Demographic Trends In Nonmetropolitan America: Implications For Land Use Development And Conservation., Kenneth M. Johnson Jan 2013

Demographic Trends In Nonmetropolitan America: Implications For Land Use Development And Conservation., Kenneth M. Johnson

Sociology

This research contributes new information delineating the rapidity and geographic scale at which demographic change is occurring in non-metropolitan America. Rural areas are being buffeted by economic, social, and governmental transformations from far beyond their borders. These structural transformations are reflected in the demographic trends playing out across the vast rural landscape in the first decade of the twenty-first century. The patterns of demographic change in rural America are complex and subtle, but their impact is not. Population change has significant implications for the people, places, and institutions of rural America; for the natural environment that is a fundamental part …

Father Stanisław Musiał, S.J.: The Courage To Confront, Agata Wyszynski Jan 2013

Father Stanisław Musiał, S.J.: The Courage To Confront, Agata Wyszynski

Masters Essays

How does one surpass the ordinary, especially when one’s ordinary surroundings disclose prejudice and hostility? In her essay entitled, On Relationship as a Key to Interreligious Dialogue, Doris Donnelly observed that there is “...goodness to be seen in ordinary people doing ordinary things under extraordinary circumstances — people whose lives are a powerful witness to their faith.”1 One such ordinary person was Father Stanisław Musiał, S.J., whose Jesuit education, friendship with Jews, and participation in dialogue and negotiations with Jews allowed him to transcend the anti-Semitic culture of the post-World War II epoch in Poland.

The Accumulation Of The Cyanobacterial Toxin, Microcystin, In Cherry Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum) And Bush Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris) Plants, Bethany R. Lefebvre Jan 2013

The Accumulation Of The Cyanobacterial Toxin, Microcystin, In Cherry Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum) And Bush Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris) Plants, Bethany R. Lefebvre

Center for Freshwater Biology

We aimed to develop a high-sensitivity method to detect microcystin toxins in fruit tissue and to determine if irrigation with water containing toxic cyanobacteria may result in accumulation of microcystin toxins in fruit tissue and affect fruit development. In a greenhouse experiment bush beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum) were grown in the summer under natural light and temperature between the months of September and August. Mature plants received treatments of toxic, Microcystis aeruginosa, applied twice weekly to the soil. To simulate naturally contaminated irrigation water, the M. aeruginosa were applied to plants as a suspension of intact …

Effect Of Telomerase Inhibitors On Malignant Breast Cancer Cells, Alexander J. Fisch, Osman V. Patel Jan 2013

Effect Of Telomerase Inhibitors On Malignant Breast Cancer Cells, Alexander J. Fisch, Osman V. Patel

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Current therapies have nominal effect on the most intrusive-type of breast cancers (triple-negative) that have a higher tendency to metastasize or recur. Recent studies reveal an enzyme, telomerase, as key for unlimited cell growth (immortality) and replication. Therefore, our objectives were to assess (i) short- and (ii) long-term effects of a novel anti-telomerase agent (GV6) developed at our institute and compare it to a known analogue, BIBR1532 on MDA-MB 231 breast cancer cells. Cell viability was measured on days 5, 9, 14, 18 and 27 after treatment with GV6 (n=4), BIBR1532 (n=4) or Solvent alone (Control, n=3). The number of …

Interaction Of The Geomagnetic Field With Northward Interplanetary Magnetic Field, Shree K. Bhattarai Jan 2013

Interaction Of The Geomagnetic Field With Northward Interplanetary Magnetic Field, Shree K. Bhattarai

Physics Dissertations - Archive

The interaction of the solar wind with Earth's magnetic field causes the transfer of momentum and energy from the solar wind to geospace. The study of this interaction is gaining significance as our society is becoming more and more space based, due to which, predicting space weather has become more important. The solar wind interacts with the geomagnetic field primarily via two processes: viscous interaction and the magnetic reconnection. Both of these interactions result in the generation of an electric field in Earth's ionosphere. The overall topology and dynamics of the magnetosphere, as well as the electric field imposed on …

Can We Say More Now? A Closer Look At Online Public Opinion Change In China, Ran Duan Jan 2013

Can We Say More Now? A Closer Look At Online Public Opinion Change In China, Ran Duan

