Esau, Son Of Isaac And Grandson Of Abraham: The Model Of A Faithful Son, Moshe Reiss Jan 2014

Esau, Son Of Isaac And Grandson Of Abraham: The Model Of A Faithful Son, Moshe Reiss

The Asbury Journal

The story of Esau and Jacob, the two powerful sons of Isaac and Rebekah is one of the several conflicting families noted in the book of Genesis. Jacob, whose other name is Israel, is the father of the twelve tribes and thus the founder of the Jewish people. Rebekah may be the most pow- erful of the matriarchs; the one God talks to directly about her role in the covenant. The reconciliation of the brothers is one of the more powerful descriptions in the Bible.

Bird Visitation In Native Vs Non-Native Windbreaks In Monteverde, Costa Rica, 2014, Kayla Smith, Sarah Hayden Jan 2014

Bird Visitation In Native Vs Non-Native Windbreaks In Monteverde, Costa Rica, 2014, Kayla Smith, Sarah Hayden

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health

Reforestation in Monteverde, Costa Rica began in the 1980’s and 1990’s and initially used non-native tree species to form windbreaks. In our study we examined bird preferences between native versus non-native trees in windbreaks. We examined three different sites with both native and non-native windbreak tree species. We found that the average bird visitation for windbreaks with native trees (4.17 birds) was not statistically different from visitation in windbreaks with non-native trees (3.50 birds) (T-test p= 0.6). This is not what we expected or other studies would suggest. Future studies should include a larger sample size with more homogeneous ages …

An In Vivo Assay For Simultaneous Monitoring Of Neuronal Activity And Behavioral Output In The Stomatogastric Nervous System Of Decapod Crustaceans, Wolfgang Stein, Florian Diehl Jan 2014

An In Vivo Assay For Simultaneous Monitoring Of Neuronal Activity And Behavioral Output In The Stomatogastric Nervous System Of Decapod Crustaceans, Wolfgang Stein, Florian Diehl

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Central pattern generators (CPGs) generate rhythmic output patterns and drive vital behaviors such as breathing, swallowing, locomotion and chewing 1-10. While most insights into the rhythm generating mechanisms of CPGs have been derived from isolated nervous system preparations, the relationship between neural activity and corresponding behavioral expression is often unclear. The stomatogastric system of decapod crustaceans is one of the best characterized neural system for motor pattern generation 9-12 and many mechanisms of motor pattern generation and selection have been discovered in this system. Since most studies are limited to the isolated nervous system, little is known about the …

The Role Of Micro Blogs In Workplace Learning: The #Lrnchat Phenomenon, Christina A. Ritchie

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the role of the social media niche of micro blogs in workplace learning. Micro blogs consist of messages containing fewer than 140 characters that are sent to a broad audience. Using the #lrnchat group as a case study, a mixed method study was designed. Through a survey followed by in depth interviews, the researcher sought to understand how micro blogs are being used currently to support workplace learning and whether the micro blog group functioned as a community of practice. Once participants discovered #lrnchat, they had a high level of engagement with the group. The information shared …

Structural And Conformational Insights Into Bulky Arylamine-Induced Mutagenesis, Lifang Xu Jan 2014

Structural And Conformational Insights Into Bulky Arylamine-Induced Mutagenesis, Lifang Xu

Open Access Dissertations

Cancer is the second deadliest disease in the United States. Over 100 different types of cancers exist, among which lung, breast and prostate cancers are those most frequently diagnosed. Genetic factors are important. However, exposures to tobacco smoke and environmental pollutants are considered to be responsible for 75%–80% of cancer. About 6% of cancer deaths every year in the US are reportedly to be directly linked to known carcinogen exposures. Therefore, it is important to study the mechanisms of how the environmental carcinogens trigger cancer initiation. Most chemical carcinogens are metabolized into reactive species in vivo to interact with DNA, …

The Cormorant, Donna Mazza Jan 2014

The Cormorant, Donna Mazza

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Research Background : Current land use practices around the Leschenault Inlet have led to severe degradation of the environment. This has been the subject of other research within this faculty. Contemporary ecocritical theory cites the need to narrate the regional to initiate grass roots change that will have exponential impact. (Garrard, 2012).

