Can Experienced Observers Differentiate Between Lipoma And Well-Differentiated Liposarcoma Using Only Mri?, Patrick W. O'Donnell, Anthony M. Griffin, William C. Eward, Amir Sternheim, Lawrence M. White, Jay S. Wunder, Peter C. Ferguson
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
Well-differentiated liposarcoma represents a radiographic diagnostic dilemma. To determine the accuracy, interrater reliability, and relationship of stranding, nodularity, and size in the MRI differentiation of lipoma and well-differentiated liposarcoma, MRI scans of 60 patients with large (>5 cm), deep, pathologically proven lipomas or well-differentiated liposarcomas were examined by 10 observers with subspecialty training blinded to diagnosis. Observers indicated whether the amount of stranding, nodularity, and size of each tumor suggested a benign or malignant diagnosis and rendered a diagnosis of lipoma or well-differentiated liposarcoma. The accuracy, reliability, and relationship of stranding, nodularity, and size to diagnosis were calculated for …

Mets: Flexibility V. Interoperability, Katherine N. Ralson
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper examines whether projects making use of the METS metadata schema do so due to its flexibility or its interoperability. Projects listed in the METS Implementation Registry of the Library of Congress METS Official Web Site, as well as selected case studies are analyzed for the reason METS was used in their projects. Data gathered from these sources is consolidated and further analyzed using cluster analysis in order to answer the research questions: 1) Can it be said that METS is being selected for projects based primarily on one of two criteria: its flexibility or its interoperability?” And if …

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Purpose: Few studies have specifically targeted the experience of Spanish-speaking patients in the Emergency Department. Studies have shown that patient populations are growing more diverse. This presents challenges to the Emergency Department staff working in a fast-paced chaotic environment where vital information must be communicated accurately to best assess and treat patients presenting for care. Communicating with a patient who only speaks Spanish creates an obstacle for health care professionals trying to provide appropriate and timely care. The aim of this study was to obtain information to guide change in Emergency Department practice and promote more effective communication and respectful …

Linked Data And The Library Of Congress, Corinne M. Laurence
Linked Data And The Library Of Congress, Corinne M. Laurence
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The Resource Description Framework (RDF) is a machine-processable metadata standard created to link pieces of data from around the World Wide Web. It does this by creating meaningful statements about resources, which are identified by Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs). The Linked Data (LD) that emerges will be part of the Semantic Web, a new way of linking, searching, and finding information on the Web. Libraries around the world have begun to adopt RDF for their metadata in an attempt to make their metadata more discoverable on the World Wide Web, where the majority of their users are. The Library of …
Social Marketing Strategies For Stigmatized Target Populations: A Case Example For Problem Gamblers And Family Members Of Problem Gamblers, Kimberly A. Calderwood, William J. Wellington
Social Marketing Strategies For Stigmatized Target Populations: A Case Example For Problem Gamblers And Family Members Of Problem Gamblers, Kimberly A. Calderwood, William J. Wellington
The Qualitative Report
Advertising theory and accompanying research literature are in their infancy when it comes to advertising services to stigmatized populations. We know very little about what messages will impact potential clients of services and what messages could even be harmful to potential clients and to society’s shaping of social issues. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the views of problem gamblers and family members of problem gamblers in developing 10 foot by 20 foot billboards to promote a local problem gambling service. Participants identified issues such as photographs of money being a trigger to gamble, guilt and shame …
The Implication Of Patient-Based Interventions Leading To A More Effective Treatment Of Anticipatory Nausea & Vomiting In Cancer Patients, Katelyn Delaney
The Implication Of Patient-Based Interventions Leading To A More Effective Treatment Of Anticipatory Nausea & Vomiting In Cancer Patients, Katelyn Delaney
Honors Theses
In the last thirty years, greater attention has been drawn to the aggressive methods of cancer treatment and the aversive conditioned symptoms they come to elicit. Anticipatory nausea and vomiting is one such aversive conditioned side effect and is significantly prevalent in cancer patients who undergo treatments like chemotherapy. In response to the ineffectiveness of pharmacological interventions to control these symptoms, behavioral intervention methods have grown as a topic of research. The implications of these behavioral interventions (including cognitive/attentional distraction, meditation and systematic desensitization) have proven effective in the treatment of the anticipatory nausea and vomiting and reducing patient anxiety. …

