Evaluation Of Quantitative Polymerase Reaction And Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds To Determine Resistance To Aspergillus Flavus In Maize, Alicia Kay Wood-Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Screening for resistance to Aspergillus flavus and aflatoxin contamination in maize is an ongoing effort by universities, state and federal agencies. We evaluated two techniques to screen for resistance; quantitative polymerase reaction (QPCR) and solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Methods were adapted to accurately detect and quantify the fungus in culture and in the vegetative stage of plant tissues. These assays can eliminate microbiological techniques. The primary objectives of the study were to utilize 1) QPCR to detect and quantify fungal biomass in maize stem tissues to evaluate resistance in maize genotypes to A. flavus colonization in situ and in vivo and …
Evaluation Of Producing Sand-Based Sod On A Fine-Textured Native Soil Using Transported Sand, John David Vanderford
Evaluation Of Producing Sand-Based Sod On A Fine-Textured Native Soil Using Transported Sand, John David Vanderford
Theses and Dissertations
Turfgrass establishment on sand-based rootzones is routinely accomplished by using sod produced on a fine-textured native soil. As a result, soil layering occurs, potentially causing initial reduction in water infiltration, rooting, aeration, and overall turfgrass quality. This research was aimed at determining the feasibility of applying sand over existing native soil to produce hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) sand-based sod. Factors evaluated were visual quality and scalping. Treatments were harvested and transplanted to a sand-based research green where handle-ability, tensile strength, and infiltration were also evaluated. Results indicate aerify and topdress treatments showed higher quality …
Experimental Evaluation Of Error Bounds For The Stochastic Shortest Path Problem, Ibrahim Abdoulahi
Experimental Evaluation Of Error Bounds For The Stochastic Shortest Path Problem, Ibrahim Abdoulahi
Theses and Dissertations
A stochastic shortest path (SSP) problem is an undiscounted Markov decision process with an absorbing and zero-cost target state, where the objective is to reach the target state with minimum expected cost. This problem provides a foundation for algorithms for decision-theoretic planning and probabilistic model checking, among other applications. This thesis describes an implementation and evaluation of recently developed error bounds for SSP problems. The bounds can be used in a test for convergence of iterative dynamic programming algorithms for solving SSP problems, as well as in action elimination procedures that can accelerate convergence by excluding provably suboptimal actions that …
Factors Influencing Gypsum Crystal Morphology Within A Flue Gas Desulfurization Vessel, Kinsey M (Kinsey Morgan) Lewis
Factors Influencing Gypsum Crystal Morphology Within A Flue Gas Desulfurization Vessel, Kinsey M (Kinsey Morgan) Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) is utilized by the coal-powered generating industry to safely eliminate sulfur dioxide. A FGD vessel (scrubber) synthetically creates gypsum crystals by combining limestone (CaCO3), SO2 flue gas, water and oxygen resulting in crystalline gypsum (CaSO4 ∙ 2H2O), which can be sold for an economic return. Flat disk-like crystals, opposed to rod-like crystals, are hard to dewater, lowering economic return. The objectives were to investigate the cause of varying morphologies, understand the environment of precipitation, as well as identify correlations between operating conditions and resulting unfavorable gypsum crystal growth. Results show evidence supporting airborne impurities due to …
Investigation Of Parent Source Material In Smith County, Mississippi, Kayla Jean Calhoun
Investigation Of Parent Source Material In Smith County, Mississippi, Kayla Jean Calhoun
Theses and Dissertations
Calcium bentonite deposits of the Glendon and Bucatunna formations of the Oligocene Vicksburg Group located in Smith County, Mississippi were examined to determine the depositional environment, diagenetic history and origin of the bentonite. Traditionally, calcium bentonite was considered to be the product of the weathering of volcanic ash deposits. The hypothesis tested is that the bentonite deposits are not a result of weathered volcanic ash, but are a result of weathered marl. Core samples were drilled from the Chisholm bentonite mine in Smith County and were studied using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and petrographic microscopy. Abundant bacteria along with …
Investigation Of The Structure-Activity Relationship Of Pseudo-Single-Crystal Platinum Electrodes By Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, Yulin Wang
Theses and Dissertations
The study of the structure-activity relationship of electrode surfaces is fundamentally important in electrocatalysis research. Yet, the methods and techniques used for the examination of structure-activity relationship so far are limited by their capabilities, and the exploration of electrochemistry at complex surfaces is very challenging. In this study, the correlation between the electrode surface structure and its corresponding activity in two electrochemical reactions were investigated: an electrochemical etching reaction and an electrocatalysis reaction. A polycrystalline Pt electrode was galvanically etched to expose the underlying well-defined crystallites serving as pseudo-single-crystal electrodes. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) complemented with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) …

