A Novel Role For Nf-Κb In Proximal T Cell Signaling, Crystina Bronk Watson
A Novel Role For Nf-Κb In Proximal T Cell Signaling, Crystina Bronk Watson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The interrogation of T cell signaling over the past fifty years has led to the discovery of amazingly intricate cascade networks and elaborate descriptions of individual proteins' domains and functions. A complex landscape has been rendered in which proteins relay messages from the extracellular ligation of the TCR by a cognate peptide loaded MHC via changes in sub-cellular location, phosphorylation, and binding affinities and partners to enact nuclear localization of three key transcription factors required for cellular effector function and proliferation: AP-1, NF-AT, and NF-κB. Dogma has favored activation of each of these transcription regulating elements to be a linear …

An Analysis Of Variables Influencing Parental Choices Of Treatments For Their Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kimberly Frame
An Analysis Of Variables Influencing Parental Choices Of Treatments For Their Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kimberly Frame
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Autism is a diagnosis that often leaves families faced with more questions than answers. With a multitude of choices for possible treatments for a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), it is important to understand parental perceptions of what they report as reasons for choosing ASD treatments for their child. The following research used a mixed methods approach in an effort to identify these reasons. This study used a survey that was available online through autism related communities. The quantitative analysis consisted of a Fischer’s Exact test. The results for these tests indicated that there were no correlations between the …
A Time And Place For Premarital Desire: Positive Uses Of Lust In Edmund Spenser’S The Faerie Queene, Rachel Balzar
A Time And Place For Premarital Desire: Positive Uses Of Lust In Edmund Spenser’S The Faerie Queene, Rachel Balzar
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Lust plays a large role in Edmund Spenser’s famous 1590 poem The Faerie Queene—this much Early Modern scholars can agree on. Surrounding the purpose lust serves in this didactic tale, however, there is a good deal of contention. Some academics argue that Spenser uses his lurid descriptions of lust to reveal to readers their own sinful preferences. Others claim that Spenser uses lust simply to attract an audience. The list of differing interpretations of the text goes on. But one overarching theme can be seen in all of these unique analyses of lust: each operates on the assumption that …

The Bacterial Pathogen Yersinia Creates A Complex Structure On The Surface Of Macrophages, Wael Bahnan
The Bacterial Pathogen Yersinia Creates A Complex Structure On The Surface Of Macrophages, Wael Bahnan
Open Access Dissertations
During an infectious process, bacterial pathogens interact with host innate immune cells. These innate cells (primarily macrophages) play a major role in the antimicrobial defense and bacterial clearance. In this work, we identify the niche which Yersinia pseudotuberculosis creates during macrophage contact. We show that the pYV virulence plasmid is essential for the ability of the bacterium to create an acidified, partially enclosed, and durable niche along the macrophage surface. These compartments are uncoupled from the normal host cell endocytic trafficking pathway and are exposed to the extracellular medium. We present data which shows that the formation of the Yersinia …

The purpose of this study is to provide teachers, students, coaches and professional performers with a performance guide to the habaneras, romanzas and canciónes of Eduardo Sánchez de Fuentes. Sánchez de Fuentes wrote approximately 200 songs in his lifetime. His compositional style has proven to be appropriate for singers of all levels. Due to lack of accessibility, his music is not as well-known as other Spanish language composers. This study includes a historical overview of the political relationship between the United States and Cuba and the history and development of Cuban music. The overview traces events relevant to Sánchez de …

Evolution of insect resistance to transgenic crops containing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) genes is a serious threat to the sustainability of this technology. However, field resistance related to the reduced efficacy of Bt maize has not been documented in any lepidopteran pest in the mainland U.S. after 18 years of intensive Bt maize planting. Here we report compelling evidence of field resistance in the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), to Cry1F maize (TC 3507) in the southeastern region of the U.S. An F2 screen showed a surprisingly high (0.293) Cry1F resistance allele frequency in a population collected in 2011 from …

BACKGROUND: Chronic Pancreatitis (CP) is a complex and multifactorial syndrome. Many contributing factors result in development of dysfunctional pain in a significant number of patients. Drugs developed to treat a variety of pain states fall short of providing effective analgesia for patients with chronic pancreatitis, often providing minimal to partial pain relief over time with significant side effects. Recently, availability of selective pharmacological tools has enabled great advances in our knowledge of the role of the cannabinoid receptors in pathophysiology. In particular, cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) has emerged as an attractive target for management of chronic pain, as demonstrated in …

