Soil Surface Organic Layers In The Arctic Foothills: Development, Distribution And Microclimatic Feedbacks, Carson A. Baughman Dec 2013

Soil Surface Organic Layers In The Arctic Foothills: Development, Distribution And Microclimatic Feedbacks, Carson A. Baughman

Forest Sciences

Accumulated organic matter at the ground surface plays an important role in Arctic ecosystems. These soil surface organic layers (SSOLs) influence temperature, moisture, and chemistry in the underlying mineral soil and, on a global basis, comprise enormous stores of labile carbon. Understanding the dynamics of SSOLs is a prerequisite for modeling the responses of arctic ecosystems to climate changes. Here we ask three questions regarding SSOLs in the Arctic Foothills of northern Alaska: 1) What environmental factors control their spatial distribution? 2) How long do they take to form? 3) What is the relationship between SSOL thickness and mineral soil …

Surface Water Dynamics Of Shallow Lakes Following Wildfire In Boreal Alaska, Garrett L. Altmann Dec 2013

Surface Water Dynamics Of Shallow Lakes Following Wildfire In Boreal Alaska, Garrett L. Altmann

Forest Sciences

Wildfire is ubiquitous to interior Alaska and is the primary large-scale disturbance regime affecting thawing permafrost and ecosystem processes in boreal forests. Since surface and near surface hydrology is strongly affected by permafrost occurrence, and wildfire can consume insulating organic layers that partially control the thickness of the active layer overlying permafrost, changes in the active layer thickness following fire may mark a distinct change in surface hydrology. In this study, we examined surface area dynamics of lakes following wildfire in four regions of Interior Alaska during a 25-year period from 1984 - 2009. We compared the surface water dynamics …

Decline Curve Analysis And Enhanced Shale Oil Recovery Based On Eagle Ford Shale Data, Dieudonne K. Delaihdem Dec 2013

Decline Curve Analysis And Enhanced Shale Oil Recovery Based On Eagle Ford Shale Data, Dieudonne K. Delaihdem

Engineering

Transient and fracture dominated flow regimes in tight permeability shale reservoirs with hydraulically fractured horizontal wells impose many unconventional challenges. These include execution of appropriate shale decline curve analysis and the optimization of hydrocarbons recovery. Additionally, short production profiles available are inadequate for accurate production decline analysis. This research assessed the effectiveness of Arps' decline curve analysis and recently established methods--power law exponential analysis, logistic growth analysis, Duong's method and the author's approach--to predict future production of horizontal wells in the Eagle Ford Shale. Simulation models investigated history matching, enhanced shale oil recovery, and drainage area beyond stimulated reservoir volume. …

Response Of Pile-Guided Floats Subjected To Dynamic Loading, Zhili Quan, N/A 权致力 Dec 2013

Response Of Pile-Guided Floats Subjected To Dynamic Loading, Zhili Quan, N/A 权致力

Engineering

Pile-guided floats can be a desirable alternative to stationary berthing structures. Both floats and guide piles are subjected to time varying (dynamic) forces such as wind-generated waves and impacts from vessels. There is little design information available concerning the dynamic load environment to which the floats will be subjected. So far, the most widely acceptable method used in offshore structure design is the Kinetic Energy Method (KEM). It is a simplified method that is based on the conservation of energy. This approach is straightforward and easy to implement. However, in spite of its simplicity and straightforwardness, the method lacks accuracy. …

Performance Analysis Of Three Nanofluids In Liquid To Gas And Liquid To Liquid Heat Exchangers, Dustin R. Ray

Engineering

One purpose of this research was to analyze the thermal and fluid dynamic performance of nanofluids in an automotive radiator (liquid to gas). Detailed computations were performed on an automotive radiator using three different nanofluids containing aluminum oxide, copper oxide and silicon dioxide nanoparticles dispersed in the base fluid, 60:40 ethylene glycol and water (EG/W) by mass. The computational scheme adopted was the effectiveness-Number of Transfer Unit ( -- NTU) method encoded in Matlab. The computational scheme was validated by comparing the predicted results with that of the base fluid reported by other researchers. Then, the scheme was adapted to …

