The Power Of Lyrical Protest: Examining The Rhetorical Function Of Protest Songs In The 2000s, Mary Elizabeth Quirk Cort
The Power Of Lyrical Protest: Examining The Rhetorical Function Of Protest Songs In The 2000s, Mary Elizabeth Quirk Cort
Theses
Until the late 1960s, serious scholarship involving the impact of popular music as political expression was lacking. Studies in rhetorical criticism tended to focus upon speeches, essays, and historical documents. Yet in the 1970s, protest songs were given more attention by scholars. However, this trend was not continued into the 2000s. By analyzing the ideological themes within the lyrics, this thesis examined the rhetorical function of protest songs performed during the 2000s. Functions identified include: historicizing a truth, using music and lyrics as a buffer to challenge a power structure, empowering the listener to overcome adversity, communicating a message to …

Age-Related Modifications To The Magnitude And Periodicity Of Neuromuscular Noise, Niklas König Ignasiak
Age-Related Modifications To The Magnitude And Periodicity Of Neuromuscular Noise, Niklas König Ignasiak
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Background: Evaluation of task related outcomes within geriatric and fall-prone populations is essential not only for identification of neuromuscular deficits, but also for effective implementation of fall prevention strategies. As most tasks and activities of daily living are performed at submaximal force levels, restoration of muscle strength often does not produce the expected benefit in functional capacity. However, it is known that muscular control plays a key role in the performance of functional tasks, but it remains unclear to what degree muscular control and the associated neuromuscular noise (NmN) is age-related, particularly in the lower-extremities.
Objectives: The aim of this …

I spend a lot of time with my students working at soup kitchen and homeless shelters, and each winter, when it gets really cold and dark, my thoughts more often turn back to Dick. Dick died on Jan. 31, 1988. He was a veteran who served in Germany in the 1950s and was a graduate of St. John's University in New York, where his father has been an Engligh professor.
Dick had completed most of the work for his MBA during a career which included positions at Procter & Gamble, Federated Department Stores, and National Cash Register. At the time …
Real Time Monitoring Of Surface Chemical Events By Streaming Potentials In Microfluidic Channels, Kenji Nokura
Real Time Monitoring Of Surface Chemical Events By Streaming Potentials In Microfluidic Channels, Kenji Nokura
Theses and Dissertations
Zeta potential is one of the tools to measure the surface charge of materials, and Alvarez et al. have developed a microchannel device to measure zeta potentials in real time for label-free sensing using immobilized receptors on microchannel surfaces. However, the challenge has been the charge interference of surface modifiers on analyte detection. Therefore, it was necessary to find the best strategy to regenerate minimal surface charge after modifying the channel with polymer films that would anchor the affinity groups for the analyte. It was demonstrated that adsorption of positively and negatively charged analytes were monitored via real time zeta …

A Comparison Study Of Second-Order Screening Designs And Their Extension, Shane A. Dougherty
A Comparison Study Of Second-Order Screening Designs And Their Extension, Shane A. Dougherty
Theses and Dissertations
Recent literature has proposed employing a single experimental design capable of preforming both factor screening and response surface estimation when conducting sequential experiments is unrealistic due to time, budget, or other constraints. Military systems, particularly aerodynamic systems, are complex. It is not unusual for these systems to exhibit nonlinear response behavior. Developmental testing may be tasked to characterize the nonlinear behavior of such systems while being restricted in how much testing can be accomplished. Second-order screening designs provide a means in a single design experiment to effectively focus test resources onto those factors driving system performance. Sponsored by the Office …

Previous research has pointed to the importance of transformational leadership in facilitating employees' creative outcomes. However, the mechanism by which transformational leadership cultivates employees' creative problem-solving capacity is not well understood. Drawing on theories of leadership, information processing and creativity, we proposed and tested a model in which psychological safety and reflexivity mediate the effect of transformational leadership and creative problem-solving capacity. The results of survey data collected at three points in time indicate that transformational leadership facilitates the development of employees' creative problem-solving capacity by shaping a climate of psychological safety conducive to reflexivity processes. However, the findings also …

A Ten-Year Record Of Supraglacial Lake Evolution And Rapid Drainage In West Greenland Using An Automated Processing Algorithm For Multispectral Imagery, B. F. Morriss, R. L. Hawley, J. W. Chipman, L. C. Andrews
Dartmouth Scholarship
The rapid drainage of supraglacial lakes introduces large pulses of meltwater to the subglacial environment and creates moulins, surface-to-bed conduits for future melt. Introduction of water to the subglacial system has been shown to affect ice flow, and modeling suggests that variability in water supply and delivery to the subsurface play an important role in the development of the subglacial hydrologic system and its ability to enhance or mitigate ice flow. We developed a fully automated method for tracking meltwater and rapid drainages in large (> 0.125 km2) perennial lakes and applied it to a 10 yr time …

Actor-Network Theory, Tourism Organizations And The Development Of Sustainable Community Livelihoods, Mohamed Ahmed
Plymouth Business School Theses
Research on existing actor-networks has focused traditionally on outcomes, achievements and success at the expense of a detailed consideration of their formation and ability to function. In recognition of this lacuna, this study examined the formation and functioning of tourism-related actor-networks involved in environmental protection and the management of tourism in the coastal city of Hurghada, Egypt. More specifically, it applied the actor-network theory (ANT). In particular, the study applied its four moments of translation – problematization, interessement, enrolment and mobilization – and used Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to analyse the influencing factors, whether positively or negatively, and the degree …

