The Dissipation Of Urban High School Students' Post-Secondary Educational Aspirations And Career Planning During The College Choice Process, La Toro Yates Dec 2013

The Dissipation Of Urban High School Students' Post-Secondary Educational Aspirations And Career Planning During The College Choice Process, La Toro Yates

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Given the gap in the college choice literature about the decision-making process students use when making a decision on whether or not to attend college (McDonough & Calderone, 2010), the purpose of this study was to explore urban high school students’ perceptions of the structural factors that may influence their post-secondary educational aspirations and career plans. By working with students and guidance counselors at Sheridan High School, categorized as an urban high school but located in a rural area in the mid-Atlantic region of the country, the research team was able to gain information about how students navigate the college …

The Influence Of Montessori-Based Literacy Instruction And Methods On Reading Achievement Of Students In Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, And 7, Frances Bowman

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

This study examines the influence of Montessori-based literacy curriculum and instruction on student achievement in Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. I studied 71 matched pairs of urban charter school students (n=142) to determine if there was a statistically significant difference in reading achievement, as measured by the Maryland School Assessment (MSA), between students who were instructed by their teachers in Montessori literacy methods and curriculum and students from a nearby charter school who were instructed by their teachers using a basal reading method. T-tests were used to compare the mean scores of the combined grade levels …

Sensitivity Curves For Searches For Gravitational-Wave Backgrounds, E. H. Thrane, Joseph D. Romano Dec 2013

Sensitivity Curves For Searches For Gravitational-Wave Backgrounds, E. H. Thrane, Joseph D. Romano

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We propose a graphical representation of detector sensitivity curves for stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds that takes into account the increase in sensitivity that comes from integrating over frequency in addition to integrating over time. This method is valid for backgrounds that have a power-law spectrum in the analysis band. We call these graphs “power-law integrated curves.” For simplicity, we consider cross-correlation searches for unpolarized and isotropic stochastic backgrounds using two or more detectors. We apply our method to construct power-law integrated sensitivity curves for second-generation ground-based detectors such as Advanced LIGO, space-based detectors such as LISA and the Big Bang Observer, …

Evaluation Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor Receptor 1 Inhibition As A Treatment For Prostate Cancer: Preclinical Efficacy And Resistance, Cale Fahrenholtz Dec 2013

Evaluation Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor Receptor 1 Inhibition As A Treatment For Prostate Cancer: Preclinical Efficacy And Resistance, Cale Fahrenholtz

Open Access Dissertations

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-cutaneous malignancy in U.S. men. While tumors initially respond to androgen-deprivation therapy, the standard care for advanced or metastatic disease, tumors eventually recur as castration-resistant prostate cancer. Upregulation of the insulin-like growth factor signaling axis drives growth and progression of prostate cancer by promoting proliferation, survival, and angiogenesis. Ganitumab (formerly AMG 479) is a fully human antibody that inhibits binding of IGF-1 and IGF-2 to IGF-1R. Ganitumab decreased IGF-1 induced phosphorylation of the downstream effector AKT and reduced proliferation of multiple androgen-dependent and castration-resistant human prostate cancer cell lines in vitro albeit to …

The Impact Of Natural And Anthropogenic Climate Variability On Tropical Cyclone Tracks, Angela Joy Colbert Dec 2013

The Impact Of Natural And Anthropogenic Climate Variability On Tropical Cyclone Tracks, Angela Joy Colbert

Open Access Dissertations

To examine the impact of natural and anthropogenic climate variability on tropical cyclone (TC) tracks, a comprehensive analysis is conducted examining changes in TC tracks from changes in the large-scale steering flow and TC genesis for different climate scenarios. A Beta and Advection Model is used to create tracks under the different climate scenarios, which are then analyzed focusing on each contribution from changes in the large-scale steering flow and TC genesis separately and as a combined impact. Two experiments are conducted; the first examines potential changes in TC tracks due to anthropogenic climate change in the North Atlantic and …

Women With Guns: The Guerrilleras Of The Civil War Of The El Salvador 1979-1992, William Ryan Hamlet Dec 2013

Women With Guns: The Guerrilleras Of The Civil War Of The El Salvador 1979-1992, William Ryan Hamlet

Open Access Theses

Civil war raged in El Salvador from the 1970s through the 1980s as guerrilla armies, united under the Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), aimed to overturn what they considered to be an oligarchic repressive regime. Of these FMLN forces, approximately thirty percent were women. Using personal stories derived from a series of in-person interviews with former combatants, this thesis explores the why and how women joined and were included in the guerrilla forces as well as their roles and responsibilities as armed combatants. In addition, given the decade long duration of the conflict, I explore the evolution …

Escaping Entity-Centrism In Financial Services Regulation, Anita Krug Dec 2013

Escaping Entity-Centrism In Financial Services Regulation, Anita Krug

All Faculty Scholarship

In the ongoing discussions about financial services regulation, one critically important topic has not been recognized, let alone addressed. That topic is what this Article calls the “entity-centrism” of financial services regulation. Laws and rules are entity-centric when they assume that a financial services firm is a stand-alone entity, operating separately from and independently of any other entity. They are entitycentric, therefore, when the specific requirements and obligations they comprise are addressed only to an abstract and solitary “firm,” with little or no contemplation of affiliates, parent companies, subsidiaries, or multi-entity enterprises. Regulatory entity-centrism is not an isolated phenomenon, as …

Sport-Type Differences In Drinking Behaviors And Motives Among St. John Fisher College Student Athletes, Carly Szydlowski Dec 2013

Sport-Type Differences In Drinking Behaviors And Motives Among St. John Fisher College Student Athletes, Carly Szydlowski

Sport Management Undergraduate

In lieu of an abstract, here is the paper's first paragraph: It is known that alcohol abuse among college students has been, and remains, a very prevalent issue in our society today; however, some may not know the extent to which student athletes consume alcohol. Green, Uryasz, Petr and Bray (2008) conducted a study for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 2001 and found that approximately 80% of collegiate student athletes consumed alcohol on an annual basis, and that number has only risen. Not only are a large percentage of student athletes consuming alcohol, they are doing so much …

Head Coaching Gender Equality At The Division Iii Level, James Troutman Dec 2013

Head Coaching Gender Equality At The Division Iii Level, James Troutman

Sport Management Undergraduate

Throughout history gender discrimination has created barriers that have prevented women from achieving their desired career goals no matter what the work setting is. One way that steps were made towards the elimination of gender discrimination was the enactment of Title IX in 1972. Pervious research has examined barriers that women head coaches coaching men’s teams have had to overcome in order to acquire their position. The coaches who were used in that research either coached NCAA Division I men’s teams or all three divisions combined. The barriers these women experienced were both externally and internally barriers. The external barriers …