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

This study examined the pattern of online public opinion change in China by investigating the top one hit blog and its following commentaries of every day from July 2009 to March 2012 on a famous Chinese website, and then discussed potential factors that affected the formation of online public opinion. The extent of freedom of online public opinion during this period presented regular fluctuations. Whether criticisms were registered by commentators was influenced by four factors. First and most important, the negative tone of bloggers increased criticism and the positive tone decreased criticism, which shows that the news that flows from …

Examination Of The Use Of Online And Offline Networks By Housing Social Movement Organizations, Jessica N. Kropczynski Jan 2013

Examination Of The Use Of Online And Offline Networks By Housing Social Movement Organizations, Jessica N. Kropczynski

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

Resource mobilization theory and political opportunity theory are often used to describe separate portions of social movements. This dissertation proposes a combined model of these two theoretical perspectives which describes how social movement organizations effectively engage in social marketing both online and offline. The field of social marketing highlights the utility of standard commercial marketing practices to achieve non-commercial goals. I argue that, while commercial marketing practices may benefit social movement organizations and are more cost effective given emerging technology, momentum for gathering resources, will be stifled unless a political opportunity presents itself. Guided by theory about the ways that …

Untangling Neoliberalism’S Gordian Knot: Cancer Prevention And Control Services For Rural Appalachian Populations, George F. Bills Jan 2013

Untangling Neoliberalism’S Gordian Knot: Cancer Prevention And Control Services For Rural Appalachian Populations, George F. Bills

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

In eastern Kentucky, as in much of central Appalachia, current local storylines narrate the frictions and contradictions involved in the structural transition from a post-WWII Fordist industrial economy and a Keynesian welfare state to a Post-Fordist service economy and Neoliberal hollow state, starving for energy to sustain consumer indulgence (Jessop, 1993; Harvey, 2003; 2005). Neoliberalism is the ideological force redefining the “societal infrastructure of language” that legitimates this transition, in part by redefining the key terms of democracy and citizenship, as well as valorizing the market, the individual, and technocratic innovation (Chouliaraki & Fairclough, 1999; Harvey, 2005). This project develops …

Natural Treatment Systems As Sustainable Ecotechnologies For The Developing Countries, Qaisar Mahmood, Arshid Pervez, Bibi Saima Zeb, Habiba Zaffar, Hajra Yaqoob, Muhammad Waseem, Zahidullah, Sumera Afsheen

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

The purpose of natural treatment systems is the re-establishment of disturbed ecosystems and their sustainability for benefits to human and nature. The working of natural treatment systems on ecological principles and their sustainability in terms of low cost, low energy consumption, and low mechanical technology is highly desirable. The current review presents pros and cons of the natural treatment systems, their performance, and recent developments to use them in the treatment of various types of wastewaters. Fast population growth and economic pressure in some developing countries compel the implementation of principles of natural treatment to protect natural environment. The employment …

Teaching Basic Transfer Pricing Inductively Using A Student Price-Negotiation Case, Eric W. Typpo, Stephen Wheeler Jan 2013

Teaching Basic Transfer Pricing Inductively Using A Student Price-Negotiation Case, Eric W. Typpo, Stephen Wheeler

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

Students in an introductory management accounting course are given a brief introduction to the concept of transfer pricing and presented with a transfer pricing problem without any guidance on how to solve the problem. The problem requires groups of students to play the role of a selling(buying) division and determine an acceptable minimum(maximum) price for their group before negotiating with other groups. Students learn transfer pricing inductively as they work through the details of the case and arrive at a profit maximizing price for the product they are selling(buying).

Translation And Adaptation Of The Social Emotional Competence Development Scale, Sebastian Vaida, Craig R. Seal, Stefanie E. Naumann Jan 2013

Translation And Adaptation Of The Social Emotional Competence Development Scale, Sebastian Vaida, Craig R. Seal, Stefanie E. Naumann

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

This paper provides a cross-validation study of the Social Emotional Competence Inventory (SECD-I) from English to Romanian. The intent was to determine if the SECDI-I measure retained adequate internal validity after translation. Results suggest that the translated measure, called the Competenţe Socio Emoţionale scale, is a valid instrument for evaluating the social emotional competencies for young adults in a Romanian-speaking sample.
