Madrid Cómico Confronts The Anarchist Bombing Campaigns, Vernon Chamberlin
Madrid Cómico Confronts The Anarchist Bombing Campaigns, Vernon Chamberlin
Decimonónica
Founded in 1880, the eight-page weekly newspaper Madrid Cómico rapidly established its niche and by 1888 enjoyed a circulation of 10,000. It was distributed and read throughout Spain. In addition to personal subscriptions, it was available in cafés, casinos, barber shops, boarding houses, and street kiosks. Madrid Cómico was markedly different from the established press in that its approach was emphatically festive and satirical. It frequently featured a well-known person on its cover, caricatured by an accurate face and head on a doll-sized body. Inside, in addition to a vibrant literary section, there were cartoons, jokes, festive poems, editorial commentary, …

Towards Efficient Stochastic Optimization Of Functions Of Convex Sets, Christian J. Convey
Towards Efficient Stochastic Optimization Of Functions Of Convex Sets, Christian J. Convey
Open Access Dissertations
Let D be a DAG and let X be any non-empty subset of D's vertices. X is a convex set of D if D contains a path that originates in X, and then leaves X, and then re-enters X. This work presents basic convexity algorithms for creating, growing, and shrinking convex sets using two different approaches: predecessor and successor sets, and topological orderings. It shows that the algorithms based on predecessor and successor sets typically have higher asymptotic running times than those based on topological ordering. However, when creating a convex set based upon a potentially …

Integrating A Periphery Of Exotic 'Others': Ethnic Tourism And The State In China's Xinjiang And Guangxi Provinces, Dara Osher
Theses & ETDs
Since China's embrace of a market economy and rapid economic development along the eastern coastline, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has realized the opportunity in promoting a tourism market within the more impoverished Western interior. Greater wealth and leisure time for domestic citizens, coupled with increased international access to China, has resulted in a boom in the tourism industry. The CCP seeks to legitimate its rule via a new national identity that would include the majority Han Chinese and the country's 55 officially recognized ethnic minority groups. A burgeoning tourism market, subsidized partially by the government, allows for these shaoshu …
Disaster Tradeoffs: The Doubtful Case For Public Necessity, Susan S. Kuo
Disaster Tradeoffs: The Doubtful Case For Public Necessity, Susan S. Kuo
Faculty Publications
When government takes private property for a public purpose, the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution requires just compensation. Courts, however, have long recognized an exception to takings law for the destruction of private property when necessary to prevent a public disaster. In those circumstances, unless the state accepts an obligation to pay damages, individuals must bear their own losses. This Article contends that the public necessity defense should be rejected. First, the tight time frame and limited options typical in a disaster response threaten to obscure the crucial role of government in planning for disasters and mitigating vulnerability. Second, …

Synthesis Of Substituted Pyrrolo[2,3-D]Pyrimidines As Microtubule-Binding Agents And Hsp90 Inhibitors, Lu Lin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An introduction, background and recent advances in the areas of microtubule-binding agents and heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) inhibitors as anticancer agents are briefly reviewed. The work in this dissertation is centered on the synthesis of substituted pyrrolo[2, 3-d]pyrimidines as potential anticancer agents that act via microtubule inhibition or HSP90 inhibition..
Microtubule-binding agents are effective against a broad range of tumors and lymphomas and have been common components of combination cancer-chemotherapy in the clinic. Despite the unparalleled success, drawbacks among microtubule-binding agents such as multi-drug resistance, dose-limiting toxicity, poor pharmacokinetic profile and high cost have supported the sustaining momentum in …
The Metalogicon Of John Of Salisbury: Medieval Rhetoric As Educational Praxis, Brian Gilchrist
The Metalogicon Of John Of Salisbury: Medieval Rhetoric As Educational Praxis, Brian Gilchrist
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation addresses the following question: what are the implications of John of Salisbury's rhetorical theory for his approach to education? The Metalogicon, John's defense of the trivium, represents the primary text analyzed throughout the project. John's medieval rhetorical theory explicated the reciprocal relationship between rhetoric and education. The art of rhetoric acquired educational elements by providing ethical-theoretical frameworks to inform the practices of students and teachers. Experiences from the practices of students and teachers influenced the art of rhetoric. John called for an approach to medieval rhetorical education that could be placed into the service of all people living …

Simulacra's Day In The U.S. Supreme Court: Brown Versus Entertainment Merchants Association And United States Versus Stevens, Nachshon Goltz, Aleksander Nikolic
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
This paper will argue that the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown versus Entertainment Merchants Association, (prohibition of the sale of “violent video games” to minors is unconstitutional), and its predecessor, the same Court decision in United States versus Stevens, (prohibition of sale of animal abuse videos is unconstitutional), are both biased by Jean Baudrillard's notion of Simulacra. It is argued that Justice Alito’s opinion in Brown, (joining the majority only in his conclusion), and his dissent opinion in Stevens, is the only voice acknowledging the Simulacra bias. Moreover, by formally joining the majority in Brown, (a Simulacra act of its …