An Integrated Approach To Diabetes Prevention: Anthropology, Public Health, And Community Engagement, Janet Page-Reeves, Shiraz I. Mishra, Joshua Niforatos, Lidia Regino, Andrew Gingerich, Robert Bulten
The Qualitative Report
Diabetes is an enormous public health problem with particular concern within Hispanic communities and among individuals with low wealth. However, attempts to expand the public health paradigm to include social determinants of health rarely include analysis of social and contextual factors considered outside the purview of health research. As a result, conceptualization of the dynamics of diabetes health disparities remains shallow. We argue that using a holistic anthropological lens has the potential to offer insights regarding the nature of the interface between broader social determinants, health outcomes and health disparity. In a primarily Hispanic, immigrant community in Albuquerque, New Mexico, …
Five Vignettes: Stories Of Teacher Advocacy And Parental Involvement, Adrienne C. Goss
Five Vignettes: Stories Of Teacher Advocacy And Parental Involvement, Adrienne C. Goss
The Qualitative Report
Qualitative research can, and sometimes should, utilize fictional representations, particularly when attempting to connect to and collaborate with communities outside of the academy. This work utilizes an arts - informed methodology of representation to communicate the importance and potential consequences of teacher advocacy and parental involvement. Specifically, I use fiction as a mode of representing the interview data that my research participant and I generated. After analyzing the data using grounded theory methods, I chose to represent the data with five vignettes. Vignette 1 introduces the reader to Ms. Abeni, a public school teacher who is passionate about educating every …
Vibrio Cholerae As A Predator: Lessons From Evolutionary Principles, Stefan Pukatzki, Daniele Provenzano
Vibrio Cholerae As A Predator: Lessons From Evolutionary Principles, Stefan Pukatzki, Daniele Provenzano
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Diarrheal diseases are the second-most common cause of death among children under the age of five worldwide. Cholera alone, caused by the marine bacterium Vibrio cholerae, is responsible for several million cases and over 120,000 deaths annually. When contaminated water is ingested, V. cholerae passes through the gastric acid barrier, penetrates the mucin layer of the small intestine, and adheres to the underlying epithelial lining. V. cholerae multiplies rapidly, secretes cholera toxin, and exits the human host in vast numbers during diarrheal purges. How V. cholerae rapidly reaches such high numbers during each purge is not clearly understood. We propose …
Gifted Students’ Perceptions Of The Influence Of A Gifted Middle School Program On The Development Of Their Achievement Orientation, Micah N. Bruce-Davis
Gifted Students’ Perceptions Of The Influence Of A Gifted Middle School Program On The Development Of Their Achievement Orientation, Micah N. Bruce-Davis
Doctoral Dissertations
In social cognitive theory, the development of self-perceptions is a complex process involving personality and environment. While educators may have little influence on students’ personality traits, they can attend to environmental components that support the development of positive self-perceptions. Developing positive self-perceptions has been identified as a key precursor to developing achievement behaviors. Achievement orientations are viewed as positive learning orientations with students focused on learning new material in comparison to a standard of excellence. Motivational variables such as achievement goals, self-efficacy beliefs, and intelligence beliefs have been connected to the development of an achievement orientation. These motivational variables have …
Topics In Distributed Inference, Sora Choi
Topics In Distributed Inference, Sora Choi
Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis covers three research topics in the broad field of distributed Inference. The first topic is tracking for passive radar in a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB)/Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) network. Passive radar is a bistatic or multistatic radar using illuminators of opportunity. Passive radar using a DAB/DVB network with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is the focus of this research. In this system, bistatic range and range-rate are available as measurements, while angular information is assumed unavailable due to the poor quality/lack of the information. Due to the use of the same carrier frequency, there is additional association ambiguity …