Research Contribution : The painting The Cormorant depicts the natural tension between the animal and the human. The bird is waiting with wings spread for what the tide will deliver as it stands in the murky, liminal space between the land and the estuary. It is in this …

Student Perceptions Of A Mobile Augmented Reality Game And Willingness To Communicate In Japanese, Andrea Misao Shea Jan 2014

Student Perceptions Of A Mobile Augmented Reality Game And Willingness To Communicate In Japanese, Andrea Misao Shea

Theses and Dissertations

Communication is a key component in learning a second language (L2). As important as the ability to communicate in the L2 is the willingness to use the L2 or, what has been identified in the literature as Willingness to Communicate (WTC). Language is best learned when situated in, and based on, real-life experiences. Technological tools such as virtual worlds, mobile devices, and augmented reality (AR) are increasingly used to take language learning outside of the classroom. The affordances (e.g., portability, engagement, context-sensitivity) of these tools may have an impact on the following WTC antecedents: perceived competence, reduced L2 anxiety, security, …

More Than A Feeling: Emotion And The First Amendment, Rebecca Tushnet Jan 2014

More Than A Feeling: Emotion And The First Amendment, Rebecca Tushnet

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

First Amendment law has generally been leery of government attempts to change the marketplace of emotions—except when it has not been. Scientific evidence indicates that emotion and rationality are not opposed, as the law often presumes, but rather inextricably linked. There is no judgment, whether moral or otherwise, without emotions to guide our choices. Judicial failure to grapple with this reality has produced some puzzles in the law.

Part I of this Symposium contribution examines the intersection of private law, the First Amendment, and attempts to manipulate and control emotions. Only false factual statements can defame, not mere derogatory opinions. …

Artificial Meaning, Lawrence B. Solum Jan 2014

Artificial Meaning, Lawrence B. Solum

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This Essay investigates the concept of artificial meaning, meanings produced by entities other than individual natural persons. That investigation begins in Part I with a preliminary inquiry into the meaning of “meaning,” in which the concept of meaning is disambiguated. The relevant sense of “meaning” for the purpose of this inquiry is captured by the idea of communicative content, although the phrase “linguistic meaning” is also a rough equivalent. Part II presents a thought experiment, The Chinese Intersection, which investigates the creation of artificial meaning produced by an AI that creates legal rules for the regulation of a hyper-complex conflux …

Charitable Giving, Tax Expenditures, And Direct Spending In The United States And The European Union, Lilian V. Faulhaber Jan 2014

Charitable Giving, Tax Expenditures, And Direct Spending In The United States And The European Union, Lilian V. Faulhaber

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This Article compares the ways in which the United States and the European Union limit the ability of state-level entities to subsidize their own residents, whether through direct subsidies or through tax expenditures. It uses four recent charitable giving cases decided by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) to illustrate the ECJ’s evolving tax expenditure jurisprudence and argues that, while this jurisprudence may suggest a new and promising model for fiscal federalism, it may also have negative social policy implications. It also points out that the court analyzes direct spending and tax expenditures under different rubrics despite their economic equivalence …

"What Is Peoria For?": Reading As Spiritual Practice In David Foster Wallace's The Pale King, Jeremy Reed Jan 2014

"What Is Peoria For?": Reading As Spiritual Practice In David Foster Wallace's The Pale King, Jeremy Reed

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Since its publication in 2011, critics have written about David Foster Wallace’s final, unfinished novel, The Pale King, by looking for resonances with his career-long interests of irony, alienation, and the text’s relation to the reader, but few have written of his final fiction as exhibiting a new approach to these topics. To further such criticism, I argue that in The Pale King Wallace uses new means – religious, and specifically mystic, vocabularies of experience – to seek ethical practices for living in a period heavily influenced by Postmodern irony. In the process, Wallace’s characters end up advocating a mystical …

Technology And Wonder In Thirteenth-Century Iberia And Beyond, Christopher B. Swift Jan 2014

