Direct Capture Of Plasmids Conferring Resistance To Beta-Lactam Antibiotics From Agriculturally-Impacted Stream Sediment, Elena Emilova Balkanska
Direct Capture Of Plasmids Conferring Resistance To Beta-Lactam Antibiotics From Agriculturally-Impacted Stream Sediment, Elena Emilova Balkanska
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Streams harbor large numbers of native and introduced bacteria, which can be both recipients and donors of antibiotic resistance genes on mobile elements. Transmissible, plasmid- borne resistance to expanded-spectrum cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones is of increasing concern in clinical settings, but is rare in natural environments, such as streams and soils. Using a method developed in our laboratory, a rifampicin-resistant strain of Escherichia coli was used to capture, without culturing, two plasmids allowing growth on trypticase soy agar supplemented with the beta lactam antibiotics ampicillin and ceftazadime. Plasmids were captured directly from stream sediment taken from Muddy Creek, a stream heavily …
The Processing Of Evolutionarily Relevant Stimuli, Angela Marcelle Perta
The Processing Of Evolutionarily Relevant Stimuli, Angela Marcelle Perta
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Previous research suggests that the human face captures attention more quickly than objects. Based on neurophysiological and behavioral studies, we would expect that the human body would also capture attention efficiently. We used a passive viewing adaptation to the visual search paradigm to examine how quickly whole human body, isolated human face, and isolated human body stimuli capture attention across three array sizes (9, 16, 25 stimuli). Our results suggest that the isolated human face captures attention most efficiently in the two smaller arrays, but no more efficiently than the whole human body and isolated human body in the largest …

Record-Breaking Statistics For Random Walks In The Presence Of Measurement Error And Noise, Yaniv Edrey, Alexander Kostinski, Satya N. Majumdar, Brian Berkowitz
Record-Breaking Statistics For Random Walks In The Presence Of Measurement Error And Noise, Yaniv Edrey, Alexander Kostinski, Satya N. Majumdar, Brian Berkowitz
Department of Physics Publications
We examine distance record setting by a random walker in the presence of a measurement error δ and additive noise γ and show that the mean number of (upper) records up to n steps still grows universally as ⟨Rn⟩∼n1/2 for large n for all jump densities, including Lévy distributions, and for all δ and γ. In contrast, the pace of record setting, measured by the amplitude of the n1/2 growth, depends on δ and γ. In the absence of noise (γ=0), the amplitude S(δ) is evaluated explicitly for arbitrary jump distributions and it decreases monotonically with …

