Protracted Social Conflict: A Reconceptualization And Case Analysis, Melissa M. C. Beaudoin
Protracted Social Conflict: A Reconceptualization And Case Analysis, Melissa M. C. Beaudoin
Theses and Dissertations
What are the necessary components of protracted social conflict (PSC)? The works of Edward Azar have laid the foundation as to how PSC is approached in modern scholarship by identifying four necessary components: effective participation, security, distinctive identity, and social recognition of identity. However, do these components account for all of the descriptive and sustaining aspects of PSC? How are these components measured? Furthermore, testing and verification of these components has been limited. Of specific interest to this dissertation, then, is how the theory of PSC is organized and what its theoretically necessary components truly are. This dissertation reconceputalizes and …

"Without A Few Negroes": George Whitefield, James Habersham, And Bethesda Orphan House In The Story Of Legalizing Slavery In Colonial Georgia, Tara Leigh Babb
Theses and Dissertations
A 1735 law banned slavery in the new English colony of Georgia. The colony's Trustees considered slavery to be incompatible with their aims of using the colony to provide a subsistence living for England's poor and to provide a buffer between South Carolina and Spanish Florida. In the ensuing years, various parties linked the colony's failure to thrive (and their own failure to succeed within Georgia) to the lack of an enslaved labor force. By 1750, the Board of Trustees relented to pressure and enacted what they considered to be a humane slave code. Evangelist George Whitefield and teacher and …
For Their Mutual Benefit: Public Support And Private Development Of Historic Buildings In Columbia, South Carolina, Angi Fuller Wildt
For Their Mutual Benefit: Public Support And Private Development Of Historic Buildings In Columbia, South Carolina, Angi Fuller Wildt
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on successful rehabilitations of historic buildings in Columbia, South Carolina. All were undertaken between 1976 and 2013 by private developers in conjunction with public support. The cases presented are located in four downtown districts known as the Vista, the Main Street Corridor, the Granby and Olympia Mill Villages, and Innovista. The rehabilitations differed due to variables unique to their locations in each of these areas as well as conditions in the years that they took place. Public support included financial incentives and guidelines offered by federal, state, regional, and local governments and professional guidance provided by the …
Interviews On Main, Amanda Rose Forstrom
Interviews On Main, Amanda Rose Forstrom
Theses and Dissertations
Interviews On Main is the script of a one woman performance piece. It was conceived as an exploration and process of how to develop and write a working script, and later, see the piece come to fruition by producing, acting, and directing it. This solo show process has allowed me to delve into discovering my personal aesthetic in order to make a strong, individual artistic statement. Additionally, this process has helped me to learn how to be a solo creative artist, and to have cultivated individual material to perform when I am not cast professionally.
This thesis includes a table …

The Flying University, Catherine Friesen
The Flying University, Catherine Friesen
Theses and Dissertations
The Flying University is solo theater performance framed as an academic lecture about Marie Curie and her discovery of radium, delivered to a group of women who have gathered in secret to further their education. As the lecture proceeds, the professor brings in her own research based on a study of Esther Horsch (1905-1991) who lived on a farm in central Illinois. She introduces data from Esther's journals, personal memories, and dreams about Esther's life. The professor's investigation of radium plays at the intersections of magical and mundane, decay and the transformation of life, and the place of ambition in …
Moonbird, Samuel Kinsman
Moonbird, Samuel Kinsman
Theses and Dissertations
Love is a formless entity. Transformative and elusive, it can wreak havoc in one's life if misplaced. Unrequited love has potential toxicity, rage can stem from the most loving of places, and countless crimes of passion are committed every year.
However, in its base nature, love is formative. It has the potential to bring two separate energies together, the ensuing combination is what people dream of. The chemical process of love, the intellectual understanding of attraction and the visceral pit-in-stomach when one looks across the room at their lover are all worth exploring, especially in the theater.
