The important human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus [GAS]) produces a hyaluronic acid (HA) capsule that plays critical roles in immune evasion. Previous studies showed that the hasABC operon encoding the capsule biosynthesis enzymes is under the control of a single promoter, P1, which is negatively regulated by the two-component regulatory system CovR/S. In this work, we characterize the sequence upstream of P1 and identify a novel regulatory region controlling transcription of the capsule biosynthesis operon in the M1 serotype strain MGAS2221. This region consists of a promoter, P2, which initiates transcription of a novel small RNA, HasS, an …

Rheumatoid Arthritis In Saudi Arabia, Hani M. Almoallim, Laila A. Alharbi
Rheumatoid Arthritis In Saudi Arabia, Hani M. Almoallim, Laila A. Alharbi
Saudi Medical Journal
The status of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Saudi Arabia (SA) was examined from various perspectives based on a systematic literature review and the authors’ personal experiences. In this regard, database and journal search were conducted to identify studies on RA in SA, yielding a total of 43 articles. Although efforts have been made to promote RA research in SA, current studies mostly represent only a few centers and may not accurately portray the national status of RA care. Notably, biological therapies were introduced early for almost all practicing rheumatologists in SA (government and private). However, no national guidelines regarding the …

Pediatric Air Gun Shot Injury, Ubaid U. Khan, Naglaa M. Kamal, Shazia J. Mirza, Laila M. Sherief
Saudi Medical Journal
Air guns (AGs) use air or another compressed gas to propel a projectile. Different injuries may occur in children due to their body structure, which is less-resistant with thin soft tissue coverage that can be easily penetrated by an AG shot. We present 3 cases of pediatric AG shot injury. The first-case had right lumber deep tissue penetration of AG pallet without internal damage, the second-case had a complex course of pellet into the perineum, and the third-case was shot in the left shoulder. All cases were accidentally shot. The shooters were all children, and relatives of the victims. All …

Learning To Walk In Two Worlds: An Examination Of Soul In My Pedagogy, Colette M. Polite
Learning To Walk In Two Worlds: An Examination Of Soul In My Pedagogy, Colette M. Polite
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
Who exactly is a teacher without soul? The answer is complex. First, this study will explore the concept of soul in education. There are varying cultural, religious and spiritual ways to examine soul. This inquiry does not seek to prove the existence of soul. Its existence is considered to be complex, and even abstract, but exists nonetheless. Soul is explored from a cross-cultural approach, which includes an emphasis on a Native American philosophical worldview and discourse. My approach involves teacher autobiography and auto-narrative to provide insights to teacher identity and the presence of soul in education. This project utilizes métissage …
The Transtheoretical Model And Stages Of Change: Predicting The Accuracy Of The Stages Of Change Scale For Early Education And Care 2.0 Self-Report Form, Lynn M. Lubecki
The Transtheoretical Model And Stages Of Change: Predicting The Accuracy Of The Stages Of Change Scale For Early Education And Care 2.0 Self-Report Form, Lynn M. Lubecki
Education Doctoral
Challenging behaviors in preschool are of great concern to both preschool teachers and the social and emotional development of children who exhibit those behaviors. Evidence-based responses to challenging behaviors exist, but are only effective when implemented as response strategies by preschool teachers in the classroom. Professional development in-services are the often the source of delivery for evidence based practices, and the adoption and implementation of those practices often depend upon teachers’ readiness and willingness to change their practice. For this study, a comparison was conducted between the Stage of Change Scale for Early Care and Education 2.0 self-report and qualitative …
Aminoglycoside-Induced Otoneurotoxicity: Analysis Of Inner Hair Cell Synaptic Plasticity Following Drug Exposure, Matthew M. Abernathy
Aminoglycoside-Induced Otoneurotoxicity: Analysis Of Inner Hair Cell Synaptic Plasticity Following Drug Exposure, Matthew M. Abernathy
Dissertations
Aminoglycoside antibiotics are powerful drugs for combating bacterial infections, but are limited in use due to their ototoxicity. This class of drug targets the auditory hair cells of the cochlea, causing cell death, which leads to a decline in auditory function. In spite of much research aimed at revealing a mechanism of damage, there are no co-therapies available to diminish the ototoxic liability of aminoglycosides. Existing research does show that there may be a neurodegenerative process that contributes to the observed toxicity. In an effort towards clarifying present understanding of issue, this dissertation project was conducted to characterize the neurodegenerative …

Probing The Unfolding And The Stability Of The Last Four Metal Binding Domains Of Wilson Disease Protein Using Circular Dichroism And Novel Spectroscopic Techniques, Ibtesam Yaseen Alja’Afreh
Dissertations
Wilson disease protein is a copper-transporting P1B type ATPase. It has large N-terminal copper binding domain which is composed of six homologous sub-domains. Each of these six domains is ~72 residues and connected to one another by linking regions of various lengths. They all possess similar ferrodoxin fold, and metal-binding motif, MXCXXC.
