Elementary Differential Equations With Boundary Value Problems, William F. Trench Dec 2013

Elementary Differential Equations With Boundary Value Problems, William F. Trench

Textbooks Collection

Elementary Differential Equations with Boundary Value Problems is written for students in science, engineering, and mathematics who have completed calculus through partial differentiation. If your syllabus includes Chapter 10 (Linear Systems of Differential Equations), your students should have some prepa- ration in linear algebra.

In writing this book I have been guided by the these principles:

An elementary text should be written so the student can read it with comprehension without too much pain. I have tried to put myself in the student’s place, and have chosen to err on the side of too much detail rather than not enough. …

Transferencias Condicionales Y Políticas De Acción Afirmativa En Latinoamérica: La Diferencia Que Políticas De Inclusión Pueden Hacer, Bernd Reiter, Paula A. Lezama Dec 2013

Transferencias Condicionales Y Políticas De Acción Afirmativa En Latinoamérica: La Diferencia Que Políticas De Inclusión Pueden Hacer, Bernd Reiter, Paula A. Lezama

Government and International Affairs Faculty Publications

This article argues that social inclusion policies are economically efficient because social exclusion is too costly in terms of economic growth and social cohesion. To make this point, we analyze different social inclusion policies, particularly those practiced in Brazil and in Colombia. These are crucial because they highlight the racial dimension of exclusion and the corresponding economic contribution of Affirmative Action policies (AAs) to sustained economic growth and development. Central to social policies aiming at inclusion are educational policies because they render the highest economic medium and long-term return. To demonstrate this effect, we analyzeConditional Cash Transfers (CCTs), a Brazilian …

Validation Of The Simple Activity Measurement Instrument (Sam) Using Heart Rate And Pedometry; Simple Activity Measurement Instrument (Sam) For Measuring Mvpa In Physical Education, Joseph P. Anaya

Graduate Theses

In order to battle obesity in our schools, Physical Education standards are working to become more and more in accordance with the Physical Activity Guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the American College of Sports Medicine. Physical Education teachers would benefit from a tool that measures the amount and type of activity that students are involved in while they are in Physical Education. Many of the instruments that teachers use to assess students’ physical activity are too expensive, too difficult and can be time consuming. The purpose of the current study was to test …

Investigation Of The Role Of Tor And Nutrient Restriction On Lifespan Of Arabidopsis Thaliana, Debashree Banerjee Dec 2013

Investigation Of The Role Of Tor And Nutrient Restriction On Lifespan Of Arabidopsis Thaliana, Debashree Banerjee

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

The Target of Rapamycin (TOR) kinase is evolutionarily conserved and is a key regulator, controlling many cellular functions to promote survival and growth in all eukaryotes. Several model organisms have indicated a relationship between TOR signaling and life expectancy, such as yeast, fruit flies and mice. Abundant nutrient availability promotes rapid growth and development, whereas depletion of nutrients reduces the activity of the pathways that are involved in growth and nutrient processing. This reduction in activity increases life expectancy, which is supported by evolutionary theories. The confirmed presence of the TOR homolog (a major regulator of growth and cell proliferation) …

Creating Safe Spaces: Bergson, Affirmation, And The Constitution Of Lgbtq Identity, Timothy Ross Johnston Dec 2013

Creating Safe Spaces: Bergson, Affirmation, And The Constitution Of Lgbtq Identity, Timothy Ross Johnston

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The central claim of this dissertation is that the ability to feel comfortable, both in terms of your identity and in your fluid movement through the world, is the result of what I call affirmative feedback loops. When your environment affirms and reflects your identity back to you, you become comfortable with yourself and in that environment. This affirmation can be as direct as someone explicitly affirming you (for example, when you come out) or it can be as subtle and quotidian as being able to display photos of loved ones in your workspace. I argue that caring for other …

Quantum Critical Behaviors In Magnetic Systems: Yb3pt4, Yfe2al10 And Yb2pt2pb, Liusuo Wu Dec 2013

Quantum Critical Behaviors In Magnetic Systems: Yb3pt4, Yfe2al10 And Yb2pt2pb, Liusuo Wu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Quantum phase transitions have attracted a great deal of interest in the study of condensed matter physics. Normally, this refers to continuous transitions that occur at zero temperature (T = 0), where the correlation length and time scales diverge, and universal scaling is observed close to the Quantum Critical Point (QCP). In this thesis, the search for quantum criticality in the three magnetic compounds: Yb3Pt4, YFe2Al10 and Yb2Pt2Pb will be discussed from different perspectives. | 255 pages

