The past few decades have been witness to a number of important developments with respect to the global intellectual property (IP) system, including shifts in focus between multilateralism and bilateralism/regionalism; growing recognition of the various ways in which IP intersects with and impacts areas including human rights, development, trade, and social justice; broad acknowledgement of the economic value of many IP rights; and important theoretical interventions that have challenged the values underlying the global IP system.
These developments have occurred alongside several other events, changes, and crises that have altered the landscape of our global communities. Chief among them are …

Thinking Differently: Creating Spaces Of Autonomy For The Revitalization Of Indigenous Legal Traditions In The Context Of Copyright, Johnny Mack, Graham Reynolds

There is an urgent need to think differently. Colonialism, in its settler variant, has developed new and particularly dangerous strategies to advance its dual imperatives of the dispossession of Indigenous peoples and the erasure of Indigeneity as a politicized identity construct with a legitimate claim to law. This goal is advanced today through rights frameworks, which have generated a worrisome platform to support the logic of elimination by drawing Indigenous calls for autonomy, self-determination, and sovereignty into a settler colonial framework of authority. In this chapter, we highlight how these strategies function in the context of Canadian copyright law. Canadian …

The evolution of web applications relies on iterative code modifications, a process that is traditionally manual and time-consuming. While Large Language Models (LLMs) can generate UI code, their ability to edit existing code from new design requirements (e.g., ”center the logo”) remains a challenge. This is largely due to the absence of large-scale, high-quality tuning data to align model performance with human expectations. In this paper, we introduce a novel, automated data generation pipeline that uses LLMs to synthesize a high-quality fine-tuning dataset for web editing, named Instruct4Edit. Our approach generates diverse instructions, applies the corresponding code modifications, and performs …

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance on the design-to-code task, i.e., generating UI code from UI mock-ups. However, existing benchmarks only contain static web pages for evaluation and ignore the dynamic interaction, limiting the practicality, usability and user engagement of the generated webpages. To bridge these gaps, we present the first systematic investigation of MLLMs in generating interactive webpages. Specifically, we formulate the Interaction-to-Code task and establish the Interaction2Code benchmark, encompassing 127 unique webpages and 374 distinct interactions across 15 webpage types and 31 interaction categories. Through comprehensive experiments utilizing state-of-theart (SOTA) MLLMs, evaluated via both automatic …

Consumers Stabilize Grassland Ecosystem Functions By Destabilizing Belowground Communities Under Abiotic Stress, Jane M. Lucas, Michelle L. Budny, Nathan P. Lemoine
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Consumers play a critical role in mediating plant and ecosystem responses to abiotic stress, yet their influence on belowground processes under changing environmental conditions remains underexplored. Insect consumers are vital components of grassland ecosystems that can shape ecosystem function and stability by mitigating how plant and microbial communities respond to abiotic stress, like drought. This study investigates how small-bodied consumers influence the magnitude and stability of grassland belowground functions across gradients of abiotic stress. We conducted a fully factorial field experiment manipulating consumer presence and induced drought over a growing season. Our results reveal that the presence of consumers stabilizes …

Enhancing Concrete Self-Healing Using Wastewater Bacteria Impregnated In Pumice Lightweight Aggregates, Mamoun Alqedra, Kamal El Kahlout, Ahmed El Refai, Mahmoud El Hessi, Muhammad Radwan, Waleed Iky
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Self-healing concrete presents a promising solution to counter the degradation of concrete structures caused by cracks and damage. This innovative mechanism employs the concrete's capacity to autonomously repair its cracks, effectively extending the lifespan of structures and reducing maintenance costs. Particularly in regions facing water scarcity, such as the Middle East and North African countries, the utilization of wastewater holds significant importance. This study investigates the self healing abilities of wastewater bacteria infused into lightweight pumice aggregates within concrete. Wastewater contains diverse bacteria, microorganisms, and oxygen—essential components for the self-healing process. Wastewater sourced from the North Gaza Emergency Sewage Treatment …

From "Pata Pata" To Come Back, Africa: Miriam Makeba And Her Fight Against Apartheid, 1953-1990, Maddie Heiser
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Perhaps one of the most notorious periods in African history was that of Apartheid – a system of racial, political, social, and economic discrimination placed upon the non-white majority of South Africa. Beginning in 1948 and lasting until the early 1990s, Apartheid marked a significant transformation in not only African liberation movements but also those happening across the globe, including the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. While the efforts to overcome Apartheid and empower the overall messages of African liberation and solidarity are well-documented, there are several methods of achieving these goals that have been unfortunately overlooked. Figures …

Living Property, Joseph William Singer
Living Property, Joseph William Singer
Seattle University Law Review
The Supreme Court has increasingly defined property rights that are per se exempt from regulation in the absence of compensation, most recently in Cedar Point Nursery v. Hassid (2021) and Tyler v. Hennepin County (2023). The Court claims that it can identify property rights that are categorically protected from regulation by reference to history, tradition, and precedent. Yet this approach is oddly ahistorical; it is inconsistent with the fact that property law changed dramatically over U.S. history, as well as varying tremendously among the states. It is also inconsistent with the historical context of the Founding era. At that time, …
The Roots Of Credit Inequality, Andrea Freeman
The Roots Of Credit Inequality, Andrea Freeman
Seattle University Law Review
Debt oppression began before the United States became a country. Settlers enslaved Africans and Indigenous people, treating them as property that they could buy and sell for their economic and personal benefit. When enslavement became illegal, new economic systems and laws that included sharecropping, Black Codes, and Jim Crow kept Black people in servitude. Laws that prohibited enslaved people from owning property or selling goods to white people evolved into restrictions on Black people’s occupations and market participation, both formal and informal. When Black entrepreneurs overcame these obstacles and built wealth within Black business enclaves, white people enforced their racist …

