of Hasnot, Pakistan: Biostratigraphy And Palaeoecology, Muhammad Akbar Khan, Muhammad Akhtar, Ammara Irum

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

We describe here new remains of the giraffid Bramatherium, from the late Miocene-early Pliocene of Hasnot, northern Pakistan. The fossil giraffid material from Hasnot represents 2 taxa of Bramatherium, B. megacephalum and B. grande. The Hasnot locality is characterised by high proportions of ruminants, namely Boselaphini, Antilopini, Sivatheriinae, Cervini, Dorcatherium, and Dorcabune. The Hasnot fossil ruminant assemblage is fairly typical for the Siwalik province and comparisons with the Greco-Iranian-Afghan and African palaeobiological provinces indicate a late Miocene-early Pliocene age. It is suggested that local Hasnot palaeoenvironments comprised wetlands to woodland biomes, perhaps devoid of expansive dense forests.

On The Accuracy Of Trade And Gdp Statistics In Africa: Errors Of Commission And Omission, Morten Jerven Jan 2014

On The Accuracy Of Trade And Gdp Statistics In Africa: Errors Of Commission And Omission, Morten Jerven

Journal of African Trade

African trade statistics suffer from errors of commission and omission. A quarter-century ago, Alexander Yeats (1990) compared receipts of importers and exporters and concluded that the data could not be used to determine the magnitude, direction, or composition of trade. The only fact to be safely deduced from the evidence was that the statistics were plagued by widespread smuggling and/or underreporting. More than two decades later, despite improvement in external economic conditions, trade statistics continue to be lacking in quality.

Structural And Functional Vocal Fold Epithelial Integrity Following Injury, Ciara Leydon, Mitsuyoshi Imaizumi, David T. Yang, Susan L. Thibeault, Marvin Fried

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Objectives/Hypothesis: An intact epithelium is an important part of vocal fold defense. Damage to the epithelium can compromise vocal fold homeostasis and protection of the host tissue from viral and bacterial invasion. Elucidating the effects of damage on epithelial architectural and barrier integrity provides insight into the role of epithelium in protecting vocal folds. Using an animal model, we evaluated the time course of structural and functional epithelial restoration following injury. Study Design: Prospective, controlled animal study. Methods: Forty rats underwent surgery to remove vocal fold mucosa unilaterally. Larynges were harvested at five time intervals between 3 to 90 days …

By The Power Vested In Me? Licensing Religious Officials To Solemnize Marriage In The Age Of Same-Sex Marriage, Andrew C. Stevens Jan 2014

By The Power Vested In Me? Licensing Religious Officials To Solemnize Marriage In The Age Of Same-Sex Marriage, Andrew C. Stevens

Emory Law Journal

State recognition of same-sex marriage has presented significant new challenges to the law of religious freedom under the First Amendment. For example, all states license religious officials to solemnize civil marriage, a ceremony required for a valid marriage in all states. Could a state that has recognized same-sex marriage require its licensed religious officials to administer their licenses in such a way as not to discriminate against same-sex couples? Or would such a law violate the free exercise rights of that licensed religious official? Or, conversely, is the very practice of state licensing of religious officials to solemnize and enact …

The Abuse Of Animals As A Method Of Domestic Violence: The Need For Criminalization, Vivek Upadhya Jan 2014

The Abuse Of Animals As A Method Of Domestic Violence: The Need For Criminalization, Vivek Upadhya

Emory Law Journal

A substantial amount of research in recent decades has focused on the relationship between domestic violence and animal abuse. This research has shown that an abusive household often contains more than one victim, and that an abuser is likely to harm both his intimate partner and domestic animals in the home. The bulk of this research has focused on the degree to which these forms of abuse co-occur, the predictive utility of these statistics, and the effect that animal abuse has on a victim's decision to leave the abusive household. Research findings in these areas have spawned a number of …

Genetic Relationships Of Some Citrus Genotypes Based On The Candidate Iron Chlorosis Genes, Yildiz Kaçar, Özhan Şi̇mşek, Di̇cle Dönmez, Melda Boncuk, Turgut Yeşi̇loğlu, Patrick Ollitrault

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Iron is one of the most important elements in plant mineral nutrition. Fe deficiency is a critical abiotic stress factor for Mediterranean citriculture; the development of marker-assisted selection for this trait would greatly enhance rootstock breeding. In this study, DNA sequencing and single-stranded conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analyses were performed to determine the allelic diversity of genes associated with tolerance to iron chlorosis in citrus. Two candidate iron chlorosis tolerance genes were selected from existing Citrus EST databases and Arabidopsis thaliana genome databases. Ferritin-3 chloroplast precursor and putative membrane transporter candidate gene sequences were used to define primers in conserved regions. …
