Pulmonary Dwcnt Exposure Causes Sustained Local And Low-Level Systemic Inflammatory Changes In Mice, Furong Tian, Junja C. Habel-Ungewitter, Yin Renfu, Tobias Stoger

Articles

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) represent promising vectors to facilitate cellular drug delivery and to overcome biological barriers, but some types may also elicit persistent pulmonary inflammation based on their fibre characteristics. Here, we show the pulmonary response to aqueous suspensions of block copolymer dispersed, double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNT, length 1–10 lm) in mice by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) analysis, and BAL and blood cytokine and lung antioxidant profiling. The intratracheally instilled dose of 50 lg DWCNT caused significant pulmonary inflammation that was not resolved during a 7- day observation period. Light microscopy investigation of the uptake of DWCNT agglomerates revealed no particle …

Brief Communication: Evolution Of A Specific O Allele (O1vg542a) Supports Unique Ancestry Of Native Americans, Fernando A. Villanea, Deborah A. Bolnick, Cara Monroe, Rosita Worl, Rosemary Cambra, Alan M. Leventhal, Brian M. Kemp

Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning

In this study, we explore the geographic and temporal distribution of a unique variant of the O blood group allele called O1vG542A, which has been shown to be shared among Native Americans but is rare in other populations. O1vG542A was previously reported in Native American populations in Mesoamerica and South America, and has been proposed as an ancestry informative marker. We investigated whether this allele is also found in the Tlingit and Haida, two contemporary indigenous populations from Alaska, and a pre-Columbian population from California. If O1vG542A is present in Na-Dene speakers (i.e., Tlingits), it would indicate that Na-Dene speaking …

Neighborhood space and district is an issue that has been forgotten in contemporary architecture of cities. With regard to the quantitative increase of districts and also the increase of a unilateral physical view towards them, their security declines and consequently the capacity for crime increases in the residential spaces and fear of crime occurrence among the residents of the districts. In the environmental design, the CPTED attitude is one of the most effective approaches to enhance security. The main pivot of this article is to study the rate of agreements of the physical elements of old districts of Shiraz with …

Sekerei Mentawai: Keseharian Dan Tradisi Pengetahuan Lokal Yang Digerus Oleh Zaman, Lucky Zamzam

Antropologi Indonesia

Based on data from fieldwork in Mentawai, this article discusses the researcher’s interest in traditional medicine actors among the Mentawai people, namely Sekerei. The appeal of a Sekerei is realized through their modest daily lives, despite the effect these days of power from outside and modernity, that has so heavily eroded the local knowledge available. Sekerei are diminishing numbers, and medicinal herb findings are diminishing annually, showing that traditional healers have been split into two parts, namely fixed synergized with traditional natural life, or becoming a very important part in the globalization that is gripping the power of a Sekerei.

Marapu: Konstruksi Identitas Budaya Orang Sumba, Ntt, Purwadi Soeriadiredja

Antropologi Indonesia

This article examines how the people of Sumba construct their cultural identity associated with their religiosity in the face of discriminatory processed around them. The Sumbanese with their Marapu religion are discriminated againts because of the cultural identity attached to it, but due to their negative image. Discriminatory categories with all the attributes and roles attached to ithemare not natural constructs, but a history and representation. The cultural identity of the Sumbanese is the result of the interaction between the forces from the "outside" and the practices of their daily life. Marapu is a religion that serve as is the …

Restoring Native Plants Following Invasive Malephora Crocea (Coppery Iceplant, Aizoaceae) Eradication On Anacapa Island, Nathan William Hale

Master's Theses

To avoid unintended complications of invasive species eradication, it is important to understand the potential implications of the techniques used in species eradication efforts. This study aimed to compare how different methods of removing Malephora crocea affect the survivorship of planted seedlings of native perennial plants on Anacapa Island. Employing a randomized complete block design in an M. crocea stand, three removal treatments were tested: 1) hand-pull; 2) spray with herbicide and leave skeletons; and 3) spray and then remove skeletons after 2.5 months. In each treatment, seedlings of three species (Leptosyne gigantea, Frankenia salina, and Grindelia …

This Could Be A Game!": Defining Gamification For The Classroom, Darcy Elaine Osheim Jan 2013

This Could Be A Game!": Defining Gamification For The Classroom, Darcy Elaine Osheim

Master's Theses

Instructors find a gap between what they experienced in school in the mid-to-late 20th century and the experiences of students entering college in 2012/13. In the United States, the influx of almost universal access to technology has marked this generation in a way the previous generations must work to understand, and gamification is a strategy used in areas like marketing to gain participation from this age group. Gamification is a strategy that employs game mechanics, techniques, and theory in areas that traditionally are not set up to function like a game. The purpose of this study was to define gamification …

Foucault's Pendulum, A Classical Analog For The Electron Spin State, Rebecca Linck Jan 2013

Foucault's Pendulum, A Classical Analog For The Electron Spin State, Rebecca Linck

Master's Theses

Spin has long been regarded as a fundamentally quantum phenomena that is incapable of being described classically. To bridge the gap and show that aspects of spin's quantum nature can be described classically, this work uses a classical Lagrangian based on the coupled oscillations of Foucault's pendulum as an analog for the electron spin state in an external magnetic field. With this analog it is possible to demonstrate that Foucault's pendulum not only serves as a basis for explaining geometric phase, but is also a basis for reproducing a broad range of behavior from Zeeman-like frequency splitting to precession of …

The Effects Of Indoor Climbing Route Rating Manipulation On Participant Climbing Self-Efficacy, Phillip James Sandlin Jan 2013

