Ligation-Dependent Multiplex Pcr With Bead-Based Array Detection Comprises A Clinically Adaptable Method Of Microrna Profiling, Bobbi Ellen Johnston Jan 2013

Ligation-Dependent Multiplex Pcr With Bead-Based Array Detection Comprises A Clinically Adaptable Method Of Microrna Profiling, Bobbi Ellen Johnston

Dissertations

Ligation-dependent PCR, when coupled with a bead-based detection array, comprises a method of nucleic acid detection that utilizes enzymes and equipment already being employed successfully in clinical labs. The process can be multiplexed in order to generate a profile of the sequences of interest. When applied to microRNA profiling, the ligation step requires modification to improve the efficiency of the T4 DNA ligase employed. With optimization, the assay has the potential to distinguish and detect multiple microRNA species simultaneously, providing a clinically adaptable method for microRNA profiling. The flexibility of the assay format would allow modification for a nearly limitless …

A Z-Based Formal Framework And Comprehensive Toolkit For The Extraction And Analysis Of Object-Oriented Design State Space And Structural Metrics, Raouf Alomainy

Dissertations

The syntax-based (structural) software metrics are quantitative measures of programs. They have been used to predict various software quality factors. There are many studies on software structural metrics over the years. However, these metrics lack a formal foundation that explains the nature of measurement. The objective of this research is to propose a Z-based theoretical framework for the extraction of object-oriented (OO) design state space and structural metrics to help guide and improve the design and development of software systems using mathematically rigorous methods. To show the framework works, we selected several representative categories of syntax-based metrics that measure different …

A Quantitative Model Of Relative Ethical Violation For Use In Military Decision-Making, Gregory S. Reed Jan 2013

A Quantitative Model Of Relative Ethical Violation For Use In Military Decision-Making, Gregory S. Reed

Dissertations

As the embodiment of rational cause-and-effect, game and decision theory methods dominated the second half of the 20th century and continue to flourish today. Machine ethics, a very nascent field, involves developing machines (either as tangible hardware or as mathematical or logical models) with ethics codified as principles and procedures, in turn allowing them to consider ethical "cause-and-effect" of potential actions. A model known as the Metric of Evil (the "Metric") was first conceived by a branch of the United States Army, primarily intended for use by the Army itself. The Metric was inspired by a perceived gap in military …

Dynamic Management Of Coexistence In Ieee 802.15.4-Based Health Monitoring Wireless Body Area Networks, Mohammad Deylami Jan 2013

Dynamic Management Of Coexistence In Ieee 802.15.4-Based Health Monitoring Wireless Body Area Networks, Mohammad Deylami

Dissertations

Health monitoring Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) are systems with stringent demands regarding various performance metrics. The information collected and processed by WBANs is used in the diagnosis of health conditions; therefore, reliability of communication is a critical issue. The overlap of transmission ranges between wireless networks as a result of mobility, known as dynamic coexistence, is a major source of interference that may significantly affect the operation of WBANs in medical environments. In this dissertation, we study the effects of dynamic coexistence on the operation of IEEE 802.15.4-based health monitoring WBANs. We investigate the candidate wireless technologies for WBAN …

The Impact Of Rfp Phase Project Scope Development On The Successful Outcome Of Construction Projects Using The Design Build Project Delivery Method, Wk Thomas Jan 2013

The Impact Of Rfp Phase Project Scope Development On The Successful Outcome Of Construction Projects Using The Design Build Project Delivery Method, Wk Thomas

Dissertations

The objective of this research was to determine whether a relationship exists between the level of scope definition during the Request for Proposal (RFP) phase of a construction project using the specific case of design build delivery method and the successful outcome of the project. Historically the literature suggests that project success varies with individual perspective and can include attributes beyond the classical metrics of cost and schedule. The data gathered for this research represents the perspective of the project manager. A new test instrument was developed to gage the level of design build construction project success and includes success …

Numerical Modeling Of Multi-Component Spray Evaporation Process, Omid Samimi Abianeh Jan 2013

Numerical Modeling Of Multi-Component Spray Evaporation Process, Omid Samimi Abianeh