Modeling Cool-Season Turfgrass Lawn Growth And Quality Responses To Soil Nitrogen And Carbon, And Tissue Nitrogen Concentrations, Xingyuan Geng
Modeling Cool-Season Turfgrass Lawn Growth And Quality Responses To Soil Nitrogen And Carbon, And Tissue Nitrogen Concentrations, Xingyuan Geng
Doctoral Dissertations
ABSTRACT
The goal of turfgrass nitrogen (N) fertilization is to supply sufficient N for aesthetically and functionally high-quality turfgrass without accumulation of excessive soil N, which can facilitate nitrate (NO3-) leaching losses. Currently, subjective measures (e.g., assumed N needs of turfgrass species; visual preference of turfgrass quality; historical N rates) remain the primary means used to guide N fertilization of turf. This makes it is more likely that excessive N will be applied to turfgrass. It would be desirable to make N fertilizer application recommendations for turfgrass based on objective testing methods that decrease the chances of …
Thermodynamics Of A Rotating Detonation Engine, Craig A. Nordeen
Thermodynamics Of A Rotating Detonation Engine, Craig A. Nordeen
Doctoral Dissertations
A practical thermodynamic cycle model of a rotating detonation engine (RDE) is developed for the purpose of predicting performance and understanding flow field behavior. The cycle model is based on a heuristic analysis of a RDE numerical simulation. The model is compared to the simulation and to laboratory experiment with good results.
The RDE constrains a detonation wave to rotate inside a cylindrical annulus, has no moving parts and requires a single ignition sequence. Thrust is produced continuously and at high frequency. The simplicity of the RDE offers the possibility of a practical detonation engine with efficiencies that exceed conventional …
Influence Of Morphology And Environment On The Electrochemical Reactivity Of Nio, Neil Spinner
Influence Of Morphology And Environment On The Electrochemical Reactivity Of Nio, Neil Spinner
Doctoral Dissertations
In this thesis, nickel oxide was investigated as an electrocatalyst and electrode material in both aqueous and non-aqueous media. The effects of morphology resulting from several different synthesis techniques were examined for the electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol in alkaline media and the Li+ mass transport in lithium-ion batteries. Effects of environment changes, including electrocatalyst/electrode additives and choice of media, were also investigated to determine their influence on the reactivity and mechanism for the oxidation of organics such as methane and methanol. For the conversion of methane at room temperature, an array of oxygenate products were identified and theoretical reaction …
Empirical Examination Of Caregiver Empowerment, Appraisal, And Depressive Symptoms Among Adult Siblings Of Individuals With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Mamta Saxena
Doctoral Dissertations
Today, 72% of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) in the United States live with a caregiver (Braddock & Rizzolo, 2013). In many families, siblings of individuals with IDDs are the default long-term care providers (Heller et al., 2008). Despite the fact that research has begun to recognize and explore the roles of family members in care, little is known about sibling support providers (SSPs). Exploration and confirmation of the caregiving processes and outcomes of siblings can have implications for policy, research, and practice. The purpose of this study was to examine a conceptual model of caregiving processes and …

PURPOSE: Sevoflurane increases reactive oxygen species (ROS), which mediate cardioprotection against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. Emerging evidence suggests that autophagy is involved in cardioprotection. We examined whether reactive oxygen species mediate sevoflurane preconditioning through autophagy.
METHODS: Isolated guinea pigs hearts were subjected to 30 min ischemia followed by 120 min reperfusion (control). Anesthetic preconditioning was elicited with 2 % sevoflurane for 10 min before ischemia (SEVO). The ROS-scavenger, N-(2-mercaptopropionyl) glycine (MPG, 1 mmol/l), was administered starting 30 min before ischemia to sevoflurane-treated (SEVO + MPG) or non-sevoflurane-treated (MPG) hearts. Infarct size was determined by triphenyltetrazolium chloride stain. Tissue samples were obtained …

In order to understand the microphysical properties of cirrus clouds, it is important to understand the formation and evolution of the environments where ice crystals form and reside on the microscale (~100 m). Uncertainties remain in simulating/parameterizing the evolution of ice crystals, which require more analyses in the Lagrangian view. However, most in situ observations are in the Eulerian view and are restricted from examining the lifecycle of cirrus clouds. In this work, a new method of Diao et al. GRL (2013)* is used to separate out five phases of ice crystal evolution, using the horizontal spatial relationships between ice …

The Mediating Role Of Classroom Social Environment Between Teacher Self-Efficacy And Student Adjustment, Keri Stewart
The Mediating Role Of Classroom Social Environment Between Teacher Self-Efficacy And Student Adjustment, Keri Stewart
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether students' perceptions of the classroom social environment mediate the relations between teacher self-efficacy and student adjustment.
Research suggests that early adolescents often experience decreases in engagement and motivation during the middle school years, which can put individuals at risk for academic failure and school dropout (Eccles, Lord, & Midgley, 1991). This occurs due to a mismatch between the individuals' developmental needs and the environment (Eccles et al., 1993). Whether early adolescents remain engaged in school is largely dependent on how they perceive the classroom environment promoted by their teacher (Erikson, 1950; …