Formulaic Women?: The Disparity Between The 12th Century Reality Of Noblewomen In England And The 12th Century Chronicles' Depiction Of English Noblewomen, Kimberly Wharton
Formulaic Women?: The Disparity Between The 12th Century Reality Of Noblewomen In England And The 12th Century Chronicles' Depiction Of English Noblewomen, Kimberly Wharton
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
This thesis seeks to examine the degree to which 12th century chronicles do or do not accurately represent the position of 12th century noblewomen in England. Since the chroniclers partly based their women on what had been written before, the extent to which the 12th century chronicles follow the two borrowed motifs of women as intellectuals and warriors from their sources will also be discussed. The works of Geoffrey of Monmouth, William of Malmesbury, Orderic Vitalis, and William of Newburgh represent the 12th century chronicles. This thesis will also look at the chroniclers’ Latin sources, specifically Bede, Virgil, and Ovid. …
From Gibbons To Gymnasts: A Look At The Biomechanics And Neurophysiology Of Brachiation In Gibbons And Its Human Rediscovery, Emma Et Pennock
From Gibbons To Gymnasts: A Look At The Biomechanics And Neurophysiology Of Brachiation In Gibbons And Its Human Rediscovery, Emma Et Pennock
Student Works
This conference paper serves to examine the evolutionary linkages of a brachiating ancestor in humans, the biomechanical and neurophysiology of modern day brachiators, and the human rediscovery of this form of locomotion. Brachiation is arguably one of the most metabolically effective modes of travel by any organism and can be observed most meritoriously in Gibbons. The purpose of the research conducted for this paper was to encourage further exploration of the neurophysiological similarities and differences between humans and non-human primates. The hope is that in spurring more interest and research in this area, further possibilities for rehabilitating brain injury will …
The Acute Effects Of Gentamycin Ototoxicity On Bobwhite Quail Basilar Papilla And Auditory Brainstem Responses, Kristie Wilson
The Acute Effects Of Gentamycin Ototoxicity On Bobwhite Quail Basilar Papilla And Auditory Brainstem Responses, Kristie Wilson
Dissertations, 2014-2019
The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a single dose of gentamycin in elevating Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) thresholds and causing inner ear hair cell loss or damage. A total of twenty-two Bobwhite quail were used (n=7 control, n=15 experimental); experimental group quail were injected with a 200 mg/kg dose of gentamycin within 24 hours of hatch (P0). Three to four days post-hatch or injection the quail underwent ABR testing. Thresholds were measured using a 1,000 Hz, 2,000 Hz, and 4,000 Hz tone pip and a click beginning at 90 dB nominalSPL. Resulting waveforms were analyzed using MATLAB …
Ultrasonic Vocalizations In Eph/Ephrin Mutant Mice, Bryna Rickenbach-Cline
Ultrasonic Vocalizations In Eph/Ephrin Mutant Mice, Bryna Rickenbach-Cline
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Purpose: Murine mammals, more commonly known as mice, emit ultrasonic vocalizations or “yelps” to communicate. It has been found that adult mice use these vocalizations to communicate with each other, and infant mice utilize ultrasonic vocalizations to communicate with their mother. It is known that a relationship exists between hearing ability and vocalization (Bass-Ringdahl, 2010). This study aims to record yelps/ vocalizations of four strains of mouse pups to determine how the development of hearing relates to the vocalizations that are emitted. It is thought that mice with compromised genes that encode for signaling proteins that are essential to the …
Quantifying Head Acceleration During Vestibular Rehabilitation, Anne Hogan
Quantifying Head Acceleration During Vestibular Rehabilitation, Anne Hogan
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Dizziness can often be a serious and confounding condition that ranges in severity from annoying to debilitating and affects many people. The most common and effective treatment for persistent dizziness is vestibular rehabilitation therapy, which falls into three categories: adaptation, sensory substitution, and habituation. While more is known about adaptation and sensory substitution, questions remain regarding the exact mechanisms of recovery for habituation. Precisely, the optimal stimulation to the vestibular system, as measured in intensity of head accelerations, is unknown for habituation treatment. In this dissertation are drafts of two manuscripts. The first explores the average intensity of linear and …

The Inclusive Art Classroom: Time And Strategies, Margaret Harrison Vaughan Miller
The Inclusive Art Classroom: Time And Strategies, Margaret Harrison Vaughan Miller
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Art teachers are required to teach inclusive art classes that provide instruction for general education students and their mentally disabled peers. This study reveals the amount of time an art teacher needs to prepare for and teach the exceptional education students in an inclusive art classroom during school, at school after hours, and at home. Successful teaching strategies are identified. The following recommendations should be taken into consideration: educational institutions should require that preservice teachers take classes on exceptional education, and school districts should provide inservice workshops on teaching inclusive classes to general education teachers, including art teachers.
Microbial Dynamics And Core Microbiome Of Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon Cinereus), Andrew Howard Loudon
Microbial Dynamics And Core Microbiome Of Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon Cinereus), Andrew Howard Loudon
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Beneficial cutaneous bacteria on amphibians can protect against the lethal fungal disease chytridiomycosis, which has decimated many amphibian species. The stability of these bacterial communities likely influences health outcomes, and is investigated here for the first time. We describe the diversity of bacteria on red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) in the wild, and the stability of these communities over time in captivity using culture-independent Illumina sequencing. In the field, there was no correlation between the diversity of salamanders’ microbial communities and the diversity of their substrates’ microbial communities. Salamanders were brought into the laboratory to test for the effect of an …

