Molecular Basis Of Salmonella Enterica Serovar Kentucky Attachment To Broiler Skin, Sanaz Salehi Dec 2013

Molecular Basis Of Salmonella Enterica Serovar Kentucky Attachment To Broiler Skin, Sanaz Salehi

Theses and Dissertations

The presence of Salmonella enterica throughout the production and processing continuum is a concern in broiler industry. While federal regulations have lowered the acceptable level of Salmonella contamination on broiler carcasses, the mechanisms that contribute to pathogen attachment are not fully understood. Salmonella Kentucky has become the predominant Salmonella serovar isolated from broilers carcasses at the end of the immersion chill tank. In Europe and Africa this serovar has been shown to acquire antibiotic resistance genes that may lead this non-typhoidal serotype to become a potential public health concern. To investigate the genes that are involved in colonization of the …

The Importance Of Choice: Natural Birth And Midwifery In Northeast Mississippi, Colleen Elmer Dec 2013

The Importance Of Choice: Natural Birth And Midwifery In Northeast Mississippi, Colleen Elmer

Theses and Dissertations

For many American women, insurance restrictions and lack of access restrict women’s options when choosing birth experiences. This research uses a biocultural approach and cognitive anthropological methods to explore the ways and the degree to which alternative birthing practices, such as home-, clinic-, and hospital-based natural births, and midwifery services, physically and emotionally affect the women and infants who experience them. This research explores the reasons women pursue natural or alternative births. These topics are explored through interviews with women who have had natural births, who have used midwifery services, and who have had highly medicalized, OBGYN-attended births. Findings indicate …

The Mechanism By Which Oximes Reactivate Cholinesterases Inhibited By Organophosphates, Manikanthan Hari Naga Venkata Bhavaraju Dec 2013

The Mechanism By Which Oximes Reactivate Cholinesterases Inhibited By Organophosphates, Manikanthan Hari Naga Venkata Bhavaraju

Theses and Dissertations

The enzymes acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) are inhibited by nerve agents such as sarin and tabun. In general, the inhibited enzymes are reactivated by bisquaternary ammonium compounds (oximes). The binding free energies of the oximes; 2-PAM, MMB-4, HI-6, and obidoxime bound to human AChE (hAChE) and human BChE (hBChE) inhibited by sarin and tabun and also to the uninhibited enzymes were calculated using various computational methods. Using thermodynamic integration, the binding free energies of all the inhibited and uninhibited systems of MMB-4 and obidoxime were evaluated. The standard binding free energies (dA) were more negative than the experimental values …

Understanding Binding-Induced Conformational Change In The Pin1 Prolyl Isomerase, Hawa Gyamfi Dec 2013

Understanding Binding-Induced Conformational Change In The Pin1 Prolyl Isomerase, Hawa Gyamfi

Theses and Dissertations

Pin1 is a Prolyl Isomerase that catalyzes cis-trans isomerization of peptides with pSer/Thr-Pro motifs in many cell signaling proteins. This conformational switch is implicated in diseases. Pin1 activity is considered a target for therapeutic applications. Pin1 targets motifs by its N-terminal WW-binding domain. A C-terminal PPIase domain is responsible for catalysis. To understand how Pin1 coordinates its enzymatic activities, it is necessary to probe how the domains behave in the presence of substrates. Here, we used novel (Histone H1 and Sic1) and other existing peptides to characterize the dynamics of Pin1 and impact of substrate binding on inter-domain interactions. Pin1- …

Urban Flow-Through Facilities' Media Compositions For Stormwater Quality And Quantity Improvements, Emily Gwynne Overbey Dec 2013

Urban Flow-Through Facilities' Media Compositions For Stormwater Quality And Quantity Improvements, Emily Gwynne Overbey

Theses and Dissertations

Urban stormwater management is evolving toward sustainable approaches which rely on dispersed small-scale bioretention BMPs. One such BMP is the flow-through planter, commonly applied in areas where infiltration into in situ soil is restricted or not possible. A project was developed to evaluate 18, vertically scaled flow-through mesocosms. Three replicates of six treatments, including four soil mixtures containing varied percentages of sand, compost and topsoil, were tested for orthophosphate and nitrate removal, volume reduction capabilities, and peak flow attenuation through the application of a synthetic solution over a simulated 2-inch, Type II storm event. Runoff volume was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced compared to controls. Nutrient levels observed along the hydrograph at different time-steps and flow rates revealed patterns not apparent in cumulative results. The observation of preferential flow patterns along with variability in nutrient removal across treatments highlights the need for design modifications of flow-through facilities.

