3,4,5-Trichloroaniline Nephrotoxicity In Vitro: Potential Role Of Free Radicals And Renal Biotransformation, Christopher Racine, Dakota Ward, Dianne K. Anestis, Travis Ferguson, Deborah Preston, Gary O. Rankin
Pharmaceutical Science and Research
Chloroanilines are widely used in the manufacture of drugs, pesticides and industrial intermediates. Among the trichloroanilines, 3,4,5-trichloroaniline (TCA) is the most potent nephrotoxicant in vivo. The purpose of this study was to examine the nephrotoxic potential of TCA in vitro and to determine if renal biotransformation and/or free radicals contributed to TCA cytotoxicity using isolated renal cortical cells (IRCC) from male Fischer 344 rats as the animal model. IRCC (~4 million cells/mL; 3 mL) were incubated with TCA (0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 or 1.0 mM) for 60–120 min. In some experiments, IRCC were pretreated with an antioxidant or a …

Task-Based Robotic Grasp Planning, Yun Lin
Task-Based Robotic Grasp Planning, Yun Lin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Grasp should be selected intelligently to fulfill different stability properties and manipulative requirements. Currently, most grasping approaches consider only pick-and-place tasks without any physical interaction with other objects or the environment, which are common in an industry setting with limited uncertainty. When robots move to our daily-living environment and perform a broad range of tasks in an unstructured environment, all sorts of physical interactions will occur, which will result in random physical interactive wrenches: forces and torques on the tool.
In addition, for a tool to perform a required task, certain motions need to occur. We call it "functional tool …

Fabrication Of 3d Ultrafine Fibrous Protein Structures Via Freeze-Drying, Yiling Huang
Fabrication Of 3d Ultrafine Fibrous Protein Structures Via Freeze-Drying, Yiling Huang
Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this thesis, ultrafine fibrous 3D matrices were fabricated using three different proteins (soy protein, wool keratin, and chicken feather keratin) via freeze-drying. Protein matrices are preferable for tissue engineering compared to matrices made from synthetic material because of their similarity to native extracellular matrices. Due to their cell-binding motifs, natural proteins are also recognized as more biocompatible compared. Freeze-drying, which is a simple method used to produce 3D sponge matrices, was employed in this study to fabricate 3D fibrous matrices in a controlled manner. The inner structures of the 3D matrices fabricated ranged from film to fibers, and the …

SWMU 76 - Mixed Waste Landfill - Corrective Action
The Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE) and Sandia Corporation (Sandia) have submitted a request for a Class 3 Modification to Module IV of Hazardous Waste Permit NM5890110518-1 (the Permit). DOE and Sandia are requesting that the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) designate solid waste management unit (SWMU) 76 as approved for Corrective Action Complete status. NMED made a preliminary determination in October 2014 that corrective action is complete at this SWMU. SWMU 76, known as the Mixed Waste Landfill (MWL), is a 2.6-acre site at Sandia National Laboratories, located on Kirtland Air Force Base immediately southeast of Albuquerque, …

All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), the main active metabolite of vitamin A, is a powerful signaling molecule that regulates large-scale morphogenetic processes during vertebrate embryonic development, but is also involved post-natally in regulating neural plasticity and cognition. In songbirds, it plays an important role in the maturation of learned song. The distribution of the ATRA-synthesizing enzyme, zRalDH, and of ATRA receptors (RARs) have been described, but information on the distribution of other components of the retinoid signaling pathway is still lacking. To address this gap, we have determined the expression patterns of two obligatory RAR co-receptors, the retinoid X receptors (RXR) …

The Chicago Teachers Strike And Its Public, Amy B. Shuffelton
Education and Culture
This article considers the 2012 Chicago Teachers Strike in light of John Dewey's The Public and Its Problems. It engages Dewey's conceptualization of practical reason to challenge the educational reform movement's commitment to technocratic decision-making.
The Democratic Public To Be Brought Into Existence And Education As Secularization, Stefano Oliverio
The Democratic Public To Be Brought Into Existence And Education As Secularization, Stefano Oliverio
Education and Culture
The paper tackles the fundamental question of whether democracy has by now been turned into a meaningless liturgy of a past religion and proposes a Deweyan answer which points to the need to fully realize modernity in order to bring into existence a genuine democracy. By deploying an archaeological reading of The Public and Its Problems and, in particular, of the key notion of the ‘official,’ it is shown how giving birth to an authentically democratic public demands coming to terms with a re-signification of the idea of transubstantiation, fully valorising education as communication and promoting a ‘secularized’ community. This …