The need of having six metal binding domains and the manner in which they are communicating with each other is not well understood. To better understand how the last four metal binding domains function, I pursued a detailed biophysical characterization of these domains. Using molecular biology I …

The Neurobehavioral Consequences Of Gestational And Chronic Atrazine Exposure In Male And Female Sprague Dawley Rats, Jennifer L. Walters
Dissertations
The adverse health risks of exposure to the herbicide, atrazine, in humans are not fully understood. Although numerous studies have demonstrated atrazine to be an endocrine disrupter, the neurobehavioral consequences of atrazine exposure have not been thoroughly examined. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of environmentally-relevant levels
of gestational followed by continued chronic atrazine exposure on motor function, learning and memory, anxiety, and striatal dopamine content in rodents. Pregnant Sprague Dawley rats were treated by gavage with 100 µg/kg atrazine (ATZ low), 10 me/kg atrazine (ATZ high), or vehicle on
gestational day l through postnatal day …
Evaluation Of Novel Κappa Opioid Agonists Alone And In Combination With D-Amphetamine On Locomotor Activity In Sprague-Dawley Rats Evaluation Of Novel Κappa Opioid Agonists Alone And In Combination With D-Amphetamine On Locomotor Activity In Sprague-Dawley Rats, Mary Melissa Peet
Dissertations
Stimulant abuse is a widespread problem that often leads to detrimental health and social consequences. Currently, there are no FDA-approved pharmacotherapies available as a treatment option for stimulant abuse or the prevention of relapse. Drugs targeting kappa opioid receptors (KOR) are under investigation as a potential pharmacotherapy. KOR agonists have been shown to modulate dopamine levels within brain reward pathways, thereby producing anti-addictive effects. Traditional KOR agonists unfortunately tend to produce untoward side effects, including sedation, limiting their therapeutic utility. Structurally different from traditional KOR agonists, salvinorin A (salvA) may produce less sedating effects while still exerting anti-addictive properties. SalvA …

The Representation Of Poverty In Great Depression American Literature, Cavel Austin
The Representation Of Poverty In Great Depression American Literature, Cavel Austin
HIM 1990-2015
The objective of this thesis is to explore how American authors represented poverty across different states during the Depression Era. I have chosen to review social reform author John Steinbeck, and proletariat authors, Michael Gold, Meridel Le Sueur, and William Attaway. Before addressing the issues presented in the data collection tools (novels): The Grapes of Wrath, Jews Without Money, The Girl, and Blood on the Forge, I reviewed the fundamentals of the events leading up to the crash of the stock market, which spiraled the United States and the world at large in the greatest Depression ever known. In this …
You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown: An Analysis Of Compassion, Friendship, And Overcoming Obstacles, Jessamyn L. Miller
You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown: An Analysis Of Compassion, Friendship, And Overcoming Obstacles, Jessamyn L. Miller
Master's Theses
Since the late 1960s many things have changed. With the inception of the Internet, much of the world has gone viral––including newspapers. Children rarely find the same joy their parents found in a nostalgic printed Sunday morning comic strip. In addition, societal tragedies have increased with almost daily occurrences highlighted on the news. With an influx of recent tragedies too close to home, this thesis examines arts advocacy facts, anti-bulling campaigns, and the themes of friendship, compassion, and overcoming obstacles within a production of Clark M. Gesner’s musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown [Revised]. Charles M. Schulz’s classic characters …
The Economic Viability Of Cocoa Crop Insurance In Ghana, Justin D. Mckinley
The Economic Viability Of Cocoa Crop Insurance In Ghana, Justin D. Mckinley
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study was motivated by the fact that Ghanaian cocoa producers face lower yields than other main cocoa producing counties which in turn increases food insecurity for smallholder producers. In addition, low yields experienced by Ghanaian producers is a driving factor for forest degradation and deforestation as cocoa producers encroach further into previously undisturbed forests in efforts to increase their incomes. There are currently production methods to achieve higher yields readily available in Ghana; however, many producers choose not to adopt these methods because they are seen as too risky, or simply cannot adopt them due to financial/credit constraints. A …