In this piece …
Without A Net: Creating A One-Man Show, Joseph Timothy Mallon
Without A Net: Creating A One-Man Show, Joseph Timothy Mallon
Theses and Dissertations
During the Spring of 2011, I wrote and performed a one-man show entitled Hamlet and Pancakes, which was inspired by my Irish grandfather who used to cook pancakes for me while reading Shakespeare aloud. This sparked my love of all things theatre, food, and performance. This thesis contains the full script of that one-man show and it serves as an overview of the creative process that led to the show's development and evolution. What began as a seemingly daunting assignment quickly became one of the more enjoyable endeavors of my life as an actor. The show seemed to write itself …

El Rol De La Cultura Visual En El Desarrollo De Una Nueva Espacialidad En La Literatura Argentina, Maria Paula Rivero
El Rol De La Cultura Visual En El Desarrollo De Una Nueva Espacialidad En La Literatura Argentina, Maria Paula Rivero
Theses and Dissertations
This work explores the use of visual culture in Horacio Quiroga's 'La c├â┬ímara oscura', Julio Cort├â┬ízar's 'Apocalipsis de Solentiname', and Rodolfo Walsh's 'Fotos', focusing on its role in the development of a new conceptualization of the argentine space. The visual culture in these short stories, represented through the art of photography, gives the reader a new way of access into a national space that has been historically established by a politically dominated narrative. While the past rhetoric has been characterized by recognizing the territory as empty and assigning it the preferred meaning, these short stories revert such mechanism by developing …
An Analysis Of The Possibilities Of Applying The North American Management Model To Most Large-Scale Sports Facilities In China, Xi Li
Theses and Dissertations
As more and more international mega events such as the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Universiade Shenzhen 2011,the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games as well as the China National Sports Games take place in different cities, a lot of large-scale sports facilities have been built in China. However, over a long period of time, these large-scale sports facilities struggle with several operational and maintenance problems, such as high maintenance fees, design defects, low use of efficiency, single functionality and management challenges. This situation did not change until a group of North American facilities management companies came to China in the last few …
Shifting Landscapes: The Social And Economic Development Of Aqaba, Jordan, Kimberly K. Cavanagh
Shifting Landscapes: The Social And Economic Development Of Aqaba, Jordan, Kimberly K. Cavanagh
Theses and Dissertations
In my dissertation, 'Shifting Landscapes: the Social and Economic Development of Aqaba, Jordan', I examine the role of the global in (re)defining the local by considering the anticipated impact of the planned large-scale urban development within Aqaba. I contend that the identities of the citizens change as the city itself undergoes `renovation' through political adjustments, globalization, tourism development, and commercialization. I argue that these transformations provide opportunities of empowerment, albeit often limited, for marginalized populations who attempt to broaden the dominant local identity by taking advantage of new economic opportunities and increasing their agency within the city. This research provides …
Writing Across Differences: Afro-Germans, Gender, And Diaspora, 1970s-1990s, Tiffany Nicole Florvil
Writing Across Differences: Afro-Germans, Gender, And Diaspora, 1970s-1990s, Tiffany Nicole Florvil
Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation, "Writing Across Differences: Afro-Germans, Gender, and Diaspora, 1970s-1990s," explores the birth of the Afro-German movement, including its two organizations: The Initiative of Black Germans (Initiative Schwarze Deutsche, ISD) and Afro-German Women (Afro-deutsche Frauen, ADEFRA) in West and then reunified Germany. In it, I uncover the efforts of Black Germans to organize a diasporic and literary movement to confront discriminatory discourses and practices that simultaneously ignored them and positioned them as "Others" in postwar German society. Through their diverse literature and coordinated events, Black Germans enacted membership in the African diaspora, articulating and claiming an identity that supported a …
Taking Oaths And Giving Thanks: Ritual And Religion In Revolutionary America, Tara E. Strauch
Taking Oaths And Giving Thanks: Ritual And Religion In Revolutionary America, Tara E. Strauch
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the early modern ritual traditions of oaths, thanksgivings, and fast days in Revolutionary America and argues that American politicians and citizens negotiated the meanings of these rituals for American citizenship throughout the Revolutionary era. Oaths of office and allegiance, thanksgivings and fast days were tools for creating a united nation, but they also posed significant challenges because of the religious and political associations inherent in such rituals. These rituals came out of early modern Europe's religious and political culture which was useful for establishing America as a legitimate European nation. As colonials on the edge of the …