Black-White, Black-Nonblack, And White-Nonwhite Residential Segregation In U.S. Metropolitan And Nonmetropolitan Areas, 1990-2010, Jed Raney Pressgrove
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study is to examine racial residential segregation in U.S. metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. The study uses 1990-2010 decennial census data to answer a broad theoretical question: is the historical black-white color line being replaced by a black-nonblack or white-nonwhite color line? The results show that blackwhite segregation is higher than black-nonblack and white-nonwhite segregation in metropolitan areas, nonmetropolitan areas, and the United States as a whole. A multivariate analysis reveals that population size tends to be associated with higher segregation in metropolitan areas and lower segregation in nonmetropolitan areas. As a control variable, diversity seems to …

Characterization Of A Novel Ring-Type Ubiquitin E3 Ligase Ghring2 Involved In Cotton Fiber Development, Shiva Theja Reddy Soma
Theses and Dissertations
The ubiquitin-proteasome proteolysis pathway is responsible for the degradation of abnormal and short-lived proteins to regulate many important biochemical activities in eukaryotes. By employing affymetrix microarray analysis, we have identified a novel ubiquitin ligase E3 gene GhRING2 that is expressed differentially between two G. hirsutum lines - Texas Marker-1 and Chromosome Substitution Line CS-B25. The complete GhRING2 gene sequence was obtained by genomic and cDNA walking. The expression of GhRING2 in cotton fiber is developmentally regulated, suggesting that the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway may regulate cotton fiber growth and development. Using a yeast two-hybrid assay GhRING2 was found to interact with a …

Rice not collected by harvesters and natural seeds are important foods for waterfowl. Estimation of abundance of these seeds is necessary for calculating waterfowl habitat conservation needs in the Louisiana Chenier Plain (LCP) and Texas Mid-Coast (TMC). My objectives were to quantify dry mass of rice and other seeds from August-November 2010, and estimate waterbird abundances on farmed and idle ricelands in these regions from December 2010-March 2011. Rice abundance in farmed ricelands ranged from 159.7 kg/ha (CV = 66.6%) to 1,014.0 kg/ha (CV = 8.3%). Natural seed abundance in idle ricelands ranged from 99.7 kg/ha (CV = 32.9%) to …
Population-Level Genetic Structure Of Acmispon Argophyllus On The Channel Islands Of California, Gregory Lawrence Wheeler
Population-Level Genetic Structure Of Acmispon Argophyllus On The Channel Islands Of California, Gregory Lawrence Wheeler
Theses and Dissertations
The California Channel Islands present an ideal system in which to study unique biogeographical patterns seen in island systems near a mainland source, where spatial barriers are likely to limit gene flow without disrupting it completely. The islands also harbor a number of endemic taxa, suggesting that isolation from the mainland may be strong for some taxa. For this study, Acmispon argophyllus, a legume species found across five of the eight islands as well as on the mainland was used to test hypotheses at three spatial scales. Northern island populations have diverged into what potentially represents a new species; populations …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Catalytic Activity Of Silica Supported Bimetallic Copper Catalysts For Organic Oxidation Reactions And The Study Of Benzylation Of Triketones, Nuwan Dileepa De Silva
Theses and Dissertations
The dissertation describes research work on development of bimetallic heterogeneous catalysts for oxidation of organic compounds. Binuclear metal complexes are an interesting class of compounds due to their catalytic activity. The approach involves anchoring a triketone ligand to Cab-O-Sil via a linker. Specifically, silica gel was allowed to react with p-chloromethylphenyltrimethoxysilane followed by coupling with deprotonated triketone compounds. The viability of this approach was verified by performing the benzylation reaction of triketones with benzyl halides under basic conditions. The benzylation of 2,4,6-heptanetrione and 1,5-diphenyl-1,3,5-pentanetrione is achieved with benzyl bromide using n-tetrabutylammonium fluoride as base. These benzylation reaction conditions were used …

Quality Of Corn Silage Inoculated With L. Buchneri And P. Pentosaceus, Kellie Nichole Kaletsch
Theses and Dissertations
Microbial inoculants are forage additive products that contain viable bacteria and sometimes a combination of enzymes. Bacterial inoculants are used primarily for two reasons; first to gain rapid fermentation and second to decrease or inhibit spoilage. Inoculants work by shifting the fermentation of forage crops. The shift of fermentation causes preservation of nutrients, dry matter (DM) and occasionally increases animal performance. Most inoculants contain lactic acid producing bacteria to aid in shifting fermentation to lactic acid and away from acetic acid and ethanol production; however some inoculants aid in aerobic stability enhancement by production of acetic acid.. Although most inoculants …