Constructing Community In The Central Arkansas River Valley: Ceramic Compositional Analysis And Collaborative Archaeology, Rebecca Wiewel
Constructing Community In The Central Arkansas River Valley: Ceramic Compositional Analysis And Collaborative Archaeology, Rebecca Wiewel
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the Central Arkansas River Valley, archaeological investigations of the protohistoric occupation in the Carden Bottoms locality of Yell County, Arkansas suggest the interaction of groups from three adjoining regions at the site (the Central Mississippi Valley, the Lower
Arkansas River Valley, and the Middle Ouachita region). Until now, the analysis of whole ceramic vessels associated with the site (derived from looted contexts) constituted the strongest evidence of this process, but this analysis was based on stylistic cues and macroscopic examination of pastes to discriminate between local and nonlocal wares. This project employed instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) as an …
European Consumers' Attitudes Towards Cisgenic Rice, Anne-Cécile Delwaide
European Consumers' Attitudes Towards Cisgenic Rice, Anne-Cécile Delwaide
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The enhancement of existing plant breeding techniques, such as cisgenesis, allows plant breeders to enhance an existing cultivar quicker and with little to no genetic drag. Cisgenesis is the genetic modification of a recipient plant with natural gene(s) from a sexually compatible plant. Unlike transgenesis, which is the genetic modification of a recipient plant with gene(s) from any non‐plant organism, or from a donor plant that is sexually incompatible with the recipient plant, the results of cisgenesis could occur naturally over time. Currently, both cisgenic and transgenic products are classified as genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and are labeled as such …
Does Who We Are Influence What We Say? The Impact Of Organizational Identity On Responses To Ethical Issues, Amy J. Guerber
Does Who We Are Influence What We Say? The Impact Of Organizational Identity On Responses To Ethical Issues, Amy J. Guerber
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Business organizations frequently face ethical issues which may lead stakeholders to question the competence or integrity of organizational actors. In such cases, the way the organization communicates with its stakeholders can play a critical role in preserving or restoring organizational reputation, financial performance, and trust. Thus, understanding factors that influence organizational communication in the wake of ethical issues is important. Previous research has focused on the impact of situational characteristics on organizational responses and stakeholder reactions to those responses but has not explored the role that organizational characteristics play in shaping firms' responses to ethical issues.
The current study seeks …
Bystanders And Bullying: A Reflective Examination Of College Students' Experiences, Katherine Marie Larsen
Bystanders And Bullying: A Reflective Examination Of College Students' Experiences, Katherine Marie Larsen
Honors Theses
This study examines the individual responses of bystanders to bullying based on situational and personal variables. Using self-report data collected on 935 university students, these variables were used to determine if there was a relationship between the variables and the decision to intervene in a bullying situation for a friend. The results suggested that race, sexual orientation, and direct forms of bullying (physical and cyber bullying) have a relationship between an individual’s choice to intervene in a bullying situation for a friend. The findings failed to support the hypothesis that personal factors such as gender, socio-economic status, and a history …

This study investigates the relationship between television and social perceptions. It uses the television shows Will&Grace, The L Word, Queer as Folk, and Modern Family for rhetorical analysis. Then, it uses the information gained from the analysis to hypothesize how and why these television shows both reflect and affect social perceptions of homosexuality.