“A Plain Denial”: Reclaiming Equal Protection In American Juvenile Law, Addie C. Rolnick, David S. Tanenhaus, Justin Iverson, Danielle L. Silvestri
Seattle University Law Review
Juvenile courts are based on the premise that children are different from adults and should therefore be treated differently. Children may be treated more informally by courts, punished for different purposes, and brought before the court for different behaviors. Since In re Gault, the Supreme Court has been clear that there are limits to how different juvenile courts can be. Juveniles are entitled to many of the same procedural protections as adult criminal defendants, although the Court has preserved some procedural differences where it has determined that their benefit is outweighed by the need to preserve the informality, flexibility, …

Redefining Section 230 Immunity, Lucas Dini
Redefining Section 230 Immunity, Lucas Dini
Seattle University Law Review
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act has provided broad immunity to online platforms for third-party content which was the foundation for the internet's growth. However, the rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to produce algorithms to curate content to users of online services has blurred the line between being a passive host of third party content and active editorial control. This Note examines the legal, policy, and constitutional implications of applying Section 230 immunity to platforms that use AI to curate and promote third-party content. This analysis argues that algorithmic promotion of third-party content constitutes a platform's …
Overcrowding The System: Rethinking Juvenile Justice In Washington State, Mckenna White
Overcrowding The System: Rethinking Juvenile Justice In Washington State, Mckenna White
Seattle University Law Review
The recent crisis at Green Hill School highlights the detrimental consequences of severe overcrowding in Washington State’s Juvenile Rehabilitation system—a problem exacerbated by the implementation of the JR to 25 legislation. This Note argues that the juvenile rehabilitation system, which is currently struggling to manage a wide age range of offenders, necessitates a fundamental rethinking of juvenile justice practices. By examining neurological research indicating continued brain development into the mid-twenties, along with the high prevalence of trauma among justice-involved youth, this Note proposes the creation of a dedicated third system of care within the Department of Children, Youth, and Families …

Oral history given to the Winnebago from the Algonquian Recounted by Tyler “Hųųcpįga” LaMere
The legend tells of how the song of Wasjįk (Rabbit) could not be silenced. One day, all the animal chiefs gathered to decide how to live and work together. As the council tried to start their meeting, they were interrupted by Wasjįk’s singing and dancing outside the lodge. Each time a chief went out to quiet Wasjik by force, they were unsuccessful. Kereju (Hawk) took his arm so he could not drum, but Wasjįk sang again and used his foot to drum. Hųc (Bear) took Wasjįk’s …
Data For "What Are The Various Roles And Perceptions Of Squirrels In Alaska Native Cultures? A Proof-Of-Concept Using Machine Learning With Insights From Interviews With Alaska Native Communities", Moriz Steiner
Faculty
Alaska Native communities have lived in Alaska for over 15,000 years, developing sustainable subsistence activities and a close relationship with the surrounding landscape, flora, and fauna. In this study, I explored the role(s) squirrels play in this relationship across different Alaska Native communities in interior and western Alaska. I carried out six interviews with Alaska Native ‘users’ and trappers/ hunters to assess their perception of squirrel fur values, hunting interests, spiritual links, and as food. To describe and analyze the interviews and underlying signals therein, I use a novel Machine Learning framework with two algorithms (CART (Classification and Regression Trees), …

Structure And Legitimation In Capitalism: Law, Power, And Justice In Market Society, Yochai Benkler
Structure And Legitimation In Capitalism: Law, Power, And Justice In Market Society, Yochai Benkler
Law and Contemporary Problems
This article introduces a new institutional political economy of capitalism that explains the distinctive dynamics that drive sustained productivity growth, recurring social dislocation, and persistent patterns of exploitation in modern market societies. It then analyzes the role of law in structuring social relations of production in capitalism and legitimating those structures so as to stabilize the asymmetric social relations they create. Law structures social relations of production by allocating control over labor, knowledge, natural resources, and technology, as used for purposes of both subsistence and market-oriented production, as well coordination and cooperation in labor and investment processes, access to means …

Literature Across Generations; The Old Javanese Epic Poem "Bhāratayuddha" Translated Into Modern Javanese, Keiko Kamiishi
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a revival movement of classical Javanese (Kawi) literature arose in the royal courts of south Central Java. As part of this revival, Old Javanese literary works were rewritten in Modern Javanese, giving Javanese people at that time renewed access to their literary heritage. The paper deals with a specific manuscript, Add MS 12279 in the British Library, which contains Modern Javanese word-for-word and line-for-line “translations” inserted between lines of the Old Javanese epic poem Bhāratayuddha. The unique structure of the manuscript reveals the translation strategies used to address the challenges of balancing the …

Establishing A Framework Of Best Management Practices For Sustainable Water Quality: Integration Of Technology And Remote Sensing, Mason L. Marcantel
LSU Master's Theses
Water quality security is a complex management issue that is constantly challenged by factors of seasonal variability in climate change, urban population growth, and agricultural intensification. These factors warrant the need for innovative technological adaptations to management practices that integrate remote monitoring, predictive modeling, and sustainable resource utilization. This study establishes a framework for sustainable water quality practices through the integration of remote sensing technology for urban wastewater treatment and agricultural irrigation systems. This dual-site research study explores seasonal water quality dynamics and technological interventions to create a more proactive approach to water quality security.
In the first study, water …