With a growing body of research that supports a link between language and literacy, governing bodies in the field of speech and language pathology have recognized the need to reconsider the role of speech-language pathologists in addressing the emergent literacy needs of preschoolers who struggle with literacy and language concepts. This study contributes to the research on speech and language pathology's clinical approaches by researching a blended approach to therapy using individualized language needs with embedded emergent literacy practices to expand not only the expressive and receptive language repertoire but also the emergent literacy learning of language-delayed preschool children receiving …
Chemical Leaching Methods And Measurements Of Marine Labile Particulate [Fe] And Δ56fe, Brandi Nicole Revels
Chemical Leaching Methods And Measurements Of Marine Labile Particulate [Fe] And Δ56fe, Brandi Nicole Revels
Theses and Dissertations
Iron (Fe) is an essential nutrient for life. However its low solubility in the seawater limits primary productivity in many regions of the world's oceans. Dissolved phase Fe (<0.4μm) has traditionally been considered the most biologically accessible form, but, recent studies suggest the particulate phase (>0.4μm) may contain an important, labile reservoir of Fe that may also be available to phytoplankton. Although valuable, Fe concentrations of particles alone do not provide complete evidence about the sources of particulate Fe to the ocean, or the extent particulate iron may be accessed by phytoplankton. Fe isotopes may help to reveal the biogeochemical cycling of particulate Fe. This study aims to develop a chemical leaching technique that accesses the …0.4μm)>
Applications Of The Lopsided Lovász Local Lemma Regarding Hypergraphs, Austin Tyler Mohr
Applications Of The Lopsided Lovász Local Lemma Regarding Hypergraphs, Austin Tyler Mohr
Theses and Dissertations
The Lovász local lemma is a powerful and well-studied probabilistic technique useful in establishing the possibility of simultaneously avoiding every event in some collection. A principle limitation of the lemma's application is that it requires most events to be independent of one another. The lopsided local lemma relaxes the requirement of independence to negative dependence, which is more general but also more difficult to identify. We will examine general classes of negative dependent events involving maximal matchings of uniform hypergraphs, partitions of sets, and spanning trees of complete graphs. The results on hypergraph matchings (together with the configuration model of …
The Meaning And Purpose Of Quotation And Stylistic Reference In Hans Werner Henze's Requiem: Nine Sacred Concertos For Piano Solo, Trumpet Concertante, And Large Chamber Orchestra (1990-92), Daniel C. Pappas
Theses and Dissertations
Quotation and stylistic reference are important communicative devices in the musical language of Hans Werner Henze that serve as a means of expression in his multilayered approach to composition. This study examines the central role that quotation and reference play in Hans Werner Henze's Requiem: Nine Sacred Concertos for piano solo, trumpet concertante, and large chamber orchestra (1990-92). While some studies have identified selected references, their primary focus has been on the work's pitch organization and formal plan. This study instead considers Henze's unique approach to quotation and reference. In addition to interviews with the composer, Henze's own writings are …
Building Resiliency: Supporting Elementary School Students Through Parental Bereavement, Sandra Kerr Ray
Building Resiliency: Supporting Elementary School Students Through Parental Bereavement, Sandra Kerr Ray
Theses and Dissertations
This study employed qualitative methods to learn what understandings, practices, and interventions were used by educators from one elementary school to support bereaved children in the classroom and as members of a school community. Educators reported uncertainty about how children grieve, how to talk with children about a deceased parent, how to talk with the bereaved child’s peers about parental death, and how to balance the bereaved child’s emotional and academic needs. Educators were also uncertain about how to recognize and intervene when a parental death was remote in time and the child’s grief response was attenuated (e.g., anxiety, disengagement, …
Accuracy, Cost And Performance Trade-Offs For Streaming Set-Wise Floating Point Accumulation On Fpgas, Krishna Kumar Nagar
Accuracy, Cost And Performance Trade-Offs For Streaming Set-Wise Floating Point Accumulation On Fpgas, Krishna Kumar Nagar
Theses and Dissertations
The set-wise summation operation is perhaps one of the most fundamental and widely used operations in scientific applications. In these applications, maintaining the accuracy of the summation is also important as floating point operations have inherent errors associated with them. Designing floating-point accumulators presents a unique set of challenges: double-precision addition is usually deeply pipelined and without special micro-architectural or data scheduling techniques, the data hazard that exists. There have been several efforts to design floating point accumulators and accurate summation architecture using different algorithms on FPGAs but these problems have been dealt with separately. In this dissertation, we present …

Brand Reputation And Product Recall, Anne Meike Eilert
Brand Reputation And Product Recall, Anne Meike Eilert
Theses and Dissertations
Every year, firms make numerous announcements to recall products that are deemed unsafe or defective. These recalls pose a significant threat to a firm's brand reputation. The strong, negative reactions of consumers and the media to the recalls initiated by Toyota in 2010 show how fragile brands are in the wake of a recall. Firms spend a great amount of resources on building strong brands and it is unclear how such brands influence the firm's decision to announce a recall and the consumer's decision to return the recalled product. The objective of this dissertation is to shed some light on …