Pathogenic Role Of Acrolein In Alcoholic Liver Disease., Wei-Yang (Jeremy) Chen
Pathogenic Role Of Acrolein In Alcoholic Liver Disease., Wei-Yang (Jeremy) Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol is the most socially accepted addictive drug, and it can cause alcoholic liver disease (ALD), which is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and worldwide. Animal and human studies demonstrate that chronic alcohol consumption causes a pro-oxidant environment in the liver and increases hepatic lipid peroxidation and the accumulation of by-products such as acrolein and 4-hydroxynonenal. Acrolein is the most reactive and toxic aldehyde generated through lipid peroxidation. Also, acrolein is a major component of cigarette smoke, and there is increasing evidence that smoking negatively impacts the incidence, severity, and clinical course of chronic …
Pathogenic Role Of Phosphodiesterase 4 (Pde4) In The Development Of Alcohol Induced Hepatic Steatosis., Diana Veronica Avila
Pathogenic Role Of Phosphodiesterase 4 (Pde4) In The Development Of Alcohol Induced Hepatic Steatosis., Diana Veronica Avila
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol induced hepatic steatosis is a significant risk factor for progressive liver disease. Steatotic hepatocytes have increased sensitivity to injury produced by inflammatory cytokines, particularly TNF. Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) has been shown to play a significant role in the regulation of both TNF production and lipid metabolism. However, the role of altered cAMP homeostasis in alcohol mediated hepatic steatosis and injury has not been studied. cAMP levels are tightly regulated by phosphodiesterase family of enzymes. Our recent work demonstrated that increased expression of hepatic PDE4, which specifically hydrolyzes and decreases cAMP levels, plays a pathogenic role in the development …

Prompting Discussion : Writing Prompts, Habits Of Mind, And The Shape Of The Writing Classroom., William Matthew Wiles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Much of the important writing students will be tasked with in their college careers calls upon them to approximate the writing styles academics and professionals use to shape and advance their respective fields. Many disciplinary values are encoded within the such texts. Learning these styles can be difficult for students who lack the experience and ingrained habits that their instructors may take for granted. In most cases, college writers are outsiders peeking in from the outskirts of academic and professional discourse. Also, the “Expert Blind Spot” (Ambrose et. al) can make college instructors oblivious to the nuances of the writing …
Pedagogy : Reconsiderations And Reorientations., John Vance
Pedagogy : Reconsiderations And Reorientations., John Vance
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a critical intervention into the question of student agency. An interdisciplinary project that draws upon philosophy and linguistics, it reviews four major tendencies that have animated composition pedagogy over the last several decades— process theory, social-constructivism, procedural rhetoric, and trans-lingual pedagogies— and identifies some of the key tensions that both motivate and problematize these approaches. First, it examines the debate between Peter Elbow and David Bartholomae, and the interplay between teachers’ authority and student agency. Second, it explores the imbrications between representation and materiality in social constructivism. Third, it uses Alain Badiou’s Being and Event to analyze …
Lunasin Reduces The Melanoma Stem Cell Population In Vitro And Inhibits Tumor Proliferation In Vivo., Christopher Paul Shidal
Lunasin Reduces The Melanoma Stem Cell Population In Vitro And Inhibits Tumor Proliferation In Vivo., Christopher Paul Shidal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lunasin is a 44 amino acid peptide derived from the soybean seed that has been shown to have cancer chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic properties. In this study, we investigated the potential utility of lunasin as a chemotherapeutic in a melanoma model. Initial studies showed that lunasin has little activity against established melanoma cell lines in vitro using adherent culture methods; however, lunasin’s in vitro activity was significantly higher in non-adherent colony-forming assays in soft agar and oncosphere assays. These results led us to investigate whether lunasin selectively affects cancer initiating cells (CIC) that are known to be present in these melanoma …