The Influence Of Climate And Tectonics On Topography In The Hayes Range And Its Foothills, Gabrielle Vance Dec 2013

The Influence Of Climate And Tectonics On Topography In The Hayes Range And Its Foothills, Gabrielle Vance

Geosciences

Complex feedback exists among climate, tectonics, and glacial erosion in the creation of topography: climate influences glaciation; tectonics and glacial erosion modify topography; topography influences climate. The objectives of this study are to determine elevation distribution in the Hayes Range area of the central Alaska Range and to identify evidence for structural or erosional controls. I have used geospatial information systems (GIS) software to map mean elevation, calculate geomorphic indices from a digital elevation model (DEM), and characterize climatic, tectonic, and topographic patterns. Deformation, elevation, and erosion all increase southward within the range. In the northern part of the range, …

A Conceptual Model Of The Pilgrim Hot Springs Geothermal System, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, Joshua Miller Dec 2013

A Conceptual Model Of The Pilgrim Hot Springs Geothermal System, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, Joshua Miller

Geosciences

This work has developed a conceptual geological model for the Pilgrim Hot Springs geothermal system supporting the exploration, assessment and potential development of this resource for direct use and electric power production. The development of this model involved the analysis of a variety of subsurface and geophysical data and the construction of a 3D lithostratigraphic block model. Interpretation of the data and block model aimed to establish the most likely scenario for subsurface geothermal fluid flow. As part of this work well cuttings were analyzed for permeability and correlated with geophysical logs from well to well to constrain the stratigraphic …

New Algorithms For The Compilation Of Glacier Inventories, Christian Kienholz Dec 2013

New Algorithms For The Compilation Of Glacier Inventories, Christian Kienholz

Geosciences

Glacier inventories are used for many applications in glaciology, however, their manual compilation is time-consuming. Here, we present two new algorithms for the automatic compilation of glacier inventories. The first approach is based on hydrological modeling tools and separates glacier complexes into individual glaciers, requiring a digital elevation model (DEM) and glacier complex outlines as input. Its application to > 60,000 km² of ice in Alaska (~98% success rate) and southern Arctic Canada (~97% success rate) indicates the method is robust if DEMs and glacier complex outlines of good quality are available. The second algorithm relies on glacier outlines and a …

Temperature Index Modeling Of The Kahiltna Glacier: Comparison To Multiple Field And Geodetic Mass Balance Datasets, Joanna Young Dec 2013

Temperature Index Modeling Of The Kahiltna Glacier: Comparison To Multiple Field And Geodetic Mass Balance Datasets, Joanna Young

Geosciences

Glaciers of Alaska, USA, and Northwestern Canada are shedding mass at one of the highest rates of any mountain glacier system, with significant impact at the global and local scales. Despite advances in satellite and airborne technologies, fully characterizing the temporal evolution of glacier mass change in individual watersheds remains a challenge. Temperature index modeling is an approach that can be used to expand on sparse ground observations, and that can help bridge the gap between regional and individual watershed estimates of the time series of glacier mass change. Here we present a study on temperature index modeling of glacier-wide …

Landfast Sea Ice Formation And Deformation Near Barrow, Alaska: Variability And Implications For Ice Stability, Joshua M. Jones Dec 2013

Landfast Sea Ice Formation And Deformation Near Barrow, Alaska: Variability And Implications For Ice Stability, Joshua M. Jones

Geosciences

Climate change in the Arctic is having large and far-reaching effects. Sea ice is declining in annual extent and thinning with a warming of the atmosphere and the ocean. As a result, sea ice dynamic behaviour and processes are undergoing major changes, interacting with socio-economic changes underway in the Arctic. Near Barrow, Alaska, landfast sea ice is an integral part of native lñupiaq culture and impacts the natural resource extraction and maritime industries. Events known as breakouts of the landfast ice, in which stable landfast ice becomes mobile and detaches from the coast, have been occurring more frequently in recent …