Preventing Complications Associated With Tube Feedings, Norma Metheny
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The session will include a discussion of evidence to support or refute a variety of commonly used methods to determine feeding tube placement. Among the methods to be evaluated are: pH testing of feeding aspirates, observing the appearance of feeding tube aspirates, auscultation for a bubbling sound over the epigastric region as air is injected through the tube, electromagnetic monitoring, and carbon dioxide detection devices. Because the pH method is the most widely recommended bedside placement method, factors that may affect its accuracy will be reviewed; among these are the use of gastric acid inhibitors and recent feedings. Variations in …

Robbing The Cradle: An Analysis Of Trends In Infant Abduction In The United States, Teresa W. Ryan
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Monday, July 28, 2014: Purpose: Abduction of an infant by a nonfamily member is an extremely rare event but it is an event that can devastate families and caregivers alike. Hospitals and birthing centers in the United States have successfully employed procedures, from parental education to high-tech security perimeters, to thwart infant abductions so that while abductions from hospital or other healthcare facilities has decreased, abductions from the home or public places, has risen and often times the perpetrators have resorted to violence to overcome and incapacitate parents. Of note is the rise in 'fetal abductions', where …

Nonpolitical Images Evoke Neural Predictors Of Political Ideology, Woo-Young Ahn, Kenneth T. Kishida, Xiaosi Gu, Terry Lohrenz, Ann Harvey, John R. Alford, Kevin B. Smith, Gideon Yaffe, John R. Hibbing, Peter Dayan, P. Read Montague
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Political ideologies summarize dimensions of life that define how a person organizes their public and private behavior, including their attitudes associated with sex, family, education, and personal autonomy [1, 2]. Despite the abstract nature of such sensibilities, fundamental features of political ideology have been found to be deeply connected to basic biological mechanisms [3–7] that may serve to defend against environmental challenges like contamination and physical threat [8–12]. These results invite the provocative claim that neural responses to nonpolitical stimuli (like contaminated food or physical threats) should be highly predictive of abstract political opinions (like attitudes toward gun control and …

Success Against All Odds Lessons Learned From Successful, Impoverished Students, Amanda L. King
Senior Honors Theses
The effects of poverty on students’ education have been well documented and a positive correlation can be seen between these effects and their academic success. What is unclear, however, are the exceptions to this correlation. How do students from low-socio-economic status (SES) families succeed despite the seemingly insurmountable odds they face? The literature from a wide variety of longitudinal—and interview-based studies from the past three decades suggests that character traits such as persistence, determination, and curiosity are key to their success. Schools with a majority student body from low-SES homes have found success in meeting and exceeding state standards through …

"I'D Rather Dance Outside": A Phenomenological Examination Of Youth Experiences In Outdoor, Noncompetitive Physical Activity, Richard W. Christiana, Marsha Davis, Melissa Freeman
The Qualitative Report
Research has shown that youth with low levels of fitness or little interest in organized sports and traditional physical education are more likely to participate in noncompetitive outdoor physical activity. However, little is known about what influences youths’ decisions to participate in these activities. This study examined rural young adolescents’ experiences of participating in noncompetitive outdoor physical activity. In depth qualitative interviews were conducted with young adolescents aged 11-13 years (N = 24) from one rural middle school to elicit detailed descriptions of experiences of participation in outdoor physical activities. Interview transcripts were analyzed inductively and emergent themes related to …

Pathogenic Landscape Of Transboundary Zoonotic Diseases In The Mexico–Us Border Along The Rio Grande, Maria Dolores Esteve-Gassent, Adalberto A. Pérez De León, Dora Romero-Salas, Teresa Patricia Feria-Arroyo, Ramiro Patino, John A. Goolsby
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Transboundary zoonotic diseases, several of which are vector borne, can maintain a dynamic focus and have pathogens circulating in geographic regions encircling multiple geopolitical boundaries. Global change is intensifying transboundary problems, including the spatial variation of the risk and incidence of zoonotic diseases. The complexity of these challenges can be greater in areas where rivers delineate international boundaries and encompass transitions between ecozones. The Rio Grande serves as a natural border between the US State ofTexas and the Mexican States of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, andTamaulipas. Not only do millions of people live in this transboundary region, but also a substantial amount …