Urban Fringe And Transportation Corridor Convection-Diffusion Model For Anthropogenically-Initiated Wildfire Ignition Prediction, Ravi Raj Sadasivuni Dec 2013

Urban Fringe And Transportation Corridor Convection-Diffusion Model For Anthropogenically-Initiated Wildfire Ignition Prediction, Ravi Raj Sadasivuni

Theses and Dissertations

A novel approach for modeling anthropogenically-initiated wildfire ignition was developed that significantly advances the theoretical knowledge of human-wildfire interactions. Gravity interaction models that are commonly used for economic analyses associated with business competition were combined with fluid dynamics models that mimic human movement patterns to predict the probability of anthropogenically-initiated wildfire. Herein, a combined gravity interaction and fluid dynamics models is developed and validated for wildfire potential prediction against historic and current wildfire data. The study identified population centers and transportation corridors, in particular: proximity to railroads and roads; traffic volume; and density of the corridors as the most influential …

Waterbird And Seed Abundances In Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative And Non-Managed Wetlands In Mississippi And Louisiana, Matthew Moraco Weegman Dec 2013

Waterbird And Seed Abundances In Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative And Non-Managed Wetlands In Mississippi And Louisiana, Matthew Moraco Weegman

Theses and Dissertations

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) implemented the Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative (MBHI) in summer 2010 to provide wetlands for waterbirds inland from the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. To evaluate MBHI and associated wetland management practices, I estimated seed and waterbird densities in MBHI and non-managed wetlands in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) of Mississippi and Louisiana. Although not statistically different, wetlands enrolled in MBHI contained 1.26 and 1.53 times more seed biomass and seeds consumed by waterfowl than non-managed wetlands, respectively. I also detected 3 times more dabbling ducks and all ducks combined on MBHI wetlands. When I …

Formation Of Oxidative-Stress Resistant Phenotypes Of Listeria Monocytogenes Serotypes 1/2a And 4b And Their Stability At 37oc And 4oc, Piumi De Abrew Abeysundara Dec 2013

Formation Of Oxidative-Stress Resistant Phenotypes Of Listeria Monocytogenes Serotypes 1/2a And 4b And Their Stability At 37oc And 4oc, Piumi De Abrew Abeysundara

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to induce an oxidative-stress adaptation in Listeria monocytogenes Bug600 (serotype 1/2a) and F1057 (serotype 4b) by pre-exposing to sublethal H2O2 and alkali-stress either singly or sequentially. Our findings show that the sequential pre-exposure of cells to pH 9 for 30 min treatment followed by 50 ppm H2O2 for 30 min at 37°C yielded the highest oxidative-stress resistant phenotypes of L. monocytogenes Bug600 and F1057. The sublethal H2O2 and sublethal alkali-stress induced oxidative-stress adaptations were completely reversible within 60 min at 37°C in the absence of such sublethal stress. However, the oxidative-stress adaptation induced at …

Developing A Multistage Model For Treponemal Disease Susceptibility, Sarah A (Sarah Ann) Mathena Dec 2013

Developing A Multistage Model For Treponemal Disease Susceptibility, Sarah A (Sarah Ann) Mathena

Theses and Dissertations

Despite numerous studies, little is known about the influential factors impacting treponemal disease susceptibility. Yet, forms of treponemal disease, specifically yaws, are a major source of morbidity in the developing world. Bioarchaeological materials may assist with deficit by testing full ranges of disease expression. This study explores the relationship between treponemal disease ecology, specifically yaws, and susceptibility through six southeastern United States archaeological samples. Results show early life health experiences have a relationship to later life disease expression. However, influences of climate may only be seen at a cross-regional level. Finally, although nutrition, as evidenced by subsistence strategy, may play …