An Examination Of The Role Of Fundraising In Divisions Of Student Affairs At Seven Four-Year Public Universities In The Midwest, Danielle Nicole Miller-Schuster
Theses and Dissertations
With higher accountability standards, divisions of student affairs must find alternative ways to balance the rising costs of college with the survival and growth of the programs and services expected. This study examined one such alternative, fundraising in student affairs, to further develop the profession's understanding of engaging in or growing development efforts. As more divisions become involved, it becomes important to learn from colleagues in the profession who are engaging in development activities. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which divisions of student affairs were involved in fundraising activities at seven 4-year public universities …

Processing Of Underway Ctd Data, D. S. Ullman, David Hebert
Processing Of Underway Ctd Data, D. S. Ullman, David Hebert
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
A processing methodology for computation of accurate salinity from measurements with an underway CTD (UCTD) is presented. The UCTD is a rapidly profiling sensor package lacking a pump that relies on instrument motion to produce flow through the conductivity cell. With variable instrument descent rate, the flow through the cell is not constant, and this has important implications for the processing. As expected, the misalignment of the raw temperature and conductivity is found to be a function of the instrument descent rate. Application of a constant temporal advance of conductivity or temperature as is done with pumped CTDs is shown …

A Study Of Distributed Beamforming In Cognitive Radio Networks, Omi Sunuwar
A Study Of Distributed Beamforming In Cognitive Radio Networks, Omi Sunuwar
Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
With the rapid increase in new wireless technologies and services, the unlicensed frequency band have been substantially overcrowded while the licensed band are reportedly under-utilized. This spectrum scarcity has brought up the concept of cognitive radio networks. By applying distributed cooperation between users, cognitive radio can direct beam towards the intended receiver and suppress interference in unintended directions which can tackle the problem of spectrum scarcity.
In this MS thesis, first beamforming in uniform array is investigated. The effect of position displacement of antenna elements from ideal uniform array shows that there is an increase in sidelobe level. Least squares …
Tobramycin Disposition In The Lung Following Airway Administration, Min Li
Tobramycin Disposition In The Lung Following Airway Administration, Min Li
Theses and Dissertations
Tobramycin disposition following airway administration was evaluated by meta-analysis of human data in the literature and, experimentally, using a realistic ex vivo model, the isolated perfused rat lung preparation (IPRL). Pulmonary bioavailability of inhaled tobramycin in published studies was re-evaluated separately for CF and healthy adults, with the drug’s intrinsic pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters obtained from intravenous (IV) studies in the literature. While large variations in tobramycin’s clearance precluded accurate assessment of its bioavailability, the results were indicative of substantial pulmonary absorption, in spite of its hydrophilic and poly cationic properties. To explore its disposition kinetics and mechanisms following airway administration, …
Analysis Of Mathematical Models Of The Human Lung, Cooper Racheal
Analysis Of Mathematical Models Of The Human Lung, Cooper Racheal
Theses and Dissertations
The processes of lung ventilation and perfusion, diffusion, and gas transport make up the system of breathing and tissue oxygenation. Here, we present several mathematical formulations of the essential processes that contribute to breathing. These models aid in our understanding and analysis of this complex system and can be used to form treatments for patients on ventilators. With the right analysis and treatment options, patients can be helped and money can be saved. We conclude with the formulation of a mathematical model for the exchange of gasses in the body based on basic reaction kinetics.
Clostridium Difficile Infection Occurrence In Academic Health Centers: Do Organizational Factors Matter?, Amy Pakyz
Theses and Dissertations
Healthcare-associated infections occur commonly in hospitals and have a major impact on patient well-being. The occurrence of the healthcare-associated infection, Clostridium difficile, has been occurring more frequently among hospitalized patients due to an epidemic strain, and is an important cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and colitis. This study examined the impact of several organizational factors on the occurrence of C. difficile infection (CDI) in hospitals using an institutional theory perspective. Administrative claims were utilized from University HealthSystem Consortium hospitals to obtain hospital-level data for the calendar year 2011. Data were available for 89 hospitals. Hospital-level analyses, negative binomial regression models, were …
