Limitations On High-Frequency Permeability Of Magnetic Materials, Konstantin N. Rozanov, Marina Koledintseva Dec 2013

Limitations On High-Frequency Permeability Of Magnetic Materials, Konstantin N. Rozanov, Marina Koledintseva

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Engineering of magnetic composites with high microwave permeability is important for EMC/EMI and other applications. One of the challenging problems is to determine constraints on the achievable high-frequency permeability of magnetic composites. The objective of the present paper is to analyze the data available from the literature on the microwave permeability constraints and derive a generalized constraint condition. It is well known that in many practical occasions the actual magnetic frequency dispersion curves differ from the Lorentzian behavior. For these cases, an integral form of the constraint may be useful. Possible applications of the integral constraint are discussed for the …

Reducing Computational Workload Of Electromagnetic Scattered Fields From Electrically Large Quadratic Surface At High Frequency, Yu Mao Wu, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Dec 2013

Reducing Computational Workload Of Electromagnetic Scattered Fields From Electrically Large Quadratic Surface At High Frequency, Yu Mao Wu, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We use the numerical steepest descent path (NSDP) method to calculate the highly oscillatory physical optics (PO) scattered fields on electrically large quadratic surfaces. The resultant phase behaviors of PO integrands are elliptic and hyperbolic on parabolic and saddle quadratic patches, respectively. The proposed method relies on deforming the integration path of the PO integral into the NSDPs on the complex plane. Numerical results of the PO scattered fields on these smooth conducting quadratic surfaces illustrate that the proposed NSDP method gains high accuracy while the workload is frequency independent. © 2013 IEEE.

Chipless Rfid Tags Based On Multiple Band-Rejected Planar Log-Periodic Antennas, Shulabh Gupta, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Dec 2013

Chipless Rfid Tags Based On Multiple Band-Rejected Planar Log-Periodic Antennas, Shulabh Gupta, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A passive chipless Radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag is proposed based on the tailorable band-rejection property of the log-periodic (LP) antennas. The proposed tag principle is successfully demonstrated using full-wave simulations, where the absence and presence of the band-rejection in VSWR and thus radiation gain, is shown to carry the bit information. Due to the large number of dipole radiators on the LP aperture, the proposed tag can easily support large number of codes, providing a potential solution for limited number of bits in conventional chipless tags. © 2013 IEEE.

Degrees Of Freedom Of The Single Antenna Gaussian Wiretap Channel With A Helper Irrespective Of The Number Of Antennas At The Eavesdropper, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener Dec 2013

Degrees Of Freedom Of The Single Antenna Gaussian Wiretap Channel With A Helper Irrespective Of The Number Of Antennas At The Eavesdropper, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Gaussian wiretap channel with a helper, i.e., a cooperative jammer, is considered and its secure degrees of freedom (s.d.o.f.) is computed. Previous work showed that the s.d.o.f. is upper bounded by 1 over 2 in this model when all parties are equipped with one antenna each. In this paper, the more challenging scenario where the eavesdropper has multiple antennas is tackled. Relying on structured signaling and cooperative jamming, specifically, by real interference alignment, it is shown that s.d.o.f. of 1 over 2 is achievable irrespective of the number of antennas the eavesdropper may have as long as the cooperative …

Efficient Routing For Wireless Mesh Networks Using A Backup Path, Amir Esmailpour, Nidal Nasser, Jehad Al Dallal Dec 2013

Efficient Routing For Wireless Mesh Networks Using A Backup Path, Amir Esmailpour, Nidal Nasser, Jehad Al Dallal

Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) has a proven record in providing viable solutions for some of the fundamental issues in wireless networks such as capacity and range limitations. WMN infrastructure includes clusters of Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs) connected through a fixed backbone of mesh routers. The mesh network can be constrained severely due to various reasons, which could result in performance degradation such as a drop in throughput or long delays. Solutions to this problem often focus on multipath or multichannel extensions to the existing ad- hoc routing protocols. In this paper, we propose a novel solution by introducing an alternative …

Experimental And Theoretical Cross Sections For Molecular-Frame Electron-Impact Excitation-Ionization Of D₂, Julian C A Lower, Esam S M Ali, Susan M. Bellm, Erich Weigold, Allison L. Harris, Chuangang Ning, Don H. Madison Dec 2013

Experimental And Theoretical Cross Sections For Molecular-Frame Electron-Impact Excitation-Ionization Of D₂, Julian C A Lower, Esam S M Ali, Susan M. Bellm, Erich Weigold, Allison L. Harris, Chuangang Ning, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present both experimental and theoretical results for the dissociative ionization of D2 molecules induced by electron impact. Cross sections are determined in the molecular frame and are fully differential in the energies and emission angles of the dissociation fragments. Transitions are considered from the X1Σg+ electronic ground state of D2 to the 2sσg, 2pπu and 2pσu excited states of D2+. The experimental results are compared to calculations performed within the molecular four-body distorted-wave framework to describe the multicenter nature of the scattering process. The cross sections …

