As developments in contemporary warfare have led to new forms of military power, the historical connections between American society and its military have become attenuated. The possibility that small, limited conflicts can be fought by technical, professional military forces without requiring substantial demands of the public reassures political leaders that the costs of war will be small and dimly felt. As a result, few leaders go out of their way to communicate the merits of increasingly complex foreign policy. Video games are increasingly an important part in today's culture which influences social and individual behavior. Today's modern video games are incredibly realistic, which can cause their players to feel immersed in the world of the game and become attached to in-game avatars. In this study, undergraduate college students were recruited and they played The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, an adventure game. Two conditions were used; the first was that the subjects were unable to customize what their in-game avatar looked like and the second was that they were able to customize their avatars. The Ainu have a unique place in the Modern Japanese State as the only non-Wajin, internal, indigenous ethnic group. At the same time, they share a common history with most indigenous groups, one of colonial domination. The start of this colonial endeavor by the Japanese state began, at the latest, in the sixteenth century C.E., and continues today. As a result of the colonial process, most Ainu have lower social, economic, and educational opportunities that the average Japanese citizen. To explore these points, this thesis analyzes the history of Japanese colonial policy through an Ainu context, and then explores the …

Place And Space In J.R.R. Tolkien's And Peter Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings, Chelsea Corarito

My thesis argues that J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings develops "space" and "place" through character while Peter Jackson's adaptations of the novels craft character through landscapes. I use Michel de Certeau's philosophies on "space" and "place" to discuss the transitory nature of liminal landscapes by comparing the different notions of place created by the Fellowship with those by the supernatural entities. The quest structure and the relationship between character and landscape can be seen in both medieval literature and Tolkien's work. This demonstrates how Tolkien is progressing and advancing the genre of fantasy literature through medieval literary practices. …

Ceramic figurines are one of the most common classes of artifact in the Maya world, although in-depth studies of this type of artifact did not begin until then late 20th century. Figurines offer representations of numerous facets of Maya life and embody glimpses into Maya worldviews. This thesis presents a comparative stylistic analysis of a sample of six Terminal Classic ceramic figurines from Cahal Pech, in modern-day San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize. This project examined the use of Ronald Reagan’s rhetoric, specifically the “Star Wars,” “Zero Option” and “Evil Empire” speeches. It answers the question: Why do we know SDI as Star Wars? It also The rationale for the study came from myriad sources, including the historical and political undertones of the Star Wars films and rhetorical criticism of other Reagan speeches. G. Thomas Goodnight’s analysis linked all three speeches together as a reformulation of wartime rhetoric, so that was the rationale for analyzing three speeches. The development of culturally congruent visual resources on self-care in type 2 diabetes is a culturally appropriate method to provide education to the Native American patients. In particular, the creation of a series of illustrations on foot care is needed. Guided by Leininger's Culture Care Theory and the Sunrise Enabler, materials on foot care are developed through the convergence of emic (generic) and etic (professional) knowledge. Orem's Theory of Self-Care and the Native American perspectives are used to integrate concepts pertaining to self-care. Horses were domesticated from the Eurasian steppes 5,000–6,000 years ago. Since then, the use of horses for transportation, warfare, and agriculture, as well as selection for desired traits and fitness, has resulted in diverse populations distributed across the world, many of which have become or are in the process of becoming formally organized into closed, breeding populations (breeds). This report describes the use of a genome-wide set of autosomal SNPs and 814 horses from 36 breeds to provide the first detailed description of equine breed diversity. FST calculations, parsimony, and distance analysis demonstrated relationships among the breeds that largely …

Intense selective pressures applied over short evolutionary time have resulted in homogeneity within, but substantial variation among, horse breeds. Utilizing this population structure, 744 individuals from 33 breeds, and a 54,000 SNP genotyping array, breed-specific targets of selection were identified using an FST-based statistic calculated in 500-kb windows across the genome. A 5.5-Mb region of ECA18, in which the myostatin (MSTN) gene was centered, contained the highest signature of selection in both the Paint and Quarter Horse. How will intellectual property law change as the economy becomes dominated by services and ideas? This Essay explains why the interest groups and other forces that brought about an expansion of property rights over the last century or two are reconfigured in an economy dominated by ideas. This reconfiguration makes prizes - including grants, subsidies, and various contractual promises - more likely and more attractive than property rights as the means of encouraging innovation. The theory predicts an increase in the use of subsidies and other prizes, rather than patents. These prizes can be of the ex ante kind, offered …

Leaving No Veteran Behind: Policies And Perspectives On Combat Trauma, Veterans Courts, And The Rehabilitative Approach To Criminal Behavior, Mark A. Mccormick-Goodhart
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
As of June 2012, at least 104 jurisdictions spanning 28 states have created specialized criminal courts for veterans. Known as Veterans Treatment Courts (VTCs), these courts focus on rehabilitation, rather than incarceration, to address the root causes of criminal behavior. Although other articles have described the emergence of VTCs, few, if any, have focused on the jurisdictional differences between them. This Comment addresses the basic treatment process and jurisdictional differences among VTCs in the United States, with a particular focus on VTCs in Pennsylvania. This Comment also discusses trends in the VTC movement, the effectiveness of VTCs to date, perspectives …

The research design of this thesis is a foundation for understanding the community evolution of Braden Castle Park Historic District and the significance of the Braden Castle ruins to the current residents in Bradenton Florida. It also contributes insight on challenges confronted in historic preservation and historical archaeology as well as further research regarding public memory, landscape transitions and the role these memories play in contemporary society. This Article analyzes the changes in orthodox Christian attitudes towards defensive violence. While the Article begins in the 19th century and ends in the 21st, most of the Article is about the 20th century. The Article focuses on American Catholicism and on the Vatican, although there is some discussion of American Protestantism. In the nineteenth and early in the twentieth centuries, the traditional Christian concepts of Just War and of the individual's duty to use force to defend himself and his family remained uncontroversial, as they had been for centuries. Using both the International Security Assistance Force’s tactical directive on use of force in Afghanistan and doctrinal concepts from the US military’s counterinsurgency manual, this chapter explores the allocation of risk between the military force and Afghan civilian population. The chapter first reviews civilian and military casualty figures and then uses those numbers as a touchstone against which to consider each group’s perception of the risk they face.

Membrane fusion of apposed bilayers is one of the most fundamental and frequently occurring biological phenomena in living organisms. Following his completion of Tender is the Night in 1934, F. Scott Fitzgerald sent a copy of the manuscript to his friend, Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway replied with a long, thoughtful letter detailing the reasons he both “liked it and didn’t like it” (SL 407). He instructed Fitzgerald: “Forget your personal tragedy. We are all bitched from the start and you especially have to be hurt like hell before you can write seriously. But when you get the damned hurt use it—don’t cheat with it” (408).