Gpu Ray Traced Rendering And Image Fusion Based Visualization Of Urban Terrain For Enhanced Situation Awareness, Lingling Sik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Urban activities involving planning, preparing for and responding to time critical situations often demands sound situational awareness of overall settings. Decision makers, who are tasked to respond effectively to emergencies, must be equipped with information on the details of what is happening, and must stay informed with updates as the event unfolds and remain attentive to the extent of impact the dynamics of the surrounding settings might have. Recent increases in the volumes of geo-spatial data such as satellite imageries, elevation maps, street-level photographs and real-time imageries from remote sensory devices affect the way decision makers make assessments in time-critical …
Use Of Integrated Training Environments To Sustain Army Warfighting Proficiency In An Era Of Constrained Resources: Understanding What's Required To Win The First Battle Of The Next Conflict, Edward Lerz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research investigates the current state and ability of homestation training infrastructure (TADSS, networks, and facilities) and framework for training (scenarios, databases, and training support packages) to support a Live Virtual Constructive – Integrating Architecture (LVC-IA) delivered Integrated Training Environment (ITE). As combat operations in Central and Southwest Asia come to a close the Army is faced with extreme post-conflict budget cuts and force reductions. Continued evolution of Army training methodology is required to overcome limited resources and maintain force readiness in the anticipated “era of persistent conflict”. A LVC-IA delivered ITE promises to be the next step in the …
The Need For International Laws Of War To Include Cyber Attacks Involving State And Non-State Actors, Christopher D. Deluca
The Need For International Laws Of War To Include Cyber Attacks Involving State And Non-State Actors, Christopher D. Deluca
Pace International Law Review Online Companion
This article argues that existing international laws of war are inadequate and need to be adjusted and clearly defined to include cyber attacks involving state and non-state actors. Part II of this article describes the different forms and increasing use of cyber attacks in international conflicts. Part III focuses on the importance and relevance of non-state actors in the international community and today’s asymmetric battlefield. Part IV discusses the applicability of current international laws of war to cyber attacks. Part V of this article suggests ways in which current international law can be improved to include and regulate cyber attacks …
Mission Aware Energy Saving Strategies For Army Ground Vehicles, Macam Dattathreya
Mission Aware Energy Saving Strategies For Army Ground Vehicles, Macam Dattathreya
Wayne State University Dissertations
Fuel energy is a basic necessity for this planet and the modern technology to perform many activities on earth. On the other hand, quadrupled automotive vehicle usage by the commercial industry and military has increased fuel consumption. Military readiness of Army ground vehicles is very important for a country to protect its people and resources. Fuel energy is a major requirement for Army ground vehicles. According to a report, a department of defense has spent nearly $13.6 billion on fuel and electricity to conduct ground missions. On the contrary, energy availability on this plant is slowly decreasing. Therefore, saving energy …
The Convention On The Rights Of Persons With Disabilities: Reflection On Four Flaws That Tarnish Its Promise, Lucia A. Silecchia
The Convention On The Rights Of Persons With Disabilities: Reflection On Four Flaws That Tarnish Its Promise, Lucia A. Silecchia
Scholarly Articles
On December 13, 2006, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (“CRPD”). Widely touted as the “first comprehensive human rights treaty of the 21st century,” and effusively praised for its open negotiation process, the CRPD was opened for signature on March 30, 2007. The CRPD quickly entered into force on May 3, 2008. As it rapidly amassed signatories, the CRPD inspired great hope that its comprehensive approach would do much to overcome the consistent failure to promote the dignity of those with disabilities in meaningfully concrete ways.
The CRPD has garnered much recent and …
The Life Individual Resilience Scale And Cognitive Reflection Test : Predictive Utility In Special Forces Selection, Anthony Moffitt
The Life Individual Resilience Scale And Cognitive Reflection Test : Predictive Utility In Special Forces Selection, Anthony Moffitt
Theses : Honours
The use of psychometric testing by the military in the screening and selection of its personnel has played a significant role in test development (Aiken, 1997). Several studies have demonstrated the utility of such tests to identify and select elite Special Forces personnel specifically for their employment in complex and dangerous environments (Picano, Roland, Williams, & Rollins, 2006). Research of additional discrete personal attributes beyond traditional cognitive ability and personality traits has inspired studies into the measurement of specific aspects of performance, including perseverance, hardiness and decision-making (e.g., Beal, 2010; Temby & Drobnjak, 2010). However, the empirical evidence for these …