Petrological Constraints On The Origin Of Enclaves From Kasatochi Volcano, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, Adrienne Kentner Dec 2013

Petrological Constraints On The Origin Of Enclaves From Kasatochi Volcano, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, Adrienne Kentner

Geosciences

Products of the 2008 eruption of Kasatochi volcano in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, include mafic and ultramafic crystalline intrusive rocks. I analyzed 42 such samples that were collected from Kasatochi in 2012. The mafic enclaves are hornblende gabbros that are texturally and compositionally layered and are composed of plagioclase (An⁉܉), pargasitic hornblende, clinopyroxene, and accessory magnetite. The ultramafic samples include variable amounts of clinopyroxene and olivine with interstitial pargasitic hornblende and accessory spinel. Modal mineral abundances in the ultramafic enclaves were used to classify the samples as wehrlite, olivine-clinopyroxenite, and clinopyroxenite. Compositions of interstitial hornblende in the pyroxenite samples are …

Online Social Media As A Social-Ecological Systems Research Tool: Facebook And Two Rural Alaskan Communities, Richard E. Hum Dec 2013

Online Social Media As A Social-Ecological Systems Research Tool: Facebook And Two Rural Alaskan Communities, Richard E. Hum

Rural Development

The earth has transitioned into the anthropocene, which is defined by complex environmental change linked to human behavior and requires new tools of analysis in order to understand shifting social-ecological system (SES) dynamics. In this work, I explore taking advantage of widespread online social media participation to develop the tools for doing so. Spatially grounded public exchanges on Facebook are examined with three goals in mind: 1) examine the types of SES content being passed through this communication medium, 2) compare community observations to relevant scientific observations, and 3) define a flexible and reproducible research method for integrating these communications …

Foster Parent Training For The Delivery Of Independent Living Skills, Kandy Alley Dec 2013

Foster Parent Training For The Delivery Of Independent Living Skills, Kandy Alley

Counseling

Although training is made available to foster parents when they volunteer to share their homes with children in need, the required ten hours for single parents and fifteen hours for coupled parents does not provide enough training for foster parents who are working with youth preparing for independent living to give them the skills they need to succeed. There are many programs designed for youth, but fewer programs are readily available in Fairbanks, Alaska to teach foster parents how to deliver the skills to the youth. Youth leaving foster care continue to have lower outcomes in education, employment, housing, and …

Academic, Behavioral And Social Intervention Strategies For Elementary Children With Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Kristin Flora Dec 2013

Academic, Behavioral And Social Intervention Strategies For Elementary Children With Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Kristin Flora

Counseling

Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience academic, behavioral and social challenges that can interfere with their ability to participate fully in the school environment. School districts are legally mandated to provide services to students with disabilities. This paper provides definitions of ASD, addresses some of the diagnostic testing instruments, describes theoretical approaches, and looks at three evidence-based intervention strategies that could be utilized by a school counselor and staff members to work effectively with students with autism. The first is applied behavioral analysis (ABA) which centers on teaching small, measurable units of behavior systematically. The second intervention is assistive …

Synthesis Of Sphingosine Analogues By Diastereospecific Amination Of Enantiopure Trans-Gamma, Delta-Unsaturated-Beta-Hydroxyesters, Zhipeng Dai, N/A 戴志鹏 Dec 2013

Synthesis Of Sphingosine Analogues By Diastereospecific Amination Of Enantiopure Trans-Gamma, Delta-Unsaturated-Beta-Hydroxyesters, Zhipeng Dai, N/A 戴志鹏

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Sphingolipids play critical roles in signal transduction, intercellular membrane trafficking and cell growth. As bioactive sphingolipids, ceramide and sphingosine have been implicated in activating anti-proliferative and apoptotic responses in various cancer cells. Conversely, metabolic conversion of ceramide into sphingosine 1-phosphate, ceramide 1-phosphate and glucosylceramide regulates cell proliferation and suppresses ceramide programmed cell death. Many anticancer drugs and stress-induced agonists have been developed to increase endogenous ceramide levels. Sphingosine/ceramide analogues reportedly enhance antitumor activity and have been proposed as a potential new class of chemotherapeutic agents. Among these, sphingosines with aromatic substituents in the side chain often exhibit stronger biological activity …