The Issue Of Mutuality In Canada-China Educational Collaboration, Phirom Leng, Julia Pan Dec 2013

The Issue Of Mutuality In Canada-China Educational Collaboration, Phirom Leng, Julia Pan

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

This paper examines the power relationships in two major Canada-China university linkage programs which ran between 1989 and 2001: the Canada-China University Linkage Program [CCULP] (1989-1995) and the Special University Linkage Consolidation Program [SULCP] (1996-2001). The study adopts the cosmopolitan concept of mutuality as a theoretical lens and employs the analytical method of constant comparison of qualitative data to explore the context surrounding the mutuality evidenced in CCULP/SULCP. The findings show that both programs manifested the four characteristics of mutuality identified by Johan Galtung: equity, autonomy, solidarity and participation. Human values or cultural agency were identified as the key factor …

Muslim Parents At Crossroads: Choosing The Right School For Their Children, Ghazala E. Ahmed

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

This paper is based on a qualitative study that investigated reasons behind twelve Muslim parents’ decisions to send their children to either an Islamic or a public school in South-Western Ontario. Three major thematic reasons for parents’ choices emerged from the interviews: first, were the parents’ experiences with either the public or Islamic school environment; second, were the parents’ experiences and perceptions of the school’s dress codes; and, third, was the parents’ understanding of the school curriculum content. In addition to these themes, the paper also discusses parents’ views on the language of the school and that of the home …

Home Is Always Calling: Determinants Of Civic Participation Among Zimbabwean Immigrants In Cape Town, South Africa, Rumbidzai R. Mufuka

Open Access Dissertations

This research project examines factors that have influenced community engagement among immigrants from Zimbabwe living in Cape Town, South Africa. A case study of PASSOP (an immigrant rights organization in Cape Town) tests existing theories on civic participation through interviews with immigrants, knowledgeable informants and activists. The study identifies reasons for leaving Zimbabwe and legal status in South Africa as factors that influence why undocumented immigrants participate in or withdraw from civil society in Cape Town. The results indicate that the conditions of the country of origin and the related reasons for leaving—political and economic degradation in Zimbabwe—heavily influence the …

Lightweight Moral Realism: Objectivity And Reasoning Without Heavyweight Facts, Mark Douglas Warren Dec 2013

Lightweight Moral Realism: Objectivity And Reasoning Without Heavyweight Facts, Mark Douglas Warren

Open Access Dissertations

In this dissertation, I develop a non-representational approach to metaethics that avoids the ontological and epistemic problems that traditional realist views face: accounting for the nature of moral facts and our knowledge of these facts in a way that comports with naturalism. According to expressivism—the most popular non-representational account in contemporary metaethics—moral claims don’t aim to represent moral facts or properties, but instead function to express our non-cognitive attitudes like approval or disapproval. This is a promising approach, but the view has substantial difficulties accounting for important features of moral discourse, like objectivity and complicated moral reasoning. I develop an …

A Study Of Internal Solitary Waves In Satellite Images Of The Mid-Atlantic Bight, Jingshuang Xue Dec 2013

A Study Of Internal Solitary Waves In Satellite Images Of The Mid-Atlantic Bight, Jingshuang Xue

Open Access Dissertations

Satellite imagery has been widely used to study internal solitary wave (ISW) generation mechanisms, evolution, and properties. The Nonlinear Internal Wave Initiative/Shallow Water 2006 (SW06) experiment in the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) provided a unique dataset to study the vertical structure from their surface manifestation in the images, which can improve our understanding of ISW evolution, energy dissipation, and mixing processes. This thesis has two parts. First, the applicability of various weakly nonlinear theories including the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), Intermediate Long Wave (ILW), Benjamin-Ono (BO), and higher-order KdV models is tested to describe large amplitude ISWs in the MAB. Based on …
