Limit For Thermal Transport Reduction In Si Nanowires With Nanoengineered Corrugations, Sean E. Sullivan, Keng-Hua Lin, Stanislav Avdoshenko, Alejandro Strachan
Birck and NCN Publications
Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the thermal conductance of Si nanowires with periodic corrugations is lower than that of smooth wires with cross-sections equivalent to the constricted portions. This reduction in conductance is up to 30% and tends to plateau with increasing corrugation height. Spatially resolved temperature and heat current maps provide a microscopic understanding of this effect; we find that 80% of the heat current is carried through the constricted area even for high-amplitude corrugations. More importantly, we show that temperature gradient inversion and heat current vortices at the ridge peaks establish fundamental limits on maximum conductance reduction. …
Polarization Diversity In The Presence Of Multipath Propagation, Grant Taylor Wagner
Polarization Diversity In The Presence Of Multipath Propagation, Grant Taylor Wagner
Theses and Dissertations
The possibility of polarization diversity using left and right hand circular polarization (LHCP and RHCP) in the presence of multipath propagation is examined. We show that there are differences in the received signal for LHCP and RHCP for a number of realistic scenarios. Because multipath propagation can produce different LHCP and RCHP signals, there exists the possibility for diversity improvement involving the two polarizations.
Structural Analysis And Optimization Of Skyscrapers Connected With Skybridges And Atria, Amy Jean Taylor Mccall
Structural Analysis And Optimization Of Skyscrapers Connected With Skybridges And Atria, Amy Jean Taylor Mccall
Theses and Dissertations
Skybridges and atria between buildings are becoming more and more popular. Most current skybridge connections are either roller or rigid-connections. This dissertation presents an investigation of the structural analysis and optimization of skyscraper systems with hinge-connected skybridges, and compares the results to skyscraper systems with roller-connected skybridges and to skyscraper systems without skybridges altogether. Also presented is an investigation of the structural analysis and optimization of skyscrapers both with and without atria between the buildings. It was assumed that the atria envelope was constructed with cushions made from lightweight, transparent, and flexible Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE). A simplified skyscraper skybridge model …

Digital Outcrop Model And Paleoecology Of The Eight-Foot Rapid Algal Field (Middle Pennsylvanian Lower Ismay Sequence), Paradox Basin, Utah, Colton Lynn Goodrich
Theses and Dissertations
Although phylloid algal mounds have been studied for 50 year, much remains to be determined concerning the ecology and sedimentology of these Late Paleozoic carbonate buildups. Herein we perform a digital outcrop study of the well-known Middle Pennsylvanian Lower Ismay mound interval in the Paradox Basin because outcropping mounds along the San Juan River are cited as outcrop analogs of reservoir carbonates in the Paradox Basin oil province of Utah and adjacent states. The principal field area is the Eight Foot algal field located at river mile 19.2 on the San Juan River, approximately 14 miles SSW of Bluff, Utah. …

Rigidity And Flexibility Of Protein-Nucleic Acid Complexes, Emily Flynn, Filip Jagodzinski, Sharon Pamela Santana, Ileana Streinu
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
The study of protein-nucleic acid complexes is relevant for the understanding of many biological processes, including transcription, translation, replication, and recombination. The individual molecules in such complexes must be rigid enough to allow geometric matching of complementary shapes, yet sufficiently flexible to perform their functions. © 2013 IEEE.

A Dynamic Model Of Competitive Entry Response, Matthew Selove
A Dynamic Model Of Competitive Entry Response, Matthew Selove
Business Faculty Articles and Research
I develop a dynamic investment game with a “memoryless” research and development process in which an incumbent and an entrant can invest in a new technology, and the entrant can also invest in the old technology. I show that an increase in the probability of successfully implementing a technology can cause the incumbent to reduce its investment. Under certain conditions, if the success probability is high, the incumbent allows the entrant to win the new technology so that firms reach an equilibrium in which they use different technologies, and threats of retaliation prevent attacks; but if the success probability is …

Biological Activities Of Influenza Virus Subpopulations: Characterization Of Infectious, Interferon-Inducing And Interferon Induction-Suppressing Particles, Christopher P. Malinoski
Biological Activities Of Influenza Virus Subpopulations: Characterization Of Infectious, Interferon-Inducing And Interferon Induction-Suppressing Particles, Christopher P. Malinoski
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation explores the complex nature of the influenza virus quasispecies. Influenza populations exist as a mixture of mostly replication-deficient biologically-active particles. These particles are measured and quantified based upon the phenotype they manifest upon entry into the host. Three subpopulations are characterized: infectious, interferon-inducing, and interferon induction-suppressing particles.
It has been observed that only 5 out of every 100 particles of influenza are infectious. A novel biological assay was developed and, for the first time, directly demonstrated that infectious particles are the progenitors of all other virus particles. From the disparity observed to exist between the numbers of physical …