Technology And Wonder In Thirteenth-Century Iberia And Beyond, Christopher B. Swift

Publications and Research

As the desire for affective experiences of the sacred increased in communities across Europe in the late Middle Ages, the Christian faithful crafted lifelike, mechanized figures of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and saints for use in religious festivals. Although each devotional culture evidences unique body/object relationships and meanings, in general animated ritual objects encouraged lay participation in the celebration of saints and the Passion by engaging the senses, and, consequently, an emotional sense of God. In this essay I investigate the ritual alliances between moveable, prop-like saints and their Iberian devotees, in particular the performative meanings that arose from encounters …

Keep Calm And Carry On, René Reich-Graefe Jan 2014

Keep Calm And Carry On, René Reich-Graefe

Faculty Scholarship

This Essay examines some of the hard data available for today’s legal market and develops very basic forecasts and hypotheses about what the future will bring for the U.S. legal profession during the next decades. In conclusion, it projects that recent law school graduates and current and future law students are standing at the threshold of the most robust legal market that ever existed in this country—a legal market which will grow, exist for, and coincide with, their entire professional careers. Using admittedly back-of-the-envelope math based on current trends affecting the legal market (in particular, lawyer retirements, population growth, and …

The aim of this study was to survey the bacterial diversity of Amblyomma maculatum Koch, 1844, and characterize its infection with Rickettsia parkeri. Pyrosequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA was used to determine the total bacterial population in A. maculatum. Pyrosequencing analysis identified Rickettsia in A. maculatum midguts, salivary glands, and saliva, which indicates successful trafficking in the arthropod vector. The identity of Rickettsia spp. was determined based on sequencing the rickettsial outer membrane protein A (rompA) gene. The sequence homology search revealed the presence of R. parkeri, Rickettsia amblyommii, and Rickettsia endosymbiont of …

The Trees, My Lungs: Self Psychology And The Natural World At An American Buddhist Center, Daniel S. Capper Jan 2014

The Trees, My Lungs: Self Psychology And The Natural World At An American Buddhist Center, Daniel S. Capper

Faculty Publications

This study employs ethnographic field data to trace a dialogue between the self psychological concept of the selfobject and experiences regarding the concept of “interbeing” at a Vietnamese Buddhist monastery in the United States. The dialogue develops an understanding of human experiences with the nonhuman natural world which are tensive, liminal, and nondual. From the dialogue I find that the selfobject concept, when applied to this form of Buddhism, must be inclusive enough to embrace relationships with animals, stones, and other natural forms. The dialogue further delineates a self psychological methodology for examining religions in their interactions with natural forms.

Effects Of Landscape Composition And Configuration On Migrating Songbirds: Inference From An Individual-Based Model, Emily B. Cohen, Scott M. Pearson, Frank R. Moore Jan 2014

Effects Of Landscape Composition And Configuration On Migrating Songbirds: Inference From An Individual-Based Model, Emily B. Cohen, Scott M. Pearson, Frank R. Moore

Faculty Publications

The behavior of long-distance migrants during stopover is constrained by the need to quickly and safely replenish energetic reserves. Replenishing fuel stores at stopover sites requires adjusting to unfamiliar landscapes with little to no information about the distribution of resources. Despite their critical importance to the success of songbird migration, the effects of landscape composition and configuration on fuel deposition rates (FDR [g/d]), the currency of migration, has not been tested empirically. Our objectives were to understand the effects of heterogeneous landscapes on FDR of forest-dwelling songbirds during spring migration. The results of field experiments were used to parameterize a …

Interspecific Competition Of A New Invasive Mosquito, Culex Coronator, And Two Container Mosquitoes, Aedes Albopictus And Cx. Quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae), Across Different Detritus Environments, D. A. Yee, J. F. Skiff Jan 2014

Interspecific Competition Of A New Invasive Mosquito, Culex Coronator, And Two Container Mosquitoes, Aedes Albopictus And Cx. Quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae), Across Different Detritus Environments, D. A. Yee, J. F. Skiff

