Hypersaline Lake Environments Exhibit Reduced Microbial Dormancy, Joshua Christopher Vert Jun 2013

Hypersaline Lake Environments Exhibit Reduced Microbial Dormancy, Joshua Christopher Vert

Theses and Dissertations

From acid seeps and deep-sea thermal vents to glacial ice and hypersaline lakes, extreme environments contain relatively simplified communities consisting of extremophiles that have evolved to survive and thrive under adverse abiotic conditions. In more neutral environments, microorganisms use dormancy as a common life history strategy to weather temporal fluctuations of resources or stresses until more 'optimal' conditions are present. It is unclear if dormancy is an essential survival mechanism for microorganisms in extreme environments; however, recent studies suggest that extreme environments may create stable conditions for extremophiles to the extent that dormancy is of less ecological importance. Using lake …

Air-Quality And Climatic Consequences Of Bioenergy Crop Cultivation, William Christian Porter Jun 2013

Air-Quality And Climatic Consequences Of Bioenergy Crop Cultivation, William Christian Porter

Dissertations and Theses

Bioenergy is expected to play an increasingly significant role in the global energy budget. In addition to the use of liquid energy forms such as ethanol and biodiesel, electricity generation using processed energy crops as a partial or full coal alternative is expected to increase, requiring large-scale conversions of land for the cultivation of bioenergy feedstocks such as cane, grasses, or short rotation coppice. With land-use change identified as a major contributor to changes in the emission of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), many of which are known contributors to the pollutants ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter …

Revegetation Guidelines For Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (Swppp) Closure In Central New Mexico, Jennifer Payne-Ross Jun 2013

Revegetation Guidelines For Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (Swppp) Closure In Central New Mexico, Jennifer Payne-Ross

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

A major challenge for construction stormwater permit holders in New Mexico is the closure of their Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) through successful revegetation of the post-construction sites. Successful revegetation of native plants is a difficult task to achieve. Without proper guidance, the SWPPP permit closure goal is exceptionally difficult to achieve in New Mexico. This paper examines comprehensive seeding guidance designed for contractors or other individuals without seeding experience that are responsible for permanent soil stabilization. When accurately followed and appropriately budgeted, the seeding guidance document developed in conjunction with this paper and presented in Appendix I should greatly …

The Microbial Link In Ecosystem Processing In The East Fork Of The Jemez River : Extracellular Enzyme Response To Habitat, Seasonal Fluctuations, And Wildfire Disturbance, Susan G. Kutvirt Jun 2013

The Microbial Link In Ecosystem Processing In The East Fork Of The Jemez River : Extracellular Enzyme Response To Habitat, Seasonal Fluctuations, And Wildfire Disturbance, Susan G. Kutvirt

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Mounting evidence suggests that a warming climate in the southwestern United States threatens the quality and quantity of mountain source waters for New Mexicos largest surface water source, the Rio Grande. These waters, fed primarily by snowmelt, are critical to the ecological, agricultural, municipal, and cultural requirements of New Mexico. In an effort to construct a baseline of stream metabolism in the East Fork of the Jemez River (EFJR), a major tributary of the Rio Grande, our research team sampled macrophytes, algae, macroinvertebrates, and benthic microbial communities to assess changes pertaining to habitat and seasonal fluctuations and in response to …

Multi-Year Measurement Of Wholestream Metabolism In A Snowmelt-Dominated Montane Ecosystem, Betsy Shafer Jun 2013

Multi-Year Measurement Of Wholestream Metabolism In A Snowmelt-Dominated Montane Ecosystem, Betsy Shafer

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Warming temperatures, reduced precipitation, and earlier snowmelt are predicted for the mountains of the southwestern U.S due to climate change. In addition, interannual variability in precipitation, partially linked to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon (ENSO), also will impact stream-flow and ecosystem processes. Wholestream metabolism was modeled using continuous data for selected time periods ranging from 2005 to 2012. This eight-year study explores temporal trends in whole-stream metabolism parameters; as well, it links the potential impact of climate variability on these temporal trends. Gross primary production (GPP) and community respiration (CR) rates were comparable to other open-canopy lotic systems, and remained …

A Longitudinal Examination Of Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Drug Use And Unsafe Sex Among Young African American Females, Dexter R. Voisin Jun 2013

A Longitudinal Examination Of Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Drug Use And Unsafe Sex Among Young African American Females, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