Egocentric Biases In Consumer Judgment Of Products With And Without Target Market Labels, David Norton
Egocentric Biases In Consumer Judgment Of Products With And Without Target Market Labels, David Norton
Theses and Dissertations
Consumer research to date has posited that if we are cued to think of others, then we are likely to be influenced by the type of others we consider. Thus, research on product evaluations has focused on motivational accounts of either favoring or disfavoring a product contingent upon which specific reference group the product is associated with. In this dissertation I advance the theory that product evaluations are also cognitive in nature. Due to egocentric biases of self availability and self positivity I propose that the cueing of an 'other' lowers the valence of thoughts available (relative to thoughts of …
When Less Is More: The Effect Of Reducing Auditor Liability On Auditor Judgments In Principles-Based And Rules-Based Environments, Linda Quick
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the joint effects of accounting guidance type (principles-based versus rules-based) and legal liability regime (unlimited versus limited) on auditor decisions. Both the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) believe that moving to more principles-based standards in the United States will allow companies and auditors to more appropriately reflect the economic substance of transactions in the financial statements. However, very little attention has been paid to the possibility that principles-based standards will be applied differently in the United States than in other countries due to a different …
The Effects Of Social Costs And Internal Quality Reviews On Auditor Consultation Strategies, Tammie Janell Schaefer
The Effects Of Social Costs And Internal Quality Reviews On Auditor Consultation Strategies, Tammie Janell Schaefer
Theses and Dissertations
Seeking advice from knowledgeable individuals within the firm is an essential feature of firms' quality control systems and is intended to improve auditor decision making. It is important to understand factors that encourage or discourage auditors from proactively seeking out help and relying on the 'right' people because advice can influence audit judgments. Existing studies in accounting focus on factors that affect how auditors use the advice they obtain during informal consultations. In this study, I examine factors that affect when auditors seek advice, to whom auditors go for advice, and how they present audit issues to the advisor, which …
Unintended Consequences Of Regulated Contract Structure, Bryan W. Stewart
Unintended Consequences Of Regulated Contract Structure, Bryan W. Stewart
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the effect of contract structure (fixed versus contingent) and a contextual factor (positive versus negative benefit surprise) on tax professionals' behavior. Regulatory restrictions on contract structure are based on the belief that contingent fee contracts "encourage tax return preparers to take unsupported positions on the taxpayers' returns" (Murphy 1989, p. 2). Experienced tax professionals participated in an experiment investigating the effect of contract structure and benefit surprise on their judgments and decisions. Contrary to regulators' beliefs about the effect of contingent fee structures, I do not find a main effect of contract structure. Rather, results show that …
Insects As Indicators Of Environmental Stress, De Anna Estella Beasley
Insects As Indicators Of Environmental Stress, De Anna Estella Beasley
Theses and Dissertations
In the face of climate change-related events and anthropogenic disturbances, understanding the impacts of these events on species richness, abundance and distribution is important for us to mitigate biodiversity loss and better predict consequences for the environment and for human life. Insects are excellent models for understanding the consequences of environmental stress due to the sensitivity of their development and behavior. The overall focus of my dissertation research is the investigation of fluctuating asymmetry and oviposition behavior as indicators of environmental stress. My research includes a meta-analysis of published literature, and empirical research that was part of a collaborative initiative …
The Reproductive Ecology Of Plethodontid Salamanders In The South Carolina Inner Coastal Plain, Heather Rena Oswald
The Reproductive Ecology Of Plethodontid Salamanders In The South Carolina Inner Coastal Plain, Heather Rena Oswald
Theses and Dissertations
Nest- site selection is a critical process in the life history of amphibians, directly influencing offspring survival and parental fitness. When and where an amphibian chooses to nest is strongly influenced by a range of environmental cues. We monitored plethodontid salamander breeding behavior in seepage wetlands in the South Carolina inner Coastal Plain. Seepage wetlands are ideal for monitoring semiaquatic salamander breeding, because they provide habitat for both larval and adult salamanders while having relatively predictable, constant water temperatures and presence year round. We observed the breeding phenology of three sympatric salamanders (Eurycea cirrigera, Desmognathus auriculatus, and Pseudotriton ruber) in …