Improving The Implementation Of The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (Acnp) Role: Development Of Acnp Role Implementation Guidelines, Megan Elizabeth Liego
Improving The Implementation Of The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (Acnp) Role: Development Of Acnp Role Implementation Guidelines, Megan Elizabeth Liego
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
With the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and the Value Based Purchasing (VBP) initiative, hospitals and the health System have rolled out a strategic goals of focusing on meeting the VBP objectives and standardizing care within their hospitals. To help meet these goals and improve patient care, many hospitals have looked toward the implementation of the acute care nurse practitioner (ACNP) role in the hospital setting. There is a lack of guidelines, though, on how to implement the ACNP role. This has led to several barriers, which have created variation in practice and outcomes across …
Exploring The " Dark Matter" Of A Mammalian Proteome By Protein Structure And Function Modeling, Michal Brylinski
Exploring The " Dark Matter" Of A Mammalian Proteome By Protein Structure And Function Modeling, Michal Brylinski
Faculty Publications
Background: A growing body of evidence shows that gene products encoded by short open reading frames play key roles in numerous cellular processes. Yet, they are generally overlooked in genome assembly, escaping annotation because small protein-coding genes are difficult to predict computationally. Consequently, there are still a considerable number of small proteins whose functions are yet to be characterized. Results: To address this issue, we apply a collection of structural bioinformatics algorithms to infer molecular function of putative small proteins from the mouse proteome. Specifically, we construct 1,743 confident structure models of small proteins, which reveal a significant structural diversity with …

An Analysis Of Relationship Between School Composition, College Readiness Culture And Act Achievement In Tennessee High Schools, Sherenda Moss
An Analysis Of Relationship Between School Composition, College Readiness Culture And Act Achievement In Tennessee High Schools, Sherenda Moss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Although college aspirations have increased over the past several decades, significant gaps in race, ethnicity and income groups remain among high school students. Students of low-income and minority backgrounds are least likely to prepare for and enroll in college. A review of literature revealed that significant disparities found among students can be attributed to the lack of academic preparation, college knowledge, resources and shared advising in high schools (ACT, 2009; Conley, 2010, Spence, 2009). Often times, low-income and minority students are susceptible to a high school culture that conveys misperceptions about their readiness for college. The purpose of this study …

Research was conducted within the framerwork of the Leadership Identity Development (LID) model authored by Komives, Owen, Longerbem, Mainella, and Osteen (2005). Of particular interest was the degree to which the data upheld the presence of the four development influences of the LID model : 1) peer influences 2) meaningful involvement 3) reflective learning and 4) adult influence.Framed by an understanding of college student …
The Piano Music Of Jose Montserrat Maceda, Frances Alfaras Niduaza
The Piano Music Of Jose Montserrat Maceda, Frances Alfaras Niduaza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The obscurity of Maceda's piano works led to this study; ergo this will contribute to their understanding and significance. His "Two Pianos, Four Winds," composed in 1996 for clarinet, bassoon, horn, trombone, and two pianos, will be the focus of this study. His other piano works, "Music for Five Pianos," (1994), "Music for Two Pianos and Four Percussions," (2000), and "Sujeichon - A Korean Court Music for Four Pianos," (2002), will be briefly discussed. In order to fully comprehend the conceptual framework of his compositions, one has to be cognizant of his discourse, i.e., the influences of Western European avant-garde, …

At Home In The Outer Limits: Daimlerchrysler V. Bauman And The Bounds Of General Personal Jurisdiction, Todd W. Noelle
Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar
This commentary previews an upcoming Supreme Court case, DaimlerChrysler v. Bauman, in which the Court may decide whether maintaining a wholly-owned subsidiary in a forum state can render a foreign parent corporation "essentially at home" in that state, thereby permitting the forum state to exercise general personal jurisdiction over the parent corporation.
The Functionality Of The Tonb System Across The Transduction Pathway, Lindsey Marie Butterfield
The Functionality Of The Tonb System Across The Transduction Pathway, Lindsey Marie Butterfield
Honors Projects
The transport process at the outer membrane of gram negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, is influenced by the TonB protein. The TonB protein energizes transport trough specific outer membrane proteins that are involved in iron uptake. It does this by using the energy that is collected from the ion electrochemical gradient of the cytoplasmic membrane, by complexes of ExbB and ExbD proteins. The functions of this system involve a set of poorly understood interactions between TonB, ExbB, ExbD, and the outer membrane transporters. Modifying the amino terminus of ExbB produces a drastic effect that is seen during energy transduction for transport …

Self-Reported Juvenile Firesetting: Results From Two National Survey Datasets, Carrie Howell Bowling, Joav Merrick, Hatim A. Omar
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
The main purpose of this study was to address gaps in existing research by examining the relationship between academic performance and attention problems with juvenile firesetting. Two datasets from the Achenbach System for Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) were used. The Factor Analysis Dataset (N = 975) was utilized and results indicated that adolescents who report lower academic performance are more likely to set fires. Additionally, adolescents who report a poor attitude toward school are even more likely to set fires. Results also indicated that attention problems are predictive of self-reported firesetting. The National Survey Dataset (N = 1158) …