Developing A Learning Environment For The Edwards Aquifer With A Base In Systems Thinking And Dynamics, James Everette Simon Iii
Developing A Learning Environment For The Edwards Aquifer With A Base In Systems Thinking And Dynamics, James Everette Simon Iii
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The purpose of this project was to create a learning environment that fostered an interest in conservation and preservation of the Edwards Aquifer in children by using the endangered and threatened species that live in the aquifer and depend on it to survive. This game was based on the system dynamics of the Edwards Aquifer that were put into a causal loop diagram. In order to gather the data I needed for this project, I spent a great deal of time in San Marcos, Texas, at Texas State University’s Albert B. Alkek Library. The library contained hardcopies of information that …
System Dynamics Modeling Study Of The Possibility Of Endemic Measles In The State Of Virginia, Ivan W. Gowe
System Dynamics Modeling Study Of The Possibility Of Endemic Measles In The State Of Virginia, Ivan W. Gowe
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
After an effective vaccine was widely available, measles incidence fell by 98%. Immunization programs and surveillance systems in the United States (US) are so successful there has been no endemic spread since 2000. The threat from measles lies in its high infectivity, an asymptomatic infectious state that lasts an average of four days and the decreasing popularity of vaccination. The lack of first-hand experience with the infection (due to immunization) has caused some to wonder if the vaccine is necessary. Herd immunity threshold is a measure of the fraction of immune individuals present in a population to keep disease reproduction …

Citizens Of The Empire: A Molding Of Victorian Childhood Identity, Christopher B. Gallagher
Citizens Of The Empire: A Molding Of Victorian Childhood Identity, Christopher B. Gallagher
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The Victorian Era in Great Britain was a time period of dramatic change. The Industrial Revolution was altering the social and economic fabric of society. Socially, Victorians were confronted with new theories that challenged their religious beliefs. The British Isles were progressing steadily in creating a national identity. Finally, the existence of the British Empire made imperialism a factor that cannot be ignored. Yet, many historians have pointed out that the history of the British metropole itself is often disconnected from the political and cultural history of the Empire. It is within this conversation that this project seeks to find …
Turtle Usage Of Urban Ditches In An Expanding Northeast Arkansas City, Jonathan Elston
Turtle Usage Of Urban Ditches In An Expanding Northeast Arkansas City, Jonathan Elston
Student Theses and Dissertations
Human expansion has contributed to the reduction of wildlife biodiversity across the globe. Turtles are one of many taxonomic groups that have experienced increased decline in the last few decades from anthropogenic expansion. Turtles have been able to persist in habitats heavily modified by humans; yet, little is known about the ecology of these urban populations. The present investigation focused on urban ditch characteristics associated with high turtle abundance and richness. From May to August of 2011 and 2012, 452 turtles of six different species were captured in seven ditch systems in Jonesboro, Craighead County, AR. Possible influences of ditch …
Northern Largemouth Bass, Micropterus Salmoides Salmoides, And Florida Largemouth Bass, Micropterus S. Floridanus, Population Structure And Stocking Protocol Assessment In Seven Arkansas Reservoirs Using Microsatellite Analysis, Karl Andrew Lamothe
Student Theses and Dissertations
Several Arkansas reservoirs have been stocked with Florida largemouth bass (FLMB; Micropterus salmoides floridanus) for decades given that FLMB have been reported to have superior growth characteristics when compared to the native northern largemouth bass (NLMB; Micropterus salmoides salmoides), and therefore improve recreational and sport angling. In this study, 1,350 largemouth bass fin clips were sampled for DNA analysis from seven Arkansas reservoir bass populations to determine levels of FLMB introgression among populations, along with investigating relative weight calculations between phenotypes. Overall, Arkansas reservoirs varied widely in FLMB incorporation. Reservoirs subjected to renovation with rotenone treatment and subsequent stockings of …