This study prospectively examined associations among multiple theoretically informed risk (e.g., depression, sexual sensation seeking, and risky peers norms) and protective factors (e.g., social support, STI knowledge, and refusal to have sex self efficacy) on unsafe sex among 715 African American adolescent females aged 15-21 who participated in an STI/HIV prevention intervention. Generalized estimating equation models were used to assess associations between baseline characteristics and sexual risk over a 12-month follow-up period. Overall risk in this population was high: at baseline, nearly a third of women reported sex under the influence of alcohol or substances; ≥ 2 partners for vaginal …

Thymidine Kinase 1: Diagnostic And Prognostic Significance In Malignancy, Melissa Marie Alegre Jun 2013

Thymidine Kinase 1: Diagnostic And Prognostic Significance In Malignancy, Melissa Marie Alegre

Theses and Dissertations

Thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) is a cancer biomarker which has diagnostic and prognostic potential in a variety of malignancies. TK1 is significantly elevated in the serum and tumor tissue of most malignancies. This increase in TK1 can be detected in the very early stages of malignancy, including in pre-malignant disease with an increased risk for progression. Several studies have demonstrated that elevated TK1 is found in serum months before any clinical symptoms of malignancy. It has also been demonstrated that TK1 is elevated months before clinical recurrence of malignancy. This work first sought to demonstrate the early nature of TK1 …

Expenditure, Confidence, And Uncertainty: Identifying Shocks To Consumer Confidence Using Daily Data, Marta Lachowska Jun 2013

Expenditure, Confidence, And Uncertainty: Identifying Shocks To Consumer Confidence Using Daily Data, Marta Lachowska

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

The importance of consumer confidence in stimulating economic activity is a disputed issue in macroeconomics. Do changes in confidence represent autonomous fluctuations in optimism, independent of information on economic fundamentals, or are they a reflection of economic news? I study this question by using high-frequency microdata on spending and consumer confidence, and I find that consumer confidence contains information relevant to predicting spending, independent from other indicators. The exogenous movements in consumer confidence lead to very short fluctuations in consumer spending, consistent with the hypothesis that more consumer confidence reflects less uncertainty about the future.

Resource Legacies And Priming Regulate Microbial Communities In Antarctica's Dry Valleys, Sabrina Deni Saurey Jun 2013

Resource Legacies And Priming Regulate Microbial Communities In Antarctica's Dry Valleys, Sabrina Deni Saurey

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple mechanisms control bacterial community structure but two in particular, the "legacy" of past environmental conditions, and the "priming" of bacteria to respond to seasonal or reoccurring fluctuations in resources, have the potential to determine both bacterial communities, as well as, temporal shifts in active bacterial taxa. To begin to evaluate the legacy effects of resources on microbial communities, we added four limiting resources annually (i.e., water only; C-mannitol + water; N-NH4NO3 + water; and C, N + water) and measured shifts in bacterial community composition after seven years in a cold desert ecosystem in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. …

Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus or GAS) is a Gram-positive bacterial pathogen that has shown complex modes of regulation of its virulence factors to cause diverse diseases. Bacterial small RNAs are regarded as novel widespread regulators of gene expression in response to environmental signals. Recent studies have revealed that several small RNAs (sRNAs) have an important role in S. pyogenes physiology and pathogenesis by regulating gene expression at the translational level. To search for new sRNAs in S. pyogenes, we performed a genomewide analysis through computational prediction followed by experimental verification. To overcome the limitation of low accuracy in …

Breast Cancer Antiestrogen Resistance 3 (Bcar3) Promotes Cell Motility By Regulating Actin Cytoskeletal And Adhesion Remodeling In Invasive Breast Cancer Cells., Ashley L Wilson, Randy S Schrecengost, Michael S Guerrero, Keena S Thomas, Amy H Bouton

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Metastatic breast cancer is incurable. In order to improve patient survival, it is critical to develop a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms that regulate metastasis and the underlying process of cell motility. Here, we focus on the role of the adaptor molecule Breast Cancer Antiestrogen Resistance 3 (BCAR3) in cellular processes that contribute to cell motility, including protrusion, adhesion remodeling, and contractility. Previous work from our group showed that elevated BCAR3 protein levels enhance cell migration, while depletion of BCAR3 reduces the migratory and invasive capacities of breast cancer cells. In the current study, we show that BCAR3 is …