The Chinese Equity Risk Factor Model Based On Heavy Tailed Distributions, And Its Application In Risk Management And Portfolio Optimization, Tianyu Lu Dec 2013

The Chinese Equity Risk Factor Model Based On Heavy Tailed Distributions, And Its Application In Risk Management And Portfolio Optimization, Tianyu Lu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In financial risk and portfolio management, the heavy tailed distributions of one-dimensional asset returns and complex dependence structure among multi-dimensional asset returns are two widely discussed problems. Various distributions, which share the desired properties, such as heavy tails, skewness and kurtosis, have been introduced and applied into practice. On the other hand, factor modeling as a technique of dimension reduction, has been used in multivariate statistical analysis and econometric model building, especially in high-dimensional world of financial risk management In this dissertation, we study these two popular problems in risk and portfolio management. The findings are empirically examined through their …

The Role Of The Ctenophore Mnemiopsis Leidyi In Nutrient Cycling In Long Island Sound, Ny, Laura Mae Treible Dec 2013

The Role Of The Ctenophore Mnemiopsis Leidyi In Nutrient Cycling In Long Island Sound, Ny, Laura Mae Treible

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Gelatinous zooplankton blooms have been increasing in magnitude and frequency globally. Seasonal variations in food availability and temperature can trigger a population bloom and subsequent crash in coastal and estuarine waters. Long Island Sound (LIS) is a highly-productive urban estuary. Due to its proximity to New York City and annual summer hypoxia, there has been substantial focus on anthropogenic nutrient inputs and reductions to LIS. When determining nutrient budgets, an important process is the recycling of nutrients within a system. Gelatinous zooplankton, including the most common species in LIS, the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi, are capable of high rates of nutrient …

Two Essays In Financial Econometrics, Yang Yu Dec 2013

Two Essays In Financial Econometrics, Yang Yu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation research explores two interesting problems in financial econometrics. In part one, we considers the problem of pricing European options in the presence of proportional transaction costs when the underlying stock price follows a jump-diffusion process. Based on utility maximization approach, the option pricing and hedging can be reformulated as a singular stochastic control problem. And furthermore, the value functions of the problem are the solutions of a free boundary problem, in particular, a partial integro-differential equation, under different boundary conditions. And we develop a coupled backward induction algorithm which is based on the connection between the free boundary …

Development Of Microreactor System For In Situ Investigation Of Rock-Brine-Co2 Interactions, Ashley Elizabeth Thompson Dec 2013

Development Of Microreactor System For In Situ Investigation Of Rock-Brine-Co2 Interactions, Ashley Elizabeth Thompson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A microreactor has been developed for in situ, high-energy x-ray diffraction investigations of reaction process between carbon dioxide, brines and rocks. Our design is an evolution of a previous existing reaction cell developed by Diefenbacher et al [1]. | Several changes and improvements have been made to the new cell design: (i) the reactor chamber will be accessible through two points, whereby any combination of gases, liquids or fluids can be injected and investigated,(ii) the CO2 flow and pressure will be controlled through a supercritical fluid pump which allows the cell to operate under a well-controlled pressure and flow …

P12, A Novel Fibronectin Peptide, Promotes Cell Survival By Augmenting Pdgf-Bb Survival Signals, Jia Zhu Dec 2013

P12, A Novel Fibronectin Peptide, Promotes Cell Survival By Augmenting Pdgf-Bb Survival Signals, Jia Zhu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Intensive research has demonstrated that extracellular matrix (ECM) and growth factor (GF) signaling collaborate at many different levels. Through integrins, ECM generates signals that enhance or suppress GF signaling. Some ECM activates GF receptor in the absence of GF. Furthermore, ECM contains growth factor binding-domains (GFBD) that can either sequester or present GF in ways that modify cell response. The ability of ECM to modulate GF signals has important implications in tissue engineering/regenerative medicine, and in devising therapies to treat acute and chronic wounds. Previously in our lab, a novel fibronectin peptide, P12, was shown to bind platelet-derived growth factor …

Physiological, Histological, And Mechanical Characteristics Of Selected Epaxial Muscles In Primates, Md Emranul Huq Dec 2013

Physiological, Histological, And Mechanical Characteristics Of Selected Epaxial Muscles In Primates, Md Emranul Huq