Toxicodistribution Of Mercury And Selenium In Pinnipeds Of Alaska, Lucero Correa Dec 2013

Toxicodistribution Of Mercury And Selenium In Pinnipeds Of Alaska, Lucero Correa

Chemistry and Biochemistry

This study is divided into two major parts (chapters) in order to better understand mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) tissue distribution in pinnipeds. The first part of the study focuses on determining total mercury ([THg]) and selenium ([TSe]) concentrations (mass and molar based) among cardiac and renal tissues of ice seals (focus on bearded seals, Erignathus barbatus) as compared to the more traditionally analyzed tissues (e.g. liver, skeletal muscle). Determining Hg distribution within these tissues is essential in establishing sampling methods for biomonitoring, histopathology and biochemistry of Hg. Age was determined to be an important driver of [THg] and Se:Hg …

Glucose Transporter-4 In Mononuclear Cells Of Sled Dogs, Theresia Maria Schnurr Dec 2013

Glucose Transporter-4 In Mononuclear Cells Of Sled Dogs, Theresia Maria Schnurr

Chemistry and Biochemistry

The glucose transporter-4 (GLUT4) is the glucose transporter most responsive to insulin and has been thought to exist predominately in muscle and adipose cells. There have been findings that the glucose transporter-4 isoform is also expressed in subpopulations of white blood cells such as mononuclear cells. This study was designed to validate the presence of GLUT4 in subpopulations of white blood cells of sled dogs and to investigate whether changes in GLUT4 protein levels in white blood cells might be associated with age and stage of conditioning, as it has been reported in muscle. Our initial results have shown the …

Evolution In A Tropical Archipelago: Comparisons Within And Among 50 Species Of Philippine Birds, Kyle Campbell Dec 2013

Evolution In A Tropical Archipelago: Comparisons Within And Among 50 Species Of Philippine Birds, Kyle Campbell

Biological Sciences

Tropical islands are hotspots for speciation and the generation of genetic diversity within species. The islands of the Philippines have experienced dynamic biogeographic histories, making them excellent for studying the processes affecting the generation and distribution of genetic diversity. I tested hypotheses about the distribution of population genetic diversity within species and examined levels of genetic and phenotypic divergence within 50 species of Philippine birds. The first study empirically tested two models for the distribution of population genetic diversity (increasing diversity with decreasing latitude and decreasing diversity approaching range edges) and found no support for either model. This was not …

Peeking Through A Frosty Window: Molecular Insights Into The Communities Of Arctic Soil Fungi, Ina Timling Dec 2013

Peeking Through A Frosty Window: Molecular Insights Into The Communities Of Arctic Soil Fungi, Ina Timling

Biological Sciences

Fungi are thought to be one of the most diverse groups of organisms in the Arctic. They drive mineral and energy cycles and influence the occurrence of other organisms as mutualists (mycorrhizae, endophytes, lichens), decomposers and pathogens. Nevertheless, information on fungal biodiversity and distribution patterns in relation to environments across the Arctic is still sparse. Molecular methods were used to examine the diversity and community structures of ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) associated with two principal arctic host plants, Salix aretica and Dryas integrifolia, as well as total soil fungal communities of adjacent disturbed and undisturbed areas of patterned-ground features across the …

Investigating The Effects Of Land Use On Small Mammal Populations, Emily Vincent Dec 2013

Investigating The Effects Of Land Use On Small Mammal Populations, Emily Vincent

Student Research

Introduction
The DePauw Nature Park is an excellent site to study the effects of land use on ecosystems. The recent construction of a small farm and the recent restoration of farmland into a prairie provide sites to study how changes in land use affect ecosystems. We studied the effects of land use changes on small mammal communities at the campus farm, an old field next to the campus farm, and a restored prairie.

Hypotheses
We hypothesized that the abundance and diversity of small mammals would be highest in the restored prairie and lowest in the campus farm.

Methods
We used …