The Effect Of Infrastructure Changes On Railway Operations., Martin J.R. Schmidt 1966-
The Effect Of Infrastructure Changes On Railway Operations., Martin J.R. Schmidt 1966-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper makes use of standard simulation programs in combination with the tools of applied statistics to simulate railway operations. The purpose of the use of this tool is to evaluate and compare different possible kinds of railway infrastructure, like different types of signaling procedures, different network configuration or operational procedures. A railway system is a logistic network and because of the demand for improved railway operation, much work has been undertaken lately in this scientific field. However the author postulates the hypothesis based on a literature review that in a lot of these works there is a lack of …
The Use Of Surface Cytokines As Biomarkers In B Cell Mediated Autoimmune Diseases, Abby Jones Weldon
The Use Of Surface Cytokines As Biomarkers In B Cell Mediated Autoimmune Diseases, Abby Jones Weldon
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
RA and SLE are B cell-mediated autoimmune diseases dominated by autoantibodies that affect over 1.5 million Americans. Together RA and SLE contribute to over 29 billion in healthcare costs, therefore due to the high financial burden and physical toll of these diseases on the population, there is a critical need to effectively and efficiently diagnose and treat RA and SLE patients. The aim of our studies was to identify biomarkers and drug targets to improve the identification and treatment of RA and SLE patients. As discussed above, APRIL, BAFF and TSLP have been implicated in the pathogenesis of RA and …
The Effect Of Grapes In Mice With Alzheimer's Disease And Brain Injury, Nikita Mistry
The Effect Of Grapes In Mice With Alzheimer's Disease And Brain Injury, Nikita Mistry
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder resulting in cognitive and memory deficits and deposits of amyloid beta (Aβ) in the cortex and hippocampus are thought to be significant contributors to the disease process. Increasing evidence suggests that foods rich in polyphenols, such as pomegranates and grapes, may have neuroprotective effects in both rodents and humans. Our previous research has shown that a pomegranate-enriched diet decreased Aβ plaque load and improved behavior in Tg2576 mice. In this study, we determined whether a grape-enriched diet altered Aβ neuropathology and TBI in PSAPP mice. Mice received either craniotomy or a moderate …
Modulation Of T Lymphocytes By Tumor-Released Survivin, Jessica Marie Jutzy
Modulation Of T Lymphocytes By Tumor-Released Survivin, Jessica Marie Jutzy
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The tumor microenvironment is an area of intense interaction between normal and malignant cells. Factors and cell types within this environment can play a crucial role in the progression or regression of the tumor. Of primary interest are tumor-infiltrating T lymphocytes, which have been shown to have a key role in modifying the dynamics of the tumor microenvironment to promote or prevent tumor growth. While there is much in vitro and in vivo evidence for a modification of the tumor infiltrating T cell population toward a pro-tumor environment, what induces these changes within the tumor microenvironment has remained elusive. Our …
Aberrant Neurogenic And Epigenetic Processes Are Associated With Depression Induced By Developmental Arsenic Exposure, Christina René Tyler
Aberrant Neurogenic And Epigenetic Processes Are Associated With Depression Induced By Developmental Arsenic Exposure, Christina René Tyler
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Arsenic is a pervasive environmental contaminant derived from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Epidemiological evidence supports a correlation between arsenic exposure in drinking water and increased rates of psychiatric disorders, including depression, in exposed populations. Previous studies have established that perinatal exposure to arsenic (through all three trimesters of fetal/neonatal development, DAE) has long-lasting consequences into adulthood including deficits in learning and memory, molecular aberrations in the hypothalamic-adrenal-pituitary (HPA) axis, and depressive-like symptoms in mice. The studies described in this dissertation were designed to assess the impact of DAE on adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) as a possible mechanism of action …