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The spine is the central element of the locomotor skeleton, acting as a link between the head and limbs. However, despite well-documented differences in spinal morphology among primates, we have comparatively little quantitative documentation on the structural characteristics of muscles that move the spine. The primary goals of this investigation were: (i) to identify and characterize morphological and related physiological, histological, and mechanical aspects of selected epaxial muscles in two groups of related but behaviorally distinct primates; and (ii) to investigate if these features could be interpreted in terms of the degree of spinal mobility during locomotion. To these ends, …

Assembly And Inhibition Of Toxic Aî² 42 Oligomers, Darryl Steven Aucoin Dec 2013

Assembly And Inhibition Of Toxic Aî² 42 Oligomers, Darryl Steven Aucoin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The misfolding of the 42-residue amyloid beta protein has been strongly linked to Alzheimer's Disease. Prior to forming the amyloid fibrils typically associated with Alzheimer's Disease, the amyloid beta proteins associate to form a mixture of hexameric and dodecameric oligomers. This work investigates the process by which these proteins associate into oligomers and the mechanism by which different small molecule inhibitors prevent this assembly. NMR spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and size exclusion chromatography were employed to determine the rate at which monomers assemble into hexamers, dodecamers and fibrils, and to correlate these changes in structure with changes in toxicity to …

Algorithms And Structures For Covariance Estimates With Application To Finance, Tengjie Jia Dec 2013

Algorithms And Structures For Covariance Estimates With Application To Finance, Tengjie Jia

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Factor analysis is an important statistical tool used to describe variability among observed, correlated variables in terms of a potentially lower number of unobserved variables which are called factors. Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) has been popular for fitting factor analysis. Among variety of iterative methods that can be used to perform MLE, the EM algorithm is probably one of the most stable in terms of monotonely increasing the likelihood and the easiest to implement. However, in the real world, the rate of convergence of EM could be painfully slow in factor model estimation. In this dissertation, we study two popular …

The Prince's Misleader: The Role Of Falstaff In The Henry Iv Plays, Jennifer Nellis Dec 2013

The Prince's Misleader: The Role Of Falstaff In The Henry Iv Plays, Jennifer Nellis

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Shakespeare's history plays, 1 Henry IV and 2 Henry IV, include the fictional character of Falstaff. This study examines Falstaff's role in the plays, considers his comedic placement in historical events and his role's relation to English nationalism. The study shows Falstaff's unique ability to provide great entertainment while remaining a symbol of evil and immorality, creating a conundrum for audiences. Falstaff's unique role is analyzed including the background of his naming, his relation to the theme of counterfeiting in the plays, the significance of his physical size, and his relationship with the prince which wanes as the two parts …

A Lifetime Of Magical Thinking, Victoria Johnston Boecherer Dec 2013

A Lifetime Of Magical Thinking, Victoria Johnston Boecherer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This project examines how the narrative structure of Joan Didion's two most recent works, The Year of Magical Thinking and Blue Nights, may be used to gain a better understanding of the author herself. Didion's use of the term " magical thinking" is accepted as a reasonable response to the grief she experiences following the deaths of her husband and daughter. An examination of her larger body of work indicates that magical thinking is a tactic of literary invention Didion has relied upon since childhood to restore order to her life when it becomes chaotic and unmanageable. Using Wayne Booth's …

Error Reduction In Parameter Estimation With Case Studies In Risk Measurement And Portfolio Optimization, Xiaoping Zhou Dec 2013

Error Reduction In Parameter Estimation With Case Studies In Risk Measurement And Portfolio Optimization, Xiaoping Zhou

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Parameter estimation is an important step in probabilistic and statistical modeling. Maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) are the classical parameter estimators. However, in the real world, for small samples or ill-posed problems maximum likelihood estimates may be difficult to find through direct numerical optimization, and are unstable and sensitive to outliers. In this dissertation, we study two popular problems in financial risk management and portfolio selection. The first problem is operational risk modeling. Data insufficiency and reporting threshold are two main difficulties in estimating the loss severity distributions in operational risk modeling. We investigate four methods including MLE, expectation-maximization (EM), penalized …

Volumetric Focus+Context Visualization Techniques, Xin Zhao Dec 2013

Volumetric Focus+Context Visualization Techniques, Xin Zhao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis introduces new techniques and applications for volumetric visualization. Focus+context visualization and interaction techniques are used to navigate and interact with objects in information spaces. They provide in-place magnification of a region of the display without consequently losing any context representation. Diverse focus+context visualization techniques are of broad use in different application domains, such as geovirtual environments, navigation and visualization of large graphs or hierarchies, as well as the volume rendering (e.g. | for medical applications). However, how to accurately represent and highlight the focus objects while maximally keeping all the important context information (e.g. | shape features and …