Crowns Of Honor Sacred Laws Of Eagle-Feather War Bonnets And Repatriating The Icon Of The Great Plains, Leo Killsback
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
I dedicate this article to all the current Cheyenne Council of Forty-Four Chiefs, headmen of the warrior societies, and combat veterans, as well as modern tribal leaders, warriors, ceremonial practitioners, and tribal citizens who continue to use eagles in the traditional manner, thus ensuring the survival of the warrior ways.
In 2010 a war bonnet belonging to Oglala Lakota chief Fools Crow was repatriated to hereditary chief Mel Lone Hill of Batesland, South Dakota, which is located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Fools Crow’s war bonnet was of the original warrior types, made of immature golden eagle tail feathers, …
The Civilian And The War On Terror: Do Norms Shape Strategy?, Sherri Replogle
The Civilian And The War On Terror: Do Norms Shape Strategy?, Sherri Replogle
Dissertations
Despite a growing research agenda centered on issues of civilian immunity, it remains unclear what effect norms protecting civilians have on state behavior, especially democracies. This study asks when and how the civilian immunity norm (CIN) matters, specifically examining how it alters short term strategic choices and even long term doctrines.
Employing a constructivist approach to examine shifting attitudes toward civilians within the military during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, this study argues that democracies will choose strategic outcomes that strengthen compliance with the CIN when they see the constraining normative environment as a key part of the strategic environment. …
Gothic Slumming: Realist Writers And Gothic Texts In Progressive Era America, Gillian Nelson Bauer
Gothic Slumming: Realist Writers And Gothic Texts In Progressive Era America, Gillian Nelson Bauer
Dissertations
During the Progressive Era, American realist and naturalist writers frequently employed the gothic mode. In contrast with critics who contend that the gothic is a subversive or disruptive mode, I suggest that the relationship between realism and the gothic is one of collaboration rather than conflict. These modally mixed works, which I refer to as gothic realism, express class anxieties that arose during this period, concerns that resulted from the rapid urbanization, immigration, increased cross-class interaction, and economic precariousness that mark the latter end of the nineteenth and the early years of the twentieth centuries. Following Teresa Goddu, I consider …

Top Ten Reasons Sen. Gillibrand’S Bill Is The Wrong Solution To Military Sexual Assault, Charles J. Dunlap Jr.
Faculty Scholarship
Over the years Congress has made plenty of efforts to “improve” the military justice system for a variety of reasons, but few matters have generated more offerings than did the Pentagon’s report this past spring of an estimated 26,000 victims of “unwanted sexual contacts” in the armed forces. Some initiatives to address this very critical problem, like the bipartisan effort of Senators Barbara Boxer and Lindsey Graham, look promising; others, not so much.
However, none are as misguided as Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s proposal. Indeed, it is hard to think of a proposal that could be more wrong for the military, …
A Case Study Of One Service Member With Traumatic Limb Loss And The Decision Of Whether Or Not To Return To Duty, Carly Braun
A Case Study Of One Service Member With Traumatic Limb Loss And The Decision Of Whether Or Not To Return To Duty, Carly Braun
Online Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this qualitative case study was to describe the experience of one service member's decision of whether or not to return to duty (RTD) following limb amputation. The participants included a combat-wounded amputee and an occupational therapist who worked with the amputee during his period of transition. Participants were interviewed over the phone. Data from the interviews was transcribed and analyzed by a manual coding process. The service member completed a self-report questionnaire called the Values in Action Inventory of Strengths. Four themes were found: 1) the decision to RTD takes a long time, 2) life factors before …
Suicide Terrorism: Understanding The Mindset And Motives, Joshua Daniel Goss
Suicide Terrorism: Understanding The Mindset And Motives, Joshua Daniel Goss
Online Theses and Dissertations
Suicide Terrorism plays major roles in devastating and destructing cities and their people while communities try to fight the Global War on Terrorism. The devastation and destruction can either be focused on individuals or a certain infrastructure. There are two tactics of executing the acts of suicide terrorism; strapping explosives to their bodies and or steering some sort of transportation into a place of gathering. The methodology of this study is an auto-ethnography. The auto-ethnography is designed to find understanding of personal experiences using a qualitative method of study. Understanding the motives and mindset of suicide terrorist can be very …
Electron Transport Models And Precision Measurements With The Constant Voltage Conductivity Method, Justin Dekany, Jr Dennison, Alec Sim, Jerilyn Brunson
Electron Transport Models And Precision Measurements With The Constant Voltage Conductivity Method, Justin Dekany, Jr Dennison, Alec Sim, Jerilyn Brunson
Graduate Student Publications
Recent advances are described in the techniques, resolution, and sensitivity of the Constant Voltage Conductivity (CVC) method and the understanding of the role of charge injection mechanisms and the evolution of internal charge distributions in associated charge transport theories. These warrant reconsideration of the appropriate range of applicability of this test method to spacecraft charging. We conclude that under many (but not all) common spacecraft charging scenarios, careful CVC tests provide appropriate evaluation of conductivities down to ≈10-22 (Ω-cm)-1, corresponding to decay times of many years.
We describe substantial upgrades to an existing CVC chamber, which improved the precision of …
The Legal And Ethical Limits Of Technological Warfare: Introduction, Amos N. Guiora
The Legal And Ethical Limits Of Technological Warfare: Introduction, Amos N. Guiora
Utah Law Review
Deciding a year in advance the theme of a law review symposium is, at best, a tricky proposition. The considerations are varied: what topic will be relevant to academics and policymakers, who shoul dbe invited as panelists, how will invited individuals mix and collaborate with each other, what issue will be of interest to the larger community, and what kind of contribution will the symposium and subsequent publications make to the issue chosen? In conjunction with the Utah Law Review Board and faculty collegues, we decided that addressing the legal and ethical aspects of technological warfare met the criteria we …