Dissertations

The overarching goal of this study is to develop a mathematical methodology for finding a fuel surrogate mixture composition and implementing computationally effective models that can predict the evaporation of multi-component fuel droplets/spray using a multidimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code. A new concept for modeling fuel surrogate is initially developed. Following this, a multi-component fuel droplets/spray coalescence model that builds on previously developed models is derived. Finally, a multi component fuel evaporation model is developed. All the sub-models are implemented for the first time in a multidimensional CFD code, and results are shown to be in good overall agreement …

Effects Of Plasma Jet Parameters, Ionization, Thermal Conduction, And Radiation On Stagnation Conditions Of An Imploding Plasma Liner, Miloš Stanić Jan 2013

Effects Of Plasma Jet Parameters, Ionization, Thermal Conduction, And Radiation On Stagnation Conditions Of An Imploding Plasma Liner, Miloš Stanić

Dissertations

The disciplines of High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) and Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) are characterized by hypervelocity implosions and strong shocks. The Plasma Liner Experiment (PLX) is focused on reaching HEDP and/or ICF relevant regimes in excess of 1 Mbar peak pressure by the merging and implosion of discrete plasma jets, as a potentially efficient path towards these extreme conditions in a laboratory. In this work we have presented the first 3D simulations of plasma liner, formation, and implosion by the merging of discrete plasma jets in which ionization, thermal conduction, and radiation are all included in the physics model. …

Analytical Evaluation Of The Trajectories Of Hypersonic Projectiles Launched Into Space, John David Stutz Jan 2013

Analytical Evaluation Of The Trajectories Of Hypersonic Projectiles Launched Into Space, John David Stutz

Dissertations

An equation of motion has been derived that may be solved using simple analytic functions which describes the motion of a projectile launched from the surface of the Earth into space accounting for both Newtonian gravity and aerodynamic drag. The equation of motion is based upon the Kepler equation of motion differential and variable transformations with the inclusion of a decaying angular momentum driving function and appropriate simplifying assumptions. The new equation of motion is first compared to various numerical and analytical trajectory approximations in a non-rotating Earth reference frame. The Modified Kepler solution is then corrected to include Earth …

Analysis Of Solar Lyman-Alpha Scattering In The Heliosphere, Brian Fayock Jan 2013

Analysis Of Solar Lyman-Alpha Scattering In The Heliosphere, Brian Fayock

Dissertations

Computational models of the global heliospheric interaction with the local interstellar medium have evolved to include very fine and complex physical details. While these models began from theory, the observations and measurements of various spacecraft have been able to provide comparisons to simulations over time, resulting in corrections, adjustments, or additions to certain aspects, and thus a better understanding of the problem. One aspect of great interest is the interaction of neutral hydrogen within the heliosphere. Its inclusion into models is quite complex and still in need of verification. The results of our model are able to provide such a …

Development Of Unsaturated Flow Functions For Low Impact Development Stormwater Management Systems Filter Media And Flow Routines For Hydrological Modeling Of Permeable Pavement Systems, Iulia Aurelia Barbu Jan 2013

Development Of Unsaturated Flow Functions For Low Impact Development Stormwater Management Systems Filter Media And Flow Routines For Hydrological Modeling Of Permeable Pavement Systems, Iulia Aurelia Barbu

Doctoral Dissertations

Low Impact Development - Stormwater Management (LID-SWM) systems are relatively new technologies that were developed in order to meet the water quality criteria imposed by the Clean Water Act. LID-SWM is also used to replicate the natural hydrology of developed sites. However, the hydrological benefits of LID systems cannot be accurately predicted with the existing simulation models. Currently used software packages represent LID systems as storage units and do not specifically represent water routing through the systems' hydraulically restrictive sublayers. Since the LID's functionality at system level is not fully understood, the relationships of design variables and the systems' hydrological …

Demographic Trends In Nonmetropolitan America: Implications For Land Use Development And Conservation., Kenneth M. Johnson Jan 2013

Demographic Trends In Nonmetropolitan America: Implications For Land Use Development And Conservation., Kenneth M. Johnson

Sociology

This research contributes new information delineating the rapidity and geographic scale at which demographic change is occurring in non-metropolitan America. Rural areas are being buffeted by economic, social, and governmental transformations from far beyond their borders. These structural transformations are reflected in the demographic trends playing out across the vast rural landscape in the first decade of the twenty-first century. The patterns of demographic change in rural America are complex and subtle, but their impact is not. Population change has significant implications for the people, places, and institutions of rural America; for the natural environment that is a fundamental part …
