An Evening With David Blight, S. Marianne Johnson

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Monday evening, November 18, students from Gettysburg College got to sit down and discuss memory with Dr. David Blight from Yale University, author of the renowned work Race and Reunion. The session was conducted as an informal panel with Dr. Blight and Gettysburg College’s own Dr. Isherwood and Dr. Jordan. Dr. Blight spoke about beginning his work when memory studies was not an official field and stumbling his way headlong into working with the memory of the American Civil War. When discussing whether or not memory studies were a fad that would pass away, Blight reassured the audience that people …

Reading Between The Lines, Conor P. Brooks

SURGE

“Why do so many people come to our country? They come here and they take pictures, and then they go home and use them to show that we are a terrible place. Why do you do this?”

This question was posed to me by a sixteen-year old boy in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti while I was visiting his school on a post-earthquake relief trip in 2012. [excerpt]

Genetic Sex Conditions And Redefining Sex, Jayce O'Shields Dec 2013

Genetic Sex Conditions And Redefining Sex, Jayce O'Shields

Student Scholarship

Western culture has a tendency to value binaries and discreet categories that separate its social structure and provide a sense of order and organization. The value placed on binaries and categories may be advantageous in some aspects, but when it starts to infringe upon the legal and medical rights of individuals not easily placed in either binary category, it can become less advantageous.

A baby is usually classified as either male or female shortly after birth, and all future legal, social, and economic actions and rights of that individual are more or less decided according to this classification. A problem …

Abstracted Primal-Dual Affine Programming, Tien Chih Dec 2013

Abstracted Primal-Dual Affine Programming, Tien Chih

Colloquia of the Department of Mathematical Sciences

The classical study of linear (affine) programs, pioneered by George Dantzig and Albert Tucker, studies both the theory, and methods of solutions for a linear (affine) primal-dual maximization-minimization program, which may be described as follows:

[Download attached PDF for complete abstract with description here.]

In this classical setting, there are several canonical results dealing with the primal-dual aspect of affine programming. These include: I: Tucker's Key Equation, II: Weak Duality Theorem, III: Convexity of Solutions, IV: Fundamental Theorem of Linear (Affine) Programming, V: Farkas' Lemma, VI: Complementary Slackness Theorem, VII: Strong Duality Theorem, VIII: Existence-Duality Theorem, IX: Simplex Algorithm.

Role Breadth And Ocb: An Investigation Of Antecedents And Consequences, Kimberly M. Perry Dec 2013

Role Breadth And Ocb: An Investigation Of Antecedents And Consequences, Kimberly M. Perry

Dissertations

Two studies were conducted to further investigate how organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) is conceptualized through the psychological mechanisms relating to OCB role definition, outcomes of OCB role definition, and the structure of OCB definition ratings. Previous research on OCB has suggested that organizational members have different perspectives, such that supervisors have a broader role definition than do their subordinates (Morrison, 1994). Study 1 tested a theoretical model using SEM that included the underlying psychological processes that relate to role breadth as well as individual-level and organizational-level outcome variables. The results supported a significant positive relationship between employee rated OCB definition …

Coping Styles Among Individuals With Severe Mental Illness And Comorbid Ptsd, Shannon Ashley Mcneill Dec 2013

Coping Styles Among Individuals With Severe Mental Illness And Comorbid Ptsd, Shannon Ashley Mcneill

Dissertations

There is little known about the mechanisms by which persons with SMI cope with their stress, and virtually no research is available on the influence of comorbid PTSD (SMI-PTSD) on coping within the SMI population. The current study examined coping strategies utilized by individuals with SMI versus those with SMI-PTSD, while also investigating the role of PTSD symptom severity, overall psychological distress, and substance use on coping strategy usage. Participants included adults (N = 90) recruited through a metropolitan community mental health center, all describing current symptoms of an SMI, 48 of whom met criteria for SMI-PTSD. Results of this …