The Clustering Of Galaxies In The Sdss-Iii Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: Weighing The Neutrino Mass Using The Galaxy Power Spectrum Of The Cmass Sample, Gong-Bo Zhao, Shun Saito, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We measure the sum of the neutrino particle masses using the three-dimensional galaxy power spectrum of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 9 the constant MASS (CMASS) galaxy sample. Combined with the cosmic microwave background, supernova and additional baryonic acoustic oscillation data, we find upper 95 per cent confidence limits (CL) of the neutrino mass ∑mν < 0.340 eV within a flat Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) background, and ∑mν< 0.821 eV, assuming a more general background cosmological model. The number of neutrino species is measured to be Neff = 4.308 ± 0.794 and 4.032+0.870 -0.894 for these two cases, respectively. We study and quantify the effect of several factors on the neutrino measurements, including the galaxy power spectrum bias model, the …

The Impact Of An Interdisciplinary Learning Community Course On Pseudoscientific Reasoning In First-Year Science Students, Timothy Franz, Kris H. Green Dec 2013

The Impact Of An Interdisciplinary Learning Community Course On Pseudoscientific Reasoning In First-Year Science Students, Timothy Franz, Kris H. Green

Psychology Faculty/Staff Publications

This case study examined the development and evaluation of an interdisciplinary first-year learning community designed to stimulate scientific reasoning and critical thinking. Designed to serve the needs of scholarship students majoring in mathematics and natural sciences, the six-credit learning community course was writing-intensive and emphasized general scientific reasoning and critical thinking skills. Success of the course was measured using a pre-test/post-test design that assessed students’ paranormal beliefs. Outcomes of the study indicated students’ paranormal beliefs were significantly lower at the end of the semester than at the beginning, which was used as a surrogate measure of scientific reasoning that was …

Teacher Evaluations And Merit Pay: An Uneasy Mix, David Alan Dolph Dec 2013

Teacher Evaluations And Merit Pay: An Uneasy Mix, David Alan Dolph

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

Teacher evaluations are undergoing significant changes in response to demands for school reform and higher accountability. States are now including value-added data in teacher evaluations, experimenting with merit pay based on evaluations, or both. Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, and Texas are but a few states that have altered the way teachers are evaluated or that are incorporating value-added data.

Changes in evaluation practice will likely mean significant modifications in how building-level administrators evaluate teachers. Moreover, approaches to teacher salary systems are just as likely to be altered if merit pay is introduced. School business officials (SBOs) are typically …

With 'Cheekbones And Noses Like Eagles And Hawks': Indigeneity And Mestizaje In Ana Castillo’S 'The Mixquiahuala Letters' And Leslie Marmon Silko’S 'Almanac Of The Dead', Tereza M. Szeghi Dec 2013

With 'Cheekbones And Noses Like Eagles And Hawks': Indigeneity And Mestizaje In Ana Castillo’S 'The Mixquiahuala Letters' And Leslie Marmon Silko’S 'Almanac Of The Dead', Tereza M. Szeghi

English Faculty Publications

This article argues that conceptions of indigeneity and mestizaje conveyed in Ana Castillo's The Mixquiahuala Letters and Leslie Marmon Silko's Almanac of the Dead are influenced (differentially) by the very colonialist assumptions the novels otherwise aim to dismantle. I compare how indigeneity and mestizaje are defined in Letters andAlmanac (with particular attention to their oppositional features), addressing relationships between these definitions, popular colonialist discourse, and anti-colonial articulations of identity that have developed in American Indian and Chicana/o communities. Significantly (and tragically), Letters' Chicana protagonist, Teresa, envisions her recovery of a cohesive cultural identity as a return to a …

Examining The Ridership Attraction Potential Of Bus Rapid Transit: A Quantitative Analysis Of Image And Perception, Alasdair Cain, Jennifer Flynn Dec 2013

Examining The Ridership Attraction Potential Of Bus Rapid Transit: A Quantitative Analysis Of Image And Perception, Alasdair Cain, Jennifer Flynn

Journal of Public Transportation

If public transit is to attract discretionary riders, it must offer high-quality service and convey an attractive image. Although Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is designed to emulate rail-based transit, there is little quantitative evidence of whether BRT can capture the ridership attraction benefits associated with rail. A combination of focus groups and an attitudinal survey were conducted to assess BRT’s ability to replicate the high-quality image and ridership attraction benefits associated with rail, and to quantify the tangible and intangible factors that drive perceptual differences between alternative transit modes. Research was fielded in Los Angeles due to the city’s range …