Faculty Publications

The mosquito Culex coronator (Dyar and Knab) (Diptera: Culicidae) has undergone rapid range expansion in the United States since 2003, with its historical distribution in the southwest expanding eastward to the Atlantic coast. Although Cx. coronator nominally use small natural aquatic habitats for development, the use of containers (e.g., tires) makes it potentially important as container invasive. To determine the potential ecological effects of Cx. coronator on resident container species, we conducted a laboratory experiment to assess its competitive ability with two common tire-inhabiting species, Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) (Diptera: Culicidae). Larvae were reared under a factorial …

Importation Of Exotic Ticks And Tick-Borne Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae Into The United States By Migrating Songbirds, Nabanita Mukherjee, Lorenza Beati, Michael Sellers, Laquita Burton, Steven Adamson, Richard G. Robbins, Frank Moore, Shahid Karim Jan 2014

Importation Of Exotic Ticks And Tick-Borne Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae Into The United States By Migrating Songbirds, Nabanita Mukherjee, Lorenza Beati, Michael Sellers, Laquita Burton, Steven Adamson, Richard G. Robbins, Frank Moore, Shahid Karim

Faculty Publications

Birds are capable of carrying ticks and, consequently, tick-transmitted microorganisms over long distances and across geographical barriers such as oceans and deserts. Ticks are hosts for several species of spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR), which can be transmitted to vertebrates during blood meals. In this study, the prevalence of this group of rickettsiae was examined in ticks infesting migratory songbirds by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). During the 2009 and 2010 spring migration season, 2064 northward-migrating passerine songbirds were examined for ticks at Johnson Bayou, Louisiana. A total of 91 ticks was removed from 35 individual songbirds for tick species …

Charity At Work: Proposing A Charitable Flexible Spending Account, Alyssa A. Dirusso Jan 2014

Charity At Work: Proposing A Charitable Flexible Spending Account, Alyssa A. Dirusso

Utah Law Review

The current federal system of tax law, in attempting to encourage the shift of assets from private individuals to charitable organizations, fails to reach significant portions of Americans. Not all donors are equal in the eyes of the law; donors with particular demographic characteristics—ranging from income, to race, to state of residence—are more likely to itemize than others. Despite its aim to reflect a pluralistic society, the charitable deduction sanctions the privileging of one-third of American voices over the rest. If taxes are ballots, the election is rigged.

Physiological, Biochemical, And Molecular Responses To Copper Stress In Different Strains Of The Model Brown Alga Ectocarpus Siliculosus, Claudio Sáez Avaria

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Brown algae have been the focus of metal ecotoxicology research for over 60 years, mainly because of their high metal accumulation capacity and reputed resistance. Now that Ectocarpus siliculosus has been positioned as a model for the study of brown algae, and that the genome has been recently sequenced and annotated, new lines of research have been made possible on these ecologically and economically important organisms, including the field of ecotoxicology. Several strains of E. siliculosus have been collected and isolated from locations around the world, thus providing the opportunity to study inter-population differences in their responses to environmental stress. …

Bioaccumulation And Sub-Lethal Effects Of Intermittent And Continuous Exposure To Metals On The Marine Mussel, Mytilus Galloprovincialis, Dokuboba Amachree Jan 2014

Bioaccumulation And Sub-Lethal Effects Of Intermittent And Continuous Exposure To Metals On The Marine Mussel, Mytilus Galloprovincialis, Dokuboba Amachree

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Aquatic organisms experience intermittent exposure to contaminants. The hazard from such discontinuous exposure may not simply be predicted from existing continuous exposure. Little is known about the bioaccumulation responses of shellfish to metals during intermittent compared to the continuous exposure counterparts. This study was designed to compare the bioaccumulation responses of two metals (Cd and Hg) singly (Chapters 3 and 4) or mixtures (Chapters 5 and 6) during continuous and intermittent exposure. Responses were examined using a multi-assay approach in areas of oxidative stress, osmoregulation, haematology and organ pathology. Tissue metal concentrations were highest in the gill and digestive gland …