The Effects Of Indoor Climbing Route Rating Manipulation On Participant Climbing Self-Efficacy, Phillip James Sandlin

Master's Theses

This quantitative study utilized a classical experiment design to explore the

effects of manipulation of indoor climbing route ratings on the climbing self-efficacy of 90 indoor rock climbers. Controversy surrounding the accuracy of the assigned ratings of indoor climbing routes is commonplace at indoor climbing facilities. For indoor rock climbers to accurately assess their abilities, set appropriate goals, and monitor their progress, they must be able to choose climbs that accurately represent their desired level of challenge. Statistical analysis of the data did not support a relationship between manipulation of climbing route ratings and any changes in participant climbing self-efficacy. …

The Effect Of Dietary Methylmercury On Na+, K+, -Atpase Activity And Growth In Fall-Run Chinook Salmon (O. Tshawytscha), John Negrey

Master's Theses

Hatchery reared Chinook salmon from California's Central Valley were fed for 67 days (Apr-Jun, 2008) on fish pellets mixed with either 0, 1, 3, or 5 µg*g-1 methylmercury hydroxide. Weight, fork length, condition factor, and Na+,K+- ATPase measurements were determined every two weeks and a 96-h seawater challenge was conducted at the conclusion of the experiment.

Results from two-way ANOVA, with treatment and date as independent variables, indicated no significant differences for weight (F3, 32 = 1.38; P = 0.280), length (F3, 32 = 0.986; P = 0.412) and condition factor (F3, 32 = 0.239; P = 0.869). Post-hoc analysis …

Hydrogen/Deuterium Exchange Mass Spectrometry For The Study Of Methanol-Induced Conformational Transitions In Ubiquitin, Steven Raul Rocha Jan 2013

Hydrogen/Deuterium Exchange Mass Spectrometry For The Study Of Methanol-Induced Conformational Transitions In Ubiquitin, Steven Raul Rocha

Master's Theses

In aqueous solutions with high concentrations of methanol at low pH, the global conformation of ubiquitin denatures to a structure of increased helical character at 50% methanol to a highly helical denatured structure at 90% methanol. Circular dichroism analysis and hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry experiments have been reported for the monitoring of alcohol-induced conformational transitions of ubiquitin upon exposure to increasing concentrations of methanol. A bottom-up analysis of deuterium labeled ubiquitin was used in this study to examine the local conformational transitions of ubiquitin upon exposure to solutions of varying concentrations of methanol. Analysis of ubiquitin and nine peptide fragments, …

Genetic And Biochemical Analyses Of Streptomyces Coelicolor Ftsz, Sepf, And Other Possible Ftsz-Interacting Proteins, Allen M. Kotun Jan 2013

Genetic And Biochemical Analyses Of Streptomyces Coelicolor Ftsz, Sepf, And Other Possible Ftsz-Interacting Proteins, Allen M. Kotun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For various bacteria, an assortment of proteins, many of which are nonessential for division, bind the C-terminal tip of FtsZ to help stabilize the Z-ring and tether it to the cytoplasmic membrane. S. coelicolor produces aerial hyphae that contain numerous, evenly-spaced Z-rings that jointly constrict to form a chain of spores. Our understanding of this developmental process is complicated by the lack of known FtsZ-interacting proteins. To date, only two proteins, SsgA and SsgB, have been found to aid in Z-ring localization. For this study, the 399 amino acid FtsZ, multiple FtsZ C-terminal tip variants, and four putative FtsZ-associated proteins …

Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Oxidized Eicosapentaenoic Acid Sodium Salt, Kelsey D. Jordan, Rita K. Upmacis

Faculty Papers and Publications

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) with 20 carbon atoms and 5 carbon-carbon double bonds. Mammalian cells cannot synthesize long chain PUFAs such as EPA de novo, and, thus, the most effective way to enrich cells in EPA is by dietary intake of fish oils. EPA supplementation causes an increase in its concentration in plasma lipids and in cell membrane phospholipids. Many beneficial effects of EPA supplementation have been noted, including (1) the potential to sensitize cancerous tumors towards chemotherapy, (2) the promotion of cardiovascular health, and (3) the alleviation of some mental disorders, but results …

After Assad: Syria’S Post-Conflict Reconstruction, H. M. Roff Jan 2013

After Assad: Syria’S Post-Conflict Reconstruction, H. M. Roff

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Simon Adams and Condoleezza Rice warn us that with the portended fall of Syria's Bashar al-Assad, the country could witness even more heinous crimes and, potentially, regional political fallout. These worries are not unfounded. However, what seems to be truly missing in their discussions is any mention of post-conflict reconstruction planning. This is unfortunate, as much handwringing is still occurring over "what to do" in Syria, and it will continue until there is a clear vision of what to do after this civil war. Syria's post-conflict reconstruction plan is—or should be—inherently tied to its current operational agenda.

The Dsm-5 Dimensional Trait Model And The Five Factor Model, Whitney L. Gore Jan 2013

The Dsm-5 Dimensional Trait Model And The Five Factor Model, Whitney L. Gore

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

The current thesis tests empirically the relationship of the dimensional trait model proposed for the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders with five-factor models (FFM) of personality disorder (PD). The DSM-5 Personality and Personality Disorders Work Group proposes to diagnose the disorders largely in terms of a 25 trait dimensional model organized within five broad domains (i.e., negative affectivity, detachment, antagonism, disinhibition, and psychoticism). Consistent with the authors of DSM-5, it was predicted that negative affectivity would align with FFM neuroticism, detachment with FFM introversion, antagonism with FFM antagonism, disinhibition with …
