Teaching Self: The Ambiguity Of Lived Experience In Classroom Discourse, Scott V. Gealy
Teaching Self: The Ambiguity Of Lived Experience In Classroom Discourse, Scott V. Gealy
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Inspired by Paul Heilker’s notion of the essay as a form of exploration over argument, embodying an anti-scholastic and chrono-logical approach, and Candace Spigelman’s endorsement of experience as evidence in academic discourse, this thesis weaves memoir into more traditional scholarship in an effort to complicate the archetype of the effective teacher. Furthermore, the essay seeks to deconstruct conventional student, teacher, and cultural binaries with the help of the theoretical work of Deborah Britzman, Parker Palmer, Mikhail Bakhtin, Joy Ritchie and David Wilson and others, while using Scott Russell Sanders’ narrative essay “Under the Influence” as a mentor text for …

The Social Construction Of Childhood Bullying Through U.S. News Media, Rachel Wayne
The Social Construction Of Childhood Bullying Through U.S. News Media, Rachel Wayne
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
For the past ten years, childhood bullying has been heavily discussed in public discourse, through increased news reporting, discussion in awareness campaigns, and court proceedings. The characterization of bullying in the media is symptomatic of this discourse; moreover, it reflects the social construction of bullying. In particular, news media’s emotional and scientific portrayal of bullying has inspired criminalization of the act and defined bullying as a normative trend of deviant behavior—a marked difference from its previous portrayal as an isolated but treatable act. In this paper, I report the findings from a content analysis of articles from mainstream U.S. news …

Transgender Representation In The Media, Jessica N. Jobe
Transgender Representation In The Media, Jessica N. Jobe
Honors Theses
The media is pervasive in American society – more people have television sets than college degrees. For this reason, media is crucial in the spread of information. The way groups of people are represented in the media can be both reflective of and influential on society's (possibly stereotypical) perceptions of these groups. The transgender community often gets misrepresented in the media. As a whole, the transgender community faces a lot of prejudice in American society, and current transgender representation in the media has the power to reinforce negative stereotypes. Twelve examples of news, television, and movies from as early as …
Speech In America: Tracking The Evolution Of Speech Pedagogy In Theatre Training, Zachary Campion
Speech In America: Tracking The Evolution Of Speech Pedagogy In Theatre Training, Zachary Campion
Theses and Dissertations
Speech work, as it relates to actor training, has undergone many important changes since its formal introduction to the field over a century ago by Edith Skinner. Unfortunately, there are many who hold on to antiquated, misinformed and often harmful approaches to this kind of training. This thesis questioned the traditional models of speech pedagogy by creating a narrative for its development, questioning its efficacy, and exploring the alternatives that have developed over the years. I looked at the texts and approaches of Edith Skinner, Patricia Fletcher, Louis Coliaini, and Dudley Knight/Phil Thompson. I acknowledge that each practitioner has made …

The Development And Gentrification Of Musical Commerce In Williamsburg, Virginia, 1716-1775, Joshua R. Lehuray
The Development And Gentrification Of Musical Commerce In Williamsburg, Virginia, 1716-1775, Joshua R. Lehuray
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the burgeoning musical commerce industry in Williamsburg, Virginia between approximately 1716 to 1775. It especially focuses on the gentrification of this industry and the ways in which elite Virginians made use of music to establish themselves as inheritors of British culture and musical entertainment. A diversity of musical businesses appeared in Williamsburg during the eighteenth century, including instrument sellers, music and dancing teachers, and two theaters utilized by theatrical troupes, to name a few. Drawing on evidence from the Virginia Gazette, as well as journals, letters, playhouse reports, and account books, the thesis concludes that music provided …
